This may surprise you, but the more you focus on winning, the less likely you are to succeed.
I'm a pro fighter who's looking to go 4-0 next weekend.
This is the one thing I see in all high performing athletes,
which is knowing what they can control and what they can't control.
This is something I try to implement a lot, especially when come up to fights,
and it's really driven home in the book The Daily Stoic.
One concept in particular, which I really use, is surrendering to the outcome.
Once I've put all the work into a training camp and I know I can't do any better,
then I just allow my brain to switch off and enjoy the process of competing.
Michael Jordan is one of my favorite athletes to watch coming close to the competition.
This clip I'm about to play is from the last dance and it perfectly sums up my message.
Enjoy.
Most people struggle to be present.
People go and sit in hash rams for 20 years in India, trying to be present.
Do yoga, meditate, trying to get here now.
Most people live in fear because we project the past into the future.
Michael's a mystic.
He was never anywhere else.
His gift was not that he could jump high,
run fast, shoot a basketball.
His gift was that.
He was completely present, and that was the separator.
Big downfall of a lot of players
were otherwise gifted is thinking about failure.
Michael didn't allow what he couldn't control
to get inside his head.
He would say, why would I think about missing a shot
I haven't taken yet?
