okay what's the story guys and welcome to a brand new episode of energized today we have a very special guest on the show we have a switch and Charlton and most importantly Irish legend ma reece-holland my hair's gone yeah pretty good guys thanks for having me on and getting by everyone's keeping safe from well yes same same same to yourself ma there it's a crazy world that we're living in at the moment and people are missing the football man I don't they but they're not getting their fix you know I mean you're not kidding we're all missing our football I'm used to I'm used to sort of going at games midweek weekends and and the fact you know there's nothing to watch it the moment regurgitating old stuff and trying to run off sort of watch them as much as I possibly can on Sky somebody old Premier League years and stuff but even so it's hard going without any live look the moment yeah especially when you know the results that's when you know the results you watch it's hard to watch the game again isn't it even when you know the results so yeah it's pretty tough it is or they're bad obviously you do a lot of poetry as well how are you keeping stimulated as well I'm doing as many podcasts as I possibly can guys I'm joking yeah and I am doing a few bits and pieces I'm able to work for Mike I've got like microphone and stuff set up here so I've done I've done talkSPORT Cup attention from here the Premier League you I work for as well they set up thing called cloud cast and they're putting out a daily show half an hour daily show every day as well so I've got one of those lined up on Thursday and talking about captains so that should be that should be good fun as well so I'm doing a few bits and pieces missing he's keep me busy all the jobs Gardens never looks like society nice yeah I'm mucking out the halls imagine keep busy yeah you look like you've a bit of a tan as well so he must be there it was at the garden with a boy is playing a playing football actually that's great and ya got the copy of berm how many boys have got two boys yeah it's crazy building everything's counselled their weddings like you can attend funerals I have a normal dog at home like I always pose how Kristen can't have that and I mean like my mom's birthday was the other day and like you know I mean like after like go down like wave to her it's crazy he is if you're born if your boy in April it's a bit of a nightmare my birthday is on Saturday so I haven't bought you anything I said a nice fine don't worry about it do something after it afterwards when it's we were able to get out this lockdown but yeah if you're born in a place been a bit of a nightmare yeah I know what you're fishing for Matt ok we'll join your resume calm hum beer with you don't worry about yeah if you can more person into that for a beer who would you invite it one more here yeah good question good question yeah somebody has someone has to try and make me last wouldn't it krikey try and make it entertaining can we bring in good question well I will come back to it we'll come back that up very end yeah Matt first of all it's been announced by the FAA that the new manager Stephen Kennedy's after taking over from Mike McCarty what was meant to happen was Steve Kenny was meant to take over after the euros or if aren't qualified or not Mick McCarthy didn't get to see out the job what are you feel a part in this because I've seen it but correctly was your previous manager yeah and I loved as well obviously no Mick a long time and even even after the island stuff he was manager of it for six years as well so quite recently I've been switch a few times and seen in there as well so yeah it's a shame really what's happened and how it's panned out because I think he probably deserved the opportunity to see the job through I personally would like to have seen him you know keep the job for the playoffs and and see if it went well then for the euros next year as well but that's not to be I think he's decided himself he's contracts up he's gonna walk away from it but I person would have liked to have seen the job through really I'm a massive fan of me he's the most honest loyal manager that you could ask for so it's it's a real shame that it's ended this way yeah I actually taught the FBI we're gonna I know they first well I don't think they should have like a point of like said Stephen was going to take over ain't like I just don't think that's how you run a club being like already the next manager is going to come here or there now it was a strange one at the time wasn't it because you know what if me had qualified the euros had taken place this this year it done brilliantly yeah was it then is it then good by me if you know you've done super bleep but actually you're still going so it did seem strange to make that announcement as early as they did yeah it was almost like an interim manager job really except like a very very dull one you know oh and so one sorta they take over for you know when somebody got a sack from the assistant takes over what boy it was weirdly being that the interim manager had a better CV then the new manager come in and yeah and and actually you know you saying to me it was only ten games so he's quite a short tenure as well really in that respect I know timewise it seems a long time but actually don't usually in charge ten matches yeah it only lost one of the ten as well so it wasn't like done a bad job either I also think it's strange but the qualification period isn't over so Mike he has those players playing a specific way they had placed over here and then whoever else wins the other's name for I think it's between Northern Ireland and Wales team Katie's first game in charge from be against Slovakia it's actually not really a great place to start because like if you lose that game then people are automatically on being handsome and be obviously doesn't have the reputation of international management or managing like Premier League players yes it is a tough one well would say is though the decisions been made and you know nothing we're gonna do to change that now so everyone should get behind Stephen and his team really you know he's got some good guys alongside him as well Keith Andrews as well so we you know we need to get behind him and his team really and try and focus on that game because the most important thing is trying to qualify from euros see home games as well in EE and I'm something special I know it'd be amazing dude what what do you think Stephens gonna bring to the team as well no map because Ozzie he's he's had the only twenty ones do you think he's actually gonna move all some of the players or do you think he's gonna stick with a squad that makers been keep staying loyal to it be it be interested I you know I think naturally when a new man comes in they want to do things slightly differently to the predecessor now they have their own ideas about how they want to play have their own preconceived ideas about individuals as well and what type of players they are so I think it's natural it will come in and make some changes how big those changes aren't B&C but you know he lost II rely heavily on his staff as well and I'm sure he would be conversing with Mick you know readily as well about getting his opinions on on the individuals and players so but there's there's naturally gonna be one or two changes and look there might be one or two the younger ones you get an opportunity of being so you know yeah well what sort of changes would you make just because I'm see you're always keeping an eye on it what I do I think he's a I think it's deviously personnel-wise the group isn't as big as we perhaps like it to be I think goals has been the major problem hasn't it over the last couple years and that's the big thing now I think there are one or two really good young young ones coming through now our only lead Troy parent there's one or two younger ones not quite ready yet maybe you know Mick said he wasn't quite ready Troy parrot for instance but that's that's bit the biggest area of concern really if we can try and sort that out that'd be that'd be better yeah did you like the play with your front or would you like the three difficult really I think it all depends on who you coming up against and how the opposition play you know I think when you've got a team that's very strong in midfield I think I think it's dangerous to play with just two central midfield players because I think the quality of international level is is such that you know you'd have to be a little bit careful about about playing two up top and being a little bit exposed in midfield and it depends on who you are in the centre of the picture as well but I think it's horses for courses really and depends on who you're coming up against yeah we're looking to have a very solid offense as well yeah I mean actually but personnel-wise and you look at it a lot that the players suit about three they'd be interested to see whether where there's you know Stephen Kenny goes that way or not but a lot of the lads play a back through at club level so let's see what he does with Sheamus Coleman and I was like what you do there with Ozzy Seamus Coleman's cotton but like Matt Doherty like low blood Larry's bleed might be our only the best player yeah I think a thing in a battery you could play them because I think Sheamus has done it for everything actually and played in a you know almost coming into a battery position really at time so he could easily play in that in that role and he might actually suit him as well the energy that Matt Scott is frightening you know the way he burst forward and he's you know and when goals are an issue as they as I said they have been well he's good for a goal but you know even even just by some of the runs that you Mason creates opportunities for others as well so I'm like no I'd like him to play you know it's just it's just beating him em really he's used to playing in the battery and give him that license to get bored when he plays on the back for it's slightly different a bit more defensive responsibilities and less chance to get forward but when he plays he is good for a go yeah so who do you pair alongside up Ozzie John Egan's been incredible this here at Coleman and then who would you have is your percent off Kieran Clark well Saint Duffy as well I think that's more a case really if the way that Brighton play a little bit of a victim of that because Graham Potter once he's really comfortable at the back on the ball Adam Webster someone who is that type of player as well at the back for Brian and he's gone with him more readily than than Shane but he's never let Ireland know and he's come up with some big goals as well so I think it'd be hard for him to be left he's a weapon of his weapon in the box as well four corners and throwing it worried a lot back well happy nice yeah face is unbelievable in both boxes and and so I think that he'd be important for us still and then I'll say and the Stephens been natural revelation disappear Jeff there's no I didn't like what a player like he's marked on the door for team of the season this year yeah I've been excellent chef I'll try and think of the game it was now he's called an absolute rocket I put up at Sheffield just a few weeks but he got taken off our stomachs he picked up an injury but he's really fair the chef United have been X and the way that they've attacked the pending this sees nothing everyone has been a bit surprised by it really and no one perhaps anticipating how good they're gonna they were going to be but they've risen to the challenge and he's one of those players that's really stood out I work and dedication that's what they're putting in but they're awesome at the midfield as well what sort of making me feel and who do you think Stephen will go with as well there cuz if I mean my player three might play too it will be interesting to see what to see which way he goes now I like kind of Harahan play against someone yeah someone who gets a goal from midfield that will make those runs forward I do like him and I think he's been a little we are done by Villa as well not played as much as he should have done at times this season you know I'm looking at Villa and position that they're in him him and Jack Greely she's got a really good relationship as well yeah you know he's I think they get on quite well off the field and and you can tell that there's a good relationship on the pitch as well with those two so I'm surprised that he hasn't played feature more for Villa Jeff Hendricks obviously got good energy and and someone who doesn't get likes to get in the box at times it's I don't know I mean that's obviously Stephen Kenny's decision and seeing where he goes but I think Connors someone who perhaps deserves more of a chance yeah well you won't be looking at your phone waiting for a call now Glenn we're back if it has seen me in the garden the other day definitely won't be calling me now who put the grass in the pitch from a field undiscovered it's like you don't wanna be too hard like it is it is a bit more standard when you look at a fancy like that's a very good defense like that's the international level and maybe a dose with standards and they're like I can't always just help but think of magic behind Grealish and Royce it'd be different for a man but like it doesn't always go that way for you I mean you can't do it you know if supports you not man like it's incredible to see how far you keep down yeah I mean they're both really good players I don't I don't think declan's played as well this season he did the previous year I think he's a terrific ly talented player and he's he's someone that's going to go to the top you know he's gonna he will leave West Ham and so will Jack really I think he'll leave Villa as well in the summer whether Declan rice stays at West Ham another year called - maybe but Jack Rishi's getting to an age now where you feel as though he's ready to kick on and he's he's really impressed everybody I think this season 10 days ago whatever it was well I'm locked down so yeah he needs to be nice to obviously be wary of that and particularly gonna play you know maybe night obviously heavily I'm gonna play at a club like that and the intensity and scrutiny on you is absolutely immense you've got to be very careful about how you conduct yourself off the field as well you think some teams will would like not be interested now or do you think they'd just overlook that and be like to know why he's actually back board we should we can fix them you know I mean yeah I I think you'd not be hesitant but I think he it would it would play on your mind as a manager you'd look into it I mean managers sign players one of the first thing they do is they they phone around and say what's he like because everyone can see what he's like as a player and when is on the pitch what's he like off the field is he going to disrupt things is he going to be a problem and and that sort of stuff so that's one of the first things that manager does really when he's looking at signs someone tries to find that bit back another thing is the interruptin as well phileas captain and that and actually yeah i think he looks like he's matured a lot in the last kind of years it doesn't he does appear that way he's made a mistake and he's held his hands up he knows he knows he was wrong but it is something that you would think about as much but at the same time he you also look at it and say is he gonna improve was on the pitch and he and he will improve a lot seems on the pitch I think he's actually just needed to be a dangerous person with downtime because when he has a gaming weekend we go he's never in trouble but like given two or three weeks off and then next thing you know he's in the paper yeah well some of them he might be playing June and July and we might be back that season might start again in August and so yes not right this is his break now maybe he's learned so we'll see Ruby well but we also want to get into your football and career as well because they associated that you really started with iris wants that correct I was the kid yeah I was well actually as he started with South Hamptons center of excellence and I was about trying to think I moved down to London when I was about 9 10 10 10 years of age and then I spent a year or two training with them and then Arsenal watch me play and I think like representative football and sort of smoked my dad on the sidelines asked me to go train with him I was with them for a couple of years and then at 14 was told thanks but no thanks will you play Muirfield yeah yeah I was always I was always I mean up I played at the back and and different positions occasionally but ultimately my position was central midfield and they said thanks but no thanks I mean II said it was too small it's a nice way of telling the 14 year olds not quite good enough so that was that was what happened then and then went back to playing sort of County football and local football and then it was actually frank lampard senior who was watching me so Frank Lampard's dad was on the on the touchline won one game and inviting it's a West Ham to go and train and went to West and played a couple of games in the youth team when I was about 14:15 and that was it ended up signing for Westham my my you did my youth-team at West Ham from 16 so yeah who's Frank Lampard's dad actually was the first one to spot me they have a great Academy what are the players were there at the time well my actual year the only one really that that's Danny Williamson to him but then he will never see it play for Everton as well as one and a half million for Everton from West Ham down curry came through that particular time but we're going a little bit because there was a group that's coming through together says Michael Kent Joe Cole Rio Ferdinand Frank Lampard they were all coming through under the under the radar really so I was probably about three or four years older than them but there's always this talk about Rios coming through Joe Cole they've got these lads who are going to be first team footballers very soon so we were well aware that there's a good group three or four years younger than where we were people were talking about from an early age you paid a lot of Gary fish and a lot of games for Charlton Gary preference over the two clubs I had six years at both yeah and had some great times at both as well I was fortunate enough that I was captain for both in the Premier League finished fifth we reach from seven chart when actually with Charlton we were sort of pushing for chums league football Scott Parker went in in the January he went Chelsea but that season we were pushing hard for European football hips which we were into the last game in the season actually and it still had a chance to qualify for the Champions League so that was that was pretty special as well I it's hard for me to say and I wouldn't want to upset any even set of supporters but I had I'd see very similar clubs actually real community-based good supporters and I'm not going to answer your question I've sat on the fence enough they're your INSCOM pictures action with the Ipswich Jersey I try and change it actually regularly just to try and keep everyone happy is an island Jersey's one way charm on the next Ipswich and then when I when I change it the amount of grief I get honestly I usually look barium red you look better in blue you look better in green is that from Farnborough tone loves is a yeah actually played after season at farmer on loan from West Ham that was a good grounding to be honest it was non-league football against some ex players who Graham Roberts used to be spurs II he put me out for about six weeks one tackle playing against them food but that was that was a real good grounding and she'd really enjoyed my time there yeah well they're all from well European at it which in 1989-90 night old you got collar for around held that call about so I I've made George Burley the inter each manager aware of the fact that I could I you know I wanted to play for iron or could play for Island and I think he spoke to me at the time Mick then came and watch me play a few times and I got a phone call at home when the Missy says it's meet McCarthy on the phone you think you're thinking you're thinking of worse think it's one of the lads messing about course it is yeah right so I went onto the phone yeah one of those and and he said no Smith McCarthy and then I realized it was Mick McCarthy very distinct voice very distinct voices although he's easy I think he's easy to do impressions of advanced infantile taught sport does a brilliant car team you gotta listen to me and and asked me for I want to play didn't hesitate and absolutely yeah he said well we've got be international in three weeks time I get illegal if I want to play perfect and that was it really I played in that be game Ready's books in Sandy and he said I impressed him on the evening and I was in a lot of squads after that so yeah good you know who did you make your debut against and where was it ha ha you do not know or you it was against Macedonia yeah when we drew one all and that was it in terms of the qualifying for 2000 yes we they equal after I'd been on the pitch that 10 15 minutes they equally header from a corner you might remember 94th minute at wherever it was it was one of them I mean one of the lowest points of my Island career and that was my damn use madness really isn't it yeah you don't still have that Jersey hanging up tear it so I've got it I've got it somewhere it's I seen one of the wardrobes it's not it's not one of the it's not one brighter place anyway now yeah the vomit he's got a few goals for Owen as well there was a first goal against that came against Portugal in qualifying that was yeah that was a pretty special moment I was only probably at my seventh or eighth cap though as well and it was obviously such a crucial goal because we were a goal behind in the game and only come on at halftime and the instruction at halftime from Nick was was not to leave the bat for me he said just sit in front the back for you know you you just patrol there and don't really get venture forward anyway when it go behind about ten minutes into that second half and then I pick the ball up and it just opened up for me and I thought well why not have a shot and see what happens and unfortunately it found its way into the back of the net and and then Mick was quite Stern after after the game he came onto the pitch and he was looking a bit angry and said I told you not to leave the back four and then he had a little smile on his face gone too far forward and then you know we haven't come at us with whatever Todd made the tears until world caught my 2002 World Court well what was the atmosphere like in the squad obviously after Roy well man it has been about the roy canyon somewhere you sir lungs um it was a really sad moment was and and one that no one can look back fondly on and you know the fact that you're losing a player of his quality and ability and character you know if if you asked every other international team they could pick one player from our squad who would they pick most of them would have gone well we'll have roy now we had you know we had some real quality with Shane Damien Robbie but a lot of those teams the other managers would have gone will have drawn our team because of what he brings and so for us to lose that was was you know a big blow and actually with regard to what he was saying and the grievances that he had I think a whole squad agreed you know turned up to wasn't brilliant the Bulls weren't there the kit wasn't there all that sort of stuff I think a lot of us are all agreed he was right to be you know upset about that what you have to remember is that the FA I don't quite have as much money as Man United did at the time or do now even and and so nervous will never will never will but Roy was used to having the best we went away from games and he'd get a private jet back from somewhere maybe night laid on and we we were if I were to do that for everyone to go back to their clubs but man United were able to do that so he was used to having the very best so that was that was obviously a massive thing for him what what was probably wrong was the fact that him a maker finger down a conversation in private he's I think it apologized and said it was wrong it wasn't acceptable and then I think Roy obviously doing the article in the paper was probably the wrong thing to do in in hindsight I'll say you probably agree I don't know whether he would or not he's quite stubborn yeah well so so you know I thought it was probably the wrong thing to do Mik brought it up in a meeting it all kicked off clearly and you know Roy we didn't see again Dean Kiley sort of did quite well to sort you know just soften the mood because he saw it stood up and said don't worry said I've played center field a few times if you need someone else to go was like was there like a boat or did he just go that's it I'm leaving or what and that two weeks was obviously a difficult couple of weeks then that to the start of the tournament because there's a lot of pressure then realness because of what had happened there was a lot of stories from back home luckily we were protected from it really where we weren't because we're a long way away from home it's not like now we you've got your phones and you've got instant access to everything we didn't we didn't necessarily get that instant access to what was going on back home so we we weren't really aware of what was going on too much it was it wasn't too bad but there's still a lot of pressure on us going into that first game there was also the talk which camp were you in we mix camp Roy's camp or wherever it might be and so we needed to get off to a good start we didn't play well in that first game you've got to go although well I did yeah halftime because in the build-up to the tournament been talking about having no regrets he'd been saying you know that that's that was our big mansion really and we all pinned up against the wall no regrets no regrets and at halftime that was what he said no that's all we've got is regrets because we were not bad we've been in that first half second half we got the tempo we got we got a bit more on the front foot bit more attacking and I just managed to get forward and and yes and score so that was that was a good moment yeah we are actually Gordon our competition and they're surpassed I think a lot of people's expectations but well realized a lob see was the parachuter against Spain because I we actually thought we were a better saw in the day what did you make it out game yourself yeah I agree I agree I thought with that as well and probably deserve to go through so so yeah that was that was just about the lowest moment you know the Macedonian one was bad but but the missing a penalty was pretty pretty low as well so elysia the bars the step up and take it well there was no sort of designated penalty takers as per se we done penalty debate before in training and sort of practice them and I I placed all my penalties but I'd made my mind up that I wanted to strike the ball I wanted to blast it and that's what I was doing in training the day before and then when it came to it and we were looking around and who's gonna take them it was a case of who felt confident really well yeah I I put my hand up and said yeah I felt I could had a good tournament I've been playing well I felt confidence to take one I made my mind that was gonna blast it the walk up just thinking clean strike clean strike clean strike down the middle it was a clean strike but just to clean really I had too much on it and maybe the adrenaline or whatever it was and got too much on it and that walked that was a long long walk back that says they asses know something in fairness the lads were brilliant I can't speak highly Lyle Quinn straight away with the first one to me I think when I walked back to the halfway line arm around me I actually cooked up taken for the drugs test after the game as well with Robbie Keane and but it seemed waited a couple of hours for us to see Khurana specimen get back on the bus and go back then when I was back at the hotel I just saw collapsed in my room and really just didn't want to go out on in tears and on the phones and I miss season and actually I I just wanted the world to just cave in really and then the door at the door went and it was Kevin Kabam and he'd missed as well and he sort of came in we had a bit of a cry together and but I was I was like okay you know I could feel the seventies but Ken went listen we're going out everyone's going out we had a good tournament come on and I said no I'm fine I'm just going to stay he said absolutely you're coming out we're all in it together no anyone commits a penalty that was it really we had a good night out and ended up back at Michael Flatley the next morning [Laughter] I was actually going a bit emotional then yeah but like obviously you must play long story leukemia your partner in crime you'd almost say for your Irish team and I remember of met him once and I was like so intimidated talk to me once okay Nevel I was like right I'll talk to Gary and then they came back and I was like half because they got myself Ross postponed mind you and I couldn't let that chance go well there well still I claimed a long story Keane like that the most decorated castle in the Prima need ever he's a brilliant player I mean absolutely brilliant player he always had time on the ball you know think about me field players it's always held to scale - it's rushed Roy was just almost serene and and no one seems to be out getting near him some out at times if you if you said what was Roy's greatest strengths in terms of his technical ability you know or was he the best in the Premier League earth maybe long passing shooting head in you might say no it's all of those things yeah but you add them all up what an unbelievable player I'll tell you what he was the best I thought he was the best that in in the Premier League was ability to play a ball 15 20 yards through a me field into a strikers fee if you always look just in the pace that he put he's passing the pace he put on his passage was unbelievable and he drugged ruled that side foot passing to his front and feet the best I've ever seen and actually he tested you all the time you know in training he wanted to test you wanted to test your touch in games he would in training would you make sure your marketing marking him just to bring just to get them see how you could compete well I enjoyed enjoy coming up against the best players really you know the challenge of playing against Roy Keane vieira and people like that that it was always the challenge really for me that's it's what you sort of grew up wanting to be really play at the top level and play against the best so that challenge was always a good one but in training even he would test you though like your touch and things like that and I won game against Cyprus were we were fallen ill up and he passed the ball to me like he did to the front that pace on the ball through over into me I miss controlled it they went on the attack they had a shot che saved it and for two minutes she's chasing around the pitch having a go at me I'm saying Roy will fallen ill up just relax you know it's tough and but then that moment do you think you know that could have been one all in an important game where you give the ball away they go and score you lose it 2-1 and that winning mentality and that drives he's was so fierce that he dragged you along with him if that makes sense you know you didn't worry you you said you're intimidated by you didn't wanna let him down you know you did he thought if I if I make him stay he's gonna have a go at me he's gonna go mad and so you made sure that the next time you've made sure you got over that ball when you you were you know really precise in your touch and because he was so demanding but that's back I mean in a good way because you know he wanted to he wanted to win and I'm competitive I hate losing whatever it is even now with the kids I hate it if I get beat I'm grumpy I hate you know Roy Christ I mean if he lost at anything oh wow yeah the end of the world yeah roughly as well who's the best player you ever played against before around and whose best player you ever played against in the Premier League I mean I always say I always say Roy was a great challenge bat midfield bat midfield actually for United generally pull skulls of some players as well Inman skulls Sentret field I mean well Beckham on the right Giggs on the left and skulls in Canaan in midfield okay skulls are so difficult to get close to as well yeah I mean it's and he ghosted off you as well you know you talk about front lamp by the way he got into the box and got himself gold skulls the same you think they've got him in the next minute he didn't we you know he'd stand around you think ice is fine and then all of a sudden he's gone I think Christ and him and Roy just seemed to have time in that midfield so they were always difficult to play against I think for Ireland do it and when we played we play against Brazil I mean we had some unbelievable games Germany there was some really soft players I did my I did my thing you know a day on Twitter my greatest 11 I played against some of the names honestly I was just looking through it I mean even Italy as well canavaro and people like that say Dorf honestly that steam that we'd be Lansdowne when Jason scored I mean there that's some unbelievable players that day as well so very lost our that goal of me marketeer such a character played up three he's not he's not as he likes to make out he's he plays up to that trigger nickname at times but he's a great carats and good good infectious personalities I'm around and tell nowhere more other person mark Kinsler he's not achieved that much talk about I don't think there you actually replacing my child from as well or when Roy Keane left what did you America my mom we were like right I guess it's also instead of being one of the other well maybe I don't know really I mean yeah mark and I actually gone really well anyway we known each other a few years we'd
