Energized Show countdown ahead of Cage Fight Series 10 in Austria, with SBG Charlestown head coach Owen Roddy and fighter Andreeas Binder (“The Judoka”). Binder discusses moving from Galway to Navan to train full time at SBG after months of commuting, his improved composure and striking, and his upcoming bout against UFC veteran Rostom Akman on UFC Fight Pass the same night as UFC 273. He is on a four-or-five-fight win streak, is 25 and believes he will peak around 26, and says his goal is the UFC—possibly after another two or three regional fights—with a title shot at Cage Fight Series in mind if he wins. Roddy praises Binder’s all-range skill, calmer fight approach, and near-readiness for the UFC under big lights, while reflecting on nine years since Conor McGregor’s UFC debut and his own growth as a more complete MMA coach. They highlight Ireland’s rising regional scene (Cage Warriors, UAE Warriors, BRAVE), Will Fleury’s recent Cage Warriors middleweight title, and SBG prospects including Jared Harris, Sarah Elliott, Aiden O’Boyle, Alex Fagan, and Jazz after strong amateur weekends.

[Music] [Applause] okay what's going on guys welcome to a brand new episode of energize ross introduce the guest smack today we have the head coach of sbg charlestown irish legend own body under judoka who fights a cage fight series 11 over in austria this weekend it's the judoka andre has been there lads how are you doing how are you doing that's are you keeping welcome i'm good as always lads thanks for having me on these boats no worries it had to be dawn you know i mean big fights uh neat big show so we had to make sure we got the two years on uh oh and i'm gonna start with yourself what's it like being uh to have andreas in in the gym now since he's arrived over from galway and uh was there much of a cultural change now coming from galway and you know come up to the big smoke i know honestly it's been great um it's a great asset for the team and a great walk ethic that's i think that's the big thing um shows up puts the effort in and and you know you see the results in in his voice you know and so he's it's been great having him on board working on a few things just trying to tidy up a few things and then and get back at a big point this weekend so we're ready to go and then andreas uh obviously there's some elite bodies down in spg charlestown and some elite amateurs some good pros there as well you know i mean what's one thing that you found that's really come on your game since you moved spg charlestown um it's just not rushing into into uh looking for like head hunting should i say the finish will come if the finish is there john i mean i just i'm more calculating calm now instead of head hunting and going for that finish uh a finish can come from anywhere really like but uh i developed my game in every aspect my striking has been going up leaps and bounds and just being more calm and controlled i suppose yeah i did see that you took that k1 fight there recently and uh blast superman uh on as a lead striker yourself that must be a proud moment for you yeah yeah like andreas is everywhere and but at his composure you know um at the higher levels of uh in the program it's it's your composure and your tournament that's that's what gets you the big finishes you know um and andreas especially when we look back on the the jaundice employee he he was like a lunatic in there and i was like say take your time you know fight simple fight safe okay and and take the foot where it needs to go to get to win and so i think i lost a few years in my life after that for you but let me in all the spars um and i think he's um he's uh he's been a lot calmer and i think he'll be calm and calculated in this point as well um and we'll get a a nice finish andreas obviously this time out it's uh rostom akman um ufc veteran uh he he had two shot fights in the big show and he then fought in gary and cage warriors now he has to fight yourself this man's obviously a tough man and he obviously takes on all comers you know i mean you just have to look the names on his resume what do you think he can bring to the table look we're ready for him whatever he brings like i'm ready in the grappling department i'm ready in the striking department um i'm obviously going i respect everyone that i get inside the cage because uh obviously he got to the highest level with six finishes so i know he's a tough lad but uh i just think my my skill set will be too much for him and address like looking at your career now you're obviously out you're on a four or five win streak uh hopefully you make a five five five win streak this weekend like where do you want to push your career to well look everyone wants to get that pinnacle moment of the ufc like so that's my dream that's my goal right there but look i'm taking as each fight comes you know what i mean look i look at this fight we put a beautiful performance and then we we reassess we analyze this fight and then we go further from there i'll be talking to owen and paul and we go from there then so i'm ready for everything really i know and what about yourself like coaching andreas now for like this would be your second fight coaching uh the jadoka like what are you what do you what do you see in address and like how far do you think he can go with his career i think he's got a a very good skill to he's he's very very skilled in all ranges and you know you have to be good everywhere and you have to be able to finish everywhere um and you know looking at andres he's got those skills um now that he's a little bit more calculated and it's just about taking those opportunities and in the fight and even before the foot like you know fighting and point this guy it's a big fight big name but you have to be willing to take these risks and um you know on the other side of that is where all the all the reward is when andreas goes in and puts on a a clean performance and gets the finish and then we go on to the next one and and and keep winning until until we get the knock uh get get get the call off the ufc and then take it from there um it's just another another for you and andreas against a tough opponent but andres has the skill set he has the pace um to break his opponent down and get the win and then you know once we do that we look at who's next yeah it was also announced today that it's been nine years since conor actually made his ufc debut yeah from you coaching nine years ago to today like how much have you progressed or what is something that like that was that you look back at nine years ago being like well i've really improved in this this aspect of the game yeah i think you've improved as a as um mma coach overall like you know you can't be yeah i'm you know i'm known for my my striking um well you know you need to be now you need to know how to defend takedowns in order to keep a stand and i always say to my guys if you want to be a striker you're going to spend 70 percent of the time defending takedowns in order to get that 20 where you get to walk and do your you know you do your striking and and that's the case for strikers but i think i'm i'm definitely developing as a as a a complete mixed martial arts coach um in regards to the grappling and regards to wrestling and the ground game so yeah i just you know just getting a bit more confident in in my ability you know young and back nine years ago it was young and raw at the sales point and and stuff now i've i've settled into a coaching role and and i'm enjoying it with that coaching role already do you do you still get a round in the gym off the lads i don't know sometimes i'm getting a bit on now so i don't get in as often as i should um but um i do get in and do a little bit every now and then you know a little bit of grappling hop by getting inspired and and i'll put the pressure on for all of a few minutes and then i'll well i'll step back and i'll pretend to coach a little bit when i'm when i'm trying to recover you know that's obscure fun to get in the middle around and and uh you know figure out some positions and stuff um there's no better way to to get better at a position than to get in and move around a little bit with them and andreas like what made you choose to go to spg charlestown as well because for people that don't know you came from galway to dublin ross mentioned earlier like it's it's a feral distance yeah so that's i was you see the way i work in andy i was working i was working uh four days and i was traveling up to dublin then after work on the tuesday and i'll go back down to golly then on friday night so i can be back into work at 6 00 am for saturday so uh you know what it was i was just getting sick and tired of driving up and down and we were looking for rent and all that stuff and it was just so expensive in dublin so i ended up moving to navin and i'd rather drive 20 minutes every single day for two train and be there six seven days a week then do not i mean then just be there three four days it was tough five about four and a half months five months driving up and down i was just sick of it and um i i chose spg really charizard ryan ryan hanley was in there um he was living up in dublin while he was working and he was like man you should come up here for some rounds and this and that because it's class and i was like [ __ ] why not i'll come open and do it i went in there man and i just felt like you know you just feel that click uh all the lads were like literally 100 um like they're all so sound to me going in and they were like show me little tricks and this and it just created a little bond and it made you so just so much easier the way owen was there and then paul fogley from one in management he was a look just give it a try and see if you like it and i just fell in love with the globe and look the rest it's uh it's history like you know the face of the aldi supermarket came basma he really is he really is that's why you have to make sure to check out andreas being there this is saturday on cage five series 10 live on uc bypass isn't going to be a missible night same night as uc 273 as well ross yeah so you can catch it andreas bender before the prelims kick off there which is a an unbelievable kickoff to the ufc prelims on that hopefully that will bring a few extra oils to yourself andreas as well uh andreas how ready do you feel for that call up is this another litmus test for you and do you feel like you know i know you've struggled over the last year to actually book yourselves in a fight you know the other's regional scene is a bit slow a bit small when it comes to just their pros so how many more fights do you want to have before you get that call up look oh knows best how many fights i need left to get there john i mean i'm i'm in no rush i'm only 25 years of age i'm only going to be hitting my peak at 26. so what i'll take whatever fight it comes you know what i mean like one look maybe another two three fights but yet again everything can change you know so i'll take a fight as each fight comes and what about your cell phone when are you comfortable for him to him to get the call or are you taking it one fight at a time yeah no you know it's not really a bill it's not really about when you get the call i mean if you have to call tomorrow you take it because you're not going to turn it down um but it's about composure it's a bill you know being comfortable in there and nothing and not being reckless you know you know he's a professional if you fly professionally um you know then he's ready and um i definitely think he he's almost there okay he has the skill set without a doubt but it's not only the skills that you need it's a you know to perform under the under those big lights you need to be composed and you you need to be patient and be able to be able to take the risk at the right time and um yeah andres is is getting there and very close and i think i think um once we get the call he'll be more than ready we mentioned that like the way ufc fire passes are taking over like our promoting certain companies like cage fight series cage warriors uae warriors there's like plenty options loads of irish guys are doing amazing stuff on the scene as well like will fleury uh just won the middleweight title like the last over cage warriors they're doing brilliant things and now like yourself andreas like with a big win here on saturday you could then go for the toilet fight oh yeah that's that's definitely in my mind already like you know um like i said rossum is a big name um he fought at the highest level and then with a beautiful performance in this i could challenge for that belt and why not have having have a avatar in the european show i collected all the the pro tiles in the regional shows might as well try and expand into europe you know and look look at us now like the irish are absolutely buzzing with uae brave um everything like you know we're getting world champions every day so you see the sport is growing and the iowa it's like that's saying dollars take over you know yeah there must be something all right at the do you saw industries as well ross yeah it must be something most of them know i heard you even tried to wrestle jerry harris's belt when he came back from cage conflict um could you let the people tuning in now as well like what other fighters do you have in the team that people definitely have to keep an eye out on in the future as well we mentioned yeah we mentioned jared harris like if you want to go into detail about chair and other fighters yeah does it now i've you know we've got mostly amateurs now and but obviously jazz is done very well in his pro debut then we've got sarah elliott we've got aideno boyle alex fagan um like we've got really really good young crew coming through and it's about getting them the experience it's great to see all the original shows coming back and ready and also with the orange maps and stuff like that so of a young team but uh they're committed and they're working hard and just keep their eyes out for them because they're you know last week with a great great weekend um with a three hour four and then we'd also got conor mcgregor so almost four or five lads winning and getting in and and and showcasing complete games that's that's a big one and showcasing good skills on the ground good skills on the knee good wrestling up against the cage so yeah i'm excited about the team and uh yeah just keep watching this space at the boats and then also shout out to barry's favorite butcher as well yeah mr larry max larry shadow max no i i absolutely love it um oh i want to be uh terrible not to ask you on the nine year anniversary of uh the conor's debut when would lloyd see conor back and who's like to see him in there against whoa um well i i say the same thing um it doesn't matter when connor comes back i'd love to see him back whenever because i think he you know one he loves he loves competing he loves mma and i still think that sport needs him i think he needs the sport because um yeah you know he's at his best when he's competing i'm gonna be training for free um who would i like to see him for you i need to be honest anyone you know i don't really care um because at the end of the day and it doesn't matter who kind of fights all that matters is you getting the opportunity to fly connor because he's he's still the acer um so you know i would like to see him point i need him and i'd love to see him back as soon as possible um i know he's boxing he's boxing my uh raj and i woke up moving around a little clip of him moving around so he's moving around a lot better on the foot um at the moment um but it needs to be tested and stuff like that so it's hard to know when but i'd love to see him back eggs up and i'd love to see him for you any of them and all no i haven't tasted this i've been out there feeling this top of the range the place you know everything he touches towards the goals i have to give it to him and replace the top of the range to grub the business to stop the top of the ranch for when i went over he only went up a field i wasn't drinking so i'd have to go over and let me head down there soon enough maybe maybe myself and andres i go over after the win and we'll have a few points i'm honestly convinced they're holding nate diaz back from they won't give him a fight until the caller's back ready and they run that back because that's that will go down in history as the greatest trilogy of all time in all combat sports without a doubt that would be a cracker that would be a cracker yeah andreas would you when you hear uh of the tales of conor mcgregor and i'm sure uh owen has a one every now and then in the gym does that make you you excited that like he's still knocking around and someday you could be on a ufc card with him at some stage yeah man of course like growing up like that's who got me into into the mma and watching ufc and all that like you know what i mean i remember a couple of years ago what was it about when did he fight cyber or sorry yeah he thought no i think yeah when he made his debut i remember i stayed up and i was oh i want to do that one day do you know what i mean like it was just looking at that it's just i'm driving every single day to get better than i was yesterday and just keep on going really like and one of one of these days i know they'll be knocking and i'll take the opportunity you know oh doesn't it crazy to think that andres is sitting there in his gaffe and you made that walk with connor for each one of his fights and now at some stage you might make that walk with him yeah no it's great you know that's what that's what every young foyer destroys to do they strive to get to that ufc and they walk and you know you play your cards right you go in you dedicate your life to the sport you do your best and you take those tactical risks in there and and if you're lucky you get to go you get to ufc andreas is on the doorstep without it help and i'm very confident that he will make that walk and uh you know we'll enjoy it as much as we do this point this weekend in which we enjoyed our last one you know the um the goals don't change you know you go in you come up with your strategy for the opponent and whether it's whether it's uh on a local show or whether it's on the biggest show in the world we're gonna do the same stuff oh and can you believe it can you believe the evolution the irishman may seem like after going so many shows like ourselves ross we just seen it just explode like the popularity of his mask is massive myself and rusk i saw into the uc from it as well can you believe that it was after happening over the last nine years well you know what it didn't really come out with nowhere there's something in the blood over here there's talent you know we we now have to fight um you know yeah it wasn't just conor yeah kind of come he's a super fan global super star and he did amazing things um and maybe maybe he gave us all that little bit of belief but there's so there's some serious talent there and and the and the skill sets from all the younger for is it's getting even better like i'm looking at the amateurs now and i'm like they would have went through when he deposed back in the day yeah yeah it's it's it's unbelievable um it's a testament to the work ethic from from most of the uh the athletes testament to the coaching and and you know the belief and and that the work ethic that they the the guys put in um you know we're in there you know you're seeing in the oil maps as well like and for such a small country and we're always up there what are we there there abouts you know man and i think with a couple of adjustments in regards to you know correcting uh uh our wrestling and and stuff like that and getting better but uh where with our with our wrestling game i think we're gonna be there there to vote again you know exactly andreas let me give you the final word bud um like how do you get the job done this saturday uh cage five series 10 live on uc fly pass it's going to be a finish voice you know what i mean i'm i'm ready for everywhere like it's if it's going to be a knockout submission but like i said it's going to be cool calm and collected if it goes three round decision i'm going to bring the win do you know what i mean but it's everyone's like i'm going to go in there for a finish regardless what it is andreas it it was great to have yourself uh and coach owen roddy on um two absolute legends and roy's uh we wish you all the very very best we've been backing you from day one and we're gonna continue to do so and you're an absolute gentleman uh oh as always irish legend um what a duo what a dynamic to you and there we have in the sports you youtube guys so i can definitely see you guys going all the way to the top and then who knows me and barry might be sitting there ringside as you make that walk together in the ufc uh we'll be cheering you on so uh yeah we'll be the guys wearing the super glasses don't worry we got more made except that they sent us the wrong flag we could do every house flag and have to throw them all in the bin we'll definitely get some but uh guys if you are watching this on youtube make sure to like share subscribe and hit
