Fansview MMA host Dave interviews Jordan Scully ahead of his amateur bout against Sam Simon at Your Fighting Championship on the coming Sunday. Scully describes a nearly one-year layoff after a freak shoulder injury that was slated to precede a fight with Jess Paulo; he says the setback hit him mentally more than physically, though Thurles physios helped restore his shoulder without surgery and he was physically able to train again within about three months. Other issues during the year kept him out until he returned at Premier and lost to Malik, a fight he attributes mainly to rushing a takedown while he was doing well on the feet. He praises Simon’s comeback from long injuries and says he wants hard fights at amateur level. In fight week he reports a strong cut toward lightweight, helped by Sharpshooter on Instagram and coach Peter Quigley, including roughly 5.5 kilos lost over two and a half weeks and an early weigh-in around 72 kg. He trains at a busy gym alongside Conor McCarthy, Paul Fitzgerald, Alex K, Dow Harrison, and others, and plans IMMAF at the end of the month at lightweight plus an active 2024 with possible rematches.

[Music] perfect so I'm here with Mr Jordan Scully H he's gonna be fighting uh this weekend on your Fighting Championship in a fantastic fight against Sam Simon um he came back at the last Premier show um he was out for a year before that so we're gonna talk a little bit about what happened to him why he was out for so long how he felt coming back and then and looking forward so thank you very much for your time how are you it's good to see you back after you were out for I think it was nearly a year day nearly exactly a year from when yeah your last fight to the fight back at Premier so how are you feeling I feel great I've uh I've been training hard the last couple of months you know even while I was injured I was you know I still trying and doing whatever I could but know I'm just I'm delighted to be back you know and I just I just want to showcase what I can do you know what Jordan Scully can do you know so I just I'm looking forward to it Dave yeah we're looking forward to it's very good to have you back cuz I remember at the time when you did get that injury it was you and Jess poo and I remember at the time everyone was like this is the fight to make this is the fight to make and obviously it went the way it did and you were out for so long obviously um when you did realize you were going to be injured and out for a long time how did that affect you because you had been quite active and always have been quite active as a competitor I looked I uh I could sit here and say I was good but I won like there was a period of time where I did kind of go to a bad State of Mind like I uh I was in a low point in my life I like I didn't know if I was going to fight again or not you know and uh you know well I never stopped believing in myself like even In fairness to the physios in toore they got me back like going again as you can see shoulders 100% and uh yeah know I I think what kept me going the most was just like the dream I had like you know obviously wanting to go to the UFC and stuff like you know doing the best I can but what really helped me the most was my family the people close to me like even some people will tell you like I I never stopped believing myself and I think that's what pushed me to keep going yeah like that you're an unbelievable talents like that at the time said you were the two top guys um and you said there that you thought you might not fight again was it that the injury was that bad that you might not been able to fight again or was that a mental thing I think it was more of a mental thing Dave cuz I know like I never broke a ball or anything before like and it was just it was just such a freak accident you know you don't know what's going to happen like you know you might I was even thinking would my arm ever be the same again like could I step into the cage is this the end for me but you know I was very I was very blessed like you know just I didn't actually need surgery on it or anything after which was very good and it turns out it actually did heal in the space of three months to like I was able getting up here again and stuff but a few other things happened during the year as well that kind of prevented me from fighting which was unfortunate but look these things happen for a reason and I think that's what made me into the man I am today yeah and like that all these all these obstacles and all these things that happened to you like said will mold who you are in the future and they might they might not feel good or great at the time but when you look back on them you'll say well this was a point where this happened and and that's kind of changed me but you did come back and you did fight um when you did get into the cage after so long were you worried then about your shoulder or was you knew it was 100% or like was there any caution going in and how did you feel going back in after so long to be honest I it was the best feeling in the world obviously look the fight didn't go my way like I just made a few silly mistakes that was it I think it was maybe maybe look a bit of ring rust but you can't take anything away from Malik he did put in a great performance and uh you know he deser the win he was the better man in the night and I can't take anything away from him yeah and like that which like that with your mistake that you said you made when you fight what do you do after fight do you analyze the fight and see where you went right and where you went wrong and where to improve and obviously your coaches would do that for you but is that something you would do yourself looking back and saying I should have done this here oh of course they can taken down notes especially just see like right what can I do for the next time to make sure that never happens again it's like obviously in the fight I think the biggest mistake was just kind of rushing to get the takedown I was like I have to get the takedown even though when I was on the feet I was actually doing very well against Malik it was just I think it was more of a case like rushing oh I have to get the take down now even though I could have just bu my time and then eventually to take that one to came but look it's only aure at the end of the day I'm here to learn from my mistakes and uh you know move on we get better yeah like that like you said I've seen that with some Fighters that they do really well on the feet and then they go for a takedown I'm like why are they going for a takedown but obviously it's obiously we've seen how dominant you can be in those positions and that's probably where you're most comfortable but like you said you were doing quite well on the feet maybe you should have stayed there like you said and then it opens up naturally but uh you like said you learn from that but did you feel any ring rust or like everyone talks about Ring rust and not being in there did you feel any of that did you feel like different going in or was it just the same just a year apart I look D it's say the year I like could have played a part I don't know but like like I said before I can't take anything away from Malik like he was out long as well and like look he was the better man in the night and I can't take anything away from him he deserved the win that day and yeah it's just it's just how it goes sometimes yeah like that once you learn from every fight that you have an amre whether you win or lose that's the main thing and and like that you will fight anybody and the fight you've got coming up this weekend is one that really really excites me it's a really really good fight he's someone who's actually had injury he was actually out for eight years within it with two injuries H Sam was so he knows all about what you've kind of gone through so talk to us about this fight how excited for you are are you for it because I'm very excited ah Dave you know I just I I can't even put it into words I'm just I can't wait to go out there just you know showcase what I can do and like a fighter s caliber Sam's caliber as well you know like I don't want the easy fights I want the hard fight Sam's a great fighter I know his brother Solomon well as well he's another amazing fighter and uh like you were saying about Sam his story is inspirational as well like I heard about his injury and stuff for him to come back win two belts like he did is very good so look I just want to test myself fight the best Lads out there possible because you know who wants an easy fight like you should be taking any fight that's offered to you out there that's just my opinion yeah it should be because like that especially at amateur the best should just fight the best because just say you've got two top amateurs like accent here in the locker on they fought I'd rather they fight amateur get that experience then meeting early in Pro and then the loss on the pro career is a lot more than the loss on the amateur careers and all the sort of way so do it all at amateur but um in regards to the weight cut how's the weight cut going how are you feeling it's fight week I D the W Cut's going extremely well and I have to give a big shout out to Sharpshooter on Instagram they've been a huge help in terms of my nutrition my way cut you know I I'm actually weigh in at like 72 s earlier so you know I'm nearly there like and I don't I don't feel weak or anything I I feel gray even though like the CAU out like the carbs the Sal and stuff I feel amazing even feel like I could fight tonight you know that's right because you usually fought obviously at the higher weight classes so yeah as we coming down is it a big wake up or has this been a gradual thing over time to get your walking around weight down to come to this weight no to be honest there right I think I've always kind of been a light way I just I think maybe it was just with the diet I was probably overeating and that but like even in my last fight I was looking I was like you know what I could definitely fight lighter like I just need to eat a bit less and I'm all good you know like i' I've been cutting down with when I've CAU wet just kind of reducing my food the past two and a half weeks and I lost 5.5 kilos just from you know eating a bit less wow that's just that just shows the that just shows the difference in the discipline though doesn't it that you know there there's another L I have to give credit for as well Peter quy he said it to me as well he goes Jordan you can definitely make lightweight it's a better weight class for you like you know and obviously you know Peter he's fought for World titles and everything obviously knows what he's talking about so whatever he's going to say I'm going to listen to him you know he's my coach yeah and then like obviously you see Conor McCarthy made his Pro deut there you've got some really good guys into him what's it like being around in that gym especially with Conor just making his Pro debut and the way he done it as well I say the gym is absolutely buzzing because there's so many good Fighters there Dave I can't even describe to you like the level in that gym is just it's unbelievable like just you know you see ncol win on C Legacy as well he he's the only L who could probably do submissions like that you know you look at other amateurs they probably won't be able to do what he can so he's another good lad there's obviously young Alex K he's an open coming he's a very good round for me as well Conor McCarthy Paul Fitzgerald as well well look even though despite he has more losses on his record the record doesn't actually show how good Paul is and I have to give Paul credit he's been given me some deadly rounds the past few months since I've been up in this even a dow Harrison as well another dog yeah they're they're all really really good guys and like that Paul FY like said his record doesn't show actually his level because Paul is actually really good and I think there was two splits in that that he lost as well that could have went either way and then I last fight he just got caught got winded he like Alex hit him a good shot but other than that his fighter entertaining that's why I like Paul goes out and he just and then his post on Instagram Entertainer then as well um he's a mad man but he's really nice I always talk to him when see at shows and I always have chats with him as well but you look you look at him on Instagram you're like oh this L's an absolute and then you meet him in person like this guy is dead on you meet me like this guy's actually like dead such a nice guy as well fuing but like Paul just like that though he's like he's a mad B like part of gold as well you know yeah no I I find because obviously I I've never I'm never gonna have to fight him or never will fight him or I haven't fought him so me and him have a good relationship and like that I know he was supposed to be fighting on EUR I think his his fighter is now fighting oin so I don't know if is Paul still on the Paul actually has been unfortunate just the past few months he actually got staff in a few times I think the fact that he has he's a type one diabetic as well doesn't help so he's not going to be fighting till the summer he put it up on his Instagram actually if you want to check it out he uh he basically said he's just going to give his immune system a rest and uh he said he'll definitely fight in the summer I feel for him as well because he trains hard and obviously he's he has to kind of take it back a bit you know and no fighter ever wants to do that I know what that's like with the shoulder it's not easy mentally as well but he'll get through it yeah no cuz I see I see in someone had told me like he'll be in there for the classes and he'll stay there until they close the gym is why yeah know just hitting the bag or hitting the pads like you know Paul yeah no so obviously we're not going to look past Sam because he's the next person in front of you but how do you plan this year on going do you want to do the imass again do you want to fight more reasy like how active do you want to be this year God with I'm actually doing I'm actually doing the imfs at the end of the month I'm moving down to lightweight as well for that cuz I'm walking around fairly late nowadays so I have a big plan of fights I want to do the penally this year even rematches with certain opponents I fought before like you know we'll wait and see but to be honest I just want to be as active as I can now that depends on how much like let's say damage I take but so far I just want to stay active and you know I'll fight anyone you know what I mean like I'm not afraid of a challenge and look no matter how the result go I fuing find a man in the night or if he's a man in the night it's just how it goes but I just want to stay as active as I can yeah no that's good because obviously you were quite active we've seen before then you had the long break and you talked about how hard that was but I seen at the time on your Instagram and stuff you were still in there slinging you were still throwing the other one you were still doing as much as you could which just showed that you want no matter what was going on you were still going to get back in there and you you finally got back in you've got this fight you've got obviously now the IM mask coming up then you've got just this year as well so how good does it feel to be back now and knowing that you've got a full year ahead of you I did fantastic like I just I just want to showcase what Jordan Scully can do you know and then the first fight is obviously Sam like I master as well but Sam is my main focus at the moment and I have a tough challenge ahead of me but if anyone can do it I know I can do it so yeah I just I can't wait to Showcase what I can do yeah I can't wait to see you back because obviously it's been obviously other than Premier it been a while I'd seen you quite active before that I always enjoyed your fights and your style you would like you said about talking damage you don't take much damage because your style if you get people down you you tend to keep them down um yeah but I can't wait to see this fight it's actually a really intriguing fight I think um it's going to be good to see you to see you again in person I know I met you at I think it was the cage Legacy wasn't it I met you at but yeah I was shatting you there for a few minutes I remember yeah so it's going to be good to to see you back in the cage at your fighting championship against a really really good opponent I'm going to let you go but is there anything you want to say before you go or anyone you want to shout out before you go obviously my my jsg Sharpshooter on Instagram Peter quy Conor McCarty another thing as well Connor was a huge reason why I decided to join this as well he was very welcoming to me you know you know Connor is the kind of guy he is very nice to me you know introducing me to everyone Peter not so I I'd obviously give him a big shout out because he was one of the main reasons why I joined the gym yeah Conor mcari is probably Mr Nice Guy of MMA behind stepen wonder by Thompson Connor is just the nicest person you'll ever come not when he's not when he's in the cage no no he's it's just it's like it just switches but like that when I done an MMA de with him that's what he said he wants to change the perception of MMA and the people that compete in it because of the way he is of his demeanor he's just such a nice guy but it's good it's good to see that that you're up in nice you're enjoying your time you're looking I'm looking forward to seeing how you've what how much you've improved kind of since uh your injury and what you're going to do this Sunday so I want to thank you so much for your time it's been an absolute pleasure again and I can't wait it's gonna be a pleasure to see you fight again thanks Dave it's great to chat to you again and uh I'll see you how you are and uh a great performance incoming so let's go perfect let's go thank you very much no right
