Fansview MMA host Dave interviews Your Fighting Championship welterweight champion Paul Buckley ahead of a title defense against Shane. Buckley (7-2 amateur, MMA Cork) discusses fight-week prep, his move from middleweight to 77 kg for pro ambitions, and not looking past Shane despite planning a pro debut before the end of 2023. He praises Shane and past opponent Jess as awkward, high-level strikers whose records understate them, recalls beating Jess in his first fight at 77 kg, and explains he had trained for five-round fights until reading the YFC contract roughly one to two weeks before the interview. Buckley reflects on MMA Cork’s rising roster under John Mitchell, Jack Aaron, and Aaron, the gym’s history of top Irish amateurs, and the depth of youth talent including Louise Brody. He recounts starting MMA after his younger brother began training, a roughly two-year layoff around 2018, rugby background at about 93–94 kg, and IMMAF experience at middleweight—including daily weigh-ins, multiple bouts in a week, fighting Fergus Jenkins, and later training with Jenkins after an Instagram message. He shares views on nerves, amateur records, show-day environment versus gym sparring, and why consistency at MMA Cork matters more than facilities.

okay so I'm here today with an amateur fighter of a 7-2 record he's the welterweight champion in your Fighting Championship he fights out of MMA cork he's been to the IMs he's got a wealth of experience so uh we're going to talk about his upcoming fight and then just a little bit uh about his career today so thank you so much for joining me you just finished training how was training today very good thanks for having me as well Dave uh last kind of tough session so All Good Feeling Good Man perfect so what does fight week look like for you obviously he said that's the last susception tough session what does fight week entail for you then well like for the day before wins like most of us just like folks on the way kind of relax rest off just get the head right like for the fight itself from there after today it's just resting doing the water lord and doing the rest of the work and I don't have much to lose myself feeling good now yeah and obviously this is at welterweight that's where you hold the belt um you you want to obviously previously on your Fighting Championship but before that you were middleweight so I would presume you've come down to welterweight um how was the transition well like for Middle Ages I was cutting like a little from Norway like I walked around probably 87 Max 88 so like 77 is definitely like what I should be doing and like looking forward for Pro so I say there's no way I could do middle April like people are coming along to it like you know they could be 93 94 or something like that so I think 77 is definitely depending where I'm at now yeah but and I like the way you've done it because I think when you first start fighting this is just my belief I've never thought that if you when you first fight just fight it kind of like I said you walk around wait kind of not cutting too much just to focus on your skills is that something obviously you planned or at the start yeah then like like I used to be like I came from rugby first I was about like 93 94 playing rugby carry an extra way so like when we switched over I thought it was going to be doing 84 until like you couldn't see some other people doing 84 then you're kind of like look Matt like size myself up against others like it kind of has to be 77 but it was definitely good at the stair just focus on like the fight not the way but like for coming into pronoun I kind of want to guess the way it talked about amateur so like I'm ready for protein yeah because the the way the wake up can be dependent on how it's approached it's not always an easy task and that's not something you want to do going into your pro debut or something so this is the end I would assume this is the end of your amateur career coming up fairly soon I'd say yeah like I don't want to look past like you know any fight like every fight as big as the last and like I wouldn't underestimate anybody so especially like point for titles and stuff it's all a good opponent so hopefully before the end of the year but like I said you know I'm just looking at each fight like not looking past the next fight just before the end of the year it's kind of want to get the pro debut on I think perfect so you don't want to like put it off because like you know you're keeping it off forever but like waiting for a perfect time but there's no perfect time so I just want to kind of get it stacked at the ball rolling sooner like riding later yeah I understand and I like the way you're focused on any every opponent as they come because obviously you're facing shape um and we spoke about I spoke about this before I think his record doesn't show actually the level that he's at he's a very good Striker he comes out a very good team how when you look at Shea have you watched much tape on them do you do much study of your opponents like I watch the bass like you said if you don't understand anybody and he's like way better than what his record shows but yeah watch the people at the same time I don't want to look too much into it especially if amateur because someone could be like completely different in one fight to the next like most of us probably have like you know 15 fights or less so you can still change so almost one point to the other so like you could look at someone and be like oh maybe this wrestling's not that good he could have corrected that since the last fight so I'm going in there like expecting them to be shop everywhere boss you know obviously you're just gonna like I do the same I'll join prove every fight as well so I just want to be kind of sharper better rather Focus too much I'm trying to beat him you know like absolutely like you have to take a look at certain stuff like you don't want to go in there blowing but um kill folks tomorrow and stuff trying to get my own game going kind of yeah because if you worry too much about what they're gonna do that might stop like stifle your style what you want to do obviously like take the basics till they have a good job to do they show a high kick but like that just go in and Implement your own game as an amateur so once you go pro you kind of got your style sorted out so you're gonna be fighting for the belt obviously you want it again you fought a lot of the top guys um obviously you beat Jess who was like he's top he's in the top in the the welterweights as well that was very very interesting fight how did you find that fight because Jess is like I don't know how many I've made lightweight but um oh like I said to him before like I said to him after for you I was like I knew he was tall I never really seen a mosh in person before the fight so like I was like okay he's about what six four I was like he's six four five seven seven he's going to be skinny first time I kind of saw him properly was in the cage and we came across each other and I was like first he went to my head is like he's getting our skin he's like you know what I mean so um he's really strong way like stronger than I thought obviously like he's good and he's just like he's such a such a like awkward going to fight as well you know some of the positions you kind of end up in you know you're kind of like what the hell is this you know what I mean on the ground and then on the feet like obviously like he's he's kind of long he's range he he's so poor like so it's all kind of like awkward stuff again but like it was good it was my first time doing the the before away in 77 so like I also kind of felt like a bit like sluggish in there I think I don't know if it was from like I didn't really refuel well or um if it was for me to wake up and stuff but like yeah he's very good he's strong like he's good everywhere so that's what I'm saying like Shane's probably going to be the same like it's one of his main training Partners so you know like Jess's Taco fighting tacos all the time even Shane like you were saying like yeah he's a few losses but they're also against kind of Taco he's like so Liam Connor Liam like a wealthy fall like other guys that like you know so and he's going the distance like against some of them so you know he's definitely somewhere not to be looked fast yeah no 100 and then obviously you're on your Fighting Championship I believe this might be your four-time honor um how would you find it as a promotion obviously I find it very good they're always very good to me and the matching seems to be spot on all the time obviously you like that show if you've gone back quite a bit Yeah like deck is they saw a good dealer like obviously like he's he's a fighter like so he knows like kind of how bad the can be with some shows and stuff like that even though most like all the other shows are quite cool to be fair but all you wear is good sticky sounds there's no kind of it's just about like getting good matches good fights and like you look at every card like it's they're all class it's really well matched and things like that like so and it's good like one good thing about it is like he gets like a lot of people from the north as well you know what I mean so like it's a good mix to avoid it's like from all over and then like all high level guys I don't have the profits mixed in as well like it's just good show well run and like he just cuts out a lot of the kind of stuff around it then as well I would have liked it On the five trees though like that's a big reason we wanted to come back on I was like Oh I thought it's like treason so two weeks ago I only read the contract then starting on Titan fights tree trees So like um I kind of wanted to try that and I was training the whole Camp up until about a week and a half two weeks ago like it's going to be 40 rounds so be ready for that until like I kind of red contract and there's like Arch retreat but I understand like Joe he wants to do with his own but like if you can't get clear can't get sanctions you can't do it so yeah it would have been good to get there like that that would have been good experience going to the Pro I know he had one on the last card as well um so whatever happened that you can't get this time or well look it's gonna be title fight also there's a couple of your teammates on this card and all fear definitely is on I can't remember exactly you guys but how does it feel when you're gone yeah yeah so how does it feel when you've actually got more than just yourself going on to a card like what's the pose like in the gym it's cool it's really good like obviously it's bad like the more people you kind of have folks on the same thing the more you're kind of on the same page they're all getting ready for like um sometimes if you're like the only one you're kind of like it's hard to guess everyone wants some training hard ritual and stuff but like if you're like if there's a few on it there's a kind of better buzz going and stuff like that I am obviously focusing on like um my own fighting stuff is that because sometimes it's kind of hard you'll be watching therefore it's you know on the same code and kind of like whether they go like well or not you're kind of it could like freak you out or get you going the same way like you know what I mean but like obviously the main focus on my own but like it's definitely good to have more people focusing on the same thing I'm just getting everybody on training like the more people training kind of Faith the better because like when people are in camps they're like that much sharp or that much more hungry and everyone kind of feeds off that then like so it's good I bought it I'm like in looking forward to that voice that's too too good fights for them is that yeah and all it is very two very good fights and obviously you come from MMA cork you look at John Mitchell what he's doing now um there's like a generation of you now at the minute like you've got yourself you've got Liam uh you've got Brian you've got Johnny uh you've got Barry like there's a good view he's coming to the Forefront now um what's it like being in that chairman how much do you look up to John Mitchell for what he's achieved so far good like I like I knew him for years like even before I was doing um like he's like his mentality's class as well like he's just super like you're obsessed doing everything like you know like his biggest problem is probably almost doing too much sometimes you know what I mean trying to do like you know mad sessions three times a day but like that kind of gets you doing the same and stuff like that because like you know if one person's doing a kind of leading the way like everyone else kind of follows and like obviously like the people you mentioned but there's loads more coming up late you know some gyms are so hard to find big guys the same way and stuff like we've got so many so many kind of language like you've got someone in there to mimic every opponent and like everyone kind of feeds off and shoulders mentalities like the more kind of you know like the more one person Focus the more will drag everyone else into it and stuff like that like and obviously like John and also like Jack Aaron even Jackman who used to fight his other like they're all class like tacos in the country as well and um they're like they're still around like do they could all be back is that Bob and obviously they kind of set the standard first I know all of us coming true just kind of keeping that up and we're all doing well but like you know there's always more coming up and more coming up again yeah like that where obviously with your coaches I believe Jack was number one in Ireland at one stage as well it was one of them anyways I remember because one of them for Nate and Kelly it could have been both could have been all treated him even exactly I think all four like even we're definitely up there one stage anyway you know top three anyway at least I say for each of the four of them like so and like especially for them like for us now like I said we got loads for them it was just like for them I don't know like um obviously back then most students were the same but like it was just almost four of them having to go around to different gyms all over the place just to get spare so like we can have it easy now we've all kind of in one place hello the training partners and soft blood for them they got to the top without having you know fancy gyms or loads training practice and stuff like that like you know we've got like a good good spot now like a good facility in software up but before we're in places like falling down like little boxes and stuff like that like so um it's good to have seen them like you know if they can do it in those kind of conditions and we could have no excuses to kind of show you do the same you know what we have yeah because you don't need the fancy equipment or this that you know you just need discipline consistency and higher I believe obviously skill has a big power to play in it but you see a lot of tons of people who end up just leaving this it's not about who they consider the best at the time as well who's left at the end of the day I think can consistency uh hard work uh and especially when you've got that fighter in you that's what's going to bring you the distance yeah it's just like time like time important definitely let's keep showing up you see some guys um one day like complete beginner you know you'd look at them almost like a restroom then all of a sudden four months later four months later these guys taking you down be new in loans and you're like oh it kind of keeps you on your toes and but like the more time you put in you know like obviously there's weeks then weeks you don't feel like you're there you feel like you're you feel like you're losing to everybody but like it's just over the months you keep showing up and you're gonna be you're going to get up there eventually like you know what I mean because even before uh who before a call but lastly before I call but I said I lost for like two years but like that kind of made made me hungry just keep showing off keep showing off because you have like that's another thing even with John like you know you'd be kind of saying like you know how good you are just keep putting the time in you're going to get better better and better and like the more time you put in especially during schedule sessions because they do a little bit of shiny conditioning yourself but like you know it's getting them doing Jiu Jitsu getting in doing striking getting into it anyway that's how you get better for MMA you know what I mean the strengths and the the weights and academic but like main thing is just showing up in the gym you know getting their arms and then getting the drills and stuff like that yeah just getting in and getting a Donuts demanding and like that you're in a good place there's like I said there's the the generation that's coming through now like said what's coming after you like the the kids that are coming out here because martial arts has evolving so quickly like you said from how your coaches started with like not many training Powers not much equipment and then obviously you've got more but then the kids underneath he has more what's it what's the levels like coming up underneath at the minute I say it's scary it's good it's like there's a few teams now like I know back in the day teens class used to almost be like just I kind of babysit and you know dude leave them two seconds okay certainly yeah I said another car coming through there but oh yeah the kids class is like um he was just being team's class used to be just like a babysitting thing or something like that now we've got all these like teams like you know they're probably 16 whatever kind of coming in giving as good as like so many adults and stuff like that like so it's crazy it seems like how good they are going to be you know because a lot of them just do the others class and leaving stuff like there's a few teams to go just goes out of like very serious are doing um some of the arts classes the Emirates players and stuff like that like and obviously um you know just like being smart about as well they're not coming and doing hair at 100 rounds getting like the head's messed up and stuff but um like yeah some of the guys coming up it's when you look at it compared to say teens like years ago or just level levels above I think so like even Louise know like Louise uh Brittany Louise Brody yeah like she's ridiculous level she's trying to say she's trained as long as I'm training anyway like so probably since she's like I don't know 11 12 something like that and like the level she's down there was crazy and like she was always paying like two and ahead uh the normal MMA experience as well so she's going to be better again when she actually gets to the um you know like when she gets to the full fights and stuff which he also had to do now already yeah no it's it's mad coming up and obviously you talked about there you sat on the last for two years that was 2018 I believe it was was that that when that fight happened is that when you started training or why did you start training and what led you to MMA I couldn't understand like to be honest I got first death did uh at first started uh what's up [Music] um what were we saying again um what led you to MMA also yeah um so like my younger brother uh like obviously we knew John I'm a younger brother was talking to John one day and he kind of started like at the start I always wanted to do it but like I was kind of playing rugby I know it's kind of like um was that good enough level and stuff like that like so like I didn't even look back and I was kind of doing that but I didn't kind of like love it love it you know what I mean like I kind of go I'd enjoy it like and stuff sometimes be like oh like I liked it but like um I started first because um like my younger brother started so I was like next I was like I have to get up next day like do I can't let him kind of get the age and stuff like that because he he'd 100 take advantage of it you get the power over me like you all the way around and stuff like that so um I started first just because him was always in my mind wanted to do it but um one like summer then which was off rugby kind of started and just absolutely loved it like I still don't know like that's kind of like you kind of have to love it I think to go far because if you want to come and do like two sessions a day like 12 obsessions like you know I could be 12 sessions uh if you're doing like say six days a week well that's 12 sessions a week like you know there's a lot of time put in you you want to be loving it like if you're going there every day so um I can understand it just because of him and then kept it off just because I was a distance class I always was into I always watched it and stuff like that did a little bit of you know when I was really really young like taekwondo keep us I think everybody did like you know what I mean but um only like years rugby was the main thing then then when I said to them remain just was all interacting yeah and obviously look how far it was brought you like that you wanted some fighters in the country you're gonna defend your belt this weekend um which I think is gonna be a crack and fight I can't wait to see I've seen you fight a couple of times in person and it's always been a pleasure um you went to the amass as well talk to us about that and what that experience was like and what it meant you and what you gained from her really good it was actually very very good because you know like the way some people kind of they get nervous for one fight they gonna build it off to be like for the fights like obviously they can be kind of nerve-wracking things I suppose at the end of the day you're like um it's just a fight you know what I mean so like especially for the oil maps that it puts one point into perspective because if you do like four or five fights in a week you're kind of like after you're kind of like what's one fight then you know what I mean especially when you're weighing in every day and obviously I was doing middleweight at that time so like it was a kind of easy cop but I could never eat like on a day of fights so for the oil maps that was one thing that was like even tough for me like because every morning like you knew kind of way in that um I think it was like 6 A.M and they since it was middle age I'd be like one of the last few fights were probably like four or five what I'm actually pointing but I could maybe like a small bit like 6 a.m I couldn't eat it after that like one day I tried to eat at like 12 or ones just got sick so I've like not nearly going to the fights like at the end of the week I was wearing like 81.4 or something like that so like you know there was no Cuts going on back then but it was really good experience especially getting before it um you know Fergus because yeah Fergus Jenkins though because he's um he's literally like he was the best in the world yeah and he's class he really really is very good um and like look at people he's training right like he's trying so many people trains but it's like people like Arizona people like that is crazy um because that's mad then like you know and match or match in February this match just it was a week of parties day I know you just kind of he texts he ended up texting me like um on Instagram I saw my phone like like hey mama stop you in court this again I was like that's kind of mad did you only kind of see something it's like that's great like because I saying to people like if he's from England you maybe or something or somewhere close in Europe you kind of not like expect it but you'd be like that's not too mad to think about but it's probably after side of the world so it was very good to fight him the only maths like the person who wrote down to win it I didn't get to train with him a year later just to see you know like how much I progressed in a a year and stuff that like so that was good and I know it's gone completely so track now but uh Maps is good because you're fighting the top guys every day you know what I mean so like it's it's um you're not just waiting every day you're fighting tacos every day so like it's probably the best experience you could get at amateur I think you know yeah I think it is and it shows a whole lot of discipline like you said with the eating and the weighing in every day like you're gonna have to really want it to do that because like I said that's like you're going in empty still making all a lot of people are like fact is like they might eat and they I see on a couple of cases people missed a wait for like they win a fight and Mr wait for the following day because they can they can't manage it but with Fergus obviously I think he's still undefeated if I'm correct um so he actually went through our championships this year again and he lost but I think it was like a bit of controversial one so he was fighting someone that was like um I think did you get a needle head or hit in the back of the head some like illegal strikes anyway I think there's a few things that happened on fight so it wasn't just like a once off it happened over the course like before you I say the three rounds happened like four or five times different things so I think it was like against the dirt you know Florida got like and they got like so he lost it was TKO then they appeal they got it overturned again on the other side and got overturned again and I think your man then that um that beat him went on to like become stacking maybe or something like that in the end but like he probably like you know he's very he's very good probably like the the establish I would say I've come across yeah I I think so far it's probably what he's probably one of the best amateurs in the world like that he was like 12 or 13 and all one stage but like that was good experience for you to get to fight him and then come train because I had actually seen that that he was there and I said that's meant like you said because he's over it'd be different if he was like a or somewhere but it was good of him obviously to reach out to you because he'd fought um and it just shows what kind of a crazy sport MMA is that that's what happens like after you fight a lot of people end up training together yeah yeah because I suppose there's not there's the lads in there the bathroom run at me again but um there's um what I was gonna say yeah it's cool because like obviously like um you know obviously like it's a weird fighter says like um it's not just like a sport because you aren't going to fight someone at the end of the day but at the end of the day you're not fighting them because you hate them you know I mean so there's no hair feeling so like it almost is just like it's spare like it's just a hard spare basically at the end of the day like obviously the um the whole show Lights music all that stuff kind of makes it out but to be like kind of a bigger thing than it is in a way and like even though like there's a bit more on the line because records and stuff but I suppose your record doesn't matter amateur record doesn't matter once you go pro like for the amateur it's just about getting experience getting fighting that's kind of why like that's what I wanted to do for trees just to get that like length of a profile at a show you know I mean because it is still different like like it is just to fight like it's the same as going training but it is still different the occasion kind of those builds up takes more of you know what I mean because you're obviously the way code is that then also there's the kind of getting into the venue you know like when you kind of first step in there's a bit of a probably a shoot of adrenaline the second you step in the doors you see the cave you see the crowd and stuff like that but the kind of more you do it the more you're like look at the end of the day this stuff it doesn't really matter like first few points you kind of a bit freaked out like kind of thinking like it feels like unknown and stuff like oh what's going to happen in there it's going to be something crazy it's not going something different but when you get in the fight then instead it's like it's the same stuff you do you know Monday to Saturday it's kind of like the same you kind of get like some things happen you think you're four to five something's wrong don't forget how to do this or forget it to do last when you get in there just kind of leave it happen everything just kind of happens the same it does every other day of the week once you put into work like obviously like um it's one spot like you definitely don't want to be lacking and draining yourself because it's one like it's you know it's a sport you definitely don't want to just could show up and not be ready for her because if it's something like a rugby match or soccer match whatever you have a bad game who cares you know when it's a fight and stuff you could act you could get you know worse injuries and stuff like that so yeah I can't even remember what the questions no I can't remember what I was going to say now myself uh but yeah like that it is what do you do to work I think that's one of the biggest things a lot of people obviously everyone going into a fight you're going to have nerves and like you said I like what you say because about the environment as well like you go in a fight every day in a gym like you said hard spars that's I think what I'm just need to get used to is the environment of the show was where you have to go in you have to wait around a long time you have to manage your nerves in that time is to get your hands wrapped um there's different things you have to do that if it was just up to fight or if they just get in and fight but this is part of the process that they have to learn as well and I think they Overlook it as well and sometimes Fighters go in and I think it was Kieran Brady said to me he spent so much energy being nervous and the hour was leading up to his fight that he felt exhausted by the time yeah because you can't help but either like even um I thought you was going back to say my stomach and suffer that like sometimes I wake up in the morning and I don't feel like nervous in my head like I'll be actually feeling confident and stuff like that but like my body kind of feels it you know what I mean like so I can feel it in my stomach I can feel it like I might necessarily even be thinking like thinking about the fight but like it's kind of like you know the Taron is coming and your body's getting ready for it like and if you kind of because like no it's just kind of trying to be like look it's gonna happen when it happens just relax till then try to save your energy because like you said he would go through the fight 100 times in your head what if this what if that what if this year's going to get exhausted doing that and it's only going to happen once and you know like whatever happens that happens you know it's kind of like worse what's the worst is going to happen you lose whatever you kind of especially for amateur you just go again you can go again you know like rusuke even if you got like concussion whatever stay over for a month bangs and stuff like you can play again two months later three months later maybe or something you know so there's a lot around it kind of feels like you know oh if I lose the sport is going to be in the world not you know you just even heard about a month or two later you know obviously Pro is different you probably have to space a little bit more about for amateurs just about getting them in and like the show is just it's just a show it's just kind of not because like you said like you know it does mimic the kind of profits and it is good to get out but it means nothing at the end of the day like you know what I mean you don't want to get exhausted you know like just going through with all these hundred different scenarios in your head when it's just gonna happen once yeah I think I think like that amateur should just get used to the environment because it's good though because it's kind of prepares you for sure with the way shows are run now in Ireland and the UK and notice is it's kind of it does prep here for that environment and stuff but like I said your Fighting Championship is a fantastic show it's gonna be a fantastic fight um I want to thank you so much for your time is there anything you want to say before you go or anyone you want to shout out I've seen just all the lads in the gym like all the lads coming off coaches obviously like Aaron Jack um BJ clock is on do a lot of training there now um and people like you know John everyone looks at me on the way up basically and thanks again for having me Dave it's good to finally get it in what is the comments and stuff like that there's not enough people walking around but uh you know one less distraction on there yeah I'd always say of course that's all I actually had Aaron Henry on last night and that's what people were trying to distract them and put it in and like it's it's hard to I've learned now to not look at the comments in the lives yeah the person that's on with me I do this what two times a day three times so I'm used to it but they'll get caught looking at and like that is where like he can come on and it's a more relaxed chat like this actually so I want to thank you for your time I can't wait to see my crack of a fight and uh I will see you next weekend in person yep I'll see you soon today looking forward to it perfect thank you thank you
