Fansview MMA sits down with Jordan Scully shortly after he won IMAC European gold, following about a year out with injury and a December loss he describes as part of a three-fight skid. Scully reflects on winning the final by decision after years of near misses, crying when the gold was announced, and how the past year of hardship felt worth it in that moment. He walks through tournament life: dieting down instead of a hard cut, fighting multiple days in a row, and leaning on mentality to showcase his skill against legit European prospects. He highlights Team Ireland bonds, especially Michael Cronley supporting him in his apartment abroad, and deep respect for Sam Simon after a tough second round in their bout. Scully gives advice to persist through personal and competitive setbacks, avoid comparing yourself to others, and take inspiration instead. He cites Max L taking about ten years to win IMAC gold, his own nearly seven years of training paying off, a quick loss to an unnamed Serbian opponent at the last IMACs, and plans to eat with that opponent after the interview. He thanks cornermen Colin Maher and Liam McGriffin, praises Irish youth success at the Europeans including Connor Kelly, and says Irish MMA is only starting to grow.

[Music] so I'm here with the newly crowned European champion after a year out of being injured not being able to compete h a tough year as it would be for any fighter when they're just used to compe and competing competing he comes back he wins a belt at your Fighting Championship and now the Europeans thank you very much for your time you look on top of the world is that how you feel I know Dave I uh it's the best feeling in the world I know I I put up a thing on Facebook when I want to I saying best day of my life but that week was the best week of my life and me winning that final was definitely the best day of my life but there's plenty more of them to come so far it's the best day of my life you know yeah there is there's going to be better days better days and better days uh to come because like that you're still young you're only getting started and and before obviously you went away you were such a talent like obviously there was the Jess powo fight where you were the two kind of top people in the division uh and you've come back and you've really announced yourself back on the stage it was like did you did you all forget who I was did you all forget what I was capable of doing and I congratulations on on on the goal because tournament style isn't easy do you want to talk us through what it's like doing a tournament style like that day by day I know you've done it before you got to the finals as a Cadet and and came up against Max where you fought four times on one day which is crazy um but what was it like this time around getting to the final winning the goal like day by day how hard is it to make way every day and how disciplined you have to be look basically like uh just start I'll start off with the way but uh I actually basically DED down and way so I didn't have to cut properly or anything like I H I'm very good at my diet I have a good nutritionist and a sharpshooter and fairness and uh they know what to say to me tell me all the right things to do so that's been a big help and uh then moving on to like like you were saying about fighting three to four days in a row I think it all depends Dave on like your mentality like cuz U with me I just felt like I was ready to go like I was ready to Showcase what I could do like obviously look everyone's nervous we all get nervous and I was but uh no I just like I just wanted to Showcase what I could really do like and I knew like I had the capabilities to beat all these Lads as well that's not me disrespecting any them I knew how good all of them were they were all legit prospects in their own countries as well but I I knew I was like I knew I was just [ __ ] it was my time and I just wanted to Showcase that to everyone around the world yeah and by God did you do it like that getting the gold is is no easy feet like I said these are the best guys in Europe um yourself and Fufu both picked up gold which is fantastic and then we had Silvers we had some bronzes as well how did it feel to be part of Team Ireland as as a team team and going over with guys like that and do you make new relationships and new friendships through the imass through through I was listening just about to say that actually like you do you meet a lot of [ __ ] good people down the line like even at the last ones I've done like I'd still be friendly with like a load of like the L I went on former IM trips to you know like uh your man Michael cronley especially I me and him are after getting very close since this trip like I I want to know Michael well before this like I just knew he was a lot from goway but no me and him like kind of realized we have a lot in common and uh now he's a lot I have to give a special shout out to because he he was actually coming over to my apartment and stuff when uh I was here on my own just to kind of you know Cal me down and that you know it's not easy being on your own out here you know you need you need a bit of support no and that's good and it's good that obviously he see it as well and it was probably good for him as well for his own nerves and his own thing that he had each other to kind of spend time with and kind of C Cal calm the the the nervousness down but you went through what to talk to us about the moment when you realized you'd won and the gold was yours because it was obviously you done a little post on Instagram you could see the emotion how what was that feeling like when you when you announced the the gold medalist because I can only imagine that feeling there night no other and it's it's hard to replicate look I'll be honest I cry I might CED a little bit you know I even feeling bit out just thinking about it but you know it's like I wanted an nighta go medal for so long D I like I come close so many times like I F like I'd failed time and time again and there was even points where I just thought it was it was never going to be but when I finally when I knew I finally did it and I got the decision there was even a part me I was thinking I might not get this decision even though when I watched the back like oh I actually won all TR rounds but when they announced it I was kind of in shock at the start but then it kind of hit me and just all the stuff I went through the past year it all just kind of came out because I was like wow it was all worth it and you really did show how mentally strong you were in this tournament as well and speaking of H when you were on about I da that Sam Simon fight really tested how mentally strong I was in there early like just with that second round in that cuz I said to myself before I walked out these fights like they're going to have to kill me if they want to get me out of there CU I not I'm not going out there without a fight you know yeah yeah and you proved that like that Sam Simon is a dangerous dangerous customer Sam Simon is and you had to come to adversity yeah it was the second round wasn't it and what I actually like today I seen Sam Simon had actually posted a congratulations to you today as well how does that make obviously when you fight each other there's no bad blood usually especially with yourself CU You're such person Sam's such a nice person you just it was a part of both your Journeys that you just met there but when you have people that you've previously competed against wishing you uh good wishes what's that kind of feeling like because it's only kind of MMA that happens in you really see well look Dave like at the end of the day like it's two men trying to like kill each other in there you know but me me and Sam like you know we have a lot in common I have great time for him he's a very good person like you said and uh I had nothing but love and respect towards him Solomon especially like you know just even after the fight we had it kind of how do I put this into words it kind of It kind of connected us even more if that makes sense just say you know when they in there for nine minutes in an absolute war with someone like the level of respect from does go up like imagely I can imagine I can imagine but I want to touch on something you'd said you said obviously you try so hard we we briefly touched on when you got there and you faced Max and you lost and you you'd gone to other competitions and it hadn't quite gone your way and you felt like it was never going to happen if you were going to give advice to someone who had a goal but it wasn't happening for them right now what would it be because ultimately you keep going got that goal what would your advice be to them my advice would be no matter what hardship you're going through personally in life you know whether it be MMA home situations or that just never give up trust the process and you'll eventually start seeing results if it doesn't happen today or tomorrow might happen in a few weeks might happen in a few months it might happen in two years five years but all I can say is just keep on the grind and don't give up yeah no basically what I'm saying is trust the process yeah and like that a lot of people can get frustrated and think oh this isn't for me and like you said at one stage you thought it was never going to happen but with your skill and with your mindset it was always going to get you there if you just keep going it just shows if you just just keep going like some people go to go to that could be 10 years and they might get it after 10 years if you keep going and you don't give a [ __ ] what anyone says you just keep doing you sorry sorry to B you da but like even when you on about Max L sure Max L's training over 10 years it took him 10 years to get an IMA goal you know and how well he's doing now like it's all starting to hit I remember I heard a bit of advice ages ago and it was like you don't really start seeing proper results until you're at seven eighty year Market training and I'm starting to hit the seveny year Market training so I'm kind of starting to see the results D it and like d I'm trying to flat out nearly nearly seven years and I'm starting I'm starting to get the results I want you know like I lost a fight in December I came back I on a belt like I was on a three fight sked and like I was doubting myself but like I said you just have to trust a process and the journey and another thing I'll say as well everyone's journey is different and one more thing don't compare yourself to others as well trust in your own Journey things are meant to happen for a reason and just keep on the grind and eventually things will pay off so that's the last bit of advice I'd give to someone as well yeah there's a lot of solid solid advice in there and the last bit I like as well don't compare yourself to others compare yourself to the the person you were yesterday are you better than Jordan Scully yesterday and if you are good and then you just keep moving no that's you know what I'm saying I compare course to yesterday am I better than I was and like you said it just has to be that 1% that's what they keep saying 1% if you were 1% better than you were yesterday then there's Improvement because people think you need to have these big incremental improvements day by day or week by week and it doesn't happen like that it's just like you said look look if I did it like I'm not gonna lie I used to be very bad I used to compare myself to others all the time I think that was another reason why I was getting so frustrated because I look at like a lad my age and might like let's say you might have a few titles or whatever and I'm like oh why why don't I have that like why why am I not doing that but I've kind of learned this as I've gotten older as well and I truly do mean this like take inspiration from people like that and instead of saying oh why am I not there be like right what can I do to get there like what are they doing what lesson what advice can I take off them to reach that level you know and what are they doing you know and another thing Dave there was actually a Serbian MMA fire I lost one 35 seconds it was the last time offs I did but turns out me and him actually get along very Grand like I'm literally after this interview I'm Lally going for food with him like lovely lad but my point is as well like H just where people fighting and that I could have held a grudge against him be like Oh I'm not going for food with him he beat me but no like uh that's not what the Sport's about and it's learn learn from people like basically just learn from people you want to be like you strive to be you know does that make sense yeah rather like they said there's people who and I talked to fights before and they said for years they hell gorgeous why is he doing better than me why is he and then he just said why am I focusing on these people why amen I not learning from these people I need to focus on myself more so and and that's actually cool that you're going for food with food with them today and that that rarely happens in many other Sports MMA just seems say whether you've come like your F or whatever it just seems to bring people together because I think it's you both know how hard you both trained for that and and the unfortunate thing with MMA is one person has to lose so I think the other person also knows how you feel when when you've won or lost because they and D J In fairness to that Serbian fighter like I literally went up to him at the start of the week and I was happy to see him I Lally went up I shook his hand like it's brilliant to see you man I wish you all the best in perfect so I'm here with the a newly crowned European champion after a year out of being injured not being able to compete h a tough year as it would be for any fighter when they're just used to compe and competing competing he comes back he wins a belt at your Fighting Championship and now the Europeans thank you very much for your time you look on top of the world is that how you feel I know Dave i h it's the best of the week and I was happy to see him Alicia went up I shook his hand I was like it's brilliant to see you man I wish you all the best in this there's actually one more shout I need to give H Colin Maher and Liam MCG Griffin those two lives were exceptional in my corner at the Europeans and if it wasn't for them I probably wouldn't have won this but two of them were exceptional in my corner they making sure you know I was okay during the week and that and uh you know I'm very thankful for that and this is this is something that's going to last on me for the rest of my life and they're going to they're going to be like H cherishing my memories as well you know the two boys so I just I can't thank them enough for everything they've done for me and yeah no that's all I got to say yeah no that's good that's good two two top men in Liam and Colin they've been around the scene and they've been around and they do a huge amount of work for for the IMA and behind the scenes of MMA which they don't get tanked for enough as well I know trying to get it recognized as a sport there's a lot of background work that goes on with them so shout out to them for everything they've done for you and every other Athlete on team Ireland what they're doing for the sport and what they will continue to do in the future 100% da da trust me Irish MMA is only starting it's only going to get bigger from here I guarantee for a fact yeah I think it's the most exciting year since the rise of Connor I think with the amount of like you look at cage Warriers tonight Emma Darcy Jamie Abbott uh Kieran Brady like all debutes like Pro de and it's 14 fighters on that card 14 Irish Fighters Solomon Simon like we've talked about there you go like it goes to Shorter level in Irish MMA but Dave that's only the beginning of it it's only going to get bigger and bigger from here okay some of the youths that I was watching at the Europeans I given a good example of one I was watching particular young Connor Kelly that kid is an absolute animal he literally went in there he submitted I think three or four of his opponents made it look easy and he got the go three an and two decisions that's Dave I remember Conor when he first started out like a like you didn't know what he's doing same as any any of us but like it's amazing to see how much he's gr and even in confidence like myself like over the last few years and that he's only 17 imagine what he's going to be like when he's my age unbelievable yeah he is he is it's amazing like Danny mccor done a fantastic job with the youth I I want to say they brought home 23 medals don't quote me on that they came second only to Ukraine who was Miles Ahead of everyone but then Ireland were miles ahead of of third so like for this tiny Island like you said what's coming next is is going to be scary for the rest of Europe oh trust me we're we're coming we're coming we definitely are thank you again for your time and we will speak I'll speak to you over the next week once you get back and all once you get settled oh 100% you will D look I'll let you go and have a nice day perfect you too
