Post-fight cage interview with Ryan Kelly after IÚR Fighting Championship XVI. Kelly describes winning in the first round with a standing rear-naked choke, including a body lock when his opponent stood up; he considered a guillotine but stayed on the choke. He says it was his first bout in 16 months, he was prepared for three rounds, and he expected his opponent to wrestle and clinch immediately. He recalls slipping early when his opponent kicked his lead leg while he was too heavy on his front leg, then working along the fence, getting a takedown, and staying aware of submission danger off his opponent’s back while letting the fight flow. He wanted to show more striking over three rounds but was happy with a first-round finish, noting past fights had mostly highlighted his grappling. He felt surprisingly calm with normal pre-fight jitters, credited improvements since his last fight, and said he has been working striking with boxing coach Jordan M., whom he started with as a complete beginner. He deliberately avoided his old habit of exploding out hard for only about one round. He closes with advice for newcomers to sign up, start jiu-jitsu, and value the discipline and gym community.

Go back. >> All right, everyone. Your fighting championship. I have here with me I'm going to call you Stephen. Uh Ryan Kelly. Um first of all, congratulations. Uh hardly, you're not even sweating. How you feeling after that? >> N feeling good. It was uh first round, so it was good balls. Um fresh. No, it was good. Uh it was good. Exciting first round. Is that there's a a very exciting uh submission there was a standing rear naked choke. Yeah. >> Yeah. He stood up nice on the back. So >> the nice body lock as well on him and everything >> as well. Yeah. It's good for control. He stood up and just went with him instead. I was looking maybe for the suit off stretch but this time I just stayed with it and went for the choke. >> Heck yeah. Um like I guess just like walk us through it like what was you know kind of what was it? What was uh going through your head you know at the time? >> This was my first fight now in 16 months. So yeah, >> was looking forward to kind of getting back to it, but >> ready for three rounds. We're looking to have a kind of I knew he was going to try and wrestle me, so he clenched me straight away, but kind of didn't really I just kind of let things happen. Like I wasn't looking for anything. >> There's a slip there right away at the beginning, wasn't there? >> Yeah, he kicked my lead leg and I uh was kicked >> I was too heavy on the front leg, but >> Okay. >> Um what was going through your mind after that? >> No, I had to get straight back up, but he clinched me then. Ended up in the fence for a bit. Uh, I can't even remember what way it went for the finish, but now we're on the fence. Uh, I got the taked down. Uh, he was kind of dangerous off his back. Look, I knew that he had a submission threat like so was definitely aware of that, but no, it was just kind of just let it flow and that's what happened. >> Right on. Uh, are you a pretty comfortable grappling then? Like what was what was your kind of plan coming into this? Did you want to go on the ground? Do you want to stay on your feet and do strikes or like what was it? >> Um, no. I wanted to show a bit of striking uh over the the three minutes I thought over over the three rounds. Sorry. But uh definitely take a first round finish. Um >> and quite a few so far. All I've done is really show my grappling in my fight. So looking to kind of mix it up a bit. >> There you go. >> But um no, I was happy when I ended up on top. You know, followed on top. I would have preferred the only thing I was worried about was ending up on bottom maybe. But nah, it was fine. >> Right. So, uh, it was your first fight after some time off. Um, like what was it like uh you like nerves kind of coming into this? Did you >> surprisingly? I wasn't that nervous. Um, quite calm. Obviously, I was still had the fight jitters like, but I wasn't uh overly nervous now. No, >> kind of. I knew you had a lot of improvements since my last fight. So, also confident and kind of more looking forward to showing. >> Was there anything in particular you were working on? >> Definitely my striking. Yeah, I've got my boxing coach Jordan M. So, that's where I've been. uh doing the most work for sure because before I started with him, I was complete beginner. I hadn't really had done any boxing or anything, you know, >> right? And like you, excuse me, you look very comfortable in there. Like you didn't uh um like a lot of fighters, especially after taking some time off, they can kind of had that, you know, that that that ring rust, you know, and uh clearly like you felt you looked very comfortable in there. >> A lot of the time in my fights, I've always came out like just like a ball just straight out and just straight form like, you know. >> Yeah. and you can only maintain that for a round max, you know. So, I was making sure I wasn't making that mistake again. So, >> that's why I'll do the platform. >> Awesome. Um, okay. So, like one of the things I like to do is I like to spread the gospel so to say about like uh combat sports, jiu- jitsu, MMA, everything. Um, like what's kind of one thing you would do to uh help someone make that that last decision uh to step inside their gym and you know, take the take the plunge? Yeah. Take take the step to get on the map. Um, just go. Just don't think about it. Just go start. I started jiu-jitsu and haven't stopped since. So, >> right on. What's >> just sign up and go and start take a class. >> What's one thing that like you've taken away that you use all the time? >> Uh, it's definitely the discipline. >> Yeah. >> You know, you come in, you might be cocky, you might think you're tough or whatever humbles you. And, you know, it's just a good environment. It's a new community. You're going to like the gym. You make so much friends. [ __ ] it's it's just the best thing really I've done. Absolutely. A lot I know a lot of riders view their gyms as being like their, you know, the second home, second families. >> Yeah. >> And I I think um it's kind of across the board and that's one thing that I always try to to get people to understand. Um but look, man, look, I I appreciate your time. Congratulations. Uh welld deserved >> and I I I appreciate your time here. Um and then just lastly, everyone again, I'm terrible at uh self-promotion, so I've been trying to do it here every night or after all these interviews. Check out comconfidential.com. Uh, please help support my channel. It gets me to come out to as many of these shows as possible. Um, and you know, it just helps me out a lot and and it helps fighters out like yourself, get the these spotlights that uh that you guys desperately or you guys so much deserve. Um, and I just don't think there's enough of it, especially with folks coming to these shows um and physically being here rather than just kind of reposting things. >> Um, but look, I appreciate your time. Thank you very much. and uh [ __ ] killed it in there, man. Congratulations. [Music]
