Philip "The Honeybadger" Mulpeter joins the Energized Show from SBG Portarlington during early COVID lockdown training. He describes discovering MMA on TV, two trial sessions at Kokoro in Dublin, then joining SBG where he trained alongside Conor McGregor, Chris Fields, and others, progressing quickly despite struggling with jiu-jitsu for years. After roughly three months at SBG and three months in Thailand, he had one amateur bout under C Class rules in Waterford before turning pro. Mulpeter recounts his long pursuit of Bellator, receiving a call from John Calvin to fight at the 3Arena, and the heartbreak when opponent Crawford pulled out despite being neurologist-cleared—leaving Mulpeter healthy at weigh-ins but without a bout. He wants a reliable opponent next, calling out Terry Brazier respectfully for an October Bellator card, and explains why he prefers international matchups over fighting close SBG or Team Rhino allies. He discusses early-career depression, fight-camp pressure, coping tools, and plans to revive Honey Badgers Academy mental-health content and online courses. Throughout, he emphasizes his finisher mentality—most wins by stoppage—and satisfaction fighting for a top European promotion rather than obsessing over the UFC.

okay what's going on guys welcome to a brand new episode of energized today we have a very special guest on the show live from SPG port Arlington the loveliest man from Bleach the honey badger Philip Moore Peter Lorre facilities have their ad we just got a private tour yeah thanks bye yeah it's a work in progress three years we're here now yes yeah we're making progress we've gotten the full food you Matt's big MMA evolved cage yeah it's gone we were really well till these players came in and interrupted us it's a lot of money boys am I to be honest now I set it up as best they could when they first opened and I've been adding in little bits as I go along I'm always putting back in and trying to improve all the time so I because it cost a few quid but it's whatever you've any of it it's doing a great job it looks stay there yeah thanks for coming on the show like obviously you're in training so have you been training which over over the last few weeks yeah yeah I'm flats I get in every day get a good a good session then every day obviously you can't do as much as you would like without a partner but I don't keep him fit keeping the cardio up and work on my strength I'm working on things that I don't normally have as much time for like mobility we will always put it on the back burner it's very important but it always gets left behind so I'm working on things like that at the minute and proved my flexibility mobility and yeah just keep the cardio going and looking forward to getting back to reality and fully in huh love CM Bellator dope man Crawford Paul area which was heartbreaking boy bring us back to the start a blob game for anybody III seen an MMA on Bravo I think you beyond years ago honestly I don't anything I was ever good at growing up who's never good at soccer football I always go to fight in the Zen standoff for myself you know I saw dan dan I seen Emma Mayen Bravo I was like I was late I was like I think it was nineteen five you know I was I was kind of for getting into training a little bit and lifting weights and stuff a friend of mine put me on a program and then I seen MMA and I was like think I'd be good at that I [Music] ended up a friend of my dad's a friend that a family brought me up to Kokoro and Dublin I did a session in Kokoro I did two sessions in Kokoro and then I ended up having to go to work in May over in the West so MMA was put aside for a few months and when I come back the guy had brought me to my first class was started SPG and yeah got in and got gone and the guys were already kind of building momentum like McGregor and Hendra and fields and the lads Houlihan all the guys and with the warrant that far ahead that I could kind of keep going I was a little I was almost a little bit behind but I was able to gain momentum and I progress very quick in that environment of such good quality training partners yeah and I was only training three months I I went to Thailand for another three months and then yeah had my first fight when I come back no straight yeah straight in and at the time it was like C Class rules it was basically it was pro gloves and all but it was nor headshots on the ground so once she got to take now and it was throwing headshots and obviously I was only training six months or the LGG to us in the greatest so I this guy down on Waterford and miles price actually was running the show back then I was a long time ago now but we I ended up I I was beating they're going to fee and he was kind of like just hanging on to a single leg and I couldn't hit him and after the fight I went backstage was like the John I'm sorry pop me in prom I thought oh yeah [ __ ] anymore I would have finished him if I had in a pro fight so I went pro laughter one amateur fight that was threat was going back then and I learned okay yeah sure no we're here and I was like a pay-for yeah I'll get paid and my life is Emma man I wouldn't change it for the world that's I'm Phillip you said you're tailing Kokoro as I was up there North's round yeah that's right yeah yeah I only doing two sessions there but that was my first my first day yeah yeah yeah so like you obviously didn't like you can unseen for a long while like for people that didn't actually know and then like what was it like when you when you went into SPG first and Sarah trained with all the lads unlike also seeing how far like all the careers have gone yeah yeah back then so I didn't really know any different like we didn't know it was just a bunch of guys in we were all training hard and there was a good pose in there from the very first session I I was I felt at home you know I'm I jumped in like John into John's classes and back then there was no beginner class or anything like that everybody trained together so basically you were thrown into a shark tank like jiu-jitsu was my nightmare for the first like three years of MMA because I just got like killed by everybody and I'm you had the likes of Tom King there near I - me too - you know I'm I was able to hang with everybody in the strike and under a sling I was naturally I had good takedown defense and I was able to like bite down and dig in you know yeah but when I come to jiu-jitsu is a whole different ball game there's no fake and you did - it's time in the mind that's it so that was my archenemy when I first started and also did you like obviously you went in and the lads are just a bit on the way the Jews did were you like right there's something special up in here or like I just or did you not really when I first started I didn't really think of it like that I was just kind of like what I you might when I first started was like comparing how long the other guy he was training so like I had never really trained I never did much sport I played football and a little bit of Ruby put like when I come down anything else I was fancy in a lot of Turkey food and just living about lifestyle booze and a lot and you know yourself um but then once I started MMA after the first week there's no mess and I was going home every night saying I'm telling me I'm going to be in the UFC I'm going pro and that's it and I've always had that mindset from like three days into training MMA everybody be laughing at me like saying will you go there like but I you know I stuck to it and as time went on them then we started realized we were a force you know that got that original SVG team was a force you know and there was a lot of guys there with a lot of motivation and we all worked hard together and we sweat it together and you know we built a pathway I think for this generation that's that's popular now and yeah it's amazing stories obviously you you're on like both waves like obviously you you're with the original Creole tour as well it's just yeah yeah it is it is I'm looking back now I'm sure it's it's an amazing to be part of it and be a part of our old wave as well and still I'm still gone and like I I still take that like I still haven't really got my commando party in the Bellator yet my last fight you know I it's first time fighting entry arena and it was the first time fighting in Bellator and I was like I was kind of you know it was a little bit of extra nerves there that you want to get your first win and you don't want to do any stupid so like ah and it was unwell to wait as well and I I kind of know for the last few years I've been fighting at welterweight just because I wasn't being strict and off on my diet yeah where is like light where is my weaith class you know that's my build is for a lightweight no but you're quite worried at the back as well like you mean you're not yeah yeah but I mean I'm like obviously before that before the last comp I was worrying as well that I wasn't gonna make wind I was going to be hard but it ended up Lance mean like so easy I'm not messing obviously the diet was strict and all but like when it came down to that week I was saw energize I had a lot of anything you know what I mean I was ready to go on like then and then for the fight to fall true on fight there was nightmare like I still it's like the biggest letdown ever like you know we'll make it we're making sure to get there for your fight as well and we're like like really your lads fiery the Foley was gonna be acts like I know I was gonna be a proposal for them up your bow because we like follow me so they're like everyone else follows it's like like a lowly promotin I'm a little like watch them like all the bill of everything and then like not happen cuz I saw you at the weigh-ins yeah shape like I was yeah my gas hang comes true roof I like I felt so I'd no injuries like first time I ever got to a fight in ages without an injury you know normally you're carrying little nuts no matter what anybody says here you're always carrying some sort of a little knock into the fight you know I'm but even even the watch the last week before that I had like an MCL tear air you know I see when pray to and you just kind of get on it and you have to just read rearrange or train and to fit in and just get get done you know but this this kind of hack she was fresh you know the way it works out it's a disaster but like Crawford would Amanda gray its crop is well I really think that would have been a my coming out for you know it would have been a back and forth for you and I think I would about to win you know I got submission or a stoppage but I'm look sure I'm a just went now and don't forget I get a good fight for October if it goes head blown up in October no geez I wasn't signing up to a fight with Crawford again am I are you like in fair like if it's your health you know after something wrong obviously you have to pull out or you can understand why he pulled out I can he was actually cleared to fight really it was his on he pulled out himself you know that the neurologist cleared him to fight but I mean that's that's different sorry there was some up but it was whatever but IIIi would like to fight somebody that's gonna show up on the next ballot or card maybe someone like Terry brazier let's think about fight absolute best to call him and I think he would hey Joe makes more sense yeah yeah I'd like to fight Terry Barry I just think that he'd show up and I think that he's good heart you know I wanna be good for you I'd like to fight area in October and I mean yeah he's a big boy me yeah yeah two of us coming down we've we fought it well threat before I think I think I think it'd be a barn burner yeah exactly and that's what I'm looking for I want to show everybody you know what I'm capable of so I want to go to pawn and that's gonna bring out the best to me to be around for them you've been around for a long time when you when you finally got the call over to Bellator like a member you put a big poster being like this is something you've been working for for ages and they are they happy you were can you can can you put it words exactly like hell I can bear and I'm what exactly happened so like I was trying obviously I was again on to Bellator and it was I was getting no success like I was trying to get my manager to get me on and it just seemed like I was just never gotten any response you know and I was in the gym here one night like Monday or some and the office phone was ringing I was late and I never I never really answered the office phone that never answered I knew it it was late I and it was fast going on but I ran in and answered and it was it was John Calvin he was like would you like to fight in Bellator and I was like wow can't believe a man it was so out of blue just came from camo no I really AM yeah I was buzzing around assumed that name it's like when in below but deserve that as well you know I put in a lot of work through the years I'm like I laid a part where I was with the guys to help build this part where you know - and plus I wanted to be like properly paid you know I'm Bellator Doudna and they're the only promotion in Europe they're paying anything so it was nice to finally like get you know onto the top show and even then - to fight in the tree arena I was amazing like the buzz and the atmosphere is like next-level and just even even the fight week how Bellator EJ and you know the way you're put up and it's just very professional and I'm really glad to be involved with such a top promotion some people say like best photos room or in the USA and if you're not new you see it's did they just look at certain ways when you hear people say stuff about like what like what you think cuz yeah it is prizefight yeah like obviously when I was starting out I had this mad thing about USC I used to put a lot of pressure on myself about getting to do you have seen it was always you have CEO of C and nearly backfires on you damn and you're putting that much pressure on yourself and no like no it doesn't really matter to me I'm happy to be on a top promotion where a lot of people get to view my fights I get well compensated um and and that's that's that's why I'm here for you know I'm and I'm like I I really think that I still have like really meaty good few fights left at me you know and I and I'd like to I'd like to get string in on October and I want to fight someone like Terry browser so that all you can I can show my skills you know I'm paw on a proper fight unsure because I reckon once once once once I get a good fight like that under my belt on the ballot our banner I'll explore everybody unknown who the honey badger is then you know on don't forget a fight in America as well you know so yeah a very notable look as well you know yeah yeah I I like for my fighting style to like really approach me up to 97 and like most of my fights of him one my stoppage you know if you look at my record like only wins have nearly can buy stoppages I'm I'm a finisher you know on I've only got two decision wins and so like I I was very unhappy with myself that I didn't get to finish in the last fight it's kind of haunted the stoppage on the feet a little bit too much so I just think I'll be much more relaxed next time and I'll be able to display a lot more of my skills in the next fight until going me to the total three all right you go in to fight a brazier to be him how many more fights and who just for you to get there who the names that you have to get through well like like I think Terry's a big name and decided upon you know I like Bellator are very good like once you show them that your am the fight and your cab watch you're capable of and you're you bring it every time they look after you then you know so I just think that the last leg was the decision was a bit lackluster and I'd like I'd like to like Shh yet to finish you know I when I when I win by decision I don't I feel like I feel like the fights not over you know I wake up the next day and it's like [ __ ] like you give my shirt and meet them in the gym yeah it's not the same at all man I'm just like I just like it I need once you get to finish the arts like you get that bulls and it's like it's what I fight for him that's what about what at this price tag Roger Mars Christ Benson Henderson and then people love it I love it I love it I love it and I'd love like right Terry browser I'd love to fight Terry much to be honest with you right I'm sick of fighting I'm team Rhino guys I'm Way too close with all the guys up there I'm obviously not that awesome miles I have no problem fighting miles but Timur I know I'm so close but Annie Ryan it just gets him little bit awkward with me I'm I know Andi like 10 years now you know I went to America with a team really know when I was only star and you know on my first year fighting I fought on an amateur show out there and I was with all the guys with red zone I fought red zone fr John Donley and now I fought McCabe you know I I I think I put my work in we're Fighting Irish guy he's you know I think there's enough people on the ballot our roster for me not to be Fighting Irish guys you know yeah I think I'm past that and I prefer to be fine I am on an international scale rather than guys are from the island you know what I mean so yeah cuz it looks like it would come you got you've been training in multiple gyms as well like you I mean you see that like core relationships with all the gyms yeah I bounced around to all the SVG James you know you get you get you get your sweetie you get you get so much different variety from each court you know John Kavanagh is a serious coach one of the best in the world Owen Roddy such a hidden gem in Ireland I he doesn't get enough credit for how good he is and then Chris fields I've done a lot of training I'm Chris he's like my [ __ ] one of my best friends you know I I bounced around to all these James and I I'm I'm like a I do a lot of training in SPG port as well so like I think it's a good idea to be bound and I Knight flow into auntie rain gym no hassle as well and I do sessions up there won't bother me and on I'm good with all those guys so 1490 was like the DA or voyage em man you know yeah he's brilliant he's made some crack like an eye on a coach Widow mo for Team Ireland under eye my team as well you know so even after McCain fight it's a close decision and like he wants to scream for zyb but we also have a good relationship we're friends you know so it gets awkward and I'd prefer not to be in that environment I just want to fight guys that I don't know go in have a bit of crack on the stage and like get a bit IRG by og you know just for the fans whereas when it's guys from Team Rhino I have to show a bit of respect because I know the team so well you know what I mean it's a it's I much prefer now to be fighting a guys from a different country to be honest at this age I know we actually prefer when they're always first someone else he'll like yeah deaf person huge here just in general know you're just like I think I think like obviously when you're making your name at the start your career you have to fight those guys that's that's part of your your path you know to get to the top of your country you know but when you're fighting a Bellator there's no need to be fighting guys from Dublin like I trained in Dublin I don't need to be fighting guys Dublin tiny all those sides and the local scene all the time there's no need for it you know it's just animosity is built for and no matter what way you say it yourself there's always a little bit of animosity between you whether if it's a close fight and you win or lose you know I'm like I not problem like I've trained at miles price I was meant to fight Matty before he got injured and pulled out but like I passed I know you know what I mean you know much prefer to get my paws on Terry yeah I got a lot of attitude as well feel poor damn there was something that I didn't want to bring all the way you can like you've been talking about mental health issues as well and mental health and well what made you start speaking out loud about that stuff because like that hits home and a lot of people especially these days even myself so like seeing someone like yourself food like you think as hard as nails also has a very nice personality and it's like willing to talk about it you know well like I went through my own battles with mental health um a lot of my early career was I was fighting to fight you know I was fighting depression and I was also a tram for fight camps and I think that I say is like a fight camp is such a pressure environment it's like a pressure cooker and no matter what way you look at it's always in the back your head that you're gonna be locked into the cage and fighting somebody you know so like if you have other problems in your life or you have other demons that you're battling that just the pressure just gets way too much you know so for me to get out the other side and which would that I mean a good mental space the last few years and I've got out the other side of it and I have had my own skills and I have my own ways of keeping on top of mental health and it's a constant thing it's not just that it's not just that you're fixed it's you're not happy go-lucky no you know you have your bodies and you have your bad weeks but it's a matter of using your own skills to get back on top of things and keep that at bay you know whether it's meditation or your your little morning routines and stuff and I think I've when it comes to that sort of a that sort of mindset or mental health issues I can relate to people to have are going through it because I've been there myself you know and I and I'd like to help people and I feel that you don't care like oh you know you know what I am and I know I can fight and I know I can do all that's all I thought a problem and speak my mind about depression whereas I think some people find it harder to speak like that because they feel like they're all you didn't all people are laughing at the merits and girly or whatever you know just kind of show you Hardman image but our youth not in the prove I know what I am and I I'm professional MMA fighter that has been true a mental health fight you know so if I can help people get out the other side of that I'm happy to do it and I have my honey badgers Academy I started there a while ago and I was doing kind of mental health tips and stuff like that I kind of got left behind because I'm so busy with Bellator and running my gym and stuff but I the minute I've a lot of time on my hands so I'm she put a lot of work into the honey badgers Academy at the minute and I'm working on putting out a few online courses and stuff like that so keep an eye out for that on my social media pages well definition open when you're updating Alti absolute incredible very you know on-trend topics what spell what I just said like you mean there's no shame the sportsmen aren't sure look if a karma like a fillable Peter and then well the hardest men the world poison fury you can suppose their mental health out loud hope anyone else I think it's good for people like with our put in our background and our profession that goes-- concede at it's okay to talk about these things and when it's coming for someone like us that they they think it's this hard man or that has no emotions or doesn't deal with those sorts of things people look at me and think that your mindset was rock steady the whole time but I feel like I have to work my way through it and even you probably know it's hard to get me to do podcasts and stuff like that Oliver you had only only this Ogoni lately since I came back that I've been more open to doing all this and getting him behind the camera or in front of the camera should I say you know that was all part of my confidence things that was hiding all the time back when I was going through my own issues you know where I feel like you can get past those things you can work on it and you have your own tools you have your own little bag of tools or your toolbox that keeps these things in check you know that that's the way far and and get everybody to speak about it and once you once you talk about these things it's such a weight lifted off Ian on you can start moving forward with your life no matter what area in yeah like we're something else like we started this because I obviously had issues but like I felt never fulfilled and like doing something like this and porn out like like interviews and content to make people laugh and people enjoying it it's keeping folks on something I think it's like right now especially some people are not working like they don't know what to do during this epidemic and if we can put our videos on bring on kreygas like yourself then this is this will keep people stimulator and then maybe they'll like start doing something else you know yeah it's just yeah and like you guys are doing a great job and you're showing on and like I think no matter what you're doing no matter what your job is or watch our hobby is if you're pulling everything into it and you're making good content or you're doing your work and your pride in your work that's a good way like it fulfills you and you have to be doing things that are fulfilling yawn if you're not happy in your life or if you're doing a [ __ ] job but you don't like you need you need to work towards like and stop some plans to to to get yourself out the situation you're in and don't get me wrong I think I think like with depression some people fall into a the mindset and gets stoking it and just the feel like the world's against them and it is at a time like Butchie if you're not exercising if you're not eating healthy if you're not like working on your mental health you're always going to be stoking up mindset you know so it takes it that it takes you to take the steps you know to put these tools players to get through this situation and once you get out of that mindset and you look back on it you can see what was going on and you can work on not let yourself slip far back down into the darkness again 5k was they're very lovely down day to be thrown 5k I'm sure you've seen our room 5 q4 you donate five whatever I was like offer folks a cast a pastor because I said I'm a big boy you don't mean like those for case time come easy for me but I did it I'm not gonna do another one it's variable like they're like doing that first women like being able to achieve it like man something to me like like someone like you you probably do 5k we were always close you I mean well for me I'm like I was a lot you know and it is it this sort always Latian gives you that sort of time to just have to do things that you wouldn't normally yeah yeah it's a minute if you go onto social media every second person spoke up like their training videos and they're trying to pop their healthy eat and and also it's really good that people are actually putting time into those society things and I really think like an any society if doctors put a little bit more time to explaining to people how to eat healthy how to keep like supplement your body and you know your food and fitness it would really take a lot of pressure off the health system in Ireland you know it should be a product to school in fairness for like it's just a lack of education really you know I I actually I put on for the first time they say this year a few vegetables on in the garden and I'm looking forward to like picking my own vegetables fresh you know I'm having solids and he eat your own food from the garden and I think things like that is like it'll really help people and you feel a self of accomplishment when you're you're after growing your own food and that kind of thing like I'm a big fan of that kind of way of life favors and you have to give Kerry brazier a vegetable basket Terry you sign up to the fight dude I'll give you honey badgers calling you out and that's it and listen to me like I'm calling Terry out but it's a very respectful call there's no [ __ ] and boy I'm come on because I know he's a warrior and I know he'll show up and I know he's coming to fight so like I think our stylistic we match up really well I think it'll be a barn burner you know so that's dilatory October you know you want to fight in front that I doable and crown anyway play a honey badger for the show carry your own show next it's been a long time Colin like like in a way foreseeable unfortunately this situation that happens for Peter come on boy there they following and following your stuff and even I'm doing all the mental health stuff like I read he was a psych here as a legend sometimes make for hanging show thanks yeah we know the honey badger passed million for everyone for watching if you are watching home make sure the like share subscribe and as always stay energized
