Will Fleury appears on the Energized Show at Fight-Con in Cork shortly after a first-round win the week before. He talks about nine years living in Cork, training at SBG Ireland for nearly four years, and needing constant forward momentum in his career. He wants a fight before Bellator’s return to Dublin on May 16, 2020, and says his U.S. visa runs out May 31st while Bellator’s legal team recently asked him to resubmit paperwork for a new one. He criticizes Bellator’s double-champion trend, especially Douglas Lima moving up to fight Gegard Mousasi for the vacant middleweight belt, and argues the promotion should push established middleweights like John Salter and Yoel Romero instead. On the Irish scene, he says no other middleweight is making comparable noise, regrets an early-career win over Conor Clarke that prevented a bigger domestic rivalry, and praises SBG’s depth of training partners including John Phillips and visiting heavyweights. He discusses training abroad (Fight Fit Nation in South Africa with Richie Quan), learning from sparring Conor McGregor, and Bellator career goals rather than fame. He expects a Fabian Edwards fight eventually, describes his nicknames and post-fight rituals (same lucky boxers, hotel-bar celebration with Charlie Ward and Tommy Martin), and says he aims to become the first Irishman in the heavier weight classes to win a major belt.

we are here at denim for econ with the best-dressed man in the building there isn't he real [ __ ] flurry whoo was that one of Morgan's Jesus the girls are happy to see it go well well how you doing yeah great - unbelievable beer well your problem the few people who are guests down here who are familiar with the area you've lived in here for a while engine yeah lived in court for nine years loved the place got kicked out of school and Dublin had to come down and finish off my school here stayed for college played better rugby down here when college finished out then moved over London for about two years came back to here lived here for about another year after that and always loved Cork City but you never Satan in one place too long dear no no well I look a big bass number now for what nearly four years so we'll see how that all works out and what I'm happy to wear for the moment and what's your favorite thing about Cork the people genuinely well yeah people are buying on and there's just a bit of craic everywhere you go and people are very open you sent a hairdresser by the time you're finished getting your hair caught you're chopping everybody in there it's just a social place it's cool place like now it is a lovely spot I should be honest yeah yeah and we are down here at PyCon this is a great day out everyone takes money for a lake oh no we're having a look and we'll it's fresh off his win after pedal tour to open their reasoning how are you feeling after that big win yeah obviously it's great to get back to win and it's it was good for like I thought it was a tougher opponent then he was kind of given credit for and he was a big strong lad I was very happy with the way I put him away in the first round he's never going to finish the first round before he's the type of guy who comes in gives the talks and gases I got rid of them before he fully gassed so I was proud of that but like that boys dies off quick man you know I had that fight last week the boss is gone after three days you need the new thing now so it's about get that next thing oh I don't but that's kind of what I'm eager to do now do you think that's really important for you to always have like what's next what's next you know yeah if you're not building towards something you're fading away like so you're either progressing or regressing and like and now we're not stayed of like I don't have a purpose anymore what what am I getting up for in the morning and I need something so I want to get that next one lined up as soon as possible yeah and we just heard today that Bellator is going back to Dublin don't know if I was meant to announce top or air I'll blame Ross but is that like the next event your planet looking forward to or do want to get something in between no I'd love to get something between serve a smile I'll be very disappointed if I don't get something in between so I'm looking about that make hard on them don't be a nice one its naming wise and everything yeah if not there I have the visa I want to go to America as well I want to get my name out over there but the main thing is continuous progression now you know it's about keeping that momentum going to keep wrapping at all so the middleweight division in battle-torn was quite interesting especially with Lima stepping up to fight Mousasi for the vacant belt I think that's my idea to be honest I don't think they need a guy like what we need to do is actually promote our old middleweights more they have a couple of very good middleweights kostas fanciness equality Florida they have your my John Salter over he should be fight for a bout they should be promoting the guys that have been there for a while who've been doing good work get me more for the title it's like okay what if he wins now now you've diminished your own champion and you have a guy who's holding two belts he's not gonna be able to defend them yeah I thought that was an interesting decision to do anyway I thought it was sort of a with the blue be honest no I was like I was like no one went you know or will be raced if they part Mousasi and I thought maybe they might actually just be like you know what Mousasi will fight but no Logan so really you're someone for the belt I was expecting something more on those lines for it was very strange they're like right we'll have another Chomp Chomp because they already have a pit bull I'd like to have two Chomp Chomp which means you have two fellows with four belts and like it's sort of a it's a sexy taint look and hang on a poster yeah boy it's not actually that great as an organization to have is it that significant anymore there are so many job champs now it's kind of lost its glare a bit and all its doing is clogging up divisions and you have these divisions on hold while I go I ask to go down and defend a belt in an order division so I think sooner or later hopefully they realize it's actually gonna hurt them more than it's gonna help emotionally and even a thought local guys at the top appellate or division they're being held up now it the whole thing is kind of just slowing down then like I love a middleweight tournament I think that'll be fantastic idea apart from yourself who do you think the Tom in the weights in Bellator are like John solders up there Costas maecenas is up there with Sassy's obviously doing well hopefully Lovato jr. can get himself sorted out medically and get clearance for that brain tissue Yas he's like I thought he was fantastic in that fight and even that style not really high level jujitsu it'd be very interesting to see how we can deal with that long-term I think he kind of shocked a guy that's all right it looked like a guard wasn't quite prepared you know like he came back throughout the fight was like oh [ __ ] I'm gonna tell fight now I'd like like I would love to have seen that rematch I think would have been really interesting but I'd like to see him for high-level guys again and just see how that jujitsu thought I can do gay guards quite an interesting character really especially he has very similar mannerisms 2/4 Nelson I just when you see him sometimes in the fifth round and you're like being a virgin see now I think that he does look so like chill I'm like he looks like you almost doesn't care yeah no it looks like it does give a [ __ ] and he seems like a boarder North Korea to be honest as in look it's ok doctor go out and [ __ ] try to be a wannabe gangster ever but have something about yourself that's promotable like whereas he's like the anti promotional person like he's like anything who could be addressing about me I'm going to make [ __ ] boring he did sort of like call that a few people before he finished his contract with you see an ID got caught he is really sort of like an anomaly Rhydian like as Barry said before his rack was like a phone number yo man he's fought so many times used over 50 fights from our cult as well and he's yet he's no believable fighter don't get me wrong I'm not trying to [ __ ] on him as a fighter he's an amazing fighter and I think he deserves a lot more respect than he gets but as a personality Jesus Christ how can he be so [ __ ] blonde like you know you gotta put something out there that people are gonna buy into and like every time I try and get behind not quite he just pours the [ __ ] out of him speaking of that now like obviously yourselves like be it's like also yours do you think that like really helps you know in the MMA scene as well yeah it's huge like look I said there's an interview recently we got behind our own better than anyone else and everyone so I thought about being Irish and how it's amazing to be Irish I feel very grateful of the for the fact that I was just born on this island that it's look more dining but because we are a culture that support our own athletes and every [ __ ] sport like it look at soccer local rugby we've shot soccer team we still got as much responsible and like that's our attitude it's a great attitude I had a very harsh on polymer chain here's little edge like you know I want to be somebody that people like I want people to be proud of the fact that I represent Ireland and like it's great to have this support I feel like I have to justify the sport in a way I think it also plays did your favor that I don't know crack you from wrong boy don't think there's no other middleweight from Ireland who's making any noise which is like really makes dr. vision yours yeah which is a pity in a way because I Blair Li like that pig domestic fight where I could beat somebody and I'd be like oh [ __ ] he's the best guy in Ireland it's kind of like I've gone as the best guy in Ireland no challenge nearly and I wish the one like karma clerk and I thought it was a very good fighter I beat him my second fight but because we happen to early in our careers I kind of think he probably would've went three or four and oh I probably would've went three or four no we could have fought then that would have been a much bigger fly domestically what a kind of sealed who the bad guy is yeah it's a pity like I kind of see that not as like a great thing like on the best middleweight Ireland I'm like I wish there was a guy out there to pull it up to me like with without em is a hard point they're training partners of your own size just to the fact there isn't a lot of light heavyweights are heavyweights around either there's more nails Cowboys coming down yeah it's great to have him now John Phillips it's been over for a little oil and even like we've a lot of Eastern European guys in the gym who are big bulky lads and they're good wrestlers and thankfully my SPG is like a hope of talent in Europe you know I mean it's become that place now where everybody wants to go to trade so we get guys coming back for a week or two here and there and like I'm looking like I probably have about 10-12 high-level trainer partners which is more than most guys around Europe you know even like guys come over for a week or two and they're like wow there's a lot of bigger guys here it's not consistent there's like perilous now I was there at John Phillips as no I was there I'm probably the only like full-time in-house big guy but I'm glad to have so many guys who were coming through their doors all the time and would you ever consider going anywhere else and doing better training like abroad just to get new looks or yeah and wherever I go to learn I'll go so like I trained out in South Africa when I did reality show in a gym called fight fibrillation on the Richie Kwan he was an amazing coach man you know just a really different outlook to John I like both their class I look sport like I think Richie kind of focuses much more on you as like this what you need to do this is what you need to do this what you need to do when he nearly has a plan for you every day I kind of liked that structure a short term so I'd love to go back there and try it again even like normal adopted before I wanted me to come over to London shoot again and train there a bit I'm open to it like it look I'm open to going anywhere as long as I can expand myself that by going there who's the best person you've ever trained with every big January I was head not just cause he's here but like he's the most different that I've ever trained went like he said completely differently to anybody else that I've got to lay hands on or you know even like got the cage with he moves so differently the range is so different it's it's a very tricky puzzle to figure out and I never quite figured it out like what exactly did you learn basically but just the way he was moving was so different and even the range and how like he could damage your effectively from a place where you can't touch him so you kind of learn right I have to either learn to bridge this distance or else get my ass whooped yeah but it was when he was about to take on Richie Carly did you not like make you feel more like what went through your head there because obviously he's an SPG you go and then like MPP yeah like what stuff I was like a frame where Richie for a couple of years and I don't quite well so like altima I was kind of hoping nobody got badly hurt that's why you're Charlie yeah you know I knew it she had trouble coming into the fight as well so I was hoping they didn't come out badly damaged and thankfully look I know he got finished in the end but he didn't come out badly damaged and I thought that fight like it was a weird fight it was a weird for the first place and thankfully nobody got badly hurt so we saw that like you're actually getting a push because I saw like yourself Kiefer and shneck happen I went over to Oklahoma to fight and I was like right if you're getting brought up to America that means the mean business then after I win he came back and you lost and now you're back on the winning track again we're just sort of see like don't sway you were sort of the beginning of the card the way did you see yourself getting pushed up to one of the main cards now yeah look I like I thought I'd be a goalie yeah obviously like when I'm falling over on the main card I got a massive reception with fan base I think the Irish fan base know who I am I think they appreciate Who I am I do seem to have a connection with fans here like again I did get intuition to be famous I got into it to win high-level fights I'm writing the most recognizable facial hair in the game well but like from the point of view of getting all prior on cards and stuff like that I want to fight the best guys and I think if you really go out there and you're beat the best guys that's gonna happen regardless it's not something I want to focus on for like oh I think I should be higher on this I want my profile to be bigger yeah sorry to your store no I don't give a [ __ ] I didn't get into this to be famous I got into it to Pete high-level fighters and to admire myself and like that's one thing I kind of wanted to express earlier like this is about beating anybody else it's about being somebody that you like being yeah so to do that and to like justify training all around I have to put myself in challenging situations and that means beating high-level fighters so to do this like to justify my lifestyle I have to go in and beat high-level fighters that makes me like Who I am but the main reason I do this is to like Who I am that's like deep like normally you're just like Ross tuna burger hair gel and I'm like no problem but like for those you don't know thank you store the wheels hair for this morning now that we decided we'd wear like opposite socks so the sock game is very very strong on our behalf what were you doing the socks is born I don't know I feel like yeah okay some novelty socks Barrack Obama it will how long do you have that visa left for America code sake so my visa runs out May 31st but I just got an email a couple of days ago from Bella tours legal team basically asking me to resubmit some paperwork to get my new visa hopefully not to go tonight hopefully means I'll be going back to America later than May but I would like to be booked for something before it I had a few not I mean yeah well how many for acting you're away from getting that coveted belt or toilet shop three hours I wouldn't put an offer on it if I show up and I keep open ass it's gonna come sooner or later so my main thing is get the next void smash that guy doesn't matter what that number is just keep beating the guy in front yet every time it's gonna fall can happen cuz in fairness some people say you swim the fights your net and like are sort of biased towards day or your [ __ ] but like you always go in and have her like a really cool phone I've never been given easy for his band I've never like look peridot is of genuinely never wanted easy fights like I said I want that challenge I like Who I am when I face into that challenge it's don't than sometimes some of the guys I've I'd put like the Norbert white I really want the top Ian for that fight yeah I think Fabien so much easier opponent than Norbert Norbert is guy who I trained with when he was fifteen years old he was a [ __ ] animal then and like look all the way I took two for I cuz I thought I'd whoop his ass well it was still a situation where I wasn't really happy going into it but I was like actually this is a big challenge go put yourself in that situation what was wrong I was wrong going into the fight I knew he was a legit young fella and I knew like emotionally I liked the guy he's a nice kid he's very respectful he's very good person there's no like best-case scenario I will be good young fellas ass and I crossed his career that was the best possible option there so it was a weird fight to approach mentally like and do you think that fade before his you know it's definitely gonna happen at some stage you think it's like yeah there's no way there's no way it won't happen well he wants to come to SVG and train which is a very weird thing so like he's there talking [ __ ] about me calling me out and then he's like oh let's be trying to part in his body [ __ ] off you know like no it's just was weird so like I don't like I don't see why he wants to come train and now he's talking [ __ ] about the fight I feel like sooner or later it has to happen there's been fired too much [ __ ] talk and he's got like hopefully he can win this next fight I think Austin is a pretty good fighter I'd be surprised if a bit more left to be honest but if you can win it I can get a couple of victories under my belt that's why it has to happen sooner or later and he's fought numerous times a dolmen as well yeah exactly like I think that's make I fight for stop ah look that's that main event or a comb an event like like they've missed an opportunity not creating not fight theatre yeah I like you got that for you and then one that that then yeah and you're talking that's right those massive things for my career and that's why I wanted so badly let me ask you a question about the nickname right because I feel like your amount of many nicknames now like really see you want to be will [ __ ] flurry or they can't say that on TV I got well afferent flurried last yeah I thought that work why why I've heard like you know you're obviously the wrong bastard as well which you also can't say on TV and I was like I feel like the PG name for the kids it's like all the lawyer Tipperary that's that's our well we just which is your favorite which want to go it well I'll have a backstory like so will [ __ ] flurries one of his calls since I was about 16 and I was playing rugby and I used to have from blind everybody around me and I mean like where the [ __ ] is well [ __ ] up Lori then the Royal bastard thing it was as soon as I came to SPG John burned started just calling me at the raw bastard where's the robots a lot like yeah I think the robots is probably sums me all best to be honest like the old the description of will flirt lion in Tipperary comes from Africa when I was doing the reality show down there and a guy yeah Brendan was his name he was South African guy and I was going to train and fight fibrillation Richie Quan Jim and he was like mate there are [ __ ] lions there I was like yeah don't [ __ ] worry I'm the line of temporary I'm gonna go in a splash these cuts and I just like that day and then I was like the lion a for contemporary baby I thought it wouldn't look at the monster Mahler's the one yeah but you already have seven nicknames in there last September I dunno if I didn't notice but I used the bear from care because I'm from care a small town in South temporary but a lot of people thought I was the bear from Claire and I was like arthritis and temporary I was like no I'm [ __ ] temporary it's care CAH i or oh yeah I teach with McDonald's and cares well we drove Boyd on the way and come here one thing you're also very famous for is that those forty boxers so they the same boxers every for you yeah adaiah favorite toy I put them in a little drawer and I keep them for the fights so you're only where the wins all right someone boy will for your new pair of temporary boxers really this is harsh lads I'm not expecting to be called out on my box of usage it's a paradox too many times every way and it's just like it like you're always with your brain flag and crack to see because then after you shake I'll bring an energy to that situation because ultimately like there's a lot of emotion going into this and I think like people try and downplay it and try it like I'll put my head down and nobody will notice me it's [ __ ] man you're gonna get out there and you're gonna get exposed in front of 10,000 people go in and be emotional be what you are be what you've worked to be I'm like I love getting out there got pumped up and pump the crowd up like in Ferris it is incredible to see you bring that energy because even not like the weigh-ins when there's public not there like with flurries let know his loins roll like that's how I feel at that point that's how I feel at that time on [ __ ] ready it's like it's war time let's go was it what did you do to celebrate your last fight let's just calm piss yeah it's great craic we went back to the hotel bar and myself Charlie Ward and Tommy Martin there and a few other people just had a couple of drinks and sat around then I met Justin by moment we sat down had a few drinks and it's really nice night I like it's a beautiful thing fighting in your hometown when you win and you can get over a balk and have your family and your friends around you and just celebrate and have that period where you're like relaxed and the war is over you know you've defeated the opponent the war like it's all gone now and it's just time to relax to celebrate do you ever go to meal after your for anything that you're like this this world I love to eat after after at the big win like the next week or two yeah sports obviously but like I'll [ __ ] love burritos in quesadillas so like over the next week or two I'm just gonna plow it to a couple of good parade I was like no well I'm just I'm just gonna stop here now obviously there's a fight in the May card but then obviously better to London what's your next event that your plan enforcement what time I'd love that baked art I think that works out perfectly I think it's about 110 12 weeks to last May 16 May 16 so it's like yeah ten twelve weeks away I'm not sure exactly but it like that would work perfectly timing wise for me anyway brilliant we we love seeing if I we love when you have a foreign ounce we know follow your journey we can't wait for you know I'll have another world champion both I think our lives missing a world champion at the moment and there's a few people who are sort of chasing that road to gold moment do you think you'll be the first one to captured or do you think some we get there before you I'm definitely gonna be the first guy in the heavier weight classes to win a belt in Ireland like there's unfortunately it is quite a small pool I would prefer if it was bigger but yeah like it's not again about me versus any other Irish person I got about it's about why journey again they're unlike my journey of going in and [ __ ] put myself out there again again again again and doing it to them like all you can be is the best version of yourself sounds like absolute bollocks but it's reality if you push yourself to be the best version of you every [ __ ] day good shits gonna happen and if you're honest about that effort yeah where can it go so I'm excited as [ __ ] to get on that journey to like keep being the best version of myself well you're a much deeper character I would say than people realize you have such a good like outlook and philosophy on your fighting career on your life you know what you're actually just a lovely boy every time every time all you see it like it's always such a warm welcome reception and I feel like you're like that what everyone I don't think anyone has worn bad word say about Wilfred I'm sure you can find someone maybe those guys who uses you cakes before like all of my thoughts Airport at will times minion what's this round of applause for yourself hey thanks for coming on shelters and stay energized thank you
