Post-fight interview with Akim Kinsella after IUR Fighting Championship XIII, recorded for Combat Confidential on 12 December 2024. He describes winning by submission early in the second round—roughly ten to fifteen seconds in—with a guillotine against the fence, though he missed seeing the tap because someone called his name and he looked away. He says the first round was tough: his opponent came out aggressively and scored an early takedown by lifting him, but Kinsella felt comfortable on the ground, swept to top, traded ground strikes, and entered round two confident he could finish once the fight hit the mat again. He credits long jiu-jitsu drilling with coach Nas at SBG and strong corner advice. He says the bout was confirmed about six weeks prior after a difficult year of injuries and inconsistent training, and that at twenty this was his sixth amateur fight; he wants more amateur experience before turning pro. He plans a two-day trip to Amsterdam the next morning and expects to be back training by Wednesday, training twice daily. He advises first-time amateurs to treat the cage as part of the process and focus on experience rather than overthinking the occasion.

[Music] [Applause] [Music] welome back uh I got Mr aim aim canella yeah canella yeah sorry um a thing for me I always screw up names they could be super simple and lot people get my name wrong all right um first of all congratulations thank you very on that submission second round like like 10 15 seconds into or something like that we don't even know um it was it was right um so congratulations on that it was a gting correct yeah um literally I turned away someone called my name and then I looked back and it was over so unfortunately I missed it so I'm going to have to look back on the tape check it out but um congratulations um how was how was the first round for you H to be honest yeah it was a bit a bit tough like He Came Out Swinging I knew he was going to come out a bit higher down the first round I was expecting that but I didn't really expect them to take me down to be honest with you yeah actually that was a big takedown right the beginning he picked you up down but I'm very comfortable on the ground like once I'm on the ground it's kind of my world you I mean so off my back I felt good when I swept him I got on top I felt good he hit me a good few shots on the bomb so I had to get back with you as well and they going into the second round I knew like once it got to the ground I knew I could finish him like I felt in the fourth round like I didn't have many submission attempts in the first round but I just felt the positioning like in the way he was moving on the bottom he was going to scramble into something so when I CAU the giltine against the fence I knew it was on as soon as I jumped it you know what I mean I always finish them in the gym so I have good arms so you know have Bounty arms get it's done really um how long in the making was this fight like how how much time do you have to prepare for it I think the game I think I got confirmed about s weeks ago but to be honest it's been the whole year has been up and down with injuries and sicknesses so I didn't really train much up until this fight was on and off like one week i' be training one week I wouldn't cuz I had the nurse an injury or something so it was tough boy I just trying to get as much experience as I can as an amateur before I go pro that's what it's all B when he looking to go pro not for a while now I want to get just real quite young how old are you 20 yeah so I just want to get real comfortable in the C mean that's my sixth fight now a lot of my fights haven't gone me away but I just feel like this whole year I've really improved as a fire even mentally like I just look at a lot different than I did last year so absolutely yeah you know I always look for whenever I see you on the card I do look forward to watching that fight yeah yeah no I try to have good fights win or lose I mean realistically it's about entertainment so yeah trying to make a good fight entertaining fighter you're very skilled and like you said you're very skilled on the ground as well and you know as a Jiu-Jitsu guy I love seeing that love in a really good round game that's that's all my coach Nas to be honest like just hours and hours of jiujitsu drilling techniques with him and my teammates in the gym and spbg and it's it's just paying off now thankfully So speaking of naras what is it like having you know someone like naras in your corner coming up to these fights with you it's got something special it's very good just cuz I know how much how much knowledge he has for us you know mean like it gives you that bit of confidence like you feel you feel calm down that if I'm in a bad position I know there's going to be good advice coming into the cage from the corner and then h it's just good you know I'm just happy I'm grateful for my team my coaches and um yeah just business as usual tomorrow for you yeah um you take some time off I'm I'm actually going away in the morning for two days oh yeah I'm going over to Amsterdam but then straight back to I'll be back in the gym Wednesday I literally put more time into this game than I don't even know who like every single day twice a day I'm training him and that's probably I'm getting sick so much all training but it is what it is I'm just trying to be the best man right on uh all right if you could get kind of one piece of advice to someone who's maybe aspiring to have their first MMA match what what would you what would you say to them just just the process I mean trying hard going in don't look at it like this big huge thing like having a f the amateur scene realistically it's just about getting into the cage and feeling it whether you win you lose obviously everybody wants to win that's the goal but it's just about experience you know I mean that's all it is so just don't think about it too much don't piig it up in your head cuz realistically it's just what you do in the gym every day you man right it's the same thing so well congratulations uh I Look to many more fights of yours many more victories um and I look forward to that day you go pro and be there congratulations again all right have a good one [Music]
