"Coach Kew" Nathathorn Dhammapiyanan, coach of the Thai national MMA team, opens up about the readiness of the Thai MMA team. They have been preparing for a long time since the SEA Games ended, and admits the national team is at a mid-level in Asia because MMA is still new for Thai people. This time, Am is considered the hope of the Thai team at the Asian Games, but he does not want to put too much pressure on the athletes. Right now he is more concerned about conditions in Japan, which could affect the athletes.

On readiness right now, the athletes are definitely ready because we have been preparing since — actually, our sport, MMA, Wisak Chana. We have been preparing since the SEA Games ended; after the SEA Games we prepared for a long time. Our qualification cycle has been ongoing — we Qualified twice, at the start of the year and then mid-year, so we have had to stay fully ready all the time. How do you see the peak of Thai MMA compared with the Asian level we are going to? From what you have, how do you see where we stand? If I look at it, I would put us at a mid-level — not really top yet, somewhere in the middle — because MMA is a new sport in our country. Many countries have been into it for years before us, especially Japan; Japanese MMA is almost the originator, and they are among the top in the sports world. But for us, there are actually a lot of people doing MMA, but because they may not know it yet, they have not come to pay attention to this sport. Now that national- and world-level competition is coming in, they are starting to pay much more attention. Many on the MMA team recently went to Kanphum, or little Af — the overall picture is like that. Am is really the hope of the national team because of Am's potential and past results from the SEA Games, SEA Games, Chic Chai Mesia, Chic Chai Mesia again in another event, and then the Asian Games, so there is hope, but I do not want Am to put too much pressure on himself. Every day he tries to train and tries to get the athletes as relaxed as possible — I do not want him to carry the weight of results, medals, standing out; I want him to focus on doing his job, on performance and competing technically. This morning, what are you still worried about in terms of the athletes' technical competition? Not directly on the athletes — if you ask what I am worried about now, if the athletes are not worried, I am more worried about the environment, the surroundings. Anyone can say there is rain or whatever; I am more afraid of illness or injury for the athletes. I would like to ask Thai people for support — give encouragement to the MMA athletes. This is the first time for the Thai national MMA team, and the first time at the Asian Games. They will try to do their best. Thank you very much. Thank you.
