Ross Quearney sits down at CMAC MMA in Blanchardstown with MMA In Depth to discuss his long path in amateur MMA. He says his first fight was around 2015 or 2016, that he fell in love with the sport the day he walked into the gym despite playing football as a kid, and that he later stepped away from competition after leaving school when mental pressure and personal struggles built up— including a 2016 Ireland team trial fight where he felt he did not want to be in the cage. During the break he still helped teammates prepare, came back around 2021 at Cage Legacy: Rising Stars Fighting Championship: Rising Stars Fighting Championship, and says COVID further reignited his motivation. At the time of the interview he has been selected for the Four Nations team heading to Liverpool the first weekend of July, alongside teammates Kikio and Jordan Bradshaw, and wants to push toward IMMAF and nationals. He plans to stay active after Liverpool, targeting a Cage Conflict bout with Rory Burke about two weeks after he returns, if healthy. He contrasts today’s stepped amateur scene—from novice levels up toward Bellator and 3Arena—with early four-man tournaments that mixed 16-year-olds with adults. He closes by praising coaches Alexander O'Sullivan and Deborah O’Sullivan as family who have given fighters everything they need over his eight or nine years at the gym.

okay so i'm in c mac here at ross courtney um you've been around for quite a while you came in and what year did you start fighting and why did you start fighting um i think in 2015 2016 was my first fight and we started fighting just i fell in love with it as soon as i came down here like and i've played football and what i supported as a younger kid or whatever but the day i walked in here like i've never left like and then i started nail was my passion as well well at this stage as well and that was my passion when i was younger like everyone would always be mentioning footballers and how this footballer has this left kick and we wouldn't have a clue just now the teams and if even like well now with floyd i was like we feel the same way about four years like now certain four years and one little technique that they have now so that's how we're going out with me passion like you know what i mean yeah you had a few fights then and then there was a bit of a break you're comfortable talking about why you took the break and then what reignited the fire to come back because you started quite a long time ago and you came back last year i believe a cage legacy wasn't it yeah so uh why the break and what reignited the flame to come back yeah so um when i left school i wasn't doing anything i wasn't walking wasn't going to college fighting was was majoring in like so we had two years of flaffy like and then um just started maybe putting much pressure on myself to wear too young with an age or whatever and so sorry i just fell apart with mental things and a lot of things i saw out with myself so i was spending a bit of time away from competition and i was always down here helping the lads prepare and help the ads improve like and then just especially since call over the last two years before i call over there was actually i was ready to come back like i was failing the foyer again like but then calvin happened the course and that was just an even bigger fire born and i mean now really you know and you've been selected for the four nations which is gonna be going on the weekend the first weekend in july um which is i'm really looking forward to how did it feel to be selected for something like that to represent your country on in this in a stage like that savage it feels good to be back here because actually one of my fights i fought in 2016 i was on trails for the owers team and i was standing in the cage that day and i remember just feeling like i don't want to be here like there's a hundred places that are out of bed and standing in this cage right now so that was sort of the start of things falling apart being there or whatever well here we are like five four five years later now and i'm on the other's team now and i really want to be here like so i know i'm in the right place at the right time now like yeah obviously two of your teammates have gone over kikio and jordan bradshaw so it'll be good to go over with them it'd be good to get that experience and have obviously you've seen at the super company there's quite a lot of bonding around with the team so that'd be a good experience for you which i say you're looking forward to do you want to push on and maybe go to ims will you compete in the nationals next year maybe to get on to the imap stuff like that of course yeah we've got a good look to compete everywhere and the only maps especially like um that's why that's way higher levels than what probably in terms of mental they are not away for five days fighting the best in the world from every country five days in a row and then there's one pro you're making weight a day before and it's a bit handier than that like so especially if you see him mohammad makayev how well he is the owner pro after all them have experiences within five days in a row the best of the best like it's the experience that you need it like there's no way there's no way around that there's no way under you have to go through it to get the universal over yeah you know then you get the experience of traveling to different places and the different scenarios you're going to be put in as a pro as well and like you said trying to stay away for five days that actually proves like your mental side as well i think to be able to do that for five days would be quite difficult so um do you have anything booked for after it or are you just concentrating on four nations and you'll start or if the foreign nations and then or you think over on cage conflict um actually want jordan bradshaw's former opponents and rory burke so we're looking forward to that one hopefully now things are i'm healthy after liverpool and i'll be able to take that one it's a i think it's two weeks after i'm back from liverpool but i'd be looking to fight as active as i possibly can if i'm not hurt like i want to get as much experience as possible now after all that time out like yeah and then obviously you start a long time ago the show seems to be very frequent now and there's a lot how do you feel about that coming back with that fire you've got a lot of places to potentially fight how does that make you feel as a fighter and and how much has it improved since since you started fighting oh so much the the level it's come up with so much when we first started like i was talking about earlier there was four man tournaments of 16 year olds mixed in with men and for it was crazy like all the others obviously all the experiences stand to us now like but the level it's at now like you have a stepping stone for every every level from someone getting in to just fail what competition feels like to someone getting having their force novice for you your first damage are free and there's the steps are everywhere up now to the high level prowess on bellator on the tree arena like there's a step in between everywhere there yeah i one wish you could look go forward into four nations and your next fight i actually look forward to watching compete i just want to ask you one more question as well what um when i say the names alexander sullivan and deborah o'sullivan as coaches what does that mean to you what do they mean to you as people oh that's family family family up here i'm here knowing eight or nine years i think and like we want to be loyal to them too for today they've given us everything they've given us every tool that we need to succeed and become better people and make it out of this place in blanchestown you know what i mean there's not much going on here people only ever make it out with football or maybe singing rarely fighting but they've they've given us the tools to make a living they're serious living fighting like and i always be thankful to the children father and they do sound much for us they like everyone everyone appears man dialec they look after everything match for eats look after the gym look after the white coats they're everything in one lick so we're like a big family up here and they mean absolutely everything to everyone here yeah that's the feeling i've been getting from everyone from the gym i've talked to alex myself so i want to wish you the best of luck in your future fights and if you ever need anything yeah give me a chance pleasure to meet you thank you
