Fansview MMA interviews Paul Nolan on fight week ahead of a short-notice catchweight bout in the Republic of Ireland. Nolan explains he accepted the booking after Adam or another contact from EFC texted him days out, having recently returned from his honeymoon and wedding with about five weeks back in the gym; he welcomed not having to cut much weight compared with his usual flyweight or bantamweight. He is set to face John this weekend on an AFC card. Nolan reflects on Ireland’s day-of weigh-in rules versus day-before weighing, the grind of long northern drives from Carlow, and waiting hours at shows before fighting. He recounts choosing a PFL amateur bout against Nate Kelly at the 3Arena over a home B Keef outdoor show in Kilkenny after Miles brought the call to Team Raino HQ, calling the PFL experience surreal and once-in-a-lifetime. He notes family commitments rule out November 2024 fights and plans to reset in the new year, while praising a stacked Irish amateur scene—especially flyweight—and the Republic’s growing show calendar.

[Music] okay so I'm talking to Mr Paul N here who's going to be fighting this weekend H you came in at late notice as well I believe H thank you very much for your time you came in at late notice I believe as well as a catway out um what made you take the fight and it's good to have another show in the Republic oh [ __ ] sorry there um yeah I don't know I suppose I supp supposed to have a have a couple of fights there November and late into December but they're not really suiting me too well and I didn't think I was going to get many um fights to after Christmas then so when somebody your man from EFC I think it was was Adam or one of the wi text me saying would you be interested in fighting in a few days and I was just I was just back off the honeymoon there as well so I was like just will I want it but I was feeling good in the gym cuz I was back like five weeks training so I was fresh up so I said yeah on Stick me down sure we see what happens grab the bull by the horns like so yeah I was happy enough to take it anyway so yes and plus didn't have to cut we either so it wasn't too bad like that way so I knew if it was like if my normal weight fly weight or bantom weight I'd have to do a bit of cutting so I probably wouldn't have taken it on on that way like you know so yeah yeah no 100% so congratulations on obviously the wedding and then the honeymoon thank you very much big it's a big life event so congratulations on that and thank you uh like that like coming in as well you're talking about no cutting weight obviously when you we uh the fighters can fight up nor it's the day before and down here do you prefer one or the other I know obviously going towards Pro you're going to want to do the day before because that's what you're aiming for but for fights like this where you can come in last minute do find a day off handy for if don't want to cut weight and just kind of get in there and scrap or or do you have it is Handy for that aspect but I don't know why did they change it to be honest with you I think they should have just left it with the day before because you have Lads now that are cutting we anyway on the day the same as they would as the day before and to me it's dangerous like so I think what they should have done is just left it at the day before but look in this aspect it kind of turns out handy for me because I don't actually have to cut a whole lot maybe a kilo but sure I'd sleep that off nearly at this stage but um yeah um but yeah look I don't know why to change I think I actually prefer it before because you can kind of reach charge and and get your your fluids back up and all that you a full 24-hour Gap with it and everything so yeah I'm not sure where they were going with the whole day all the way in to be honest with you it's kind of like an old school boxing thing when you think about it because I remember I used to box years ago and I used to be Lads [ __ ] getting carried up to this to the scales like you know it was ridiculous I was then expected to fight couple of fights then in that same day Madness what was going on I don't know if they're still probably are are they I don't know I haven't out of touch with the with the boxing scene no but yeah for sure that's just the way it is at the minute isn't it yeah it is like I understand the principle of it I actually I agree with the principle that and I think maybe they should even change it up your first one to five fights you do and just work on your skills Etc um that and then change it maybe from Fighters five on or six on or something that you can do it for benefit in Pro because I find a lot the shows down south can't get I don't want to say the top fight they they can't get the lads that have a lot of experience they don't want to do day off yeah no that's it you see exactly they're getting caught with B you said with like experienced Fighters and stuff like that because like who wants to wait in the day off it's kind of like a stress as well at the same time because you're you're prolonging the waiting game wait you just want to kind of get the hard work over with and then you concentrate on the fight whereas when you have to do the same on the same day it's a little bit tougher like you know um but yeah I agree with you there definitely 100% yeah um with this weekend obviously you're going to be facing John he's had pull outs and stuff before um do you think it's easier coming in on short notice that you don't have to think about it much I know obviously you'll have a look at his fights and you'll see what bad at but do you find sometimes fight like this might be benefits or you think it's detriment like it's it's good or as bad because I think sometimes coming in when you're not stressing about a fight for weeks it could be better I don't know because I haven't thought that's why I want to hear your thoughts on it yeah I think think there's pros and cons to both of it isn't there you know like like what you said because you're not really stressing about it and when you when you're set a fight six eight weeks out or 10 weeks out or whatever you're set your fight you are actually mentally thinking about it almost every day like you know where's no M thinking about the last 10 days and kind of studying May home the last few days and stuff like that so there there is pros and cons Pro is like you know he doesn't know what he's expecting from me because of short no as well and but it's the other way around when it comes to it's me versus him as well so look I'm just going to get in there and do my best anyway like I always do and I don't take easy fights on you and I'm happy enough to just jump in there and see what happens yeah no you don't like obviously I looked at your tapology just to refresh it and and some of the names I was like [ __ ] hell I actually did realize H like those fights obviously out there for the Shay one and I want to get onto one of the fights actually that kind of I want to get your thoughts on obviously you fought uh against Nate Kelly you got an opportunity a lot of Fighters don't get um how did that feel uh to to do that on that level with that kind of a promotion like that must have been an amazing feeling to get the call talk to us through the process like how did you get the what was your feelings when you got the call and then how was everything behind the scenes and and being in the in the arena ah it was actually it was it was surreal now to be honest with you it was like once in a lifetime I doing I was never going to pass it up but it was funny because at the same time we had a huge show in Kil Kenny going on our home event in an outdoor Arena B Keef it was a massive show at the time and I really wanted to fight and that as well and I was just like toss up between the two and like I was all set for like I had an opponent lined up for for B Keef and I was all set to hit that and then miles just come into me into the gym he said I'm after getting a call off of uh pfl to want to know when to figh n Kelly the tree Arena on such a day my head just went I actually didn't know what to think I was like oh Jesus Christ almighty I've so many things now I have to think about like you know weighing them up but look I was never I was like it doesn't really matter at the end of the day I was like yeah it's been home event and all that but then when I sat down and talk I was like look if this one goes well for the lads they' probably have another one next year i' probably jump on to that show instead and I might get another shot at pfl again so to say that I I went in and done it and on that tree arena is like a small percentage of people only you get to say to do so yeah I was definitely going to go with that um just I don't know like it it was it was was mindblowing the whole process of it like um it literally like you're a pro fighter you know I know it sounds crazy like because it was an amateur fight but just to sit there with all the pros and and go through all the background stuff and the media work and and everything like was brilliant it was unbelievable experience and I never doubt it for a second and you know and I was really happy I went through it at the end of the day and you know matter the outcome it doesn't really matter I still I still got in there and tried me best and that was all I could do you know yeah and like you said that pfl they would have had boys lining up you would have never that chance to get back again sort absolutely and like you said it was an AM fight but like you got like you fought on the pfl there's a lot Pro Fighters that will never fight on that level no that's true exactly yeah like you know yourself likeing the pro game is a hard game to crack into you know you kind of have to fight on on small events for a while and then like you might never get a shot of he exactly like you said so yeah I definitely not passing that one off anyway yeah if they want me again no you can um with the B ke show as well that was I think they will if they get a chance they will run it again from from what I think it was quite successful uh it was I didn't go to that there was that Inver in there I didn't go to any of them at the time I kind of started I took a little bit of a break but um like the show looked amazing like what what that is like those events rarely come around I know paage conflict had one years ago outside yeah I was I was fighting on that one actually as well yeah and they rarely come around so but I think this one might come around again I don't know I just have a feeling it might because it went well Nile's quite ambitious with what he wants to do with the promotion and it's good to see like that another one down Republic and I know I'm not putting a division between North and South and it's not like a like a political thing or anything it's just we sometimes we just want to drive an hour not two or three or four here's your brother I know like cuz I'm obiously in cair so I'm quite close like what what's the traveling like involved for you to a lot of shows I say it's quite heavy it's heavy enough like if you to go up north you're talking three hours minimum you know no matter where you're going could be a little bit more if it's it was into Belfast New where he's like 2:45 but still there's a lot of time on the road especially if you're going up and down and stuff like and you You're expect to be there kind of half early as well so it's not it's not as if it's a short day for you you're waiting around in if you're say last like our main event or whatever sure you're absolutely zonked before the fight even starts like driving up and sitting there mentally in the in the in trans rooms waiting around and everything is hard T going like like we said it' be nicer just to drive an hour down the road like and get your your stuff done yeah I get in there and that's one that's actually quite interesting you brought up that like I know you have to get go there there usually your rules meet and you have to do medical kind of stuff like that your hand wrap so obviously you need to be there early because they need to get people in and ready to go like over time obviously like how hard is that to manage because obviously you need to warm up at certain times you need to make sure your drenal doesn't get too high like is that something that like is hard to deal with or is it something that you found easier over time like because people think fighting is just going in fighting it's not there's a whole event like you said there I think that's one of the hardest parts is the waiting like how do you you just kind of have to go into the into the Zone don't you you kind of have to get deep into your thoughts and and just think about the task and and and and kind of grin and bear it really and he's just kind of Flo around kind of nervously moving around twitching and Shadow Boxing and whatever like just getting kind of nervous energy oh yeah then before you know it like it actually does go pretty quick like once you start getting your hands wrapped and start getting warmed up and stuff next thing you're like oh two fights to go and you're like okay right let's go so then you're switched on so you're ready to go but look yeah it can be a long day at the same time you do be tired after I can tell you that I I can imagine no problem steing after it I can IM drive home was quite tiring as well yeah yeah I look we have like few of the lads down here to be good teammates like and they come up and support you and they help you like to drive you up or if the lads are competing they drive and whoever's not competing they'll drive up the next day and we kind of take turns that way you know just for support and each other because not easy you know driving up that way it's right three hours is tough like on anyone especially going up on back in the same day it's nearly day I know yeah for and getting the kick in the ass at the same for depending on the outcome of the fight obviously you talked about the support there I seen obviously Des Milo and and team Watford you seem quite close you're actually up there I could see shouting for each other what's that oh yeah what's that relation we're affiliated we're we're under the banner of team team raino HQ so like we would be and miles and Bobby would be quite close like as well so we we'd always travel up and down to each other for sping or whatever yeah so we' be close enough that way and then I don't think Bobby was available to Corner Kevin on the the weekend there so might have just stepped in for him so we're happy enough then to pull three hour three then so yeah it was very good night yeah very good night yeah yeah fights are cracking yeah there was H did you see the head kick there was the I I did see that one actually yeah yeah it was only in a couple of seconds was it yeah and I mind I like Paul I think he's a good fighter and it was just yeah he was in hard look at the B keep i t you won that it's just the way to Cookie crumes doesn't it yeah don't leave it to the judges no that's easy that's easy to say but obviously you've got this fight you've taken on short notice you were say you November does that mean November's out of the pcture for you now going forward yeah I know I have a couple of things I've committed to there with the family so I won't be able to do it there so yeah um sure look I'll get this one in and and see what happens then after that and body start back fresh in the New Year again then or whatever you know that kind of way yeah no hopefully the shows aren't as piled up next year as they are this year you've got three on one day in November I know it's crazy is it one two weeks after and then you did have two on the last weekend but de's actually moved his two weeks into December because there's so much going on in November I wish they them after up there in the one go in there like it's about the fighters and trying to get you experience and if you just say you you were booked on Premier let's say for the second November and you get put be so much harder to get a fighter now because there's two other shows going see that's it yeah exactly you don't know where they're going to be like you know so they're definitely going to be a shortage anyway if there is pull outs but should look that's the way it goes and I suppose they didn't mean for that to happen I don't know just just the way just the way it planned out for all the events wasn't it have your pick anyway that's that's the main yeah try to be in three places at one St it's gonna be really hard but like that how what do you feel about the am scene at the minute because obviously I'm heavily involved in it doing meeting stuff and I think the Irish am scene is is is quite good I think a lot of of amateurs would be like early Pros in other countries how do you find the scene at the minute like and especially in your weight class I think that's the most exciting weight classes at the minute it's absolutely stacked so is it's a stacked division the flyweight and the Banton way is just ridiculous even feder way as well feder way is huge division there's so many fedway but I think like the toughest division is the the F division there scandalous am you know the good lads that are in there like you know you have plats there like Billy suland on Miss Oliver Shay Leland like and Daman the sure he's unbelievable as they're all they all really Top Class Fighters and they're young as well which is which is which is a bonus this this old dog is he's sick to fight all young Lads now but sure I don't mind that at the end of the day I'll fight whoever have to fight it doesn't really bother me while getting there against anybody doesn't need M me so do me best but yeah I think um Irish MMA in general is just has going to Skyrocket in the last couple of years the m to Fighters even just on your own home turf now that is just is unbelievable you know even have to travel outside now to fight like years ago I suppose like when it wasn't as popular in Ireland I suppose you'd have to travel around just to get decent fights for yourself sure right on your doorstep now so yeah yeah and there's there's a like there's so many shows there's a new show now in November as well Danny K head and upgrades Gladiator like and like you said with the talent that we have like like you said you don't need to go anywhere because thean Cleveland uh Southerland yourself like you're all fighting each other and learning off each other and that's just going to make like the fight like yourself better himself better like it's just amazing at the minute I think yeah it's 100% it's brilliant sure you can't ask for any more really can you like you have your pick there and all different styles of Fighters too so no there's nothing boring about it either no there's definitely not like it is for me I think flyweight is the most stacked exciting like there's just so many M you could make a whole card of just flyweights well you could CU there's so many but um I want to wish you good luck for this weekend I'm Gonna Let You Go on it is fight week I know you're not cut weight so that's one good thing for you yeah I'm good I'm L to eat is there anything you want to say before you go or anyone you want to shout out I just to thank all the sponsors that sponsor me for my last event in the pfl and you know I have them all attached to me here on my jersey I'll be wearing it out for fight at the weekend and I'm looking forward to putting on a show for AFC as well and thanks to the lads for getting me on in sh as well yeah perfect yeah thank you very much for your time I really do no problem and I will see you there on Saturday peace C thank you very much talk to you later bye bye
