Energized Show hosts Ross and Barry record a guest-free World Mental Health Awareness Week episode during COVID-19 lockdown, urging listeners that it is okay not to be okay and to talk to someone. They cite 2018 Irish suicide figures—352 deaths, 282 male—and say suicide among young males is especially prevalent. Ross says a recent conversation and prior guest Sir Stevo Timothy, who is paraplegic, pushed them to use the platform for real talk beyond UFC, rugby, and football schedules. Both share personal struggles: lockdown anxiety, a past year off the rails with heavy drinking, earlier depression medication, coming out to family before telling each other, and relapsing after posting then deleting an old kitchen video. They praise walking in a neutral venue to open up, warn against drinking to escape problems, and wrap with self-care advice. The conversation also covers their podcast growth during lockdown—daily 20–50 minute episodes, booking Jamie Heaslip, Sean O'Malley, Darren Conway, Gary Michael Conlon, The 2 Johnnies, Dylan Moore, and others consecutively—and Ross giving up alcohol for two months while treating the show as viable full-time media work.

okay what's going on guys welcome to a brand new episode of energized today we have a very special guest on the show no really we just have me for that point it is World Mental Health Awareness Week this week so me and Barry you're just gonna have a quick chat about and tell you sort of our takes on what's important to you cause obviously we're locked down at the moment it's a much harder time for people we just want to you know let people know what it's okay to not be okay it's good to talk what do you think by yeah I agree I agree and like we told a couple shows this week and we probably up with a guess and [Music] like I talk to Ross after one of the shows being like and did not ask me baby men tell to that go down okay and then bus was like this is sort of like you're a tank not like you're paying portly but something that you really care about and like it if it doesn't really affect other people they it wouldn't be as important maybe or it doesn't really hit home read if document correctly poor damn Ross also mentioned one of the shelves as well but we have sir Stevo Timothy on the show and he's like a paraplegic and he's never doing for a second for okay and he can't even walk so bus was like we should use our platform more often to speak out about things not just about what UFC events on this weekend or what Ruby event or what football game is going on and I hope centigrate because I'm did that platform now it was like as we said to the to to Johnny's whom he just had in the show like people wanna hear like real talk and they do real people listen to these stuff and they want to hear like you mean real stuff yeah I think it's very important to you know talk where things up maybe some other uncomfortable to talk about and also talk about things that you know uh you know very prevalent in people our age as well especially young males and just disorder give you anything into mental health you know I mean in thousand 18 352 people took their own lives and 282 of them which is 80 percent of them for males so like suicide is such a prevalent thing in young males and autumn I mean like 282 P for a year is a lot and I think we both agree it's two hundred and eighty two too many yeah I'm like one of those like it when you look at just numbers sometimes it doesn't really hit home for late I'm sure someone is listen now like they either are related to someone or they have a friend that your suffers with mental health issues or have have like taken all noise you know in this state this it is real like it is real I'm like hopefully someone who's listening to this show or watching this show is not one of them numbers no hopefully not you know and yeah we never want anyone who listen to the show to ever fall victim to suicide and words actually we're not like purpose or whatever and we're not you know professionals Oh like we are always here to talk talk and someone needs to talk them I mean like a lot of people have medicine uh you know lockdowns really hard and like your shows made a lot easier and you know we're putting the podcast and day in the or we're doing a few weeks you know I mean they're like our you know there's you know twenty to fifty hair long however long many minutes the podcast is that like it's really like growing up today we lived in here and that and that's why we do the podcast or yeah you know world mental health and your own mental health is far bigger than any podcast I think it's really important to take now old ah um you know when you see you know when Chris did is walk for PA the houses of a lot you know we really want to get behind it cuz I made love to us yeah well like for people have been following us for ages or listen to our stuff they be aware that we've been covering mental health I've covered numerous times like obviously we don't do every show about but like it does play a part yeah in I love what we do and especially now Ross like I mean like we're after being locked in for like two months and like who knows what certain well some people are going through they care like whether it be like you know I remember the first week when we were in lockdown I was literally like like you know paranoid we have dinner what to do like I was issue like I'm gonna get it and I'm gonna give to my whole family I'm gonna and killing them all like that's that's that's what was going through my head fortunately things of keep like calm down and like boy doing the show and we're going from like doing exercise and going out it's like kept me mentally stable you know I mean because they couldn't like before like I've gone like I've like gone off the rails and they were like it's like a cool year like I just wasn't myself dude I just changed as a person and I was just like I didn't know what the [ __ ] was gonna and they all see I was drinking too much going over too much but they it was all to get away from what was going on and like before I was unlike I was our name tablets for depression and it was just like at the beginning I was on such a massive high of to be talking well I said it before but like then afterward I just became a Percy beau effect and it was just really what what am I even doing taking these and then I got mom to not taking anything but like I feel like doing the show is like almost hair being away or I know like there is younger people listen to this and they sort of they put it on oh what they sort of wants in life you know yeah well I always think in every aspect of your life there's always choices and choices you have to make there's always an easier option and then sometimes it's a harder option and sometimes it's easier just go on the drink have a few drinks I'm just forget about all your problems well Dan your problems don't go away tomorrow I mean your problems are waiting around the corner for you to come around the harder often is to actually you know face your problems um you know actually discourse your problems with someone and I think one the hardest thing to do is probably find that person you're comfortable talking to I was talking to a friend Manya stay and if you do have a problem oil we find for me what works best is if you actually find something you're comfortable talking to and then bring them to like a neutral venue it's not make sense like going for a walk and talking about their cuz I mean you don't want to talk to someone in your space then they're in your space and you're gonna talk some in their space because you're under spaced review brain it's like a neutral ground I find it's much easier to be open and also if you do go for a walk with someone I feel like that's a release is more positive endorphins and then you're probably more open to like talk about how you feel that's what I think no no honestly no I think that's a great idea cuz like I mean really like I was they always found the press for a focus going on it's just shy and like I didn't want to tell anyone cuz I press well people like he's weird or he's a historian or not go near him and then like you're afraid like your family won't really accept you or your friends we like out here don't be around low lad I'll just start the order but like I even like to eat on you like remember like I think you were pretty one the first and I was just I don't know I told my family first now it's all basic told you next go like I was just like what if like he does want to be my friend anymore he doesn't want to do the show anymore but then like it was just don't know it's just good decision you know well I do think like if people react negatively to you they're probably not the people you should have in your life yeah I mean if someone actually cares enough about it but then they accept you for who you are yeah and you they accept you for your flaws you mean so I think that is you know quite prevalent than quite obvious you mean your friends your friends your families your family you know your friends um you should accept it for who you are um we only start I only thought today it was hours ago I don't know when it's gonna go what a bore noisy loans I like to revere than like people who don't know he's like a really famous Welsh rugby referee and he came out gay to his family before we did like he overdosed on a lot of painkillers and like drank a bottle of whiskey and like he was gonna kill himself with a shotgun but then like he actually passed a bow because he took so much drink and drugs and ended up in a coma at the end of the day like acceptance sometimes isn't easy like it's not to do with like whether okay or and okay but like just accept your own flaws is hard and you know accepting you're in the wrong at times we hard when these are all things I'm like you struggle with on a daily basis and at the end of the day you can play such like mental more games with yourself and you can get yourself and such like stay over the small things like I mean sometimes like two people might say the same thing tip and then you're like they would talk maybe that's why they both said that the oh man but they might never of talked about you know me and but then like you're getting your own head and you're getting paranoid and then like you know you can like to let yourself worth drop and you can you know get in your own head walk like I said earlier you always have a choice you can choose to make a situation better or you can choose to ignore situation I know the problem make it worse go I always think you sort of have to make those choices and those choices aren't always easy like I don't want people think that on say I'll tease you choose this way or that way that's not what why don't they go be a band like you're no worth we're talking to each other like I know other people to listen but I mean like you're you you see me am i worse than you see me at my best and everything in between but like you're sort of thought like you you've been to a boy going with it true with me you know so like a boy I'll tell you to stop yeah boy I think you're wrong you also think we actually have had our best shots let me just go in for a while together like just talk on a walk cause like it is a neutral venue it is like sort of your also like it's just you and that other person then you know I mean you know if you're in your own house Turing and someone else's house I mean like you're afraid to like be vulnerable because someone else might walk in and be like what's wrong with that fella yelling people struggle to be open like you mean like I probably did was 480 weeks for I let you know what's going on with me you know in you like you're more open you'll tell me almost straight away that's them that all work on myself in like crazy that's like let my feelings go because otherwise because once you you know what they say like a problem shared is problem haft or actually firmly believe in that like once I get a load things off my chest like alright ground like relax them you know mean like I've said Allah only he can really let the little things build on top yeah yeah they did they don't want this for us in any way sort of a a song story or a number like as I heard and you said it creams you like it now that we have people they tune in like none of them are gonna be home set for it you know and I see it like if they like I know where Kyle energized and we have the crack and we're known for happen to be a cracked like but like seen that there isn't reside the three is more today's that it's not just like two characters is actually two actual humans and that's what people really want to hear they want to know exactly that like Ashley maybe like he sort of like me like you I don't know what I want to do I think I think like when I did first made it I would like if they're just like such a way off my chest and like I remember we put our video of years ago memory in my kitchen talking about it and like I actually like took it down because homebuyers to belabor that well like that tells me a few years going like Oh psych oh I'm over it now but then like I went back even worse and now I'm doing better so like I don't want to be like this is how you get it over it because I went back into you help me food and I think it's like a never ending thing it's just like you just have to consciously say on top things also back in like I didn't know what I wanted to do and what passage or route and Laurie Fisher I want to do as well like you know and like that can be huge problem because like when I was younger like I just play sport all the time all time like like football golf tennis squash ruining everything like it it's so much my life was just so routine that all sudden when I started turning like 16 17 18 when I started drinking and so fun I was like holy [ __ ] like there's more to just being active all the time and then he started like being girls or going out my clothes and all you get my jacket or girls and I poop I'm boy bound to its to get into Michael's Porter yeah I think I sort of lost my way and I was really like I think like 25 I was like I was working and banking for about five years and I was like I don't want to just keep the owner stressful life and then obviously took a huge chance me even work to try and get into the media industry just working as anything and then building ourselves up and then I'm like I think I think now over the last few months things really really come together like a meme or like like if before the stock day I'm Russell feel like if you look at what we were doing compare what I do we do now it's [ __ ] chalk and cheese man like oh yeah well it's it's all sitting in my living room talking shirt Austin feeling somewhere Ireland's top talent yeah I'm in and then even like yeah if you tell me what's called three months ago that we were ad like Jamie he said Sean O'Malley Darren Conway in Gary Michael Conlon to join a no Carol the to Johnny's evil Timothy all these guys are on our podcast like and like consecutively like roll one after I'm like I'm like you want to the win the lotto and they you have to pay the matter what sorry little bit when we started so I always had that vision now we're gonna get these people are like I knew but I didn't know how I was like how are we gonna get them into your living room yeah so no I was like I was like poor Hey where's the food yup yeah and then like also seeing like Joe Rogan find a hundred million a year deer like it's also inspiring and sort of that so like for Allstate that's like hero like obviously we're not Charo him probably never will be that big I mean like that's like no I'm like that's the biggest new world I mean like that's obviously the dream boy like in terms of real realistic like he did also to calm terror for UFC less people calm Joe Rogan a Mike Goldberg come forward you know it before like it's just saying that it's like there's such money in podcast at the moment unlike were like fighting our way forward to get there yeah like bring up to Joe Rogan team when I started listening to shows after that like a foreign kid talking about it and the brilliant idiots with Charlemagne and and controls school and going into detail being like Charlemagne like albergue our dream was to have a show on a radio station no matter how big or small they're in like a Trudy ground a year and then we'd be happy like those like I was like Europe I was like I'd be a comb through happy doing after Assam like that was that was that was the drain and then I wasn't like when we kept you in the shows and we're doing everything ourselves and no one gave us an unknown even wondered like like meet us for coffee to like give us information to grow or to stand you dirty it was sort of like us down hardness was I knew that like we still had something there that because people did actually tune in and then like when Charlemagne was just was this course and he'll like radio stations they don't invest in talent that it's on radios almost become with you box and then they're unsure doesn't like for the younger listeners what did you box to box it's just basically like it's just basic it's nothing at any rockets where you put the 2017 you can pick what song comes up yeah like radio is just broken and they've stopped invest in town like to like some Howard Stern's or the like Charlemagne's put in the last yeah great radio presenter that's of that ilk and they now called Shaw roads after transferring out a lot of for now now Spotify is good is is podcasts are a big deal now like I mean you don't make that move wherever no money's coming in the back end and they're like your radio stations like especially I only miss turbo a long time ago like why do you know one go right we'll give Rob lifts it a narrow narrow set on Saturday where you can talk about health and fitness yeah if you know some makeup artists an hour on Friday know between 6 and 7 and cheek and talk about like what's the best makeup to be used at the moment and then you know you sort of go on and go on you know there's plenty talented people in this country but it takes you piss-take right Paul I know you've been hosting from 4:00 to 6:00 for the last 20 years you have any kids could they deal with after your tour brilliant yeah I do I think like now no like what we just have to do in the last open once like it it's sort of like something like you know I don't care if we're comedian because we have this show now and their stuff is gonna come back Ruby matches are gonna return MMA is already returned football is going to return still fit life is still gonna go on and like we we can just as easily do this work a full-time job as well and they do work media though yeah no but like no buzzient like this is media yeah I know yeah but like even like basic work and almost paycheck to paycheck to like try and chase this dream and now it's just like we don't need that like look look I guess we got on show ourselves like we didn't we don't need like a naked someone else to get them guests on the show whereas I talked we previously did but now we already have these people that will come on and I was there every day each day each everyone went perfectly like I mean more than more than sure that Oh - come on again so like I mean we can just continue like we can just vote folks in this and they were our work on the other side and then like we can just keep providing as much count as we want you know I had some favorite guests like I know for you like year Bala gave really was one of the best ones to get but you watch him for so many years yeah see there's a difference between like getting someone was really hard or you see it was hard and then also getting someone who has an amazing story or or the crack you had with someone that was just really like I mean for instance like the crack we had with Dylan more and like I felt like we knew him for years like the story that he told us all the background story the Conor McGregor stuff the Royce was unbelievable you know mean Blakey like even one more like I know Perry was just in the show and like he was talking about like Harrogate was meant health and the injury the sovereignty to retire from for public yeah you're hearing all these amazing stories and Lake these are I think this is something we're gonna look back on we got all of it being like can't believe we've had these interactions of these people so personal as well because like it's not our having a point it's not having a coffee when no one's looking at their phone it's just soul like just so slowly focused on the conversation I had which is like it's a little thing that's gone a bit obscure an hour an hour sort of generation of people that like you know just open flow converse a patient like doesn't happen as often as a short I do think that's that's another thing that like it sort of on trauma mental health is that like people spend so much time like on their phone or like head buried in their phone I'm like we're probably both guilty of it as anyone I mean or it's one of those times very if you actually leave your phone in a different room and like how much Pat what someone for a while you know in it it's incredible like you know the sort of serotonin that your brain releases dil no no I I think like I don't see we don't like we don't like the one too long because like we said how mature only poor that I think I was were inevitable but that's like a huge thing that's after happening that's like that's maybe like us for a while like when we were recording in your room onto a phone and they could be like what where's this going or like how do we take it to the next level like see like what we have to do on the last two months then teach your own get a massive deal it's like I feel like that's almost reassuring me that what we've been doing has been the right thing you know me like I never ever wanted to quit like ever because the end of day we're always gonna be mates and we're always going to talk about the sport so we made a little put a mic in front of it what I mean it was just like I knew that something the podcast was gonna be it was gonna get a seal of approval you know like I remember Howard Stern who I absolutely loathe he like said podcaster and were useless later at garbage like you I mean sort of things like you bass you wrote them off and now Joe Rogan's basically like this generations Howard Stern you know all sorts harasser never just went you know I was wrong that's our doom podcast know that it was the coldest on a massive contract to say my jaw rounded but also pay $30 a month to subscribe and listen so he can't write that off because you have to pay for probably have to pay the radio company of force and ago that their yeah because you can get spotter point for free or Apple iTunes for free pull like you have to pay for him physically that's way it's not the same and also like you sort of change the stolid as he gotten older and it's not as like crazy and wacky you know poor them things how people of all the people change you know mean and the hope you get the more friend you get with people the less you can bash them boredom but that like like just over the last couple months as well I know just could be it could be a mathlete to terrible time for people or massively cool time for people like oh he was really afraid of how long we were gonna be spoke like this and like for a moment I was like I'm not gonna turn into a [ __ ] hermit like it's like just freaking out or like what and then doing this has helped some watch and like I think it'd be a great thing for people right now if they're what's new psych and I think about stuff like taking this time to really really think why you actually want to do when things get back to normal or whatever and the next normally is because now is the time to like start building the blocks they can mean look myself or us words we're out to get people on and like I mean I haven't drank a two months and I like they go we always like Train and they're do they or us and like I actually can't move put it like it was just that double I knew that was right thing to do and like say if you would like what like start apologize started inhaled like people are available now to come on your shows like if you want to do cooking stuff stop recording now like if you want to become a famous take talker start walking down some now you don't mean did like now is the [ __ ] time like right you know cause like don't come out of this lockdown and everything situation and be like I'm going to start now yeah don't be reactive be proactive um I think just to sort of wrap things up on the medal of health I think because very energized going on tangent and look they know us you know what's our death bury us well it's just one of those things to find you're a person you can talk to and sometimes it's not the person you think it's gonna be you mean it's not always you know your best mate or your mom and your dad sometimes I think it's like to say but we're colleague or someone you know maybe he's gone through before I mean they won't Georgia know fine who your person is just talk to them and just keep talking he sort of you know let people know how you feel don't bottle up your feelings I think that's a real thing that like sort of loves men our age do so try not do try be more open and you know look after yourself you know take some time for a bit of self care if you enjoy going to the gym work now go to the gym workout or even though you walk man swear to God yeah home exam yeah but I'm saying do what you enjoy to do if you like gone for a swim go for a swim I mean if you like you know watching a funny movie make sure once we you sit down and you watch a funny movie and you just laughed out loud you know in just take some time to look after yourself yeah you have to like you have you have to do something different because there is so many people out there who do care about you unlike glycan look I don't want to sound bad but like it you would you you'll be letting yourself down and Dan down if you didn't like to wear character or like to know me like you know I'm not gonna say selfish because I'd only be like being selfish but it's just like you can change the situation you you can't like just like even sit down write something down be like what would I like to do what like what I'd like to go for this job or like you don't mean like a like I know we're just talking about podcast is that in your dirt like if you want to say if you wanted to be a butcher or you wanted to be like if that start dude dance and there's something like you mean just all these for the onions like boil it down and go for because these days nobody gives a [ __ ] we do like like you what spin out this video like I know what like I'll begin oh gosh [ __ ] emotional and I was like don't even [ __ ] start crying for like I was like I don't care about this video on it now because I get people if people are gonna be like are looking in fluent at this town you're like I mean who the [ __ ] away like the people that people that like actually care about what you do will support you and watch what you do and the other people won't and so it's it's time you know because no one's gonna be sitting here watching this whole video being like these till has been lying case yeah well you know you know what they say don't be a hater be a creator you know yeah people are too busy at home anyway doing their own [ __ ] trying to do their own [ __ ] so they're not gonna bother it gives us and off there I am if you watch this whole video thanks million and if you followed everything we've done recently and even longer like I mean thanks a million because like we as you can probably tell if you've been here a while like really kicking into asteroid now that like yeah we're tasting 10 subscribers more other ways to get there yeah but everything we're just like like as excited as I am for things to happen I just like right now we're we're doing exactly well and I'm doing exactly what I like what are we really taught the show will be you having these amazing guests on and like I knew it was gonna happen I just didn't know how good like unfortunate took a pandemic to do a boy like we decided that like in the world the worse situation in the world we took advantage of that situation in a good way and like like at the end they all with all I ever want to do is like do showing the best make many people ask about good information and be like honest about it and I can the if you look back to a between each one I think it's so evidence and I think at the end there we are every really nice guys and we do have like the best intentions are I got hurt so that that's what good things have happened because I think a lot of time but around myself down for like better things not happen but like local doctor happen now like you know Kumar Bosma go is time to medium for watching I hope you talk something positive away from this and maybe just you know say something nice to warn your friends or something like that you know probably not birthday be you be happy and as always stay
