Fansview MMA interviews Dillion Douglas during fight week ahead of a main-event rematch with Daire Toman, their amateur draw that was also Douglas’s last amateur bout. Douglas describes a calmer weight cut around 68 kg, keeping hard training longer after adding muscle, and learning over years to manage pre-fight nerves better than in his amateur days. He recounts how a 2020 Fight Project rematch was postponed by COVID, reviews coming up to lightweight for a split-decision loss to Maga, and explains why he also judges but still trains to finish fights rather than point-fight. Douglas traces his path from an overweight 14-year-old into MMA under Rodney at Stealth, including Scotland day-of toss-up wins, Clan Wars and Golden Ticket amateur titles, a brutal 2018 cut from about 82 kg to 66 kg for one bout while his aunt was seriously ill in hospital, and turning professional afterward. He compares old-school weight-cutting and grueling amateur-era training to today’s deeper talent pool, praises Stealth’s developing fighters like Conor Mallister and Chloe Matthew, and outlines plans to fight more in 2025, step down toward 66 kg rather than 61, and stick to well-run promotions such as Akuma, Stealth, Chaos Fighting Championships, and the promoter he calls Dei, who agreed to book him at 68 kg for this card.

[Music] I'm here with Mr Dylan Douglas the main event this weekend versus Dar tomman this is a fight that's been ran back since the amateur days which was a draw it was your last amateur fight I believe um it's fight week I want to thank you so much for your time because I know fight week even though you came down from the train and there's still a lot to be done within that week where to be waiting that so I do appreciate your time how you feeling what does fight week look like for you nowadays uh B we B we strange uh obviously what the past two years I fought twice uh year before that I thought twice uh strange it it changed sort of as people change uh I find that since I put on a bit more sort of muscle mass bit more size I can sort of keep hard training up until maybe obviously the not be hard training uh that'll be me sort of tapering off now just to sort of keep sort of moving really not really need bre sweat we it's perfect so uh there was no worry about all this whole thing can't we which was a really strange thing uh sort of Flo about between 70 three probably at the start and then just H down nice so yeah I can just sort of chill out and enjoy myself now and actually enjoy the hard part of it before the fun part yeah because I can imagine obviously we're training so hard for so long how hard is it to just shut off obviously you've had a good few professional fights you've had a lot of Amer fights um is that something you've learned about to just kind of shut off for the past couple of days because a lot of the younger fighters the am Fighters I talked to still their minds racing they want to train they want to be in there like how is it for you to be a to shut that off and is that something you just kind of got accustomed to with time of of doing what you do uh don't get me wrong like uh the whole way through the fight Camp has been good uh like ever like I've never turned off in that sort of form away uh I'm still not turn off but I know I've learned sort over the years how to turn that little switch just to go right you know go to bed don't overthink it like whenever I was amate I just like literally like six weeks out my Fe sting bed thinking and thinking and thinking then my heart starts racing not that scared that was sort of thrilled to get in thrilled to do it uh as a sort of Golder I can sort of say that by a bit you know maybe think of something else uh less than audio book where they try to sleep stuff like that sort of just EES me into it a little bit more uh but no man just R like uh like right now sitting talking about it like I nobody has really asked me how I felt which uh my partner doesn't ask me at all because she's asked me that much about other fight Camp she's been you know seven years in with me uh she doesn't ask uh couple of guys H Feel Home do with and I'm like love that [ __ ] man like is you know is the big one now so uh this start that come up for me so yeah yeah and like we said it's obviously against Dar who who you fought before but you know yourself and you see in time and it just happens naturally over time Fighters get better and they progress and they get different obviously you've got better he's got better and you might look like two different Fighters than you did previously um when when this matchup kind of came about was it one that excited you because of of the draw on the last fight yeah uh I wasn't to happen in 2020 but Co set that one back so me a couple of weeks out I think I was at I I remember whenever was called it was I think the fight project to uh I think that was never was the first show done by stealth if I remember right like yeah it was first show done by stealth uh it's the first F project I think was done by RMK i' s you know warming guys up doing the bits of Bobs uh message came through uh J got postponed and sort of s there like I just Sun every B on I had any this just before that i' thought Jordan May's uh that was August 209 20 2020 2020 think was uh 2019 no 2019 uh but no it's definitely it's uh so was something that was meant to happen uh but man I it's I don't know how we've changed uh obv I haven't really kept a lot Dar is doing brilliant obviously when New Year and stuff there's a lot of cracker guys coming out his gy uh couple obviously judged whenever it's worked on that uh haven't got a chance to see is it JY am I right yeah I haven't got the chance to see him live which I'll not probably because it's only a couple of fights before me and the fight uh I've seen is it uh M as well seen him fight Banger uh so he's pulling out some great guys uh and obviously they're varant STS me and our is not really the tallest so we sort of Mee in that weird mle of you know both rly sort of styles but man it makes no difference like we we go in we do the thing we just get it done with yeah no and I can't wait to see the fight and I watched your fight with magga and I looked at you before and I'd watch the stuff that was a split decision and that was a tough close fight um like when you came up you came up to lightwe for that which is is quite quite a bit out so one fair play for coming up and taking a fight like that cuz I know mag's coming down I know Maga quite well so I know mag's coming down you were coming up how did you find that fight how did you find it because you you you hit like someone who would fought at that weight class anyways because you caught him a couple of times as well uh yeah was sort of going by like old amateur days amateur uh amateur I think what was I thinki 5 was 84 made my way down to 77 made my way down to 70 last three amateur fights but at 66 uh and I found it was quite big there but uh no coming up the fight just previously that was out of shape and bought Leo on Hill lost by TKO great great guy too uh and then coming up to M was might have been Michael quim was m fight ma if I remember right uh don't remember how I got the show I think I was just ENT training one day uh and sort of showed it you know rbody sort of setting around so on so and I think I'm s 71 here I'll do uh so yeah we uh we were in fight camp but we Wen in fight camp for the right thing uh not like this before the fight with mag was even announced we're in sort of camp we w a it was a running joke in stealth uh and it's completely I love burp with a passion uh so we we're going to try and beat the burp world record in a minute uh so we're sort of messing about praying for that and going yeah we'll give it a go we'll give it a go near near Christmas and then I can just enjoy Christmas and then the fight came so that sort of threw that off the scale but no whenever went Maga I don't know if it was my ego sort of got to me but I remember looking at my going it's not that big it's not that big and then looking at the F was after going he is huge uh and then he thought obviously we had a couple of guys at the last year uh he was me event against Jess Paulo yeah man I'm pretty sure see if Maga would have came out the same way that he came out at Jess po against me it smashed me so much easier uh don't get me wrong I thought I just be damage done but it's one of those things you know I shouldn't have left that but if somebody was going to beat me you know I'm quite hard was my he's one of the loveliest guys and really wish him bought the Bas like just so guy but he has so bag for a lwe yeah too he like he when he fought Jesse came out the gates didn't he I was like whoa and then he made one mistake and and and that's what it was but um you talked about obviously when he leaves off to the judges obviously you judge and you do that stuff yourself um how do you find sitting on that side as well and doing the judge and do you think it gives you more of an understanding as a fighter about what's been scored and and what could potentially help your game to get decisions to Edge in your favor do you have you found that beneficial to transfer over to your to your fighting career yes but uh R how's it and you don't leave it that you never leave it uh like thees I've seen obviously like UFC's a primary examp fights you go in you look at it go on that wasn't right that wasn't right uh but again every judge scores it slightly differently there's a not a slight biased in what fighter it is but slight biased in the way it's judged uh the way it should be done is obviously Damage Done who's looking to finish the fight then control then cat control and aggression so depending on how you look at it that way uh but no I Rodney has it drilled into us from years and years ago uh whenever we were obviously if at 16 in that you go to finish a fight you don't go in win the judge's scorecards like uh if you go out you know you are winning the fight and you get caught man that that happens it's just you might have took your ey off the ball they might have just had that last bit in them whenever you were going for stuff but no uh and never sort of think along the lines of yeah I'm going to go and you know lie down on somebody for three rounds and get the one because I haven't done any damage uh like there's guys that works for it's not for me i' I'd rather go micheld and just you know try and make a good fight out of it and get the win uh get the win without having to go yeah the judges all you know three other people thought of one and saves the whole argument too uh that one I never made R previously we're going by damage and fight finishing uh I did more damage you know just going for more subs but the had far better control on the ground so yeah it's one of those things it's don't leave it there uh I try not to think about that at all obviously it's same way as going a two different jobs you know one job you worry only about what that is the other job you worry only about that is so no I wouldn't I wouldn't think of it in that line of questioning I wouldn't go out the way to go yeah you know I'm going to think about how am I going to one points this round you know as from a corner team he think about if he' be yeah no 100% 100% but go back obviously you you've been around quite a while talk to me what what got you into MMA at the time because MMA right now obviously is really hot in the country he really hot globally because of of the likes R Rousy Conor McGregor all these kind of people who kind of brought to the Forefront when you got in it wouldn't have been viewed as the as the way it is now what brought you to MMA and and most importantly what brought you to the gym that you're in as well G wise I was a 14y old uh really really overweight and I was I want to say I was about 5 foot one I want to say that I haven't grew too much over the years uh if anybody asked him 5'8 if my partner asked him 6' but uh no I had started whenever I was 14 I think I sting well over 100 kilos or six somewhere around 16 stor uh I was definitely an out of shaped kid uh start off just as you know something fun he do he lose weight next thing I know had a gym membership you know in a standard commercial gym whenever was 16 next know I'm sort of going yeah I'm really enjoying this I'm starting to you know do well uh then obviously with Rodney at the time because there wasn't a lot of names them but because bam is a very not small town but be a fairly decently sized Town everybody knows sort of certain names in the town and you always hear everybody talking well Rod so uh like i' never had any interest in books and never had you know any interest I definitely never had any interest in football it just never clicked with me uh get MMA started training you know started subing a couple of guys that rag doed me uh whenever was in beginner's class and I'm sort of going here maybe this maybe this is for me uh obviously the we started to come down again uh we're going way back it's not actually on tab or anything from what I know uh I think it was 84 kilo I fought well flurry so that's going back that to decision for Richie cral I think 84 then moved down to [Music] 77 when did I move down to 77 can't remember when but had a few F 77 uh and then started making away from 77 don't 75 72 70 uh so i' fought I think 7 I fought try think sort of names that sort of started so there was six fights in row I was on beting before I went pro all between 77 66 and it was who did that start with James [ __ ] over in Scotland uh which was a funny story so me and me and James both from here I think he's retired now if I me right uh me and James are both from here and we're a minut ago fight Scotland where was on the dayway and so we both sort of I was walking at 70 all times anyway uh so we both our guys pull out so we both knew we just sort of said here but we just have a toss up in the middle of Scotland and you know we're both fight prepped uh so we don't had a toss up uh I sub James in the third then went on to fight Jr Campos took him to Split Decision One fought hug for the clamor lightwe Bel won at the first round sub and then George Courtney was meant fighting golden ticket for a fourman tournament but he had to pull out with something uh so I thought right hell my time uh I'll take George had offered me at first because he didn't want to just pull out and you know not get the option to anybody uh so I said yeah hell I'll take it uh so thought uh BR Bel I think it was Ben Robson from wheels for him sub him the second way gutin uh and then went on took their better we title two months after fting the guy Mike promy September the 4th uh after that I had to take from I think January until end of January until start of June how they take it off completely uh there's a lot of stuff going on uh so couldn't train couldn't really do anything put on a pile away again uh so that put me up to I think back up to about 82 kilo or something somewhere around there uh so June so from June till July August September October five months I had to get from 8 kilo down to 66 again to fight and that was all 2018 so 2018 only that one F uh and then that was it's a fate that leaves sort of that very sweet sort of tast in me mouth too not just because of the Fate we end up while that fight was Ono me was in hospital but we didn't know the severity of it she knew the severity of it uh the doctors knew but they didn't tell us until after the fight uh and she was a really like she came over four fights she's she's originally from here left Eng ni switch she traveled the whole way from nswitch to wolver hton twice to watch me fight uh so the severity of that that sort of put a whole you know that left that better sweet sort of tast my mouth uh and obviously went pro after that but no that was so sort of strange you talk about that talk about that years uh yeah so that's sort of how the whole sort of twist about me starting MMA was it was uh weight loss turned out I liked it turned out it was all right it and then turn out it was good on yeah no it's it your your ad career is kind of like recently you'll come in these fwice last minutes you go to Scotland on the day you'd have the tossup H for man tourament yeah why not it just shows that you are a true fighter at heart and it just shows what I've done for you like personally with with the likes of the weight loss and stuff like that and and sorry to hear about your aunt as well because that obviously um it it like you said it's kind of bitter sweet but like in that in in the time that you've been in MMA since you started have you seen like what kind of evolution have you seen whether it be uh Talent training weight cutting like have you just seen this stuff if you went back to when you actually started now would you think it's kind of two different world the way things are going on uh football and soer that's a perfect example of it's you know same sport but it's not the same uh yeah 110 uh so back years ago it used to be salt b or a thing but it was more focus it weren't really spoke about they weren't really understood waterl wasn't really understood uh you know H C wasn't really understood every thought it was all cars and you know F she couldn't take like stupid stuff uh you just to see guys C we in the gym with son on you know sh boats in four days out uh he break us way just start going you know that look horrible uh but the talent wise like we stood by it uh the way we used the train made us the fighters we are but that at the time was maybe one a th000 you know was going to make something whereas now maybe it drops to you know maybe 1 and 3,000 1 and 5,000 somewhere around that because a lot of ones coming up now obviously aren't as you know they're pandered a we bit more uh like whenever we were in training you know you went in on a Monday the two hours of straight and Tuesday two hours of wrestling after cattle Bells uh Wednesday was BJJ I usually went we so the way I did it was found out I absolutely love the he SP because of this so there was me at 16 you know I absolutely I think that's 90% of where my Liv came from Rodney let us do that at 16 uh but we didn't know any better nobody knew any better uh so we went in dead legs on a Wednesday uh then I BJJ I never died the opposite way I went an early morning you know uh 8K and then one Tech at the time uh and then left take half day one2 weeks we that uh we we leg I absolutely love that uh Thursday was two hours of grapping Friday was The Hil day Friday you run RS at 11:00 to do pads from pads you went straight from pads up to the gym you do legs from there you went home for a bit you had B dat then you went straight into Spar you went to bed the next day you woke up you went straight into Spar again so that's what I mean we look at and Rodney's an like we Pro nobody probably should have been doing that but we didn't know any better uh uh but that's the way the pros would are trained uh the amateur trained like the pros nowadays we have a lot of amateurs coming up that are training like obviously the likes of me and you know any other high level you know CL and stuff like that we're all training like pros the amateurs are training like pros so what do the pros need to do more of to you know change that whole game plan uh but like technical wise uh we have guys like Connor mallister uh couple of the young team coming up we're starting to get really really slick in the MS uh we OB Chloe we have uh St G if we can po him back into it again uh I think he's just getting old H well I'll tell that you have Nei Gordon you have uh oh can't remember all the names off the top my head it's not a fun thing you have to do but you have those guys coming up and your s going on yeah they're different than what we were you know whenever we were coming up like me R uh Mark uh we're looking at sort of that there and going on here what's what's the next game plan going to be because for year that was you know a heavy Striker was nine times out of 10 W the fight then a guy with great BJJ was always won the fight then it was wrestling was winning the fight at what point is it qu switch back around again and go yeah now it's Striker winning again because he can stop the wrestling at what point the end does it go right Striker getting beat by a BJJ guy off his back you know that's the way I always look at it it's it's like fashion fashion always rolls backround uh uh what was the Jing boms people used to wear poppers uh they were out St they came back again now they're gone again but they'll be back because that's the way fashion is Fashion's MMA uh MMA whatever isn't working people regress back to better techniques with the older style and it'll just keep recycling itself at some point it'll be uh somebody obviously very rarely to come along somebody that's just great at everything uh but that's goal is to be you know outstand everything be a master all trades and jacking on yeah no 100 I like that the likes of your says Mark uh recent are kind of paved away for these Fighters and be have to do what they do now and and he kind of led the way so it's good that you're able to see them grow in the gym though he one person that you mentioned that I think this year I think she's probably one of the most improved Fighters I've seen I think she has just looked absolutely Sensational for someone who's only what two years in the game two and a half years three maybe she grown immensely and it just goes to show what the likes to Rodney yourself and everyone are doing in in the gym with her as well but it's um going forward obviously you're not looking past Dara um are you looking to be a little bit more active than you have been I know obviously there was Co and all the past couple of years are you are you looking to to really go at again this year and yours a show you fought on twice now in the past year is that another how how have you found dealing with Dei and fighting on that show because from all accounts from I hear from everyone he's probably one of the easiest to deal with and the show just just runs the way it runs uh yeah next year's got a bit back here uh I think it was me George courney J R talk after last year uh like there's certain shows I won't touch now uh just because I don't like the way they run I really don't like the way they run uh so there is shows obviously very adant I will fight on because like Akuma is a fantastic show too St has a great job with that uh the thing I look at it is he well I don't know if he's retired not uh but I'll say is uh not retired uh so he is a fighter he knows what a fighter needs he knows how it's run he knows what he likes behind the back stage uh like there's way day is exact same day is phenomenal to you know fight for uh he looks after you man it's you know that's what I mean not many other shows uh chaos and our great show as well really well run uh so like oh hold on uh was that so d a lot of shoes probably would have done a 68 cat we truthfully a lot of them wouldn't have done that uh d looks out for the fighters so me and him have had talks after obviously I thought M he wanted me move back down 66 he said he would look into it came back to me said yep we'll get your 68 uh it wasn't about me you know pushing for it D he looks out for the fighters that he is trying to match uh looks out for you anytime he can't you know he's not ping you B ticket sales or this or the other uh he's a really like well rounded sound guy uh don't get me wrong I'm absolutely right and I'll not get to see Kier Brady fight that's a fight I really I wanted to see him fight uh I'm sort of peev they won't get to see that one uh but that's things we just way on that side but uh yeah 110 been more and more more active next year uh no more tossing about you know the higher we class uh definitely make the move down at 66 uh and stay around there we were looking at 61 but I think that is a far throw from now uh maybe whenever it was 21 I could have had it but definitely not now oh I like that you fought mag 70 it's going to be 68 now it's all coming down in increments when you go try to do the big jump sometimes like you you talked about before having to to cut loads away and and then it's not coming off and I think you've talked about your weight being okay and you kind of feel really good for this one like the weight's nearly on point when I think when you're killing yourself okay it might give you a bit of a size Advantage coming into the fight but how much does it take away from your your cardio mentally all those other things so obviously step by step I think is is is potentially the best step I don't know I'm a fighter you you would tell me more but I want to thank you so much for joining me I've really really enjoyed this talk I hopefully we get to have one again if you're going to be fighting again next year I definitely hit you up for another interview is there anything you want to say before you go or anyone you want to shout out like I said I appreciate your time this close to the fight yeah absolutely uh obviously a lot of sponsors and stuff uh my JY so I'll start that Ro my uh St G uh George Courtney you know Conor mallister Chloe Matthew frel there's so many guys I can't you know I want to think that gy uh guys and girls depending how you you know whatever uh don't sexist uh so think think you know all the coaches out at stealth as well uh they've been absolutely phenomenal uh like light of race Mark Le so on so forth like that uh my partner deserves a big big show out she is prob mind so and so for me uh especially whenever the fight was released she thought I knew about it but I didn't know about it whenever it was released I did I knew England but obviously kept up to date on that but no she we were down in Dublin she was doing her cut course by JS uh which again great bunch of folks there uh but yeah sponsor wise uh first and foremost obviously the longest run sponsor I think I've had since I was 16 or so since my first actual fight uh P barers shop uh she one of the nicest women in there you know she's worked her whole life uh she just has a great you know down Earth person uh so she's been longest running uh I'd like to thank stealth obviously and our sort of long running sort of relationship there from obviously the RMK days transition on move completely away from that uh and then me the other sponsors the lights of two swords tattoos great great folks there uh local and palamina they you know wouldn't push anybody else to go on else uh every in there great great Crow uh they've done a great lot of work with it uh sparing a fairly new one that I've got uh Spar Logistics again really looked out for me this whole Camp helped me with you know pay Bell sort of stuff like that like Bloods medical stuff like that really can't fault them uh they do a lot of sort of higher end work and Yachts and stuff uh so they would do like the computerize side of that and the final one is oood bubs uh again great bunch of folks uh they're they don't just breed to breed uh they will make a point of checking up the dogs you know weekly make sure the dogs are well looked after if they're not they well uh deal with that as need be uh and honestly you would never you know have somebody I would never recommend you ever get a dog if you're looking a certain grade of dog 110 are the best back poppers uh and then e for
