Fansview MMA host David interviews clinical hypnotherapist Barry Carlin about mental performance in combat sports. Carlin recounts his own 2020 London lockdown breakdown—COVID, sleep loss, acute transient psychosis, arrest, 48 hours in a police cell, a four-week HMP Thameside stint during COVID restrictions, hospitalization, a move to Derry, psychotherapy, and a neuroscience-plus-hypnotherapy qualification. He describes winning dismissal of a mistreatment case against police and building a practice working with individual athletes. On MMA and grappling, he explains joining Torres Jiu Jitsu in Derry after Martin McLaughlin credited hypnotherapy with helping him win a title, then working with Tony McLaughlin for four weeks before the ABJJF Vegas World Championships, where Tony took silver. Carlin details his fight-camp process: four to six weeks out, confidentiality, mapping doubts and fight-week gaps, scripted hypnosis recordings of about 25–30 minutes, sleep work, and managing primitive versus intellectual mind states without dulling fight intensity. He says more fighters—including Nathan Mulligan, who contacted him after hearing a prior Fansview episode—are seeking help as stigma eases. David highlights Nathan’s Four Nations upset wins and asks about ego, cortisol, weight cutting, and fight-day waiting periods.

[Music] foreign [Music] Carlin um if you go to settle your head on Instagram he has a page there he's a clinical clinical hypnotherapy hypnotherapist uh he's worked with a couple of Fighters that I know he also does he's also anxiety in depression and areas like that so I just wanted to kind of get his views on the combat side and other sides because uh it was Nate and I came across uh came across him true so um how are you thank you for joining me and and what led you into the line of work you're in well thanks David for having me because uh you know I wasn't expecting to give me a call but uh you know from from seeing all the work you've done I really appreciate us great um well I suppose to bring you to bring it back a little bit um Julie may ask my question my clients the questions okay so never on this side of the fans that much so uh I think it might be useful just to kind of give a background to why I got into it in the first place um might be useful for any of the guys I'm working with or of any any uh you know inclination to give me a call um so I was in London for several years before covet I was working over there and I was working on a job the manager was quite uh you know kind of full-on kind of stressful job and next thing uh 2020 came around and was actually just at that point that um I finished up on that job so next thing covet happened it was March 2020 full lockdown in London I was living on my own in a flat in London and so couldn't leave couldn't leave the flat um and they ended up Contracting Colvin actually so in the flat I couldn't do much at all and I ended up not sleeping so I was wasn't I was losing sleep and the next thing just it kept swearing so um a long story short um I ended up the I'm the I just left the flat one night and I was in a really bad kind of Memphis State um and what through London and because the streets were completely empty it was like a ghost town right so the state I was in at the time was um what I now know as a from working with doctors and safuza um called the cute and transient psychosis so basically and then no previous history of any other snow previous history of any of that sort of I had you know gone through depression and boats of depression anxiety previously and I should just say before that with the whole job and finishing up I was in a very very anxious State and I mean very stressed it um pretty much involved in antidepression as well just in a bad way right um so um walking through London um and you know uh because of the psychosis it was it was in a bad state to hallucinating and whatnot um and the next thing um got stopped by the police and um because of this all with psychosis you end up you lose touch of reality is basically um the definition of it um and it's a it's a mentally ill state right um so I ended up uh you know no previous convictions but ever so uh I ended up just breaking this uh thing just a door into building site and thinking that this whole story in my head there was something in this building site whatever um so got arrested and got taken to the cell and I had no no aggression or nothing like that there was no nothing like that but it was um held in the cell for 48 hours and like first of all that they're not supposed to do that right because of covet and everything or whatever and they they there was a wrong move right and the state I was in there was no support no nothing um so they actually went on to uh to court then straight away from that cell and because again the state I was in I was in court and I refused any like helps like from a solicitor so I said look um I'll go in myself into the court in London and um because of this the state I was in and again no sleep in those two days in a cell and I mean like no sleep at all right so um the George uh thought he was part of this whole kind of uh non-reality in my mind um and so he said right okay so I'm giving it eight weeks in prison uh suspended sentence to four weeks right so um during lockdown uh it went to hmp team State Prison and I was I spent four weeks in there um and still in this uh State uh Memphis State um so with no support Again by the way um and the after four weeks it was 23 and a half hours locked on within the prison itself so there's no communal area no because of covet right no communal area no time no meeting people none of that um and no support or anything so just and it just got into a complete rock bottom right so where you know again no sleep so just exacerbate and everything um so mentally I suppose as close to L as you can get right um and after the month anyways it was released and thankfully I had support right so uh my family were there and um so after about a week then I had a really bad break because of the prison thing and because of no support I had another I had a really bad break and uh thankfully they're saying that ambulance came which you know I should have been in the hospital the first time around um and they took me a day and a year about got help there and I I ended up having to spend a month in the hospital from there um and that really helped right get back on track um I needed that probably from the start and um after that I had support over there again no none of this had ever happened before none of this uh so I was very lucky to come out of that without because sometimes Lads don't come out back of that rate um so I um had support over there I ended up because of the judge as well he was like you know so severe which will get to give me a year probation so I wanted to get out of there get out of London get close enough to home so we'll move to Derry um and from there just really I was given been told to put on uh you know anti-psychotic medication and I just knew that that wasn't me right I knew that there was other ways around it so I started getting weekly constant and it was just a guy in an Irish guy in London was doing a resume called he was just exceptional absolutely exceptional and um I was apprehensive about Psychotherapy and counseling and anything like that beforehand so he really com he changed my life really you know he really got me back uh into a great place now in parallel to that I was uh back trained and sort of stopped um I stopped uh you know there was no I just went uh you know by the way I just want to say that medication Daphne is a place you know for people and it definitely does serve a purpose but I knew the things that led me to the breakdown I had so I knew that was if I got to sleep right got me uh diet right nutrition did all the main things right that I could get myself back on track and so it took work and effort and I did and um at the time I just couldn't believe what had happened to me so um I wanted to understand it so I had everything I could on um you know on eurosense really and how the brain works and how these things happen um and I wanted to actually go and pursue Neuroscience um and but because of the effectiveness of the Psychotherapy and the council let me get them I I really you know I was kind of between both So speaking to my own psychotherapist he said look um you know there's a there are there are options that combine both um and one of them was this course that I found which combined neuroscience and hypnotherapy um and I at the time I was in a much obviously much better State and so I went to pursue that and and parallel that I just want to say that um we had to put a case against the the British police and government if you like and um so we went to court and the solicitor I had was brilliant so we went through all the evidence and went to court and and the judge that was um looking at the case said that it was though he actually used the booklet that the solicitor had given in my case all the evidence and everything he took that said and I'm using this as an example because it's the worst it's the worst case um it's the worst treatment mistreatment of an individual that he's seen in years from the police and from the judge um so uh case was completely dismissed no no all charges dropped none of that but I mean very lucky again like really lucky to come out of that you know even more looking at it in a better place you know a much better place um than I did go and end it that's for sure so you know it's a bit a bit of an extreme kind of scenario but it did really you know I I'm actually somewhat thankful that it went the way it did because you know it took me to where I am over to read before um so pursued this course and absolutely loved it and and the guy um qualified in it and the guy you're practicing from the starts with practicing though like straight away from the start so it's been uh you know close to three years now so um the guy who actually created the uh the the um qualification himself uh was a cycle analyst psychotherapist thousands and thousands of hours under his belt um and he actually was um Glenn Catholic the WC WBC uh uh middleweight world champion um and he coached him as a hypnotherapist for um there was I think it was over a year um and he ended up winning that title as an underdog so and then after that he worked with Steve Collins Against Chris Eubank so while I was working on this um uh working on uh you know this qualification I just knew when I was learning that this is just absolutely made for Elite well they're made for individual athletes as opposed to teams Now teams that's no but specifically individual driven athletes and just knew that this was um a great a great framework um very effective and sure enough I started working with um track athletes and working with uh footballers and working with um uh Judo guys and then I just really you know things started from there started moving from there so that's a long-winded story with a little bit of a box but oh and it's an interesting so as well because obviously when Paul became it was it was a strange time for everyone and I wouldn't say you're the only one that were in situations you were in and exactly that if you've never been there before or people don't like if someone had a kid like they came across you I just got he's just a bit mental that's it you wouldn't really like um well as for the police I know like the police forces are trained in certain ways and certain things but I wouldn't think spotting something like that but like when you see someone who you think might be mentally unstable would it be not like a care of Duty to then maybe bring someone in to see what your mental state is like before one they lock you up for 48 hours in a Cell because God knows you could potentially hurt yourself like obviously you didn't but there might be people that could potentially hurt themselves is that not something that they should be changed trained in in your opinion yeah so 100 and there's a the locally and that was part of the case and part of the evidence that luckily for us one police guy one policeman um wrote in the in the log before I went into prison uh he he wrote that he didn't believe that it got sufficient um psychiatric attention um and it was that statement that really um uh the judge really honed in on as well um uh so uh to answer your question I mean um I think that's why the judge made an example of this because their resources are just so um so relaxed and they you know but it's an education thing I think you know we're just not educating what to look out for um and it is a real tricky one the state I was in uh it's not it's not quite it's not as obvious as they may think you know but definitely that one thing was one of the policemen said he should have you know definitely needed another assessment and that that was a large part of the evidence that went in my favor thankfully you know um so yeah yeah so then obviously you think obviously he spotted that and actually he physically wrote it down which means he spotted he's seen it you think then there should be some sort of procedure then behind that for them to say okay they uh paid police force off the state they have a duty of care to the citizens of that of that state so you would think that obviously that like you said it's it's a process though because every day something evolves or just something new so hopefully it's something that they will uh act on and then make procedures then off the back of that so because like I said you were okay you've come out okay now and and what you're doing now is fantastic but there might be other people who would have went the other way and went further into it with something like that then locked into a small self 48 Hours When You're Sober let's say isn't a nice thing not in one room after the the length of time being in inside because of covert as well and then being locked into this model whereas obviously you're in a flat you can move around a bit but then you're down to this one and you said obviously you talked about prison there as well like there was no accumulators like was there like just no communication with anyone at all like did you have no obviously you couldn't have physical contact but was there any like verbal communication well you had um well it was yeah the 48 hours and the holding cell was bad but I mean the the months like long stint in the in the prison cell was um particularly uh rough but potential question because of covert they were it was it was half an hour um you went into the yard but everyone you know you were all the distance everything and then the odd group and you could mingle or talk at a distance but um you know uh yeah just the the mental state I was in at the at that time um it just he couldn't he literally could not get a you know more uh an appropriate environment you know to put it like that so yeah yeah because it's not it's not the nicest place to be regard of of the state you were in um when you said that you'd actually gone there I I was thinking whoa that's a bit harsh for for what was like there's people out there getting away I don't want to say about murder but like there's people out there getting away with a lot of things you you see them over I I don't know what it's like up North but especially down south there's a lot of serious cases and people are getting suspended sentences and you're just like yeah okay well how come just like I got two years for something small and then this that was done something major I think that's that's a whole nother conversation to have on another day it is um because there is a lot of problems Within as there is an argument but we move on obviously you said it was literally said it was it was a boxer who came up with this uh which is called with his qualifications and he went on with Steve he was a he was a cycle he was a Seiko analyst but he and a hypnotherapist but he worked with boxers oh okay he created he created this um he created this um uh suppose modality of uh solution focused hypnotherapist hypnotherapy and he started working with boxers improving the concept with Elite individual boxers and Combat Sports guys and you know he worked with uh went on to work with Olympians and everything so um and he was well renowned one of the best in the UK for sports hypnotherapy um and yeah I just you imagine he was a boxer I thought that I got that wrong way no no that's that's my fault um yeah so obviously will he create it and then you went into you mentioned obviously you went back to England was it that just training in a commercial gym or did you train a Combat Sports or some sort of sports before so first of all it was just uh getting in the gym getting running getting just getting the the endorphins going getting the dopamine serotonin all those good things going in the body and um uh really getting back into um a good state right so physically moving physically is a good way to start the process of getting mentally healthy right um and then after a couple of weeks um I was like great I want to get involved in something in the area right get meeting people and things um and I've always wanted to do uh Jiu-Jitsu and so I did um I train the boxes before but it was purely training purely for the uh Fitness but I absolutely loved it um so I just uh was certain Jiu Jitsu James and dairy and just Torres look Dean Torres looked brilliant right so um give uh Maria call Martin McLaughlin and uh he said yeah come on down so um went down there and it was just absolutely loaded and started um and uh was actually uh used to train sometimes during the day uh you know during lunch time I remember going in one one day early and Marty was there was just playing the mats getting ready for the session and uh we just got chatting and he was asking you know what are you doing I said oh well I'm doing a clinical therapy and working with uh athletes at the minute as well actually he actually said look um it was one I can't remember it was one of the titles he he won he said look um I did uh you know I've been playing I've been preparing for this title did all everything right food and everything but it was one thing one thing he said that got me over the lane with that title and that was hypnotherapy so when I heard that it was it was great and he said look I'll I'll give you a hand you know I'll support you or if you want to just send me a um send a you know a fire or whatever and he'll post it on on Facebook that I'm available to to work with guys and lead up to competition or January right um so then that just it started really and that was like uh in terms of the combat side already been working with athletes and doing you know get seeing good results there um but no this was something I was really interested in loved it um and uh the next thing one of the guys Tony McLaughlin um he was I think it was purple belt at the time yeah and we started working together and he was preparing for Vegas the ab jjf in Vegas World Championships and we worked together for four weeks after that and he got he got silver and that so um then that just more guys started to start giving me give me a call from there so yes it was uh sorry it's been great my own Jiu Jitsu Journey hasn't been going so good and blowing out knee already yeah yeah but it was good obviously you got into the gym and it was good that actually my head said that she said that's what got him across because I think it's been overlooked it's called a lot in my interviews lately obviously Nate was one I think you know Brian Moore that fights in Bellator he said that was his problems he not that he went on a losing streak but he he couldn't get the finish and one of the psychologist says was it wasn't until he got hit hard that he woke up so now they kind of he gets a bit of a slap before he goes out to kind of to kind of get him and and I felt like that it's I think his chair someone says that fighting is like 90 my uh mental and like 10 of it because if you you want to be an elite athlete you're gonna train the best you're gonna eat the best you're gonna do what you can to win but that's what separates is that is that mindset like is there cases that you've heard because I've heard of it a lot with the with the industry I'm in is that people in the gym I've seen them in the gym and I've talked to people said like like I see him in the gym but when he comes to to white day you can't replicate that is that something that you get a lot of where people come and [ __ ] yeah so first of all I think it that's your question yes it definitely happens um and it is common um but Fighters uh every every client every client is different right they all come with uh um they're like mental blocks right so some might be coming off the back of the losses right some might be exactly what you're saying uh real animals in the gym in terms of training when it comes to competition time fighting um uh they're just everything's been overthinking caught up in their own mind stressed they've got to factor in things like wake up nutrition all these um other variables that can add things stress so they're training for um they're they're training really hard training really really well but they don't have all these kind of other variables to think about as well um so when it comes to right date yeah there's just added stress and there's also like there's a bit of a sometimes it can be you know um comfort and knowing that you know I know what to expect when in the training and then you you're completely out of um not just a comfort zone but um there are so many other factors and elements to factor in so you've got um I mean other coaches just the venue itself lights other coaches uh kids professional setup um commentary so on so audience so on so forth so yeah it that can add a lot of um uh added stress uh to the to Fighters uh to answer your question yeah because one of the things that I I kind of am interested in when I'm asking Fighters is is the fight day itself it's a big day like you said there's the audience commentary there's a lot of things going on you have to warm up there's different people around and I wanted things I always found or I was curious about is they have to get there early because you've got your Medicals and stuff like that the time between they get their Medicals because obviously I say the show stuff they have to get their Medicals there too like and just say Nathan for example would be higher on the cab so he's gonna be later on the couch so he might be 10. I need to feel that space you think like like that would obviously be a problem as well and how people manage it I would presume yeah so that is well I mean I suppose for example that that that exact example is um we prepare for that right so say a client comes to me right again it's complete confidentiality it's not going to pick uh top winning and specific but every client's different they're dealing with some thing that um has uh they just they want to settle a candle mind get into um uh not be overthinking and get into the mindset that they want before the fight so we start off the first session is we uh I ask questions get to know what it is exactly that they're they're having challenges with um so for example it can be just overthinking and then it can be doubts um so doubts around uh you know they're reading a lot into the opponent right always bigger he's faster it looks he moves fat he moves fast with me he's could be more skilled he's very confident speaks well soon then you know that all plays into another example could be off the back of losses so frustration going into after loss is going into it going into um uh training with not being able to concentrate on what the coaches are saying because they're frustration from the losses and things like that um and there are other examples there that can also be outside of competition right it can be things like family scenario it can be things like wake up I can't make weird I really struggling to make weight um and someone could be job can work could be Financial right so all these different things um so get to know it get to know them in the first session um and another question is you know what do you want to achieve or come here are you working with me so we talk about goals and we talk about what you want to achieve and you know what kind of how do you want to be after work with me and and through working with me so you might say things like oh I just want to be in a calm State leading up the fight um I don't want to be uh over saying I don't want I want to sleep well because it sleeps a huge part that we emphasize in the first in the first uh um sessions and um just been in not be intense about to fight in the lead up to so being relaxed and storing that we don't we don't look at change and like the fight the the fight and spur of them and they're a fight in mind so that's not what it's about at all um it's about the the thoughts that are getting in the way of focus so we're thinking constantly about over about the opponent and think constantly about the preparation but the but um cutting weight and so on about winning and and and uh and so on um you're taking away the emphasis on just being in the moment being present being focused and listening to what the coaches are standing in the week or two leading up this fight um and then we the second or third session can sometimes typically have nothing to do with fighting right so we don't look at the care don't we don't talk about fighting at all we look at small elements outside of kids outside of training in the day-to-day like that we can work on that if we got if we got right would have a positive impact and that they would be willing to train him with a you know on whether whether more positive frame of mind the more clear calm focused frame of mind um and then we start the next sessions working on uh the fight specific stuff so we um it's not just visualization a lot of people you know think about just visualizing this uh this fight going well and things like that it's uh there's a lot more detail involved where we create like um a journey right so it can be from a week out from a fight we start there even two weeks it depends every Friday is different as I said some might struggle two weeks so it still makes Provo a week out more so so I mean struggle I mean that might be Talent more challenging for them so we start looking at um right how do you want to be feeling a weaker to uh same thing just calm relax just going into training like it's another training session um and we work through very uh detailed questions and to answer your question one of them is right that big wit in between um after I register in the building and uh until I'm called the cage what in between and we really look at that and we try and we really play out the story so I'm just going to go I'm going to do a little bit of warm-up and just get laid on my toes want to put on music when I sit in a corner um and again this could be these uh this these questions I sit with them in the third session to really go through and answer all these questions in great detail so there's three parts that um there's them answering these questions in great detail this next session is really reading them back to them so uh and this is about the subconscious mind right so that's what we really work on so the subconscious mind is the really powerful part and that's the part that we program that's the part that we use to solidify our mindset our thoughts right um and by first of all them telling me how they want to be before during and after a fight during is also a big one where we really if they're working on a strategy or in a game plan we really hone in on that and look at it from different angles really focus in on um even you know reactions to the unexpected uh because it's so unexpected can be obviously unpredictable how you react to that so for example we weren't you weren't prepared for something that the opponent does um how do you react to that do you panic and then the whole strategy everything was out to window or do we just take a step back breathe get back into the game plan so we're going to be really detailed in that in that section um and then third parties and we can end the hypnosis right so hypnosis many people can think what the hell is hypnosis you know but in actual fact it's hypnosis like it's trans so it's it's actually like a date you can imagine a Daydream a lot of people don't realize this but we go into Daydreams many times during the day and we're walking running watching TV driving we do it all the time it's and hypnosis is just a really uh concentrated and focused and directed form of trance and daydream um and when we're in that state then we have access to the subconscious mind and that's where uh we I create a script from what the answers that the client is giving me to the questions and we create the script and read it back to him when he's in that hypnosis state and um that's recorded them to record that so sake at 25 30 minute recording um and again back to your question that space in between we've already gone through we've already played through this and several times and I'll give them specific time to listen to the recording structure times to listen to it and one is one is actually during that time so the fact that we've gone through and played it so many times that the purposes uh to not have these things uh create any additional stress and to be able to focus on Game Plan Focus on um what we need to be focus on a long-winded answer yeah no I like it because like that you need it because if you just gave a brief answer people you don't understand so one of the things that I'm kind of curious about as well actually is you were mentioning obviously you work with individuals and and can work with teams and uh not well you didn't really touch on things but I I would presume a team would be harder with an individual like you get to know the person because on a team there's maybe 11 15 individuals so like how do you really get to know that person like what is this involved let's say in the first meeting and and from a first meeting would you know if a person is a good fit for you or or is everyone a good fit or just all just about the first meeting like how that goes and how you make your mind up on on what's next for them yeah so um yeah it is a bit different to the teams first of all um it's not that I wouldn't or don't work with teams it's I just uh individual athletes that are Elite individual athletes um it's bringing the work with them because it's it's very it's more precise and concise with a team you've got so many individuals different characters it's just there's a there's a lot more uh variables and and things like that too um so the first session um yeah really getting to know uh the client themselves so um figure out what it is exactly that uh they want to achieve by working with me first of all so what is it and are they have they got a fight coming up right so usually um a good um kind of road map for work on the mental side is four to five weeks sometimes six out from a from a fight um because in that time we get uh typically a size in a week um but that first session um yeah we really get to know about and get just general information gathering as well um getting the no interest getting to know um life outside of um life outside of combat Sports and fighting and um then a real key is um there's an educational knowledge this in that first session and so for example explain how the main works right so if someone for example is common they're overthinking everything uh it's just negative it's self-doubt right so doubts about am I good enough to beat this guy though it's about am I going to make weight and all this um and sometimes that can negatively affect sleep so um we look at the mind in in two ways um one being the intellectual uh part of the mind which is a human part of the mind and that's the part that we focus on uh getting and working on because intellectual mind is focused it's clear thinking but most of all it's a problem solver and it's rational as well when when when we're in that frame of mind when we're operating from that part of the mind we're able to absorb all the techniques skills everything in our client or our coaches are telling us strategies um much better right so it's all much better we memorize it much better and we're able to pull from it much better um and there's the other part which is the Primitive part right and this is the part that we've had for thousands of years caveman cave women and this is the survival part of the mind right and this is where fight or flight comes from so there's three main parts of that primitive mind or primitive brain and in the brain in terms of formation there's three main parts uh there's a amygdilla which is responsible for that's the security guard it's constantly looking out for um uh danger and that's where fight flight freeze comes from right so we explain fight fight Freeze in relation to that client specifically um and also there's a hippocampus which is to do it's like the filing cabinet the memory center of the brains where we store bad habits and appropriate behavioral experiences patterns um fears and phobias um so that's where things are stored like a constant doubt before a fight right because it's a pattern right um so we interrupt that first of all with in the subsequent sessions and then we have the hypothalamus which is responsible for regulating the camera goes through the body so that's uh it releases adrenaline to adrenal glands and cortisol as well and cortisol is a stress home which is very important actually when it comes to weight cut there's cortisol because it's a stress response it is a hormone which it it makes enables the body to store fat and it does that because back in the day in the jungle didn't know when the next meal was so when Lads are stressed and cortisol throughout the body very difficult to well it can be very difficult to cut with without and in a cam way and not being stressed right so we really look at the that primitive mind in particular because that's where the negative thinking and the self-doubt the self-criticism criticism come from and it's also where black and white thinking comes from so it's all or nothing this perfectionist uh mindset comes from which can actually really get in the way of uh fight fighters preparing for fights um because uh if if a train assassin doesn't go well or unexpectedly and they'll lead up to a fight um a training partner gets won over on your and ends up training well you can leave that session maybe two weeks out from fake on Geo he just beat me and I've got this guy who's way better in a week's time how does that happening then all adults start flooding and it's that main the Primitive brain it just keeps us locked into this negative cycle so we end up going to sleep well trying to go to sleep with these negative just thinking constantly thinking about that bad training says how did that like get me when I've got this much better professional if or just a much better standard athlete in a few weeks time um so I learn and giving the clients an understanding of where these thoughts and stresses and go to read in it it's really like it's so empowering to them um because they can it's like they know where it's coming from and so we work on uh working in that intellectual part of the Mind the front part of the brain and that's kind of our focus and we do that um through a number of you know different ways but in terms of Neuroscience there's three p's quite simple uh positive interactions positive actions positive thoughts and it's not about just doing the positive thoughts I'll be fine just thinking a way out of like a performance anxiety it doesn't work so it's proactively uh thinking it's proactively um interacting positively with others being active and taking action so that can be like not procrastinating on things so yes Fighters are brilliant at getting into the gym getting like training their training no one's going to work harder than me in the gym and that's fair enough they do the work to ex an extreme level um what they might go home then and just be potentially just you know scrolling through the day on Facebook or whatever while you know things around them you know the house isn't their their environment might be messy or whatever so in actual fact it's just these small things that can make a big difference because you feel when you get your environment kind of uh neat you end up getting control so um what this does is and positive thinking as well so we we really concentrate on before going to sleep I give a record as well after first session so it's a recording for sleep so Ram sleep which is rapid any movement that's the part that really processes all the negativity from throughout the day so before we go to sleep concentrate on goals concentrate just for five minutes concentrating on goals concentrating on excess and concentrating on being at our best cutting weight and what that does brings you into sleep so you've got eight hours the subconscious mindness processing just that last five minute window before you go to sleep so it really has a beneficial um uh part in the process um but also those three p's that I was talking about and when you do these things and when you get things organized gives you gives you um chemicals are released in the brain which is called neurotransmitters and neural modulators like serotonin dopamine oxytocin endorphins these make us feel a lot better makes us feel in control serotonin for example makes us feel Brave or actually for a fighter you know that's brilliant because you know you can try things different things and training that you may not try before without worrying about them um but also dopamine dope means a funny one because there's different forms right there's cheap dopamine you get that from drinking drugs gambling right so it's cheap heads of dopamine doesn't do much at all and then there's the real dopamine that you get after that tough training session that maybe you didn't want to go to right in the first place you're like oh I just don't feel like saying today you go to the training session the next thing you might have gone thank God I want that train and say so that's chemicals in the brain dopamine serotonin and they don't happen when you're in that primitive negative mind so we're just concentrate in that give the fighter a level of um understanding first of all um and that they can bring that on from Beyond that next fight that we're working towards um so it's like a mindset there straight away right I'm stressinger because that part of the brain is kicking in um no and saying that for a fighter the Primitive ring is very it's we want to we want to use that right because that's where the white the Wild Side comes from so it's not about we don't we don't take away and there is some misconceptions with this that oh if I go to see someone to talk about the mind a lot of Fighters are very confident right um and they think oh if I go and talk to someone about this they'll lose me fighting AIDS I'll lose I'll lose that fight um but it's not the case it's actually enhancement so it's um we're we're creating space getting rid of all those other doubts and all the stresses leading up to fight so that you can focus more on the fight itself um so we don't look demonic we don't look to control our primitive brain because it's extremely powerful and emotional right because when anger is where frustration everything comes from so we don't look to my uh control we look to manage it so um that we can actually use it to Advantage so keeping it at Bay for the run-up to fight is brilliant because when that's kicking in it we lose so much energy because it takes up our energy in negative ways so when we have that nice and cam and managed we then we really work on using it to Advantage in the fight and we're in the cage you can let loose some Fighters and that's where Fighters are very different um they all have different strategies and different ways they want to finish some constant submission some concentrating on I just want to I just want to knock and clean out and we're just really concentrate on that so um it's about enhancing not about taking anything away yeah yeah you know and I like that and there's a couple of things that interested me there actually one year that if they if they go see you it might it might take away and like battle and that's what I always wondered with the mental side was it like an ego thing because you see Fighters they're big strong Like Gladiator type people and they're fighting and to go and see someone that would be considered like uh for like mental health not mental health but like uh therapist or something like that would would that be something that would damage their ego I would think that's what a lot of people might have taught going years but obviously you can see that shift changed and especially with the likes of men's mental health has really come on Leaps and Bounds in years where yeah or it was just get on with it whereas now it's still not where it should be I think but no right um your environment as well someone said that to me before if you go to a person's house and you go into the bedroom that will kind of give you an idea what they are and someone then said if you wake up in the morning make your bed because you're then preparing yourself for the rest of the day to have a good day and if you don't have a good day you go home and your bed's made anyways you can get into it and it's nice um but the and well as the cortisol levels this is just out of my curiosity is that because someone is that what someone was saying for but I might be confused coffee you're not supposed to drink coffee for a certain time in the morning because your cortisol levels are high or is that something that's I'm actually confusing it with um I I'm not I'm not a nutritious uh do myself any favors but I I don't know about the cortisol I know that uh you know there's a there's a an energy system that I know what your spike is talking about I don't think that's cortisol Maybe I'm Wrong levels in the morning there's a lot out on coffee but um yeah they so yeah the the one of the what what can the remained there was and it won't made me saying it because it was on your podcast it was on your podcast that Nathan was saying I just I left my ego say and I I contacted him so I'm like that can you know every Fighters the whole thing about the leader ego at the door and all ligue is a good thing right but when side of control that's when it can be detrimental or you know so it's always good to have a wee bit of it because you know confidence can come from that but um I mean um yeah it there's still so you've seen the thing recently with with Tom Aspen you know it was it was it was great then some other big examples obviously Mike Tyson I think that was kind of the original um most uh uh I suppose famous example uh of uh hypnotherapy been used a customado he he himself um studied hypnotherapy and he got a he brought Tyson to the guy since he was 14 and he they just just constantly you know played and I played and not playing and and worked on his mindset um and yeah you can see about the the example of Tom Arsenal you met you see him when he was in those interviews leading up to the previous fight uh against uh taburra um he he was emphasizing that he mentioned about the room there's not just about you know Titan although that that is part of it he was saying he was emphasizing I've got all these things I would say of fighting lined up so you're saying no no drinking um like friends who weren't um you know on the same level as and who were you know uh distracting them or um and so on so it doesn't just have to be I just use the cleaning thing as an example but it can be many other things it can be yeah it really can it can be uh work as well work and play in there because you know amateur guy is looking to get up the professional sometimes working just getting away from uh you know and they just don't like it but they go to an enemy so they can look at ways of uh just using you know reframing that reframe and how they see work um so there's loads of different um things I would say of the fighting outside of training that really has a massive impact uh a kind of a massive impact on how you show up the trim and when you're in that training how you're interacting how you're absorbing the information um and you do that over a number of times um it can have a massive impact um positive impact use um you get to the Great analogy uh I've always thought it's a brilliant analogy for this type of work as well like you're not going to go from Wipeout the blue belt after a couple of sessions right and so when with work like this it's the same thing it's about it's not a it's not magic it's none of that there's work involved as well so each day doing the things that you might not like to do so that can be all those things that I mentioned before and over time these things have a very part it's a compositive feedback loop then then you show up the training you're just in a great frame of mind show up to show up to um the fight and you're just you're you're just raring to go um and that Gap that you're talking about in between it's just doesn't you know Lads um they embrace it then just as a relaxing thing yeah like um your job is very interesting I say it's very fulfilling I don't envy you because like you so many people like you said the way to say me and Nathan came in we're two completely different people and the way one affects him might affect me differently and for you to be able to try and identify what that is obviously you've got the knowledge and the skills behind it but like that I thought just say a 40-hour week for me and 40-hour week for him I might love my job he might hate his job how does that affect him like just that's what really interests me um how you're able to break that down and make people taken and like you said when Nathan said he left the ego at the door and you can see a lot more have you noticed in in the short space of time that you're doing this that it is getting more prevalent that people are coming to to see it that they might have mental blocks that they might call have you seen a rise in recent in your short time that you've been doing it yeah absolutely yeah um yeah yes is the answer and um a think well first of all like I absolutely love it I love the fact that I'm dealing with all these as it's very very interesting because you know different there's all different characters and Fighters are unique themselves right all different backgrounds all different reasons why they're uh Fighters all different levels of that fight within them right and it's because of their backstory so getting to know the backstory is getting the no and everything about them it's actually I absolutely love it um and that's kind of why I'm focusing um on this and focusing on the Combat Sports and working with uh athletes and not just professionals amateurs looking to go professionals and all in between as well um so I absolutely love it and uh I want this you know it's it's great yeah and the more obviously um things like people I work with getting their uh Podium places getting their goals getting their titles um you know that is obviously people see that maybe what you know again I've been getting messages from like really good Fighters uh some professionals going what's the simple therapy thing um so yeah it's it's great it has been great and I think it's I think you know with the this with the work you're doing by the way I mean it's really watching the Irish scene is unbelievable at the minute um and if I can uh you know uh help guys get the best of themselves in terms of getting blocks taking blocks away um stresses relax getting into a good Mainframe for fights then that's really what I want to do if I can be involved in the you know everything getting better 100 yeah yeah thank you for the kind words uh first of all and like if anyone gets on to me about this interview because when I post it we post Instagram I put a link to it and like that if anyone can ask you directly uh the scene isn't a really good place at the minute I think just just little things but there's one thing I want to ask about because like I said I would love to do your job I just don't think I have the brain power to do your job you know that sort of way I think everybody has this everyone has a story I think that's why I like doing what I do and some people I find can be quite guided at first and then second third time talk to me it comes out and that doesn't just go for Fighters everyone has a story but they just want someone to tell it to and they have to get that person to to tell it to but one thing that I think is really would really be fulfilling for me when you see these people get these medals win these fights like Nate when he went to the four nations he bet two guys that are just about to go pro like combined 38 fights between them where I believe this was his uh sixth so like the two guys he bet were were extremely high level so everyone looked late and I thought he's the underdog like when you see something like that although he came off short in the final but he had lost in Derry which is his home uh he's asked for the title in Dairy as well so he's lost for two titles in there I believe and he'd just he was on a two-face kid and obviously he's turned that around he won the two and he lost one how does that make you feel as a person not just as the hypnotherapist how does it make you feel as a person inside when you see he's done that and when you see people get gold oh well I mean you know I have a sport and background myself uh so I went in this you know that's first of all how do we win that's the first thing like you know it's not yes getting the relieving the stress and so but winning is like how to get these how do I work these Fighters get them to win that's it um uh yes I've done all the physical preparation everything and that's just how can I work with them to get them to that next level mentally um so that they can be at their best really but like professionally um I it's a bit different this because they shouldn't really be getting uh as as excited as when they're seeing Nathan getting the two wins it was uh you know how to brilliant uh no uh and saying that um you know I again every fighter is different I'll be working on obviously a professional level um so yeah it I mean it really it's brilliant when they see that um but uh yeah it's just that's I suppose that's what Elena we're getting into if they can if I can help them get those wins then it's brilliant but um again I don't want that guys to think off and working with some guy I can't work with another guy um we might be in conflict of interest in some way it's not the case but um I suppose Nathan being in Torres the team think maybe but like that I think there's like nutritionist I don't know if you know Yannick McGee that's what he said like he sometimes will be the news for two fighters and what like he'll say like I'm straight down the middle like I'm not gonna give like this is his livelihood obviously that would be the same with you and and he said absolutely like excited but like I know there's a professional side but like the professional side I would assume the reason why you got into that professional side though is to help people get those goals and that is obviously going to give people a personal feeling which like people say oh well you have to say like it's hard to separate it's like when I see Irish Fighters fighting when they're fighting each other go out and whoever wins wins I don't take sides but when you see an Irish Fighter fighting in the UK let's say like I get real excited like when Becky McLean came back from his injury and a cage Warriors like I was on the edge of the receipt for that like I was on here I didn't go there as media I actually went and had a few drinks to enjoy myself because people you just get to say why well like what I like to do is talk to them get story with them you go to those shows oh how was the fight how is this you're gonna ask same questions someone else but I think it's hard like sometimes when you've seen someone go through so much and then come out the other side well it's uh it's good yeah yeah look I I love it I really do and uh as I said you know there's you know when I work with guys they only you know only reason mention Nathan I don't is because you had the podcast with them and you mentioned it but uh it's you know working with older guys it's obviously um complete confidentiality as a given you know but um definitely I would be keeping it you know keeping an eye on if they've got a big upcoming fight I'm not gonna not uh be interested so I understand that's why I wanted to get you on because obviously Nation Nate and mentioned it I seen you would post it as well because like that a lot of people might not talk about what they've done and it's good that he's going to talk about it that's why I wanted to have this conversation with us so people can understand it a bit more because people make a wasp like what's this what's that so hopefully this will give people a bit more of a base understanding um it's given me a bit more of understanding probably a couple more questions but I think I'm going to do a follow-up or two in maybe a couple of weeks time if that's it um is there anything you want to say before you want to go before you go well I mean first of all I just really appreciate it because you know getting into this for the social media thing you know the consistency with what you're doing is unbelievable so in all the work that goes goes into that so fair play and I appreciate you bringing me on honestly that's the script um I mean if anyone wants to get in touch or no more uh set your head and on Instagram and I'll get in touch and you set up a short call and figure out how we're going to work together for a good fit and take it from there um but yeah thanks a million great work you're you're educating me a lot in the area scene too so it's great perfect like I said thank you again for the kind words it's been an absolute pleasure to talk to you uh I've learned a lot from this like I said I would like talk to you and like I need to process a lot of what's going on today as well then come back with more questions yeah it's been a very enjoyable chat and uh I want to wish you the best luck like I said if anyone gets on to me uh I'll send them on to you so thank you very much for your time and enjoy really appreciate it thanks Dave appreciate that
