Combat Confidential speaks with Ben Houston immediately after his win at GFC 2 - GladiatEire Fighting Championships 2. Houston describes a long preparation—roughly four straight months of training across what felt like two camps—after an October booking was rescheduled, and says his hands, wrestling, and grappling finally clicked in the final weeks. He expected more grappling from his opponent, who instead mixed in striking and takedown attempts, and Houston highlights relying on his back and a left backhand that his coaches told him to use repeatedly. He reflects on staying calm with pre-fight nerves, feeling he was the clear winner while waiting on the judges, and finishing with strong cardio. Looking ahead, he plans to enjoy December with family, then return to competition as early as February and fit in another one or two bouts over the following year while keeping training steady.

All right, we're back. >> Uh, Mr. Ben Houston. >> Yeah. >> Um, first of all, congratulations. >> Thank you. >> Um, what does this victory feel like for you? Like, >> how you feeling? >> Buzzing to be honest. Um, it was a long long train of camp. Had done two basically. just it was just near four straight months of just training and >> retraining specifically for this or just for >> I was originally meant to fight this guy a couple months prior in October >> but I got rescheduled >> and I was happy enough but it just it felt like a really long time but you know it just gave me more time just to get better and better every day and I felt like towards the end our last few weeks I just started turning the weak corner >> right >> and it was like you know what this actually seems really good for me. Was there anything in particular that kind of tipped you over the edge there? >> Hands, they just started working, started moving, started working it with my wrestling, started working with my grappling, and it was just all coming together. And I feel like just after that fight there, can't wait to watch it back and just I feel like I had a new evolution and just bringing it all together. >> But it could have been better, could have been more like, but um I know I'm buzzing. >> Okay. Um, so what what do what do you do to kind of control your nerves and like your maybe fear, anxiety or whatever kind of coming in to >> just take it all in. Just take it all in. Just feel everything. Go up, see the cage, come here, sign your medical home, just do everything. Just feel everything. You're going to be nervous. You're nervous. 2, three, four weeks. Like your fight poster gets in seven, eight weeks prior and you're sitting right. This is real now. I've just agreed to fight somebody. But >> just take it all in. Just take every day as it comes. you know, recover properly, train every day. If you're training every day and you know he's training every day, nothing else you can do. You just push yourself to your limits. >> Did you kind of have an expectation of your opponent coming into this? And did they kind of meet your expectation? >> Well, that surprised me. I thought he was going to show more grappling, but he did try and shoot on me and stuff, but he was strong. He was good. Um I knew know Jim I think or the heavy grappling gym like but um >> no he threw strikes and all it was good good fight he surprised me there I thought I was going to be the one mainly throwing the strikes I th I threw the batter strikes in my opinion like but >> um I don't know he he gave me everything give me a we bit of everything and I like fights like that they excite me just where you're working on everything and I I do everything in training anyway it doesn't bother me but I like a fight like that just a bit of everything. Was there a specific point where you were like, "Okay, I got to switch up whatever it is I'm doing to, you know, kind of match this or to counter?" >> Um, no. See, to be honest, I just call on early straight away. The first round, took us back and then I was like, that's my back, my left hand was catching him every time. Coaches even said it broke. Just ping him with a backhand. >> Must have hit him a good 10 times in the second and third, every round. Like, >> I just kept pinging him with it and he near went down and was raising that I didn't put him down to be honest with it. I guess. >> But I know I've got the power to put people down on their hood. So, >> it'll come. It'll come eventually. >> Like when when you're in the cage and you're kind of waiting for them to to announce the winner. What's that feeling like? >> Uh it's frustrating like you know um sometimes you know in your head I fought personally I won the fight but you know it can go when you go to the judge of scorecards anything can happen really but you just got to show dominance. You just got to prove that you were the winner the clear winner and then you'll not worry. I wasn't really too worried about I knew I was going in there, you know. I knew I was going in. >> That's good. Uh yeah, sometimes it's like, you know, like you know, but you're almost kind of there is a chance to Yeah. No. Uh that's cool. That's cool. Uh so like what what what's one thing you're taking away from tonight? >> Something that something that you think you're definitely going to use, you know, in the down the line in the future. >> Yeah. >> Definitely going to keep using them. definitely going to keep using them. I think that's the most definitely the most best fight I've done just with my hands in general now. It's definitely >> a specific moment or something that's sticking out in your head like that you remember. >> I think it was just the speed of just every time he was hitting me. I was hitting him back three, four or five punches and they were just counter just going back and forward to be honest and I was like I'm I'm in this. I'm going to I want to finish here and I I want it >> and I was just happy enough. If I could have done more like four or five rounds in there to be honest today and I was >> you feeling that good coming out of the >> I was not heavy bre at all there like whenever I finished the third round. >> That's great. >> Yeah, >> that's great. Yeah, cardio tends to be the uh what do you want to call it? The uh >> it's the main aspect in my eyes. If you don't have cardio, you'll suffer like >> Exactly. Exactly. Like I know everyone everyone trains cardio, but not everyone you know trains cardio. >> Yeah. >> Um so to to feel like you can come out of it and do like you know another couple rounds of that's great. Yeah, >> it's definitely a reflection on your um your training. >> Um >> yeah. So, what can we expect from you next year? >> Uh early get out as early as possible. Probably want to get out in February. >> Okay. >> And then maybe just get another one or two in just throughout the year. I want to just keep training. I'll enjoy the fruit fruits of my labor here for December. Spend some time with my family and my friends. Couple drinks in here and whatnot. Enjoy Christmas >> and get back out as soon as possible. >> Oh yeah. All right, man. Look, I don't want to take too much more of your time. I appreciate it. Thank you for talking to me and congratulations on your your fight tonight. >> Thank you. >> All right. Heat. Heat. N.
