You you sort of look back, obviously, you've you've beat Max Holloway 13 years ago and um like he had the whole country in his hand. Like people were walking around getting the McGregor haircuts. Everyone was buying a suit. Everyone was wearing a dickie bow. Like it's it's mad. He he was basically like the David Beckham of Ireland. Do you know what I mean? That's the only comparison that you could put. And then now it it's gotten such little hype. But fair play man, fair play. Well, let's get let's get into it. UFC 229 Balmoral. Been quiet on the on the promotional front for this one, which is strange. UFC has never downplayed a Conor McGregor fight week. Looks like they are doing it this time out. Also Paddy Paddy Pimblett fight week as well. You think two of the biggest stars fighting on same card. You think it'd be a bit more bull about it Balmoral, wouldn't you? >> Yeah, especially there was no UFC over the weekend, so they just could keep pumping it out. Now that there's a lot of like nostalgic videos coming out from Conor and like you you sort of look back. Obviously he beat Max Holloway 13 years ago and um like he had the whole country in his hand. Like people were walking around getting McGregor haircuts. Everyone was buying a suit. Everyone was wearing a dickie bow. Like it's it's mad. He was basically like the David Beckham of Ireland. You know what I mean? That's the only comparison that you could pull. And then now it it's gotten such little hype. It's actually very very strange. >> Yeah, I suppose he's gone from being an idol across the nation and someone who you know, changed the narrative of a nation that like you know, the top sports stars re-looked to emulate to someone there with that you know, people are afraid to bring his name up in conversation. You know what I mean? >> Yeah. That's that's that's that's that's where where it's come to and at the end of the day a lot of it is his own doing. I think you know, there is always that touch of Well, you know, we want to cheer someone on the way up to the top. When they get to the top they you know what I mean? Then people are waiting for your downfall, but I think he actually created his own downfall. And I think you know, the lavish lifestyle, the party antics, the the court cases and trials and stuff like that that seem to be never-ending. Really just rub people up the wrong way and he seems to have lost that fanfare he's had in the nation. Like I can't remember the last time he did media in Ireland. It's been a while. So, like I think that just goes to show where the sentiment for Conor McGregor is in this country right now. >> Yeah, it was crazy cuz like obviously when we start doing the podcast, we started covering mixed martial arts more and like he was the guy, you know, and like the game has moved on without him the last 5 years especially and like the amount of people he's inspired like the amount of fighters we've had in the show that would have started because of Conor and just even some of the sessions you'd have like going to remember we were at UC Dublin when like he won the main event. And then like just staying up and like going to after sessions to watch him fight like it was just uh stuff you'll remember forever. And then now it's just almost like he's not the same guy. >> Yeah, it was really like back in the day where you watching the regular fight? That's the thing like people are having watch parties and stuff like that. Now it's like >> People that didn't even watch fights. >> Mhm. And now you're like right. I'll catch that one in the morning. You know what I mean? >> Yeah. >> So. >> Well, I'm I'm going to be staying up for it. It'll be on around what? 4:00 a.m.? >> I'll probably go to bed and get up for it. Just >> Yeah, man. You you'll stay up all night, man. You'll watch you'll you'll you'll you'll be watching the early prelims all the way up. Like you're like the RTA of on, man. On the Irish Brendan Schaub and you're doing >> [laughter] >> I love him, man. I love him. Um yeah, but I I suppose the actual fight itself is interesting cuz that 170 Max Holloway's never fought at 170. He's obviously come up the weight. He's obviously probably not had the time to put on the weight the proper way either. He's just going to probably not cut weight. Um And look, obviously McGregor's last couple of fights have been at 170. The weight is definitely going to have to favor McGregor cuz he's the bigger guy. He's the thicker guy. He's the more muscular guy. But, Max Holloway's cardio has always been his best asset. And his ability to throw the level of volume of punches that he has. No one's thrown more strikes in the octagon than Max Holloway. I think he's got a thousand more than the next person. So, imagine taking a thousand digs. Well, that's how many Max Holloway has taken or thrown more than I I think Sean Strickland is second. And when you look at it that way, I think if McGregor can't win within two rounds, he doesn't stand a chance, to be honest. >> What type of McGregor do you think needs to walk into the octagon like? Do you think the one that beat Cowboy Cerrone can beat Max Holloway? >> Hard to tell cuz he sort of just blasted through Cowboy straight away. Um like Cowboy would have been knocked out before. I know Max Holloway has been knocked out before, but he's not been knocked out that often. Um I think it's just Topuria is the only person who knocked him out. So, look, is it doable? Yes, obviously anyone can be knocked out, but can he can he catch Max as well? Like Max is very good defensively as well. Um he might be look to be evasive for the first couple of rounds, take the wind out of McGregor's sails, and then go to on the attack. It could be like a two and three It could be like a two and three strategy. Like, right, be evasive for the first two rounds, and then go all out attack from round three onwards. >> It's just more we don't really know what's going on behind the scenes. Like there there hasn't been like the only sort of footage that is coming out is been him training on a beach and like not actually in the gym training. >> Yeah, or you might see like a one-two combo, and that's about it. >> Yeah, Like >> Well, we >> I don't know if 5 years out of the and then come back with all the bounce and pump that you have before. >> But what happened What was the GSP one when he came back and fought Bisping? How long was he out for? >> About 3 years, but like he didn't go out and mad party and and do all sorts of things and have a lot of legal battles against him. >> And the leg break from him. >> Yeah. >> Like that can't be underestimated that leg break. Like no one's ever come back with with an injury like that and been out. >> Absolutely none. >> The best of the best. >> No. Uh I don't know what I think as much as the fight's going to be interesting, I'm very interested to see what sort of media coverage he's going to get, like press conference wise, sit downs before. Like this is the fight week, so this is where all that comes through and will he be able to keep his cool if he's asked questions he doesn't like? Will that get to him? >> He's very good at like pleading the fifth, you know? >> Mhm. >> Like he can be he can just be like he just throws God in there and moves on, you know? >> Mhm. >> It's It's just if anyone can do it, he can as well, like to win. >> [clears throat] >> Yeah, but like I I still think Max Holloway was not a great option for him to pick, like I don't I don't know why he didn't do the Chandler fight. >> Yeah, but like Chandler was after losing again and it was just like I think he wants to beat someone with a with a better name. >> Fair, yeah. Well, also if he lost Chandler Chandler, that wouldn't have been great. >> Well, this is a good test to see what level he's at now, you know? Because if you look at the Poirier fight last time, obviously he had the injury during the fight going in, so but um he didn't look like he had that dog in him anymore. >> Yeah, but he's only got two fights left on his contract as well. >> Yeah. >> So like it'd be interesting to see where he goes where he goes with that. >> Yeah. Like see the way Ronaldo in the World Cup? He didn't score and then everyone was like he's finished, he's finished. If Conor loses quite easily like or >> I said >> If he loses as put it that way. Like if if if it's a bit of a war and he loses a decision, like people won't be like, "Oh, he's finished." But like if he's If he gets finished early in the first half of the fight, I think people will be like, "He's done. He's washed." Like everyone will cuz people people will want to jump on his back. But so many people will want to like like and share and comment and like if he gets a viral knockout and be like, "The king is back." Yeah. So it's literally like both ends of like completely just blow up. Like that's why it's unmissable. It just really really is unmissable and that's why the hype hasn't been great cuz you're actually about to watch like Yeah, he's he's he's trying to enact a redemption arc and people are waiting for his downfall to be cemented. Yeah. And the thing is like he but he is like one of the best entertainers ever. So yeah, no doubt about it. Like at the end of the day, everyone loved the boy. I just don't know if that still brings the audience that it brought before. I know, but in the cage is where he's he's at his best. Yeah. He has been at his best. So we would like we would just want to see is it still there? And I'm sure he'll want to prove it to himself. Like obviously this is where he became No fighter to this day has had you more on the edge of your seat than a Conor McGregor fight. That's just the way it is. Like when you're watching him, you're like every shot counts. Yeah, like it's just it's yeah. It I just I can't wait like I can't wait for it. Like I'm just like what is what are we in store for? Like if you tell me he's going to lose in the first round like by a submission, I could believe that. If you If you tell me If you tell me he he finished in the in the fifth round at the very very end, I could believe it as well. Like I could believe anyone's prediction now but yet that he's going to win or that he's going to lose cuz he he just could do anything. It's going to be It's going to be an interesting thing and then like he still has to make the weight and make the walk. You know what I mean? There's a a lot can happen between now and Saturday night. So, let's let's let's see how it all unfolds and we'll break it all down same place, same time next week, Bas on. >> Yeah, but we'll we'll give a prediction now it just because all the underdogs keep winning. I actually think he's going to win now. >> I think Max Holloway's going to win round three TKO. >> Can't wait to join in this weekend, man. >> Yeah, we'll see how it goes. >> Yeah, we will see how it goes. Ross, obviously Paddy Pimblett is fighting in the co-main event against Benoit Saint Denis. This is a huge fight as well, Ross. >> Yeah, I think it's a winnable fight for Paddy Pimblett. I I hope he does win. I hope he keeps himself in the mix. And I think winner lose, I think he's fighting Ilia Topuria next. They have the beef there. Why not make it? >> That's a really really tough fight for him. Cuz like Benoit Saint Denis is harder than Gaethje. Oh, that's a really tough fight for him. I could see him I could see him subbing subbing Benoit Saint Denis, you know, that's the thing. >> Yeah, I think so. I think he's got a good chance to win. I think him versus Topuria next, no matter what, I think it's the best option. >> Okay. Um just a couple of other fights to tell you about as well on the card. Um just on the main card Cory Sandhagen's taking on Mario Bautista. Also, Brandon Royval is taking on Loïc Cavana from GB Top Team as well. Ross, Loïc has made a big noise since getting into the UFC. >> Yeah, but obviously look at his last outing, he beat Brandon Moreno. So, a win here and he's right there thereabouts in total contention. So, I can't wait to see him. That flyweight division is getting stacked up the top. You also have Pantoja coming back, Joshua Van, Manel Kape, and Loïc Cavana is probably the next man in after those three. Yeah. >> Then also on like the prelim card, you have like Robert Whittaker taking on Nikita Krylov. Gable Steveson is taking on Alisha Ellison. Like he's a heavyweight to watch out for. Cody Garbrandt's on the card, Ross. And then also Luke Rockhold is taking on Caio Borralho. >> That's the man. I'm staying up all night. >> Mate, I told you you're going to be staying up in this. And so like big big night. We'll be keeping you up to date with all the action in the build-up as well cuz like this is This might be the last time he ever fights in the UFC. Um Ross, just before we get into all the other news as well, Ian Garry was obviously in Vicar Street there on Tuesday. We put out some content about it beforehand. He seemed to get a good reception. >> Yeah, he did. There seemed to be quite a lot of fans there. So, hopefully that continues to last. The comment section on the internet was not as kind to him as the fan base uh to him. So, very very interesting to see that dynamic. Um I think it is one of those things where you might read or see what he says online and think like it's a bit much, but then when you meet the guy in person, like he's he's always been a nice cordial guy. So, like I think the more people fans he can meet in person, I think the more people he can turn around. >> Yeah, I'd agree. I'd agree. Yeah, the comment section is never never kind to him. But they're they're saying he's not really Irish. They're not they're not they're not longer saying all the other family you know? >> Well, that's cool. Like I don't know if you got that more or less personal, but it feels less personal. >> Yeah. >> [snorts] >> Right. Then also we were talking about Cage Warriors coming back to Ireland last week. The guess was was it going to go to Belfast or was it going to go to Dublin? And it's been confirmed that September 26th Cage Warriors return to Dublin's RDS Arena for Cage Warriors 210, Ross. Man, this card >> this card The big The big problem with this card huge problem with this card. There's too many fighters to get on the card. >> There's too many fighters. How many fights did you Are you expecting to be on this card, Ross? >> I think they're going to have to do like a very minimum 12. Like I think that's But like I actually think they should try and do 15. To be honest. Um Like when you just look at the fighters who who are going to be like on the card for a start, right? Paddy Pimblett is more than likely going to headline the card. >> Yeah. >> Uh you have Keith Maxwell who didn't fight in the Young Blood card. So they're obviously holding out waiting for this one. Uh Andreas Binder [snorts] after that win, you'd want to roll him out again. And that was That was a huge win. Solomon Simon, Connor McCarthy, Decky Harris, Dean Barry obviously was unfortunate. He didn't get a chance to fight in that card. Um Rhys McKee wants to come back on this card. James Sheehan wants to come back on this card. Alex O'Connell didn't get to fight in that card. Um the two white cards I was seeing he's going to fight in this card as well. Like that's about 10 or 12 fighters. Unless they're going to do a few more Irish versus Irish fights. Or they're like people are going to miss out on this card and they're going to be unhappy. >> Definitely people are going to miss out on this. But like I saw people who were writing in the comment section they want to see like the likes of Corey McLoughlin on it. Um Blaine O'Driscoll will call out Dean Barry. Dean Barry said he wants to fight him. Lewis Byrne want to get back back on it. Gary Rooney >> Yeah. >> Like there's going to be some Irish on Irish fighters going down in this which will also make the event very very big. Uh it'd be interesting to know what fights people really want to see. But like you can only have what five fights in the main card? >> Yeah. >> Give us five fighters that will be on that main card. >> I think Paddy Pimblett is going to Yeah. I think if James Sheehan comes back and he's he's not fighting one of those guys, he's probably on the main card. Andreas Binder could be fighting like could be Binder versus Burlington as a co-main event. That could be for the title. I think okay, there's three names. Uh I think Max Lally uh looks like he's coming on the main main card and probably Keith Keogh, I would say. Yeah, there goes shouts. Also, Solomon King Solomon could be on the main card as well, like return like former champion. But I like what I was saying. I think this event, Cage Warriors 2 10, is the time someone really needs to step up again and be like I'm the the new face. Yeah. Paddy with a win here, he's going to go Binder and and James Sheehan as well. They fight for titles, big win there, they could go as well. So, the big one for the people to let the country know. Yeah, maybe over the coming weeks we'll do a few or or versus other fights we'd like to see on Cage Warriors. Yeah, that's a good show. So, yeah, that's the 26th of September. So, we're going to be looking forward to that as well. Then, Ross over the weekend, Cage Conflict went down. You were the main man You were the main man covering it. Cage War Cage Conflict Summer Slam 18. Let us know what you made of the event, a few names that stood out. And what is one person that left that event and you're like he is he or she is the person that we have to talk about on today's show. Right, well, I'm going to I'm going to start off with someone who I'd never heard of before going into the event and then stole the hearts and minds of the entire nation. Uh this man was called Stephen Gillen from Fight Academy Ireland made his amateur debut at 37 years old. Got knocked down early in the fight and came back with an absolutely ferocious knockout. I've never seen a fighter in their pro amateur debut make as much noise as this guy has. Like he has the likes of like Paddy McCourt was in the comments, Mick Conlan was in the comments. Uh Ryan Curtis was in the comments, Blaine O'Neill. Uh Paddy Gallagher who was fighting on the Cage Warriors card. All in the comments like saying like this guy is the man. So Stephen Gillen is the man. I've never seen someone make their amateur debut, especially at the age of 37, and have the comment section be on absolute fire for them. So uh yeah, you know what they say. We say who's going to make us talk about them on Monday after the event and Stephen Gillen definitely up there. Uh another one for me was Jed Powell. That head kick knockout was absolutely ferocious. Um he'll be next in action on Virtue 6, but Jed Powell he definitely is someone who stole the show. Um some other unbelievable fights in that one there. I think it's Dean Ballard out of uh Team KF. He he won by a I think it was third round TKO finish, but that fight was a serious back and forth. That was the first amateur fight of the night. Very very impressed there. Uh the two girls, Megan Newe and Alicia Newlan, really really good fight. Really really enjoyed that one, really high level. And Ricky De Haroojo and Thomas Carrigan. And a fight of the year contender, unbelievable fight. I love watching it. And uh shout out to Michael Shields. Short notice pro debut for him, went in there, got the job done. Uh he looked really really good. Got the rear naked choke finish to go one and 0. Another man who probably wants to oil up fighting on Cage Warriors Dublin. I think it's going to be an absolute blockbuster card that book Summer Slam really delivered or really impressed it and actually I'm actually even out Sean McDermott as well. He was fantastic. Best probably ever seen him look in cage. Got the got the KO finish up against cage. Unbelievable stuff. By the way, it was actually such a high level event. >> What about John Mitchell as well? >> John Mitchell, he looked like he was an absolute class above in this event than his opponent. You look at his opponent didn't deserve to be in there with him. His opponent I think after the first shot didn't want anything afterwards and I think John Mitchell he needs he just need a massive step up in in competition. It's it's probably very hard for the lads to get someone over to fight fight him on home soil. You know what I mean? He's struggling to get people in Kazakhstan to fight him, so >> [snorts] >> probably not going to be easy to get people in Belfast to fight him either. So look look shout out to Yohan whoever came over, but uh he came over and and took the L graciously. But look John >> For our enjoyment. >> For our enjoyment. [snorts] But look Cage Conflict Summer Slam unbelievable show. Some of the best fights I've seen this year in Irish amateur MMA. Shout out to John Mitchell getting the first round finish. Love to see him go on and do bigger and better things. Morgan Shiels entered the pro ranks unbelievable stuff from him. Got the rear naked choke. Love to see him head on maybe the next Cage Conflict if not beyond one of the Cage Warriors cards. Ricky De Ruso, I don't think he has many fights left in amateur. He's going around collecting the belts. Unbelievable him and Thomas Cardin one of the fights of the year. Jack Paylo take a bow. Massive statement made. Head kick knockout probably knockout of the year in the amateur scene. Sean McDermott making the welterweight from Portadown notice on the amateur scene. Unbelievable by him. I forgot to actually mention this fight was one of the best fights of the night as well. And I know I've said that about a lot of fights, but Carl Herring Joshua Miskim, oh my god, these two lads were incredible. How could I forget? PC commentary, yellow Phil Campbell, Paul Hughes and Pam McCreary were waxing lyrical about how good these guys were. One of the best fights I've seen on amateur MMA. And then Alicia O'Neill Megan O'Neill doing it for for for the girls, really impressive to see. And early on the night as well, Joseph got a lovely TKO finish. So look, unbelievable fights from start to finish. Cage Conflict summer slam, they really did it. >> Shout out to Pat and Shando as well. Then just before we wrap things up as well, we want to give a shout out to Shawn McCormack who was defeated over in Amsterdam at LFL. It was actually a vicious finish, but like he said, he put up a post after saying he's absolutely fine. He's going to be back. And that's good news to hear that he's doing well. >> Yeah, absolutely. >> As well as possible anyway. Shout out to Shawn. So Ross, that was a short and sweet one this week. Obviously next week's next week is going to be pure chaos discussing everything that happens from the UFC 229 >> [laughter] >> and much much more Ross cuz uh I just I don't know what to expect this weekend.
