Fansview MMA sits down with Irish amateur featherweight Kevin Kehoe after his short-notice Irish Fighting Championship title loss to Tiernan Larkin. Kehoe describes cutting roughly nine kilos in a week on chicken and broccoli, studying opponents on tape, and his disappointment at losing a high-profile title fight despite a strong performance. He traces his start in MMA through Andrew Murphy’s classes in New Ross and Wexford, his amateur debut nerves, a three-fight win streak including a title win over Vladimir Stankovic, and a 2023 stretch where he says he has only one win. Looking ahead to Premier FC against Aiden Fagan, he explains wanting to rebuild confidence by fighting opponents at a similar experience level rather than taking constant step-ups in skill. He credits Solomon and his Waterford team—Team Minor Waterford, Gambaru Jitsu, and Sand Kickboxing Crew—as inspiration, plans more fights including IMMAF in September and two late-year bookings, and closes with shout-outs to teammates and coaches.

[Music] thank you okay so I'm here with Kevin Kyo he gave a fantastic performance at the last your fighting championship against Tyran Larkin for the Federal Way strap he came in on a week's notice as well uh he's someone who caught my eye last year he went tree and always he just burst onto the scene and he's been around and had a couple of more fights still so I want to take time to thank you for joining me I'll see you the fight next week at Premier FC how are you feeling and how did you feel coming out with that hearing and fight because it was a fantastic performance your leg kicks are very very good I must say yeah not like I was very pissed off to be honest in terms of like I don't know I wanted to win I really want to win and fair enough you got to win like so it's pissed off what I was I did kind of think like oh I was trying to um think of a deposit it was over hours I was like yeah [ __ ] look it's better to be sitting better be fighting up in the early War getting ready for an exploit rather than just kind of sit in a home and training like normal so yeah all right like I wasn't too bad yeah and obviously because you came in on such short notice what was the wake up like or do you are you closer that way anyways that it's not much of a problem for you to make that way within a week obviously um no I was actually quite a good bit awfully it's just my body is just it just it just loses weight really well thankfully like so I was walking around around 75 kilos or so ish on Thursday when I was told about it and it was the week after so I think it was like a Saturday or Sunday and so I accepted the flight on like a Friday I think so I had to lose like nine or so kilos to get down to like 65.7 I think it was um I just literally only ate chicken and broccoli for like up until then and then I just lost three kilos of water in the Sun and so yeah just [ __ ] done it like it's I don't know [ __ ] like what I'd do it that's suppose that's the life of Fighters well that's one thing that comes apart and parcel with being a fighter that especially if you take it on late notice but I'd say after it did you have something nicer to eat what was your first thing to go to I have to do that oh man I personally don't give a [ __ ] about like Diet in terms of like um you know some people might eat really well or they won't drink before a fight like yeah I'm kind of person whereas I think if I'm gonna win a fight I'm gonna win it so like I'm not going to blame on like the meal I had you know what I mean so oh it literally there's a place called Pizza Palace and warfare I'll just go there straight away it's got a big fat [ __ ] pizza and I got a kind of monster and that was yeah I was eating a lot of food uh once I weighed in so yeah I can only imagine but obviously you've got a fight coming up at Premier um it's Aiden I believe you're fighting isn't it this is Aiden yeah and when you're coming up to a fight do you study your opponents or do you just want to implement your own game because you are only an amateur at the minute it's like we were talking before your year in the moon kind of just competing like do you want to go and Implement and stamp your kind of style or do it you watch them much or do you watch them at all yeah I do watching quite a bit in terms of like I don't really form a gate what I do form a game plan but like you can kind of look at someone and kind of see where they're at like so even like with tearing I just kind of literally just picked some of his more recent fights and just looked at him a lot and a lot just looked and looked and looked and can't just try to understand how their body moved if you know what I mean yeah yeah Raritan coin for exact specific like well he was like susceptible that these are tactics and all that sort of stuff which I was like looking at but I'm also just trying to get a feel for what he's like and trying to imagine how he moves that sort of thing so I do look quite a bit uh and who I'm fighting Aiden figan doesn't have that much footage on him he had one fight there last year on the premier fc3 card and that's it though as much as I can get he had another one the RDA Maps which wasn't much I couldn't get much over and but yeah I know the lands up with the candy he fought a lot from Kilkenny who I I know all the lads like you know yeah looks looks it looks okay to me like I've obviously been in there with a decent like higher level ads now so not until really be worried about not challenge it or anything just it's kind of what I see like yeah because one of the wins that when I look was looking at your record Vladimir stanker he's honest I don't know at the moment and he was I think he was the last person you beat in your tree and all uh yeah when you went on The Tweak so bring us back to why are you why did you go into MMA what brought you to her oh man so I kind of started when I was in transition here in school because we had to kind of you know do like some sort of adventure thing and pick up like a new sport or a new skill or something and there was I don't know I don't know if you ever heard of or remember his name was Andrew Murphy and he went he was a professional like and he fought on Bellator you know and he um he was starting up MMA classes in New Ross and Wexford which is where I'm from Wexford like and just as he was starting I just was looking for something to do and I always had like a Fascination for fighting like I was always like you know like School fights or whatever like I was always interested so um I just went in and that was kind of it like I just started doing it was every Tuesday he would start that that's he started off just doing Tuesdays and I remember thinking like [ __ ] this is class like straight away and there's always boys looking for the next class like as soon as the first class would end I had like a week to wait for the next class and but he started doing it in a kickboxing gym and so instead of waiting for a whole [ __ ] week I would just start going to the kickboxing as well and so that's kind of how I got into it so yeah yeah now I'm training every day I can imagine I'd say I say that was hard like when you went in obviously you said you went and took up the kickbox and then as well but like yeah well how hard was that to think like that sounds like obviously you're excited for the next one but when you first took that class or a couple of classes did you think you were going to start competing like because you said you liked fights you were interested did you think you're going to compete or did you want to do it it's just just a hobby kind of or yeah it was weird like um so Andrew Murphy was like uh he was a professional like so as soon as I saw him and him doing the class and doing MMA I was like I want to do that like straight away I was like I'm going to be professional like like it was so looking back on it it's kind of like stupid like oh it's actually like 15 or 16 and I said yep I'm just gonna do that I know I'm kind of like five years in I'm like [ __ ] you know it's kind of hard like well last time I didn't know I didn't care like I was like yeah I'll just do that so I knew I wanted for you I knew I wanted to be and I don't know I just knew I couldn't want to be the [ __ ] the best like that's always kind of what I do is I want to get into a cage and Floyd I thought it would be cool and yeah now I here I am I'm still doing kickboxing I still train with sand cake boxing crew and uh yeah I'm just kind of trying to chase greatness like that is the ultimate reason why I'm doing this it's not even like for money or anything like it's just I am kind of just looking for belts and all that cool [ __ ] I just literally wanted to be like that guy if you know what I mean yeah I like to hear that as well because nowadays A lot of people talk about money and they should be paid more and it was mean Limon Griffin Liam or Griffin actually I said him I think they should be paid more and he said if you go in to be a fighter you want to be the best it's not about who's getting paid the most like that's a fire Asylum that's exactly what you've just described to me is like the fact that you said money doesn't matter that you go like you're going in obviously now you're fighting for no money uh and it's not easy either so we go to your first fight um when you actually got into the cage for the first time when you've got you've got a book got into the cage tell us what that was like like nerves wise excitement wise but from kind of let's say the fight week to the end of the fight what kind of emotions were you going through oh yeah I know like making the amateur debut and it was actually a huge deal for me because like I had spent a really long time like Indian offices you know like kind of man was uh and I had always like seen like people in the amateurs I always gonna idolize them I see the photo on YouTube and I always thought that's what I want to be and so for years I was kind of building that open my head and then once I actually had a chance to get into the cage making my amateur debut like it was a really big deal like really I was like talk the pressure was on like I remember walking into um the hotel in for ior and I I just felt it was like even though I had done it before I don't like cake box and like full contact cake box and toys before where you're in a ring and there's all that walking music I've done that before but this was like MMA this is like the thing this is what I would like to be looking at for years like and I was like [ __ ] I'm actually here now I was fighting it was like ridiculously tall I don't know how he was making Federal Way but he was just so tall and I was like oh [ __ ] this and I actually remember saying to myself like Okay Kevin just do this one for you and never fight ever again just at least do it once I was even saying to myself looking back I know has been such a policy but like and then once I actually won the fight and I was like whoa and I like since then it's just like no I'm never quitting this I've never quitting um but yeah you always have them kind of like policy thoughts in your head but I just like got over it I just done it and yeah I don't know it was mad very it was mad for me it was like a dream come true because I always seen these people and I was then why was actually doing it like so it was cool so there's potentially someone looking at you now in the novices looking at your fights like you said the way you were with them yeah it's kind of cool to think isn't it kind of yeah as well like there's even lads who are like in our gym like um who are making their debut on Premiere FC like you know and I don't know sometimes you think that they look at me the same way as I looked at like people like Solomon or whoever you know it's kind of cool to think that as well even like Lads into kickboxing that I do and they're just kind of like a younger crowd in there like around 14 to like 17 sort of age I wonder they look up to me the same way as I looked up to like something like Solomon or whoever you know it's kind of cool yeah I don't know I haven't really thought about that much though oh well you like that you're just going to concentrate on doing you and that will transpire yeah it's like I haven't really thought of like myself at that level yet like but then I suppose in their minds they probably think I am at that level but like I don't know I don't know yeah it's an interesting kind of dynamic like I don't really think about too much but like yeah this and then obviously you may just like you were talking about this was the amateur debut was a big deal as well like and you said you're done kickboxing so forth I think the show was now what MMA like you walk into them and it's just I think they're they're a lot better than they would have been years ago the way it's laid out uh strong abdomen it feels like an actual proper event you're going into obviously it's not on a scale of Bellator cage Warriors but yeah it seems like legit whereas when people you got back years ago it would have been in GA horse a couple of chairs everyone's standing right now like to see it it's all done properly it's all like the promotion for is good you went on a bit of a tear then as well uh you went on the far another two more times or one another two more times like how did it feel going and going on the three fight win streak yeah no it literally I kind of had that like mentality of like once I won the first fight I was like okay I'm okay now I can kind of do this like and then I kind of had that mentality of like anyone anywhere any weight any time like and so like the next four I had was like a weight class above like the Sam was supposed to be fighting them but then like a bit hard to try and get me in on the card as well and so I thought him on like a week like two weeks or so it was like it was a short notice anyway and I was like yeah and then um stanker as well I knew he was fairly good at the time he was only like one and all it was a weird thing you want to know but then like on the one fight I found him that was when I was like three you know so I was like what and also that fight was like for a title as well and I was like yeah [ __ ] it I'll do it um and then they like offered me Armand and I was like yeah [ __ ] it I'll do it and then from there I've kind of like right I should probably not take every fight and then Tierney came up and I was like yeah [ __ ] it I'll do it um so I don't know like I I just I kind of like fighting I'll kind of just fight whoever um yeah it was nice to kind of get that that three win streak going like but now I've kind of lost my oh so like I just want to get back to win and that was kind of annoying like it was like this year I've only like won one fight and I was in kickboxing so it's kind of like annoying I just want to get back into like winning [ __ ] inside of things now as well like [ __ ] like it's it's really [ __ ] so it feels like a chair like you know yeah I can't imagine but like like look who you said you fought tearing uh you fought at the Nationals as well wasn't it you thought yeah like Aaron and Tiernan Aaron's gone bro he's gone on that octagon challenge uh Tiernan is not far away from being pro so obviously there was a there was a big kind of Leaping competition there and actually would you when you look at stanker though as well now he's actually fighting at hearing him for a title so yeah I can imagine I can't imagine what's like losing because like everything you've put into it up onto that stage like that's what people see you for the nine minutes or whatever it is that how long the fight lasts but they don't realize that's not even just a camp that year as a workbook and is that why there is such a disappointment when you do lose oh it's just I can't even explain it it's just like it's as well as like all the there's that record as well like which is like hard you can't really run away from that record in MMA like it's just so well documented it's like that loss will be forever on your record now and like anyone can Google back and see and watch it like there's that element over as well and it's just like as well like okay like the Ironman one I was like okay we're fine I had a good run like I had a good like a little tree fight win streak there but the entertainment when it was for that title like I really did want it like and I said like I did see the footage of him like he didn't look he wasn't doing anything that like was really scary it was just he was a good pressure but I was like okay it was on two I I feel like they should be able to I don't know I just had that expectation of winning I really wanted to win it was like it was a big fight you know what I mean it was like one of the big fights that you take it wasn't just kind of like a small like prelims or whatever this is like a big fight and if I won this it would be huge be huge for like kind of the respect aspect of it like everything I just I don't know I'm not competing just for the crack like I want to win like and I want to [ __ ] get bills and achieve all these great things like your source and then when you don't win that and also I had to try to lose all that weight and travel all the way up to the [ __ ] North from Waterford like uh yeah look it was kicking the balls like but okay that's just white I suppose and I'll get over it like you said you took it on a week's notice uh you had to travel you fought here in Lachlan as well like that he's like for Max Ali likes he's nearly going pro and the account you gave yourself was fantastic even me and decky I don't know if he's seen the show after when me and Becky had a chat and deck he actually at the end he says he actually wanted to give you a shout out for coming in and Performing like he did because that's what we both said you didn't look at our place and I was talking to a Tiernan even said the same he didn't even say the same like you deserve to be in there and I think these titles will come and they will come I think it's just a matter of time and with in regards to the record let's say I think the answer record doesn't mean so much I talked to Karen Clark recently here the 13-11 amateur record and look at him now he's seven and all Bellator so like fight these people now get that experience I think and the only benefits you go on go on Vlog because like that you're taking all the fights you're not turning down fights which a lot of people tend to do to try and Pad the record and I think that's worse off uh in the long run yeah no definitely like I haven't I don't think I've had any like easy fights so far like every fight opportunity has come to me has just been yes yes yes I will take that for you later I suppose that is kind of the um that's the amateur way of doing it I just take every fight it's more so on my own head I guess like I know a lot of amateurs do kind of have even like a losing record like it's fine on amateur you know what I mean no one cares um but obviously I'm not professional yet so like everything feels more significant to be now in the future I probably feel like not unlike but for now it's just it does it is a sheer feeling but yeah look I know I don't really mind too much I do understand that it's all for a bigger goal in the future like I do want to be chasing greatness like I do want to be on big shows and going pro like that's all in the plan 100 that's all on the plan like trailers will come 100 no they definitely will and I like you kind of your kind of mentality on it though because you're the most important fight is always your next fight and like you look you'll always look at your last fight to see what went wrong or where you can possibly improve so you're like current you do have a bigger goal in the end but you're you're really your mindset you're stuck in this goal right now it's like you know to get to that goal you have to achieve these these little goals in between and and you seem fully immersed in it which is actually a very good trade to see um and I commend you for it because like that I think big things are going to come if you just keep going the way you're going because like I said your performances have been amazing yeah look or even someone I use even a good inspiration as well who having a dream is Solomon like communities obviously have a few losses before but like just look at how far he's gone like I've had fights before in the past like I've or even a kickboxing like above kickbox like like I train a kickboxing for like two weeks and you know how kickboxing runs it's just very um it's payment of the Dark Ages you know like they'll just throw into a fight like two weeks in like and so I've always had plenty of M where I got the head smashed off me like because I was a beginner like just go and find cake box and like go are just kind of gone through it like I just most of my way through and I've kind of learned that kind of aspect of just just getting into the next way just emotional way through just focus no one cares just keep fighting keep fighting just keep on going you're like you only like you only really lose when you quit like right so I say [ __ ] I want to be a champion and why not like why why would I quit like you know I'm sure there's probably plenty people out there who like can't do MMA for whatever reason or disabled in some way or like what excuse do I have I don't really have any excuse to quit like just keep [ __ ] going just keep fighting and you'll get there like you know and the sport as well is so addictive when you do win it's like the best [ __ ] high ever so like just keep chasing that boy keep chasing greatness and what more can I do like what else would I do anyway even if I already quit MMA for whatever reason like what would I do in the meantime so I might as well just put my full effort into this and if it doesn't work out so what like you know I mean at least I can say like done the best that I could to be the best you know you know I do like the attitude as well because what was it Dana White said if I didn't go and try and start the UFC um I could just go back to my job so on a sort of way so what what you have to lose um and as people usually he don't who don't take risks are the ones who kind of criticize up um I think just keep doing what you're doing and I think you will go far we I like your mentality your attitude every last I can see it it's hurt you and yeah to do more but talk to us about Solomon obviously when he fought a cage Wars like he he went pro how much of an influence is he not just to you but to everyone in the gym because of how far he's gone because when I seen him lay amateur I was like this guy was ready to go pro I think already and when he did turn pro it was amazing what's he like in the gym how what's the atmosphere around him and who does everyone not everyone but do a lot of the younger people look up to him well I can't speak for everyone but for obviously for me like yeah like like especially he's literally he's promo offered like and he's he's basically got to the pro level straight out walking he's trained in Dublin now like but he done most of his all of his training up until he went pro he got to that level does that over here like so he kind of proved in that sense you don't need to go anywhere we have a good enough team here to get anyone to that level like so that's a big inspiration for me and also like when he is fighting like the whole gym is like watching like everyone everyone's even because every gym is like gambaru Jitsu and team minor Waterford like even all the Jiu Jitsu guys uh like stopwatch are doing for a second and just like watch to see what he's going to do because you know he's kind of like um yeah he's he's the big fish in in the Germany also it's it's always spectacle to watch Solomon play it like we're always looking forward to it you know he's he's kind of the best of us you know what I mean so yeah big deal when everything's quite a big big deal yeah he's and he's one of the nicest guys ever as well I've met him in person I've interviewed him and like that you're your team I like your your coaches down there as well like I always have chats about the shows and like that it's good like I know he's gone to Dublin because there is a lot more pros and like it'll help him level up because he goes up uh I don't know how often he goes up but the fact that he came from that team that you don't need to go because sometimes a lot of people go I want to go SVG I want to go here I want to go there and there's I have nothing against those gyms but sometimes like people are for you look at CMAC as a small gym and what's coming over there and I think you're right like that to stick with your gym because the coaches are doing fantastic like he's not the only one that's going to come out there and GoPro like I said it's yourself there's there's a couple of orders on the rise as well but back to you for the rest of the year obviously you've got this fight have you anything as planned or are you just looking at this fight that's ahead here and then you'll decide once it's over and so yeah we don't have any names of I think uh or you are is again in September so I'll probably look for that like um names always as long as you're not one of the best [ __ ] lands in the country again like yeah I'll take it like I mean um so yeah like the fight we'll have next weekend it's kind of like I'm not too worried about it like it's kind of a step down from what I was doing like not like disrespected to Aiden or anything it's just like I was fighting a toilet against here and Locker near like two or three weeks ago you know um but like goals wise like I don't know especially it goes a little bit anything and kickboxing there are two kind of things I'm interested in like so I just want to fight as much as I can just keep getting it's getting a little win streak or get another run going again like I just I don't want to be like a limo like win a fight win win win win and win and there's a few names out there that I'd be kind of be looking at like um that'd be a round white record like we're only like less than 10 fights like that's one kind of look for you know that kind of record yeah you know and like there is massive opportunities like I said this fight once this fight's out of the way you've got your French that's actually got me on twice before the end of the year it's gonna be September and then December and then there's so many other shows that are going to be in between but it's good like you said like you went up levels and you want to kind of kind of build your way back up the ladder of sounds and with your mentality your attitude and your skill I think you can go really far in my opinion and it's really refreshing to hear people say that because a lot of people would kind of put on bravado whereas you're quite honest about who you fought and thinking that you don't want to not that you don't want to fight the best in the country but you want to go back down sky's the same your level and build from there again yeah well look I've seen so many people before right who are like oh and two or Owen three but they're [ __ ] unreal like I remember that was a big thing for me going into the amateurs because like new lads who are on a losing record but they were smash me in the gym well the thing is they were really good so they were just point to a [ __ ] meat grinder at the top and it's got Smash and then it never fought again like I know people like that and it's like I get there they're good and they should be in with the best but what does that do to their confidence when they're scared anyone to base again smashed and smashed and smashed when they could or not even smash let's say just like just edged out on a decision or just bad boy a bit like or something I mean like it's important I think to just okay if you're all and oh fight someone who's 0-0 or 1-0 or 0-1 just because you're good and you're on o doesn't mean you should fight [ __ ] for a title like just constantly just keep rising up and that's what I'll build confidence I feel like for me like I could be the best amateur in Ireland if I just let me get my rounds in let me get my time in the cage and kind of constantly fight better and better opponent whereas I'm going free in a guy who was like on a losing record who's like going forward and go or something like 10-0 it's like like come on like I how am I supposed to know how good I am if I'm just making massive leaps in skill you know what I mean like so I need to be able to gauge my own skill level of people who are around you know I kind of make huge jumps and skills I don't know what the [ __ ] gonna happen you know I mean so I think it's important to just climb the ladder it's the right way to do it it's the right way to become a champion it's the right way to just [ __ ] do anything in life any skill just constantly climb the ladder yeah and I like the way you put that because I think it's it's people need to manage their careers a lot better like I said they could be really it has been really good lads that are going out there and they're getting beat getting beat and then they're like you know what this isn't for me to go to another three no four and I want to like this isn't for me but they shouldn't have been in those fights in the first place whereas if you build it slowly and manage your record and I'm not saying because some people when they say manage the records they look and they they fight can sometimes if you know what's on the way up but you want to fight someone of a similar record so you can gauge okay he might give me trouble here he might give me trouble there but you're going to build on it whether you're going to lose you're going to build on and go right this is the level like oh is that this is where I'm actually at and we go on to the next one with a similar record and build towards those titles and towards those big fights and I really like the way you've you've put that that you to manage your career because a lot of people yeah you do want to just get in a fight but you have to do it smartly as well because like that if you want to win on losing streak six seven eight you'd be like you know what this isn't for me if you just yeah pop Lads and so I really like your approach to it yeah I know like um I don't really respect like like can crushing like it's like like MMA is very kind of like bribed kind of like sports they all about disco exactly but like I just feel like you kind of have a bit of overall kind of like martial artists and we're supposed to have like respected discipline and [ __ ] like she'll be fighting lads that you should be in there with like you know like I don't know there is kind of question there I don't really really I just think fight trait you should be aiming to fight the best at all times not just getting away going yay um like in vegan like he's a probability Jiu Jitsu and he's a weight class above so I usually fight away and this is lightweight so like I'm fighting a heavier Grappler so he always wanted to like it's like oh he hasn't thought in a year as well so there is that kind of like you know just like kind of like scare Factor um but after that I train I'll try and build someone who's maybe a bit better and a bit better and a bit better you know like that just makes sense like but in my opinion yeah because there is danger there like I said you're facing a heavier Grappler who if they get to the ground and it's going to be harder than to get them off and he's one and two but like that he hasn't fought in a year who's to say like what train he's done in that year because obviously he's in SBG he's around he's he trains with the pro team A lot of times I think so like so now how much he's improved because that's what when I say to people when they're looking at fights or answer Fighters don't take too much from it because from one fight to the next you know you can improve drastically so there is dangers in that fight um but like I said I think it's good to porn for you I think it's gonna be a fantastic fight and it's a I like the premiere what's it make of the big cage that they have oh way better like even against it here and there and all your orchid it's really small there's not much places to like move and make space and like just give me more tools to use and I'll be happier you know get rich in pads I'll be happier just remove rules and give me more space and I'll be happier so it's much better in that cage you know it is a good cage it is a good show and it's going to be going on by the time I release this is going to be Monday so it's going to be on Saturday um I'm Gonna Let You Go is there anything you want to say before you go or anyone you want to shout out and I want to thank you for giving me your time as well yeah I suppose I'll just shout out like like uh on Hennessy and down O'Neill they're making their debut as well on the show they're going to be unreal as well Warren Savage he was supposed to be on the card as well I think I'm not sure that's going ahead anymore but definitely those three are good ones to look out for as well Bobby and Gary from Tijuana Watford like [ __ ] class coaches and even all the lads of gambrel like um Thomas power and Kevin Aragon who are my main Jujitsu coaches like so big [ __ ] tanks to them or solid team and then yeah kind of time coming off perfect thank you so much for your time I can't wait to see you fight in person again it's always a pleasure and thank you for joining me today thanks Sean thank you thank you
