Combat Confidential host Tony interviews Louis Pauley right after Pauley’s win on a GladiatEire Fighting Championships card. Pauley describes a tough, cardio-heavy opponent who absorbed his best shots and stayed in the fight until the final round, when the opponent attempted a choke that felt more like a neck crank. Pauley says he entered worried about grappling but felt the fight was his to win after the first grappling exchange, where he trusted his pressure and submission defense. He explains his amateur prep philosophy: improve himself rather than scout opponents, with corners Danny (whom he credits as a martial arts encyclopedia in his corner) and teammate Scott. He walks around about 82–83 kg outside camp, dropped to 70 kg lightweight for this bout—his first time at lightweight after usually fighting welterweight because his last opponent was big—and says the cut was manageable on a strict rice-and-chicken camp diet. Walk-out music was Madonna’s “Like a Virgin.” He plans one or two more fights this year after a week or two off, and speaks proudly about representing his gym on a show he expects will showcase them among Ireland’s best.

[Music] Okay, Mr. Paulie. Blue Paulie. Louis Paul. Yeah, Louis Paulie. All right. Right on, sir. Um, first of all, uh, my name's Tony. Podcast Combat Confidential. Um, so congratulations on your win there. Um, tell me about it. Like, what would that feel like at the end there? Yeah, it was unbelievable. He was really tough opponent. Like I was I was really really hunting for a finish there and I just couldn't get him away. Like he was taking all my best punches and he just wasn't he wasn't going anywhere. And then in the last round he was really fighting to the end. Like he tried to give me a choke but it wasn't like it was more of a crank. I wasn't going to hop out to that. Like Yeah. Like that that typical measure. It was more of a crank. Oh yeah. I was never Yeah. Um what difficulty did you find uh in this? Yeah. Um he was just his toughness and his cardio and like he was just there like he was always there the whole time. like he didn't he didn't take the foot off like he was just always in that fight looking to win it like he wasn't in there just to get beat up like he was there trying to win it that whole fight. Gotcha. Um did you was there any point where you're like or where you thought to yourself um like like you had this? Yeah, it was probably after the first like grappling exchange cuz I was sitting there and I was like, "Yeah, cuz I'd watched a we bit of a striking before. I knew I was better on the feet and then the grappling was the only thing." And once we did the first grappling exchange, I was like, "This guy can't he won't be able to submit me. I've got good pressure cuz I just came into that and that was the only worry." And as soon as I had the first grappling exchange, I was like, "Yeah, this is mine to this is mine to win." Would you prefer to be on the ground or do you like standing out? Impartial. I don't mind where it is. No, I don't mind. Right on. Um, how did you prepare much or did you prepare any differently for this coming into it or we just I just work on myself every time? There's no because there's no point worrying about opponents, especially at amateur because they can you can get so much better so quick. So, we just worry about yourself, get yourself good, know what you're good at, get confident everywhere, get your cardio up, and then that's all it's about on the night, just you. You shouldn't be worrying about anyone else. Right on. Um, can you tell me about who who were your corners today? like um how how do they help you when you're in the cage? Oh, Danny. Danny is the he's one of the most intelligent people in martial arts. The way he speaks, he knows everything about he is an absolute encyclopedia whenever it comes to that. He is a genius for martial arts. And Scott, Scott's just one of my teammates, good friend. He's there in there just whenever you get in the corner and with Danny, you know, you know you're in there with Danny, like he lets you know what's going on. Do you have like a difficult time hearing your corners in there? Like are you able to kind of tune out the the roar of the crowd and Yeah, I can hear Donnie the whole time and like I can Yeah, I can hear him like cuz he's shouting. He is shouting loud. Very good. Um can you tell me just give viewers out there so people who have never done this before um like what what's it like when you get into the cage and the ref closes that door? Uh well whenever he closes the door it's normally okay but before that it is terrific you just so nervous. You've got people, all your friends and family that are watching you. And then but once once you walk out and you hear your walk out music, that's that's fine. The nerves disappear cuz you've been preparing for this. Like I've been training. I never stopped training. Like I've been training all year for this. Like what's uh what what's your walk out song? It was like a pro by Madonna tonight. I changed it though. So it might be something different next time. Enjoy. That was good. Yeah. Excellent. Excellent. Um like what's next for you? Like what do you what do you plan on or how many times do you plan on fighting this year? Um, one or two more just because I I'm want to enjoy myself. Like I've been training all year. Like I've not had really any fun this year. Like my only fun been in the gym. So I'm gonna take a we week, maybe two weeks off, then get straight back in there and then I'll just see what happens. Gotcha. Gotcha. Um, what happened? Oh, sorry. Everything went quiet there for a second. Um, what was I going to say? Um, what what what weight did you fight at? Uh, it was at 70 kilos. lightweight. Is that where you walk at or walk around? No, I walk around probably outside of camp probably about 82 83. Okay, that's not bad. And I'll cut down. Yeah, so um was it is it difficult for you to make these cuts or that was that's the first time I've ever fought a lightweight normally would fight at welterweight and then this time I was like cuz my last fight my opponent was big like and I was like I need to get out of here like this. So I went down the lightweight. Yeah, it was easy enough. Like I just just stay strict to your diet. Just eat the same thing every day and you're fine. What what uh what what are you eating every day? What's your just rice chicken? Boring stuff. Rice, chicken, turkey burgers. Turkey burgers are unbelievable. Well, now now that you're off that, what uh what are you going What's your going to be your first dirty meal that you're going to get in? Oh, Domino's tonight. Oh, yeah. All right. Here, I asked I asked this question earlier today. Um, does pineapple belong on pizza? Yeah. Yeah. Pineapple on pizza. Yeah. Good. Um, I one of my personal favorites is pineapple, ham, jalapeno. Yeah. Sounds nice. Sounds nice. Get a plate. Yeah. Yeah. Do it. Do it. Um, what do we got? Here we go. Oh. Um, sorry. You're you're fighting out of um Z tonight. Yeah. Um, what's what's it like for that gym or to fight out of that gym and for that gym to put on uh these shows? Oh, it's unbelievable. Like, I love the place. Like, I'm so proud to be able to go out there and fight for them. Like, it is an absolute amazing gym. And after this show and the common shows, it'll just show the level. Like, we are one of the best gyms in the country and it'll just get shown tonight. Great. Yeah. Love it. Uh, look man, uh, it was great watching you. Congratulations on your victory. Thank you. Um, is there anything you you want to say or? No, no, that's it. Thank you. All right. Right on. Um, man, a few words. I love it. Oh, yeah. All right. Look, man, I really appreciate your time again. Thank you very much. All right. Thank you. See you later. Let's go.
