thank you welcome to episode 2 of the podcast combat confidential today is a great episode it's a great conversation I have with the front good friend of mine Naomi Connolly Naomi is an animal we both competed in the Winter Warrior program season seven now it's train Alta and Naomi has just never stopped she's competed in several finale and has done brilliantly has never taken a day off even though if you look at Instagram she travels a lot and I'm highly jealous of that but we get to talk to her about her upcoming fight which unfortunately is now in the past uh May 6th we get to talk to her about how she's been training preparing Camp would you training with I get her Insight on how she feels about Combat Sports in general how she came to it what Drew her to it while she stuck with it uh and then we came to hear about her moving from South Africa she moved here she was 14. it's such an interesting story and I got to hang with you to talk a little bit about it in this show also we get to hear an interesting story of Naomi and her husband their time in Thailand so make sure you stick around check it out here we go three two one and where are we go go go go go go go go so all right we're back common confidential again I have my friend here miss Connolly Naomi the annihilator how you doing today good the crap weather out today I feel like everyone forgets to how to drive in the rain in a country where it rains 50 of the time you know yeah so um yeah you got a fight coming up I'm sure you're excited for that right yeah two weeks unfortunately this will be coming out after that but uh so yeah you can give me all your inside tips you know you can give me your game plan I'm looking forward to that now so I've been training training very hard yeah twice a day maybe how do you find that time can't work uh I find training in the morning a lot easier for me okay then I do I just want to have more energy for the rest of the day so I wake up at 10 past five um yeah for the breakfast go training at six come home get the kids ready for school get the kids to school good work you'll never have them back I'm training um and yeah I just find it it's easy to train early on in the day than I do in the evening because once I train in the evening I do be staring at the ceiling before I was going to bed so yeah I'm the same exact way I just like everything's going you're feeling kind of hyped up and it's difficult to turn it off even though like I would be up late anyway generally it's it's not the it's different no I even find it hard to watch a TV program in the evening really if I go to bed late then it just messed up my whole resume for the week yeah just time training and then it's just not going to fact so yeah especially with your training yeah absolutely yeah so I just want to keep to before 10 o'clock police going to bed yeah which is hard sometimes because you don't even get to sit on the couch like absolutely TV program but you know especially coming up to a fighting has to be done yeah absolutely it's odd uh it's hard to discipline yeah for sure yeah so uh how you find in this Camp then do you know what the funny thing is that I feel like I've been on the camp since I've actually started this really yeah well yeah yeah to be fair like I need time I hear anything about Naomi she's got another fight or something about like he always got something going on yeah I've done seven now in since I started a year and a half ago wow yeah so we're enjoying it I just always want to have something booked I always want to have something to work towards you know whether it's just Jiu Jitsu competition or a fight I just find it's if I have a focus there you know it's much easier to get the discipline in and to to get up and yes 5am in the morning absolutely that's something that I ask you that's kind of what I did where I wanted to I tried to do as many competitions as possible with the idea of I have to train because I have to compete yeah exactly so otherwise it's just uh I don't know you're not really yeah you know either something you're training for exactly you know yeah you're not just doing it for the hell of it no exactly yeah you know I'm looking forward to this one now so yeah so you're uh what do you know about your opponent um have you met her before I have yeah yeah okay yeah um we're bump into each other a few times actually there um just a different fighting story yeah but um yeah I'm looking looking forward to to sharing the page of those stuff yeah we're good it'll be interesting I'm really hoping to try and get up there to uh yeah very least we're wearing your uh your bike gear Wolverine fighter yeah check it out um yeah I'm really hoping to get up there uh it's it's gonna be it it's gonna be strained I'm comp I think yes yeah so at very least I will I'll be watching it from home it's called millennium but it's a great kind of like okay what's the what's the promotion uh chaos chaos yeah who else is fighting have you gotten the fight card um the fight card is out yeah okay we had a glance of it now but um there seems to be a good few points at the whole place is being sold out as well really going on tickets and it was quite a big I think it holds like a thousand people or something oh wow yeah very good yeah so where are you at on the car no pressure um oh I'm not too sure I think because it's also grappling so okay um because you can just grabbed us first um within the teens and then they usually go for the girls okay so not right away yeah yeah yeah with an ultra fight where you would be like co-main yeah um your first one uh that was in Belfast for uh there's a clan wars or no um that was for cage something that's yeah that's right and that was I wasn't too thrilled with that ending I think they stopped that way too quickly I know yeah but I mean it happened I mean it is what it is you know but uh I would have I would have liked to have a bit more of a scrap than occasion I don't think yeah absolutely especially when you train yourself yeah sure that's okay so just kind of you got your start in MMA Jiu Jitsu like that's new to you and that was kind of brought on by Alton correct or yes basically uh I'll explain how I actually got into the gym originally was I I was actually going through a bit of a bad patch in my in my life okay so my husband said look why don't we do some exercise or you know find something to do so we ended up because we worked together and we ended up after lunchtime just going and doing like um we had a PT in SVG and just do work oh okay yes yeah so we used to go to lunchtime two of us used to work hard together and I always used to sit there and watch the weights are there and The Masks are very nice and watch all these people fighting and rolling and not really even paying attention to what I was doing you know yeah I was like I can do that I know I can do that and it just it just completely crossed my eye and then Andrew Brandon said to me once he goes and he's like why are you doing weights when you can get a workout and be punching people in the face I was like that means absolute sense you know I mean like it just it just sounded brilliant um and then Lorna had um introduced The Altar we just wanted to worry at the time yeah to me and I think the first time she said it I didn't I was intrigued but I didn't I didn't sign up and then it was the next session which was season seven that we did yeah that's I as I love just going for it just pay it and once is that that's done it's done do you have no other option that Journey so that's probably the best things I ever did yeah yeah it was one of the hardest things that I've ever done besides getting into a cage was actually going to that induction okay um especially when you don't know anybody and you know you know yourself and it's but then you find that everyone's there for the same same kind of did you on that first day did you kind of we did you get there early I did I was so I'm ridiculously punctual okay and he's listening to us that knows me but I'm just like I wish I had 10 minutes before something and just sit there and wait yeah I mean like um except for the day this traffic so yeah I did and I sat there and again the 10 minutes sitting in the car waiting to go in was like an hour like an hour are you trying to talk yourself out of it no no I just I like pump yourself up quite a cop um competitive person okay and I love a challenge yeah if I see someone doing something I'll be like I want to try that maybe give me let me have a shout out there and even on the day like I gave my my all I'm not a very thinner was not a very cardio fitted person okay so that induction was I was like whoa and it's going to be like within 20 weeks you know so um but I didn't loved it I just I just continued dying um yeah so you just you started a fell in love with it yeah and now Naomi's out here trying to fight everybody so you fought twice in one night with like a 15 minute break in between and then on top of that the second person she was but 10 kilos heavier than you yeah that stuff man that's but you know what it's during this whole the reason why I've got so many opportunities to fight the mod that I have is because it's very hard to get anybody to find anybody my weight okay 53 kg Mark um your shoes yeah but uh so for all the majority of the places they found that for somebody else's finale for Ulta or I'm sorry whatever they couldn't find anybody so they'd ask me did I want to fight to step in yeah to step in and on that particular night the reason when I was getting my hands Rafters when they asked me did I want to fight yeah because the girl the second girl's opponent pulled out and you asked me that question I'm going to say yes absolutely he didn't get to finish the sentence and I said yes but also for the girl that didn't get to fight she's trained that whole 20 weeks actually she's not going to get that opportunity and she's there dressed ready ready to go you know what I mean so I kind of like I fell for her in that way as well um in hindsight probably not a good idea but um but look you didn't sustain much damage or anything did you um no well no not really I did I did have a bit of a bump in my head oh yes yeah that's right which actually had me not being able to computer fight them for the suspended time what it is of 29 days yeah um but so I mean I got to fight twice more nights and and you know so I I really enjoyed that that's awesome yeah so he did Ulta you know you're starting on your your amateur career and you had you've had one fight so far you have another one coming up like Okay so I I know they never ask or say you should never ask but how old are you you're 37. okay where do you think where are you trying to take this are you just trying to you know see where the road goes or yeah do you have a plan I'm 37 probably in like a 25 year old's mind yeah so yeah I mean so I for me I have so much time in my hands the way I'm thinking I mean you see some of the most best skilled and most professional female Fighters these days are in their 40s yeah so I felt good time to go away it's going to take me I've I found that I picked this up quickly I learn fast and if I've done several fights in a year and a half why where else can I go with this do you mean how much how much more could I learn in another year and a half yeah I mean so I'm just at the moment I'm just I'm just trying to learn as much as I can get as much skill and as much time in the cage and much time on the maths even in competitions um and just see what it takes me baby yeah yeah it's awesome that's it's it's a good I like to have you know just kind of see what happens great so obviously you're not from here you're like you're like me you're you're blowing like myself yeah so from South Africa from South Africa in Cape Town yeah Granddad was originally from Donegal really yeah okay you know he lived in South Africa since he was 18 um what brought him to South Africa um hey that's that's why I'm here yeah um but even though myself my dad my brother my mom used to come back and forth fast and I have to go to Ireland ever since I think it was about 10. okay um so at the age of 14 my dad just said look I want to see Irish citizens we have the passports and let's just move which is great um at the time my dad actually gave myself and my brother an option he had a job he got a job proposal in New Zealand and he got one and Ireland and he said to us where do you where do you think we should live oh well so um which is good um I have now my husband and five boys so yeah and yes we just come back and forth a lot on holidays and we just moved over um how old were you when you moved here 14 14 yeah yeah so I finished my um yeah what's South Africa like three years ago now what's South Africa like 23 really so 2000 99 2000 yeah okay just tell me about South Africa I've never been to the continent before I've always wanted to go Lucy I to me I still have stuff in my head as a 14 year old yeah because I've only ever gone back twice on holidays really yeah uncles and everything they all come over here now okay so I don't have any need to really go back as much I like to go back when my youngest is a little bit older okay um but when I lived there it was nothing like it is now you know it used to be a case of I used to come home and when the street lights came on do you know I can't wear like just like playing um beautiful country went to the beaches all the time nearly after school all the time um great holiday spots over there it was just I've never really felt unsafe at all over there um be very cautious now everyone back now but yeah obviously like that that's I mean I guess it's all the stories I've heard are always been the opposite yeah you know it's not not that it's like dangerous dangerous but it's you know it's certainly a country like you have to have it with the voucher oh definitely yeah I'm sure it's like the walk down the wrong Street in anywhere in Ireland you know if it's if you shouldn't really be there yeah um you know you could get told yeah yeah but um no I never ever passed um it was a great place to uh it was we actually went to um which I found quite strange when I came over here I was in a mixed school over there okay um growing up ever um so over here coming over to all goal school that was very big change for me especially at the age of 14 where you know you're just coming into like your adolescence and everybody is kind of finding themselves and I came smack bang in the little love I couldn't really find where I was supposed to fit okay because even going up in South Africa I was friends with the more nerdy people and I was friends with more popular people do you know what I mean so coming over here I did find that I got I bullied quite fat really over here yeah yeah it was I used to come home kind of like black and blue really my mom used to be like is everything okay and I used to kind of just try and hide it or not not let her know um but I'm sure I've always had that kind of white mentality in me okay I've never used to start a fight but everyone came out of me I'm not back again either so um yeah there was one but I I just found out I've always had that kind of fight or flight in sick but it was more fight I think okay yeah yeah that's that's fascinating just so like what what is it uh is there anything about South Africa that you kind of miss my assumption is you've only been there twice since I know so well there it is after food definitely really um but also in my head because as a 14 year old I'm sweet like yeah you know the different kinds of like sweets there's there's laughing shops all over the place that I just buy sometimes buy stuff from yeah um another thing that I really miss is Builder which is like what is it your equivalent of beef jerky oh yeah yeah okay you can get that over here as well anyway but it's just just little kind of like memories and stuff like that you know um definitely being able to get up and just go to the beach whenever he's a Cape Town New York right is it is that is it uh was it wind blinded rock or they have like a big there's a YouTuber I follow and his his partner's family is from there from that area yeah you get to worry about sharks yeah again because I know like South Africa is known for the white sharks but as I mean you know yourself the younger you are the more I was in jail but the more kind of like Fearless you are okay not one I like I used to jump into the sea all the time and not have to worry about what's underneath me now if I jump into the ocean and it's all dark I'm like oh yeah I don't I don't even I don't I don't like large bodies of water yeah specifically I don't know what's down there yeah you know I'll stick to a pool I can it's six feet deep I can reach that no I just um sharks are no well I have to worry about them but in my head I was just like no it's ever a time where like growing up where you heard about someone or oh yeah yeah oh wow yeah okay I think they manage them a lot better now in terms okay yeah yeah yeah and then the gnats they use naps there as well in certain zones um I think that's all for the tides and stuff like that yeah okay that's good do you speak anything other than English then do you speak like Africans or something yeah between English and Afrikaans it's you're nearly bilingual in both okay so you would have like an English family and then you would have an Afrikaans family and Afrikaans would be their first language and English would be their second okay uh whereas for me it's my first language is English and Afghanistan but my mom is Afrikaans okay so even though you you'd be both as kind of fun angle in in Perth or it is equal in both languages um but I again I'm still at 14 years old I can understand it yeah completely but and I can still hold the conversation okay um but it's it's just at a basic level yeah right yeah do you ever run into anyone from South Africa here [Music] really yeah but not but not anybody that I actually know okay yeah although I do have an American friend that lives here there's another one the wind's over to America I've been speaking to somebody from South Africa they knew me from South Africa really small world fun it's awesome what are your do you know Dean Warren they're awesome but they're like they're they're crazy yeah no you don't taste the music that I actually grew up in with the system the music I grew up with in Africa was um the course and of course Brian Kennedy oh yeah yeah UB40 and all that kind of things the old CD players where you open up the the back of her belief and they have all the words well yeah it was Irish music that I listened to Irish bands you do you teach your kids what you know like in um Afghans or no not really no never use uh what I do like is when if my mom ever comes over to the house if I want to say something I don't want the kids know I'll speak to her enough okay I don't know what we're saying that's cool yeah no I don't it doesn't go as far as eating them um are they do they do they practice at all at the gym or are they kind of at home or I really want to get actually my nine-year-old should really get into it because his arm is when you try and onboard him on the opposite side kind of hyper extended you have a my sister-in-laws like that freaks me out yeah that's weird you'd be great I think there should be nothing happening yeah your kid do you have five boys five boys here what's the age range so the age range is big gap between the now so it's 20 and then ten no sorry twenty twenty twenty twenty twenty you have a 20 year old get out of here um so 20 12. that's why I only ever see five or four in a picture okay all right sorry twenty twelve ten uh six and four don't ask me their names our birthdays yeah how do they feel about Mom stepping into cages and fighting people yeah do you know what it's um [Laughter] yeah no they do they do think it's cool I'd like to actually bring them to one of my advice I'd find that I will probably do very good that day yeah yeah especially if I actually I bought them to do my first Jujitsu competition oh really yeah when was that um that oh God I'd say probably about like seven months ago oh okay ish yeah um I think that was nice because I I didn't didn't want that again it was one of those where I was put into a category with some tank headings heavier than me oh really yeah because you know if you're not stuff but yeah yeah um but it was great for them to see the kind of preparation training the going to that and that winning isn't always everything yeah I mean um so it was great because they they videoed me and they've got them little chairs behind it so that was cute to say that's awesome yeah no I I'd like to to my next Jiu Jitsu competition or just for any of them in general I'd like to bring mine but I mean they're still too young to really even comprehend kind of what's going on yeah but uh no that's awesome and then so your husband as well obviously he's a bit like he was kind of the one I don't say to introduce you but like even you went to SBG together and then you know how is he he just couldn't understand I think when I said I was going to sign up for the program that was 20 weeks long and I'll be getting up at like 5 a.m in the morning to go for six and he was like how's this gonna work yeah you know so I actually gave the old ways in that I knew I wanted to do this that much that I would make it work yeah so with anything that came up in case of what happens if I need if he said I have to go to work I'd say half six in the morning then I'll say about it then I'll pay extra for the child might just come over earlier okay then I could do it do you know what I mean so I had it in my head that this is something that I was going to do and there was nothing I was going to stop me from from doing that um he even said there's a few times where he'd like roll over the bed and kick we like try to feel it from there and you'd be like geez it's not there you know so yeah I'd be gone already um so he does think of a bit nuts yeah no at the moment especially because I continued in the training errors themselves um that's what I was saying I always feel like I'm an account because I've been I haven't really started as either training every day or twice a day um I got some going on holidays or anything like that um yes it is strenuous because again I'm going to bed early in the evenings we're not really getting the time that we really shared with each other um so I've tried to balance everything between family work and then the whole training um can't be a bit tricky sometimes yeah yeah we're making it work yeah that's awesome so recently you were in Thailand yes yeah so that's awesome because like I that's my dream to yeah well I'd like to go for like six months yeah and just do a full intense yeah yeah so you were there for what two three weeks no it wasn't I was actually only there I travel I was traveling for nine days and I trained for five it was the most really that was it was the most I could get okay okay yeah so um yeah so take them with you next time is going on a family holiday yeah because every day that you know I I find that now um if we go if my wife and I are planning a holiday um you know where do you want to go like I hold on and then like Google gyms around there yeah yeah like all right yeah we can go there or it's like yeah you know maybe we'll go here instead and yeah we just came back on family holiday to um from Spain and I packing my suitcase about animals two kind of carry-ons and it must have been two different people going on holidays all my holiday stuff and then last suitcase with my gloves my gum Shield my you know different sizes I've actually Googled that MMA gym over there and contact them and say look you know with the best intentions of going obviously yeah no no he once got over there with holiday mode yeah but um but it is always something I'm thinking about because then I always feel like I'm missing out on training or you know even terms of Fitness a few days off and I'm back to square one it's not even like you know it's it's like you know it's something we both know I mean you enjoy doing right so it's like uh it keeps you sane yeah I mean it's like you're doing something that you enjoy doing on a holiday so like it's it's the holiday version of what you enjoy doing yes you know that's that's how I look at it and then uh I like going to new gyms and just seeing how they're training people yeah you know and then either if I do really well in there you know I come out feeling great or if uh you know they they stop me then uh you know I you know I know I need to really need to keep going you know sorry uh so back to back to Thailand so you're trying for five days five days seems nothing but in that heat and when you're training for four hours a day so two in the morning two in the afternoon actually with one hour in the in the afternoon that I did so it was two hours it was two hours of my time one hour of MMA and then two hours of my time as well yeah yeah what uh where'd you go was it uh yeah okay okay um it was good now it is the only thing is though I had to try and climatize with the jet lag then you start training by the time you actually nearly get used stuff two three weeks would have been absolutely perfect um but again it was there a couple other SPG folks over there I think around the same time I don't know if they were at AKA or not the other guys from the gym Jerry was there and yeah when I left one of the other girls just came and came over so it seemed to be kind of seems to be very popular for anybody going over there wants to try and try and improve the skills yeah that's awesome yeah and it's good like I learned a lot um I learned a lot uh over there um and everything so there was also Jiu Jitsu classes that we're doing over there to do yoga they do they're made the Mito yeah um what'd you do when you're off time just hang on the beach just chill yeah all right but yeah it's trained up four hours a day I probably don't have much energy for anything else yeah I'm gonna come back um but have you been to Thailand before I have actually yeah yeah I've been twice um funny story won't get into it but we always get into it honey get out of here yeah I know stuff I got eventually got him I don't have to pay the money yeah kind of an ATM put on how much was your husband worth I'm curious I think it's only like 5 000 bucks which is like 200 queso what that's it keep him okay seriously yeah holy he was okay it was yeah it was so funny because I remember you I need to get him in here the first time he's like now you know this could be a bit dangerous so don't don't get too drunk on the first night and he gets he's the one that gets sick I need to know some circumstances here what happened how didn't um we kind of lost each other at one stage during the night okay I kept bringing them did eventually bring him somebody got on the phone was talking and said um you need to come get your husband um we haven't and basically some guy said oh I I'll I know I I know where he is I'll be okay so I kind of like with all right so I'm going to stop you and don't come with him he's been listening to a conversation this whole time I do you're panicking um so I eventually asked the chap can you do you mind coming with me um I'll pay you to come with me so just translate what's happening here so he did anyway we drove 20 minutes across Fun Park as well wow um we eventually got there it's a real life hangovers we were going to go out there um the guy who just said I could see him sitting there and I definitely did say that he tried to get away in these pockets all ripped and I actually I was holding on to the money that night because of the handbag and everything yeah so they just say good and then take the money so they took my name once I calculated my head yeah it's fine it's like all right fine just let's get this over with yeah wow yeah it was quite scary in Afghanistan I bet yeah it's a funny story too that's intense yeah yeah did you have kids at that time or like yes or how old were they three of the three yeah so they're only like two and five do they know the story or will you share this with yeah oh wow that's great that's great but it clearly didn't deter you from going back yeah um I I did find it a bit strange when we went over um well when I went over there now to train people were leaving like their helmets on the bikes and keys alien in the bikes yeah you know there was no nobody's taken receiving anything over there so yeah it is like it is relatively safe enough country yeah it is like yeah yeah but I think like when I think when it goes bad there it tends to yeah very quickly yeah like how I did they like did they hurt them do they no I think they just try to when you try to run off they had ripped his pockets and everything trying to find money and just saw him down you know it was done in a very non-suspicious way oh really so they were under the radar so it wasn't like I think we didn't call the police yeah I was just happy just to get him back and leave her there so basically I just it was a they try to Rob him he didn't have anything yeah so call somebody we want money yeah okay yeah yeah advice wow that's great so you travel a lot I was like yeah we kind of we do enjoy going with family holidays more um as much as well as much as we can but I mean we do work quite hard we have a family business um which is stressful most of the time so whenever we get a chance to yeah that's good what uh what is your family business uh it's a stereo and doll Manufacturing Company um just make staircases for divide once in one of thousands so yeah interesting who are your coaches who are your main coaches at the moment at the moment I'm I'm doing three mornings a week with Shane Mullen yep so that's going really well yeah we're working on kind of power book and ground work and positions and stuff like that and then I do the 11 o'clock then on the pro sessions every day try together any day yeah um and then if I count in the evenings um I'll try to get one too during the star or um how do you find train with the pros it's like there's a there's a couple women in there yeah there is yeah yeah yeah there is um it's intense yeah um you get humbled very quickly oh yeah are learning a hell of a loss yeah um and it's great you're in the perfect place to be learning as well yeah just yeah I I say this a lot but it's because I truly mean it like the the sheer amount of talent that runs through there it's it's unreal you know and yeah and I I think like Ireland in general I think is lucky to have you know all these people that represent Ireland you know and it it's you know between you know John Kavanaugh's coaching um yeah and then yeah the part is oh man it's it's an absolute it's a college education you're getting um you know by training there and that that's I yeah I think that's awesome and anyone who gets in there and trying to go you know like the likes the Johnny Walker's massive yeah you know huge human you're you're in the training um the pros uh pretty much every day I try yeah yeah um I was like yeah so I said to myself just please just give me one year just give me one year of me training as much as I can and whenever I can just just one year to be able to try and get into that that session um and then if I don't that's fine just like to try to get in with the okay and they said right okay fine so I did I trained my ass off um and then what I finally did he's like well now what let me come back [Laughter] but no it is it's such a it is such a different kind of learning experience you get um training with them yeah is there is there anyone that like you kind of like look up to in the sport okay or I mean is there anyone in particular that kind of gives you inspiration to like you know I'd like to achieve that or no I I actually remember this one moment where I I was when I was doing okay before I actually started the gym and Sinead Kavanaugh was in there and I was it was one that moment I was looking I was like I can do that oh you know I'm sure I'm pretty sure that I can I can fight like they can you know um I think I was watching at that time it was I was watching the Alters train okay yeah and um what was inventory then eventually he was just like just join the gym you know as well so it's like okay but no definition of Governor is somebody that's um no there's a lot of you know I like I I now that I at the 11 o'clock session I get to learn a little bit from everybody okay everyone has their own unique style everybody has their own a little technical information that they'll give you when they're training and it's just like instead of as you go out of there and like my mind is like racing because I've just learned so much yeah from different people and just try to put those scenarios over in my head and kind of like picture myself doing that or you
