Fansview MMA interviews Adrian Barrow in fight week ahead of his first title bout, the EUR bantamweight championship against J Ryan on Sunday. Barrow describes feeling strong on the scale while water loading three days out, and says returning from roughly two years away—including time in Australia where long work shifts made training inconsistent—renewed his hunger to compete amid Ireland’s busy amateur scene. He traces his start to Yoda Martial Arts under coach Ran Rod, with an early push from his brother’s links to Sudden Impact before that gym closed; he began around 2016, took his first fight after just over a year, and recalls crude early weight cuts and an amateur ruleset that allowed knees to the head before they were removed. On his comeback he credits two submission wins—at Cage Conflict and Virtus—and outlines how mental coaching with Barry, recommended via teammate Pierce, shapes his camp, including treating the title fight as a performance goal rather than obsessing over outcome. He studies opponents including Ryan, has another Cage Conflict booking not yet announced, wants frequent activity against top bantamweights, and praises promoter Dai’s run show after a COVID-cancelled earlier booking.

[Music] right so I'm here with Adrian bar who's goingon to be fighting this weekend for the EUR Banton way championship against J Ry um a fantastic fighter he's had two fights recently fantastic submissions it's fight week how are you how are you feeling how's the wake up how is everything oh feeling unreal feeling class um can't wait for this weekend uh the weight's good um just sort of like just s of the gym there now um I'm three days after from the fight so just focusing on in the middle of water loading so focusing on just starting to get the weight down but like the body's feeling unreal like every week what I do it honestly just gets better and better like so um can't wait for for Sunday yeah and like that like you were away for quite a bit you came back with the two victories you've looked like the two submissions were fantastic um your time away from the cage did that make you hungry to come back to the cage while you were away oh 100% um I remember when I was in Australia I remember like I was working like 12 or days basically and I was signed up to gym over there but like trying to make it in time to get the TR was like hit or miss sometimes sometimes it got but then it wasn't all mentally or physically there um so I just remember sitting on the couch like watching back old fights of mine and was like [ __ ] hell I really I really missed that like and and it was just like there's few shows few shows coming up with like uh people I fought or boys who like I was like watching um and there doing well and I was like I I feel like I'm I'm missing out a big thing like I really wanted to get home it gave me like a real a real bug to get back and and like put everything in it yeah and You' come back at the right time there's so many shows there's so much going on the scene is absolutely buzzing at the minute um but like obviously to get stage out you had to start summer so like what led you into MMA in the beginning all those years ago uh so I I fight and train at a Yoda martial arts under R Rod now um but prior to that my brother worked with am mnol um he had Sudden Impact him mean it g for years and I think he actually trained ran all them years ago when he first started but um I unfortunately closed down at the time with like uh I think he just like Family Matters to deal with and stuff so his priorities weren't all there at the time and then me and a few other wise just sear TR in in UDA um but other for other than my brother I don't know if at the time I would have had any connections to start it because I started in the 20 2016 I think something like that um but he just shout at me one time because I was playing playing a bit of football at the time as well so he's like come to come to MMA he was looking to give it a go and I was like [ __ ] it all I'll go to like so went to the first session and and as I say like you've you've caught the bug for it like so that's made ever sense and when you when you caught the B did you think you were going to compete did you think it was going to be a hobby or um the first time I think it took me about two months of TR and I don't know if it was short or long or anything but I I just actually really enjoyed enjoyed the whole like train aspect of it and like actually learning about fighting learn to defend yourself I really enjoyed that I was a big fan of WWE H up as well so was always mad about that but uh no I think two months in one of one of the older boys in the gym he was he was fighting on a show and it's mad when you that in that age you like really like look up to them admire them and stuff um but I remember going to my first show and I was like this is it was actually auma um I [ __ ] I don't know who was headlin I can't remember but remember being sitting there and just thinking this is [ __ ] class like I'd love to be in this position just go out and make a walk and fight and compete yeah cuz like the amateur shows like their events now like it's and the atmosphere is fantastic but when you did first make that walk as an amateur what was the feelings like coming up to nervousness excitement like talk us through kind of your first kind of fight Camp week sort of a thing [ __ ] [ __ ] and Bricks to be honest with you um because now see now you have all the the Grassroots and you have like the novice fights and stuff like that like I I didn't have any of that and if if I stand corrected I don't think it was going at that time there was like in-house shoes and stuff but there was nothing to really like actually get you set up to fight in the cage and like a s out like like hotel room or anything like that um but now my first fight I was I was [ __ ] in bricks like I literally as I saying all I knew was playing football from growing up and then I was training I think just over a year until I had my first fight um and it's it's funny looking back on too because you think you're doing everything 100% but it's just the like it's just like the stupid way of doing things I remember like wood cutting and I remember drinking like 10 lers of water 10 days out um and just like I'm going to school I was still in school at the time going to school just eating p and China every day and like just getting really skinny and then D doing this like [ __ ] massive weight cut and then um and then Looking Back Now it's like [ __ ] hell I was so stupid then and then that's maybe why my atude I is like I don't mind we Cuts because it's nothing compared to the the first couple of ones of them yeah because well at that time like MMA was only kind of coming into the country and we didn't really have the knowledge of the likes of the wake us now you've got nutritionist everywhere you can find information everywhere internet that sort of thing and it's one of those things it just gets better as it goes on you know the sort of a way so and you learn that as you go on but your first fight when you actually got into the cage though like what was that feeling like were you really nervous then or was did it hit you then right I'm here like what was going to your mind if you can remember that is I remember remember the DJ didn't play my walk out song and I was [ __ ] raging with it because being in school I was just like looking up looking up like songs thinking what be a walk out song and I remember being on H SoundCloud one day and I was like [ __ ] OB be a tune and I remember sending it to the DJ or whatever and then he didn't even [ __ ] play it and I was raing walking out um but going into the cage and stuff it was it was a real like weird feeling um just not like obviously not never experienced before I've only played team sports um and then going in there I was like watch I watch it back it's like he nearly cringe like of how like it was so like back and forth and stuff um like cage gra and all that there but it was like it's just like I was like trying to go for sub missions flat out I remember like we we were Tau like all these like ninja chokes and stuff against the cage and I was like trying to like work all them and it just wasn't working out but first fight actually got the win but I fought when I shouldn't have been fighting in that sense like I I don't think I was ready for I could have should have trained another year and a half maybe until I actually had my first fight yeah that's mad a lot of people say that when they at that kind of time they kind of just went in it was like the rule sets were different as well for am I believe back then there was KNE was there knees and elbows back then yeah I remember there was there was knees there's knees ahead uh I think that was the only whenever I started knees the head were loud and I think it was the year after that they stopped us yeah I think I think for Amur I don't think you need the knees to the head because a lot of people do do it as a hobby and um but then it's weird because then when you go to Pro you have these weapons and you've never used them in a live situation so it's kind of do you want these people to get hurt at amateur or do you want to go pro like it it depends but no it's like you went you've had quite a few fights and like I said you took that break um you've come back and look fantastic I talked to you before we actually went live and we talked about the mental aspect of it obviously all you're training is physical the fight is physical do you think a mental aspect is something that's overlooked by a lot of Fighters that they don't pay as much attention to as maybe they should I think I think it's coming more into light about the whole whole mental side of it and how much how it actually is a big thing like um but I think there definitely is part of it overlooked I think people think sometimes when [ __ ] blazing it out every session is is all it like as you say physical but I do think the whole mental aspect has the big part to play um particularly for me like from my experience actually as I remember before one of my fights in clown wars I think it was against Jed Hiller I remember ran Rod my coach he sent um the Johnny Wilkinson podcast into the the group chat it was um Johnny Wilson oh [ __ ] what was the um what do you call what do you call that F come to me anyway high performance podcast the high performance one Johnny Wilkinson was on it um and it was just like he was thrown out absolute gems like you you had to listen to it maybe five or six times so actually really grasp what he had to say and the big thing he was talking about was like just like Flow State um getting Flow State and stuff and uh he was just talking about him getting injury after injury and his like his body just kind him slow down for a bit and just like recuperate where you're at and go again eventually just don't rush back into things um and he was on about like I think one time they're preparing for like a big game and they were saying about like all the way in the changing room were saying like [ __ ] I hope the number 10 doesn't doesn't travel well today and like just like saying all this like negative [ __ ] and he was like no [ __ ] that he was like I want them at the best he like if we get them like like if we beat them like that gives us a sense of like like invincibility like and like I just was hooked in that whole like Flow State sort of thing um so always been like really interested in it um and then I remember just seeing bar Carin s s your head coming up uh few people are doing them and then one of my teammates is doing Pierce he was with them and he would like recommend him and I remember just dropping a message and then uh uh I just got chatting to him and then started started one of his his programs and it was Unreal like just understand like how main works and just different scenarios like day to day like not even with fights coming up but like I think like P he uses analogy like that he got from bar and it's his class he's just like if you're if you're like training with someone who's like less experienced on you and and they take you down it's like don't think [ __ ] sake like someone like he's that white out level or something just took me down it's like all right like let's just like work for the next position like let's just see we're now in a new position so um just like we GMS like that that our class like and and I remember like before fights with b as well he was like he was like how could you make this week like look like a perfect week and and then before fight he was like once once you've like box is tick and you know you're you're good to go like he goes like you can't tou yourself then yeah once once you've done everything you can do properly in the buildup that's all you can ask from yourself to go into and like like we said since you've come back like the two submissions were fantastic I think you had two arms in one of them at one stage didn't you was that the cage conflict one cage conflict had it in the end of the first round it was to be honest um I think thank [ __ ] we talk about focus on performance and not about the end result because I had a lot to learn from that that first cage conflict fight um but but I had I had the arm in the end of the first round and then I managed to get uh inverted then uh in the second round to get the arm bar um then the show in the vir show in it was way bit quicker I think it was like minute and 20 or something like that um but no like it was it was funny like I I just go go through phases in the gym um and after after I got the first one my coach laughed at me and he's like you you can't even tell me how to do that now like he's he could even shoot me at now and then I don't know the Yan is I guess is ridiculously it's just obviously just drilling drilling Drilling and you're very good at cutting the Angles and trying to find that submission is what I found like when I was watching it was like you were always hunting for something but to come back to to two victories like that how does that make you feel after being away from the game for for two years it it puts my name back in the sort of Mex and pot again like there there is a lot of top BTO the minute like is you're saying the show after show and it it is just like like a so there so many like [ __ ] really good fights nearly every weekend or like every month um and it's just put my name out there a bit more like like I only want to fight the best like [ __ ] why not like I don't train multiple times like a week just to like [ __ ] like fight nobody like I I'm here like to passest myself you know what I mean so um to them two wins there sort of put name back in the mixing order like so that's the that's the yeah and then obviously you've got now the fight for the title of the weekend against J Ryan or yeah J Ryan sorry I near got so and when you look at like when you were coming up to a fight do you studi them much does Ryan studied him much or do you just look at the basics or or how does that kind of work uh no I studed him why not just it's PR money out there they're obviously going to study me as well like but um I think just not get too obsessed with with what to do because I think sometimes that can hold a lot back but like Ryan will go and study him and I'll go and study him and then two teammates will go and stud like we're we all film study like all the time so we're we're watching fights anyway and then we'll watch our opponents and we watch our teammates opponents and just see what we can pick up um but then again it's not to get too obsessed on it because um that kind of goes back to what what bar said is as well it's like like don't focus on certain things like focus on having like a great performance like I think I'm actually really glad I work with b as well because this is obviously my first title fight as well and maybe for some people it doesn't really change anything but for me the title fight pretty big deal like um but it's just approaching this one is as like it's not win loss or it's not title fight or what comes after that it's focus on having a great performance and then we'll see what happens after that yeah because like like that you can win or you can have a great performance and lose and be happy with your performance but all you can do is perform to the best of your ability and the light the title and the win and the loss kind of can get people kind of bogged down in in those things in the likes of the title but it's obviously good you've got Barry going into it so like with jark coming forward like you've got him obviously you're not looking past him but do you have any for the rest of the year or you just fing Sol solely one fight at a time no um I always sort of have fights led up I actually have one lined up the cage conflict uh it's not released yet so I I don't know what the crack is probably not standing but probably posted in a couple days or so but um that's that's an exciting fight um probably in my opinion one of the one of the best bnds in the country too so that's what I was saying just about trying to fight the best in the country and test yourself so it's a good match but I I never really I don't like the idea of of fighting like once every every like five six months I think like like I think you'd agree as well like almost you're just about that activity and about fighting as many as you can just to just to obviously get that experience but then again suppose you putting your your brain that's the risk of us yeah it's it's like pick like you said earlier picking the right fights at the right time and we have the shows to basically do it like there's well in November there's six shows in one month and there's three them on one day which I won't get into but yeah there's so much out there for you to experience there's so many like you said Banton weight is one of the step flyweights and Phantom weights at the minute it's kind of stacked in this country lightweights kind of coming back as well but there's so many fights out there does that excite you when you see these fights on these shows and you see Banton went and go I'd like to fight him like do you do you just study the game watch the game and watch your division 100% um just whenever I go to shows or if there's there's fights on like I'll just watch like a pay-per-view get the link and I like not watch it as a fan but like watch it like a study material um like I show a few weeks ago I was at and like me one of the other way like not like not to be like disrespectful or anything but it's like if if I had to fight them like how what would my Approach be like what do they do that I could like get the advantage on and stuff so I think this like we things they got like I think when it comes to like at the end of the day you are a martial artist like you should be studying your craft you know what I mean so and if there is a potential fight coming up with someone like why not have your homework done too yeah because it's the simple things they might do something all the time that you can pick up on that you could take advantage of you could see where they're good at where they're bad at where they can help you improve maybe on certain aspects of your game as well where you might feel you may be not I don't want to say weak but you know what I mean that you might need work on and and that fighting that person might help you so I like your whole kind of approach you're like you really really into studying it and just becoming a total Mar martial artist and that with the amount of shows hopefully next year they spread them out more but there there's gonna be plenty to come up but this this Sunday obviously at your how does it feel to be fighting on Dei show I find it really well-run show and how's it been dealing with Dei I've I was actually meant to fight on uh how do is it a you're you're I actually meant to fight on it preco um obviously Co happened then so never got a chance so this is actually my first time fighting on it but n dai's been 100% like everything's just like straight forward with him um like easy going so like like what more could a fighter want like especially whenever you have your whole you have your fight to deal with your W to deal with and stuff so can't wait to actually go around it too cuz um I've got a good Crow coming down with me as well um so wasn't B bad and how does it feel when you have like a crowd coming with you and traveling with you as a fighter does that like give you confidence in the cage or when you get in does everything just drown out uh I've got more like in the moment I think whenever it comes to that so like past couple of fights it's not like I'm looking for anyone but if I catch someone in my ey line like I'll just I'll see them and I put the hand up um but see with when it comes to the people like come to your fights and expand their money like as I've got older like I really appreciated that like a lot more because then the day people are giving up like their time number one and then obviously giving up money too but time's something they can't get back so like everybody who buys a ticket like I be like thankful that come down to actually just watch me fake like yeah know it is good because like that uh money can be tight for people and time like you said you can't get back once you give it something like and you seem very appreciative of it but I'm looking forward to see fight again in person I really enjoyed that fight in cage conflict and I was really glad I got the clip I wasn't adverted obviously but I'm going to be here this weekend I'm going to let you go is there anything you want to say before you go or anyone want to shout out and I want to thank you so much for your time because I do realize it's fight week and you're very busy uh just a couple of shout out to just a few sponsors to their competitions on Mac engineering on rocktown Australia um that's basically just a shout out but like appreciate you guys too for like doing what you do cuz he's he's helped grow the sport in the country and he's he's helped probably make exciting fights as well and putting a platform for for Fighters just to chat on and [ __ ] like that so really appreciate B like you as well no and I really appreciate the kind words and that's why I started to give people like cutting their teeth kind of going forward it helps me kind of do this sort of thing as well and I think he worked too hard and do too much work for it not to be covered you know the sort of way I think what you do is amazing like most people have jobs doing I'm sure it cost you money so it deserves to be covered but I can't wait to see you fight again in person and I will see you on Sunday thank you so much for your time I'm going to do a [ __ ] shout out to you to all the way in UDA as well I have to because the Train the train we're doing is unre and we're just all like in a good place like pushing each other on the daily so I'll shout it to him but he's there too perfect perfect and they'll be there with you by your side on Sunday and I will be cage side watching your fight and I can't wait yeah appreciate that thank you perfect
