Fansview MMA host Dave interviews Jonny Duggan ahead of an Elite show in Cork, where Duggan fights on short notice after his original French opponent pulled out and Paul stepped in. Duggan describes a pattern of late opponent changes, credits coach Aaron and manager Barry for handling matchmaking, and says Paul is the kind of high-level Clan Wars bantamweight opponent he wants rather than easy wins. He reflects on his previous Elite Cork performance against Portugal’s Mario—an IMFs bronze medalist—including breaking a bone in his foot and breaking two of Mario’s fingers, which cost him a title fight the following week. Now fully healthy, he values fighting at home in Cork in May and again this weekend instead of long trips to Northern Ireland. He previews the local MMA Cork buzz with teammates Manning, Jack McGuire, Louise, Evan, Barry Kennedy, and Jordi McCoy’s MMA debut, and outlines an active schedule: Cage Conflict on 2 November and hopefully Elite again in December.

[Music] okay so I'm here with Mr Johnny Dugen who's gonna be fighting in Cork again this weekend the fight original opponent fell true short not it's Paul no Ste in so um a roller coaster of emotions for you over the past couple of weeks or did you know you were going to have to replacement straight away or what kind of happened there once once you found out uh your original Point fell true was was it like [ __ ] here we go again well Dave it's never a fight week or a build up to a fight but me having some pull outs by H I think at this point every fight I have someone pulls out like you know so it's nothing new to me and I just they cam I'm very lucky um with Aaron obviously my coach and Barry who is my manager as well he kind of looks after all the fight stuff and everything like that I leave it in their hands and the lads are very good that way you know um they came to me a day after the original French guy pulled out and suggested Paul who was a yeah and like that he's a very good opponent he's uh like he's he's he was Clan Wars he's I don't know if he still is no I think they put his belt up because he hasn't been on two shows or something but yeah he's well as far as I'm concerned he's still a CL War champ anyways but I thought I seen they adverti the fight for H he's beaten some good guys and he's lost to some good guys like that you know it's not all about winning it's about the type of opponent you're facing like yourself he's faced Good Guys Lou face Good Guys how does it feel to come up against someone like Paul and especially on short notice does that make it easier or harder because like obviously you'd be prepping for a certain fighter but sometimes Fighters say it's easier when they take a short notice one or someone because they don't read too much into the other person yeah and that's kind of the way I'm looking at it as well I'm focused on me like you know um all respect the Paul and the team at Milo like you know those guys they're showing up on 10 days notice like you know to to fight um I feel confident obviously Paul feels confident if he's willing to take it on chart notice as well you know so let's let's see what happens I'm looking forward to Paul Paul's the type of fight I want I don't want these type of fights where I'm going away and going three four and0 not fighting guys at a high standard I think I proven at this point Dave looking around looking at who I fought I only fight the guys that I really want to make an impact on I mean you just have to look through the list and see you'll know yourself yeah no I do like that I that's so I'm probably the only person who knows so much about the amateur typology in Ireland like it's just it's mad but like that there's no point in fighting people that are going to be G me fights and I see you see that happening in certain promotions I don't think it's as prevalent in Ireland I think in the UK it can it can be quite like that because it doesn't teach you anything but you're gonna be fighting pork again talk to us about your last fight it was a fantastic performance obviously you ended up with a bit of an injury after but it was a really really good performance how did it feel to fight at that show in Cork because there's not many shows there but hopefully Elite is just going to keep going and going yeah like I mean the first Elite like I mean I obviously didn't know what to expect like you know I fought all over the country I've fought abroad you know I've fought in different spots and like obviously the crowds are slightly different but like I think it's safe to say like there's no show like a home show like I mean the crowd was electric likeing you know that just brings a different energy to how you want to fight as well like you know um I suppose like I mean I was lucky enough the last time I was the Coan on top of what Brian had there so a lot of the people that were there would have already known me the same way they have known Brian so like you know there was a lot of support in the background and like this one's going to be the exact same we're going to bring in the exact same kind of atmosphere support people are coming in terms of the last fight I was very happy with the performance um Mario was a guy from Portugal H just had a bronze medal at the imfs as well so you know they are the type of fights where I get to say like you know I've beaten him I'm showing my standard which is really really important to me like you know um this is another one Paul to Banton way Champion it's another one on my record I want to look at and say yeah Happy Days have beaten him now as well yeah and and in an end that fight obviously you got injured but I think did you break his fingers or something like that kick as well and and he carried on and obviously you had the injury I'm I'm presuming the injuries cleared up and all now um 100% healthy um so yeah that's funny enough like because um I half kicked him and hit aart of his shin and broke a ball in my foot um but about the first round I I kicked Mar and broke two of his fingers or something like that his two middle fingers just completely broke he said that he felt it straight away um so when the fight finished um I kind of sat down slightly because my foot was killing me and he came over and he was like uh oh you broke my fingers and he said it and you know like I started laughing I goes oh you broke my foot and the two of us were kind of laughing about it then like like you know you know that's just part of the game like you you just take those ones now I was upset obviously then like because I was meant to fight for our belt the week after um that didn't happen um because of the broken foot but it's one that yeah I was I was GED about but that's the common time yeah and like that you said as part of the game uh like the fight and C obviously the title is important but like to fight and cor is important because at obviously we can see Elite is going to go on and on and on but sometimes shows don't know what's going to happen after the first show so like I'm not saying it was going to be one and done but there could be the potential of that and if that opportunity had left you might not have got that opportunity again so grab it with both hands while you can and like you said the belts will come in time anyways do you want to sort of way yeah and that that's the way I look at it too like I mean like how many times am I going to get to fight in front of my friends and family you know and that's the way I look at it like I mean I'm lucky enough I did in May I'm doing it again this weekend um but who knows after that like and I mean like look you don't know you could get an opportunity on another show that could turn around and say oh we want you to fight here instead of you fighting on a Lea it could be you know a title fight it could be something that intrigues you to say yeah I want to fight in that so I'm gonna take anyone I can get at home while I can like you know yeah no you might as well so like obviously you're gonna be fighting there again um like obviously because of short notes have you looked much into Paul or do you just look at the basics and then kind of like what like what he does good and what he does bad or not not bad but like try and identify holds or are you just going to go in and just focus on your game and trying to implement it on him rather than worrying about him a bit of a like you know I have obviously looked at his fights like you know I mean it's part of the game now at this point like to make sure we're looking at you know what people do what they don't do but like I'm not overthinking at the same time da like I mean I have belief my own abilities to turn around and say like you know if I'm on Farm like there's no one beating me and like that's that's the way I have to look at that like you know and I mean anytime that you see me kind of in showing up ready to go um not really like sluggish like I have been on one or two of my earlier fights um when you see me Shar ready to go it's very hard to beat me and that's the way I look at it yeah I found like your movement and everything in in that last fight in Cork was Sensational I think that was probably one of one of the best performan I've seen from you in person anyways um I just thought you moved so well and H like you were so evasive and you were in and out and I just I thought it was very good performance so I'm looking forward to to this one and obviously this MMA cork you've so many people on the C you've got Manny um who will steal the show as always he's stole the show before it's even started with his Antics you've obvious got Jack there's like so many of he's on you've got jod uh jod who I'm really looking forward to transitioning into MMA H Louise is on it again Evan like there's so many people like what's it like in the gym right now what's the buzz like ah the buzz is amazing you know and I mean like look Manning obviously brings the hype and like I mean I love being on the same show as him anytime we same show just brings in energy and it's great like you know um but this is my first time sharing a show at Jack McGuire which is a big one for me because Jack obviously is my other coach along with Aaron so it's the buzz is really starting filtering around that as well like you know and I mean like you have all the others you have the Evans you have the louises you have uh Barry as well Barry Kennedy you know and then obviously you've got Jordi mccy who is making her debut like I mean Jordie is Sensational and that's going to be something special as well to to watch grow you know um but like the buzz in the gym at the moment top to bottom everyone's supportive of each other everyone's kind of in that kind of fla s now of kind of like right everyone's got a fight but I look after each other you know and it's just great to be around like the energy is really really good around the gym at the moment yeah I can imagine is and Jordan mcti I'm gonna say this now so I can want to look back in in years to come I telling you this girl is going to be a problem in female MMA I just think I've watched her my T she's a she was a kid knocking grown women out like unbelievable talent but with like with the gym obviously go like you said Jack Maguire um he was out for a while he came back and and like that it there him and Aaron and because we was I always kind of wondered I always kind of said will you be like so what's the story but when they're coming back and what's it like like to have a coach like that and then like have having compete on the same show as you like I said it is more special because of that like yeah when were you looking for him to come back were you looking for him to come back like was there ever any hints or did you think he was gone for a while uh well like we'd always ask him like in general we'd always be try to be nosy like but like I mean Jack Jack Jack's a kind of you know he keep keeps himself with a lot of stuff like so you you wouldn't find out off him even if you did ask him like you know but he like he's he's the he's the standard Setter and that's the way we describe it like you know I mean like he's the guy in the gym that everyone sets the standard off like you know so when we when you saw that he was coming back he fought in Spain in March I mean he put on a Farms there finished your man brilliant and then when we found out he was going to fight on Elite I mean there was a huge Buzz for that as well like you know I mean I'm lucky enough Jack ining around my weight so I get to do an awful lot of training with him um and obviously like you know Aaron was in my weight when he he was uh competing as well so like I mean who who two better people to kind of you know mirror your own self off in terms of how to perform how to how to compete best advice you can get is from them like you know yeah and like I think fantastic people and fantastic coaches and and like that the past year and a half or so you've really seen not that there wasn't before but you've really seen so many fighters come out with your gym and like just progress and how you can see them how far they're progressing um which is fantastic to see and one there's one thing obviously about this show which is one thing you're probably like you don't have to travel as far as you usually do that's don't like because like you're down you're down that side of the country it's usually Belfast der Nori those kind of areas and they're they're like for me Bast about two and a half hours and two hours for me to cook so you're looking at about four five hours is it for you to do those trips how how does it feel not to do that trip do you know what it's it's good for just even just your own mental side of things even like you know I mean that drive is absolutely so destroying like and it it's just it's Grand even going up coming home even oh my God like and like there's no no way around it you just have to do it like you know but like it's nice been to kind of wake up in your own house um less less travel you know even for things like WS things like that like you know like Wayne come home relax no fear of like you know oh have to get a hotel have to get this have to get that it's just all these extra bits that you normally have to sort out AR there which is great and do you think that eases your mind going into it because like fighting is obviously is physical most of your training is physical but it's a huge mental aspect too and do you think D that will alleviate some pressure from you and make you like a Freer kind of fighter more relaxed in there and then you can do what you do with your movement with your kicks and stuff you think that will help you overall in your performance yeah like I mean like look I mean the main thing is to show up you know and I think that's always going to be the mindset like I mean show up and fight like you know but like I mean I suppose the other side of things is like not having those extra bits like and I mean like outside of that like I mean you know my family and stuff like that so it's easier for me to be here you know a bit more rather than having to go away a day or earlier and then not getting home till late the next day or something like that like you know it's just it's just it is just mentally kind of nicer right yeah you could put it that way definitely yeah I can imagine it is because like that I can imagine the drive up and then like you said the drive home for me especially that's why I go with Jess or brown or someone now because a bit of company but I'd say it's awkward as well if you've won a teammate's lost I say that's a mixed bag of emotions then in a car it's not the sort of way I can imagine that's yeah and I've been on B to that I've been on side where I've won and you're you're in great form and then I've been on the side of where I'm sitting in a car and someone is absolutely full of beans after knocking someone out and you're sitting there going why the [ __ ] did I get caught like that do you know so it's it it goes both ways you know yeah it's just p and pass of the game and obviously you're not obviously looking past Paul but are you looking to fight again this year because I know there's a closer of shows in November which is it could be quite close to this obviously if You' come out this unscathed and healthy would you be looking to get on one of those shows or are you going to wait till the new year I'm booked already so I'm going fighting again the second November I'll be on cage conflict so that's um that's my next fight so cage conflict November 2nd and then hopefully Elite in December again so I'm gonna go at least the minimum two more times this year wow yeah so and that's the way I want like you know I want to be active and I suppose I should have one more fight on my my thing with Morgan Hees actually two because I was meant to fight and training as well um so like I should have nearly four fights now you know um but obviously things didn't work out that's part of it but look I'm going to stay active stay as long as I'm healthy and that's the main thing I'm ready to fight um I think beforehand I would have been like oh I need to rush into a fight I need to rush into this I need to rush into that right now I'm kind of at the stage where I'm like if I'm healthy I'll fight if I'm not ready I'm not ready you know yeah because you don't want to aggravate injuries make them worse drag them out and you see that happens a lot cuz you're tough you just want to go and fight but sometimes you need someone to pull the re back and say no let it heal and just uh get on with it and then go fight like said when you're ready but it's going to be fantastic event this weekend I can't wait to see you fight in person again I gonna let you go is there anything you want to say or anyone you want to shout out before you go and thank you so much for your time oh no first of all thank you for your time Dave for always H make the effort for all of us um and it's great exposure for every single one of us that get interview Bo you um obviously the whole club as per usual thank you for for everything the support OB we've got a big weekend ahead um and obviously my family and friends then as well the people that support me on a day-to-day basis you know um they they're the important people that we don't see in the mix of all this stuff so it's really really really appreciate everyone um and obviously everyone that's going to come on the night watch the Pay-Per-View link um obviously let's make it as electric as we possibly can um and again yeah just my two coaches Aaron and Jack yeah perfect I can't wait to be at the next Elite show I can't wait see you again Manning and all all the crew from MMA C and all the other gyms that are going to be there and then meet new people that are going to be on the card as well so thank you very much and I would see you Saturday thanks Dave see you bud okay so I'm here with Mr Johnny dougen who's gonna be fighting in Cork again this weekend the fight original opponent fell true J not Paul no stepped in so um a roll coast of emotions for you over the past couple of weeks or did you know you were going might as well so like obviously you're gonna be fighting there again um like obviously because of short noes have you looked much into Paul or do you just look at the basics and then kind of like what like what he does good and what he does bad or not not bad but like try to identify holds or are you just going to go in and just focus on your game and trying to implement it on him rather than worrying about him a bit of all like you know I have obviously looked at his fights like you know I mean it's part of the game now at this point like to make sure we're looking at you know what people do
