Pa Lehane joins the Energized Show ahead of a Combate Global eight-man lightweight tournament framed as Mexico versus the United States. He explains how he came to represent Mexico after his prior opponent Isaac withdrew: teammate Liam messaged Combate Global matchmakers joking he was half Mexican, promoters took it seriously, and Pa was nicknamed La Sangriela for the weekend. He describes his unusual pro path: 3-0 in Combate Global, his second one-night tournament in months, and three bouts in one night if he wins outright—two opening bouts of one five-minute round each, then a three-round final. He plans a points-first approach to limit damage and stay medically cleared between fights, with Liam in his corner again. Pa says he has traveled to the United States three times in recent months, expects more Combate Global tournament opportunities because CEO Campbell favors that format, and intends to drop to featherweight and push for a title in the new year. He previews bracket opponents including Hugo Flores in the opener and possibly UFC veteran Jim Reed in the final, notes Paramount+ and Univision availability issues for Irish viewers, and says Campbell arranged a real Mexican citizenship appointment after joking about it. He also reflects on becoming a visible Cork MMA figure after his last tournament win and outlines sponsor shout-outs.

Kind: captions Language: en [Music] energize shower up the irish okay what's going on guys welcome to a brand new episode of energized russ introduce the guest map today we have the man with the most unique professional irish mma journey today we have pa la sanguila la han he is three and oh fighting over and combating global pi you're looking to go five now now tell us two fights one night how did this all come about uh yeah so there was a uh an eight-man tournament on compatible global it was meant to be um or meant to be mexico versus usa there's a good few bullets um and they're stuck for fighters so uh i saw it was my previous opponent that i fought isaac he was meant to be representing mexico but um we saw that he was pulled he pulled out due to injury or whatever um and we're actually on our way to corner a few of my my teammates over in england like so uh liam sent in the text into into the match into the group chat with the matchmakers in it and um you know he was half joker he said you know i'm half mexican or whatever so then they kind of took it seriously and uh they changed my nickname to la sangriela which is the leech in in spanish so now i'm mexican for the weekend and i'm i'm gonna be uh representing mexico in this eight-man tournament it's actually it's actually going to be three fights in one night to win to win it outright not two so it's one more than last week then last time jesus what's your favorite six no you'll go six or no if you win this tournament buzz this is the craziest story i've ever heard right yeah we've had power on before on the energizer's one to watch and then pal you've gone on and gone three and oh and now all of a sudden you got the got to this phone call like literally a few days ago and we weren't just straight away to get you back on so like for the people that are following us like the majority of our irish mma fans but knowing this story is going on is uh it's so brilliant to watch isn't it yeah it definitely is it's such a unique way of going about your professional career you know i mean like i think you're the only irishman to ever fight in compati global you're undefeated over there and you're finding terminal uh style which is not something that we see very often but we do see german styles but not you know one night tournaments and this time you might fight three times in the one night will there be two round fights three round fights and a five round fight or what way will the rounds work so the the the first two fights will be one round one five minute round each and then the winner will go on and then uh the the finals will be three five minute rounds will that change your style of fight knowing that it's only a one round fight yeah definitely it'll change the tactics a little bit like but um yeah we're gonna we're in it to win it like we're not just into to to just kind of go in aimlessly and fight like we're there we're gonna apply the proper tactics to win to win it like you know and uh obviously we can see uh liam doing his bits in the background there is this the first time you'll have him in your corner as a pro yeah of course leans in my corner all the time but this is is this his first time since you've turned pro that he'll be in your corner no no he was overwhelmed he was at the last one okay now i i knew i knew i knew ethan was there one of the times and i wasn't too sure if if he was there since but um yeah so what way will you go to actually into these these fights then so it's just about winning the round really like getting points and uh just winning on points really is the end of the game obviously if you can if i see a finish i'll go for it but um it's one round so and i don't want to take a lot of damage because if you if you obviously get caught you badly but you still win the first fight you might not be medically clear for the second fight you know what i mean so you have to be smart go into it obviously this is such a strange way of going around things the way that it's just like tournament way like i know obviously like when you you'd follow like most recently amateur in uh i remember you were fighting cage warriors in court but like this tournament format this is such a strange way to do that for your mma career to be going like like what just want to make of it all because it's all now you're back again you know i mean have you really had time to sit down and be like wow this is crazy yeah no i actually haven't like i've always been a very active fighter even when i was an amateur like i was fighting every very very regularly so it's not it's not strange to me or new to me it's it's normal obviously there's a lot more traveling involved than it's coming back over like i've been in america three times now in the past few months and i was never here before like so uh yeah it's definitely a change that way but it's a good change um and there's the reason we're doing like you know the so the owner of combative global the ceo campbell he he was uh one of the founders of the ufc as well like so obviously the first ufc was they they used to do torment styles so he he likes that style and that's why he's doing this as well so that's why there's a lot of tournaments in in this company and if you win if you win this tournament like are you looking for a toilet shop because that'll be 5-0 in the organization though i doubt many other people are 5-0 uh entering into the organization yeah yeah definitely so we're going to be obviously all my fights have been that lightweight because that's just what they've given me at the job taking all the fights and short notice and things like that but we're gonna go down to federal wait for for the next one and then we'll make a run for the title let's say in the new year positive like like it is it's just so left field compared to what everyone else is doing that it's actually brilliant it's such a unique story and you know what i'm sure you're probably getting extra spotlight because of it i'm sure if you fought on bellator at the weekend like you would have been another fighter or if you fought in cage where you should be another always running cage wires the fact that you're doing your own thing fighting over in combat global do you feel like you know there's more eyes on you because you're going such a unique way about us definitely like i'm doing it differently to everybody else like uh everyone's just gonna the traditional road or whatever and you know mcgregor lay down the pathway of the foundation to to make it that way and now i'm laying down the pathway for for all my fellow car clubs to to follow me in this direction and doing things so failed to have cork onions half mexicans exactly yeah and um obviously um last time your teammate uh went to uh ryan's plan didn't go his way but is there any talk to maybe getting him on a combat comeback uh global card in the future yeah yeah we were talking about it but obviously you know the mexicans are they're not there's not a lot of heavyweight mexicans out there so uh it's usually a lot a lot of lighter weight divisions but yeah we've talked about it we'll see well there's not a lot of heavyweight irish either so maybe we can find one yeah can you tell the people here listening now how they can actually watch this on friday and what time be roughly on it like for the irish folks yeah it's actually it's all over the place to be honest it'll be on very early in ireland and um it's on paramount plus and uh univision so that both channels are not available in ireland at the moment so you're gonna have to like download a vpn change your location and then get an illegal stream or whatever you know but uh yeah but i guess and what's the worth the effort 12. 12. i love it [Music] in there and he's fought this term and saw before and when you were fighting for the last time you had one finish and then the other one it was called it actually ended the round i actually thought it was a finish because uh yeah yeah you were literally about three seconds away from finish so i know i know you say you'll go in there and you'll try to win the realm or i don't know that you're trying to win the round yeah that's trying to win the round still for you seems to you know go very well in your favor yeah yeah definitely um so like in my division i have a couple of mexicans on my side of the bracket so there's an american side in the mexicans mexican side of the bracket so americans will fight americans and mexicans will fight mexicans and then when you get to the final an american will fight a mexican so uh yeah i'll have to fight two mexicans get to the final and then i'll fight an american um and on the american side of the bracket there's actually a a ufc veteran he has four fights in in the ufc um he's actually meant to fight mcgregor twice and they each pulled out of the fight at one stage years and years ago for the cage warriors title um what's his name jim reed yeah and i suppose uh what's funny enough is that you're pointing ireland or mexico's answer to paddy hulen your point hugo flores the hooligan in your first flight uh that's gotta be a funny one um what do you know much about do you know much about you go flores and you know where do you think his strong points are yeah so he's been around he's been fighting for a long time like he had his first pro fight when i was only 10 years old or something like that so he's been doing it a long time he's he's got 12 pro fights he's nine nine and three i think um he's yeah he's a strong kind of strong fellow he's got heavy hands but i'd say i'm going to be too fast for him and i'll be able to pick him yeah and apparently he he does look like a tough out as well he's been in there with that ignacio bahamadez who's a ufc fighter now so you know he's been in there with uh some veterans as well he's probably your most experienced opponent to date so again it's nice to see you're 3-0 and you're taking another step open uh competition yeah definitely he and he went five rounds with him as well so it's not like he just you know it wasn't like a three-round fight he went five runs with a fella that's now in the ufc so but obviously after doing the last uh tournament and now coming into your like second tournament like is there things in the like is the things you did in the first tournament that you're like right i'm definitely going to stick with that this time around or is there things you did the first time that didn't work too well that you know i had to fix this time around because you seem very relaxed yeah i know because i i've obviously done a lot of novice competitions in ireland and i've done amateur like the eye masters day day after day you fight and and i obviously did that for the one night tournament as well only a couple of months ago so i know exactly what i'm getting myself into and and uh i know how to deal with you know when you win one fight relax focus on the next fight everything that happened in the last round is completely over and done with and uh you just focus on the next one so i know how to deal with it and i'm just gonna stick with the same process can you tell us a bit more about that because obviously you're like you're aiming to get to the funnel the same night and you're like right you have to get by the first round without getting taken too much damage like and but usually people going into place they're not overlooking their opponent so what sort of way are you like treating that is like liam liam oak they're like telling you stuff like what sort of way does that work so we're just putting 100 focus on the first fight because there's no point in focusing on the second entire fight and not be able to get there so everything into the first play and then when we're done that we focus on the second fight and focus on the final we've obviously looked at every one of the opponents in in all the divisions so um we know what we have a brief understanding of all of them so um yeah we'll just focus on the first fella first and then go from there yeah it's definitely interesting looking at your side the bracket then you know i'd say christian perez is probably a heavy favorite to win on his side the bracket i'm sure you've probably assumed that yourself as well he's also undefeated so if you guys do clash someone's almost go and it it would be a good fight uh his opponent that daniel soto has lost his last four fights so you you'd have to assume the undefeated prospect would be the favorite there and then like it does look like jimmy layers is the favor to win on that side and you know you have to believe beating him in the final uh especially in the term up uh tournament format i'm especially being the only non-mexican or american fighting in the competition would definitely spark interest in the media and it would definitely put your name more in that limelight and it would be a big scout for yourself what would winning this tournament actually yeah as well sorry because i was saying what would winning the tournament mean to you it would mean i got i get a lot of money i have a very merry christmas and uh you know i actually i i campbell had a interview there a couple of days ago but i forget some news anyway and uh he i thought he was joking he said that i'm actually getting my mexican citizenship or whatever and then i was just i thought it was a joke and then yesterday i was told i actually have a uh an appointment with someone from the embassy and i've got to get my mexican citizenship for this fight so i actually will be a mexican dana white got citizenship of abu dhabi parliament citizenship of mexico all over pi is there um a prize purse for winning this tournament is there a set amount do you know how much you'll win yeah i do yeah i do don't share no i'm not really at all yeah it's too wrong it's a it's a contract so i can't say oh okay last time you won the tournament what like what sort of press did you get around cork as well because there's like there's not many core counting fighters that are like still in cork obviously john mitchell's uh over in dubois and i like i think after that winning the last competition you become the face of core county and mma like what what sort of reception did you get online after like such a big just a curveball sort of big win yeah yeah it's been absolutely mad like even online has been crazy but in person as well like when i'm when i move around anywhere everyone everyone recognizes me now from from fighting so it's been it's been crazy yeah it's only going to walk from here as well you know i am the face of cork mma right now so it's only going to get bigger and will limo get a uh extra big christmas present if you win this tournament this year of course you will like course you will oh i i i absolutely love it um and pat what a voice would you have for fighters who are considering maybe going a different route on their professional career than the standard cage warriors or bellator options um i think i've kind of laid the foundation to do it now so it's going to be a lot easier for them obviously i got i got it with a lot of hard work and a lot of luck as well so um yeah it's gonna be easier for everyone following me so i think we're gonna be breaking into uh europe and we're gonna have a few fights in spain and things like that as well so and we'll try and get them to ireland as well in the new year maybe so we'll see and here's your spanish coming along um not very good they've been telling me to learn spanish but liam's own is rolani he's about 50 days in iran doing uh one of those apps on duolingo duolingo he's raving about everyone every spanish person he sees he's like you're trying to talk to me you're saving all the playing fields for the cage we want to give a shout out to eaton and fufu for winning over the weekend as well uh before we wrap things up what is the what is the number one thing what is the main thing what is the one thing that really sticks in your head that limoges taught you during your uh your career in mma that's a tough question he's literally taught me everything i know so uh yeah but like what's the what's the one thing that like is just it is the essence of paula sangria i really don't know that's a tough question like he's he's taught me everything like so i i know i will then ask ashley moog ashley mark what's the main thing he thinks he's put into your game what's the main thing i think you've taught me as a mixed martial artist how did you earn money how there are money he says here we go it's probably it's probably the most important thing if you want to be a professional footer you have to make a living that's it yeah yeah ross you've been asked to say before we give a part of the floor to tell it to the han owners how they support the main man no i just want to say par the very best look i think it's the most fascinating journey in irish mma at the moment it's quite inspirational in its own right that you you've gone your own route i think it's fantastic so best look to yourself and lee moog over there flying the irish flag under under the mexican banner thank you very much so make sure to check out pod this friday november 12th on combat
