Fansview MMA interviews Gemma Coghill ahead of a kickboxing bout against Amy on an Evolution show the following week. Coghill says Evolution contacted her with the offer after she had previously declined because she considers herself an MMA fighter but has been unable to secure MMA matchups; she describes three pullouts in roughly seven weeks and frustration with that situation. For K1 prep she spars stand-up only with no clinch or grappling, and expects about an hour and a half travel to Dublin. She has studied Amy mainly via Amy’s fight with Mel on YouTube. Coghill discusses training under Dar at a newly opened gym in Gore in the Moira area, where she was born, praises his coaching, and plans a women’s class starting in January that she will lead. She says she is signing for Clown Wars in March and that an MMA fight is being lined up, with Cage Warriors as her long-term goal after an amateur MMA debut. She recounts watching Cage Warriors as a spectator for Kieran Brady and shares strong opinions on Emma’s stoppage and referee Andy Steven, while saying she gets more nervous watching friends compete than fighting herself.

Okay. So, once again, I'm here with Miss GC, Miss Chem Cogill as well. She's got her hair all done. She had her wash. We're ready to go. How are you feeling? Another kickboxing fight. Um, you've we've struggled in MMA. I tried to get you matched. So, everyone's been trying to get you matched on certain shows, so you've taken this. How are you feeling about this fight coming up? >> I'm really, really excited. You know, Amy's obviously she's really experienced and she's really good. So, I'm excited for the challenge. I feel like nobody's really put me in a corner yet and made me pull something out of the bag. So, and I think Y could be the one to do it like so I'm excited. >> And how did this match up come about? Was it you actively looking because you it's been you've been struggling to get matchups or did they come to you because you were on Artimus on kickboxing. But how did that >> No, they came to me. They wrote to me and just asked what the what the coach's page was, I think. And then I sent him and then Dar said to me that offered Amy. But I think that that evolution had contacted me before I think about going on. >> I don't know if it was for this show or a different one. I don't know. But I was like, "No, I'm an MMA fighter." But can't get anybody fighting MMA. >> So, and as well, so it's going to be next week. How's the prep going for? Because obviously you're training MMA, you want to fight MMA. How is it with your like reactions and stuff when you in the cave? Like cuz you didn't seem like you had any problems. You just you were just striking. There was but >> like your preparations you prepare differently obviously for K1 you're not going to be rested you're not going to be that how hard is it to just stick to the striking >> well like sparring there this morning I just do the stand up rounds then I don't do the the rolling or anything and then I was telling everybody sort of the rules like no catching no clinch blah blah blah just to give me more of a proper like run pretend run I don't know what you would call it um then we do strike all week anyway. So, it's just it's much the same. It's that first one was weird trying to adapt cuz I would use the clinch quite a lot. I feel like I'm quite comfortable in the clinch and using the knees and stuff. So, that was that was strange not being able to do that. >> Yeah, cuz cuz it's immediate that they break up. It's like I think you get one one strike and it's broken up the oriental rules that was on the same night you were on. I think you've got 10 seconds which might suit you a bit more, but >> yeah, >> I haven't seen that too often. It's it's very rare that people from the north actually are coming down south. So you have a bit of a drive, bit more of a journey than usual. How are you anticipating that in your preparation on the day or do you think it'll have much of an effect? >> No, I don't think it will have an effect at all. I'm just going going over the border, cause a bit of harm, and then come home again. >> Excuse me. >> Cuz what what's the travel time for you down to Dublin? And cuz usually obviously when they're up north, they're not as far as away from you as they would be. What would be the traveling time for you? Uh >> an hour and a half. Just hour and a half maybe. >> That's nothing. >> That's nothing. Nothing at all. >> Takes me longer to get cork. >> Cork's about 20 million years away. >> Six hours away from Belfast at Fair. >> Seems to me >> and they do it like this. You I've seen MMA Cork especially every week they're at a show and they could be that one person. You're like you six hours one person. It just shows uh what goes into it. But like you said with Amy, have you studied her much? have you or do you you just going to go in and do your own thing? Do >> you know what? Whenever I went on YouTube, I think I watched her and Mel's fight. That's the only one I've watched. Um it is what it is. Like I feel like she's she's going to try her best and I'm going to try my best. There's not really What else can you prepare? We're going to be punching and kicking each show. Like that's that's all there really is to it. >> And that's why I love K1. And I love the fact that some MMA shows have them inserted there cuz people who wouldn't be into MMA are there to see someone. The K1 is really really excit like you said it's just two people trying to beat the [ __ ] out of each other and that's what it's all about. But um going obviously you're not looking past Amy. There's going to be no more shows really. What's your plan for next year? Are you going to have to start looking abroad to try and get match for MMA? Like do you have a plan in place or or like with this current situation? How frustrated are you? >> I'm really frustrated. Obviously three pull outs there in the space of what 7 weeks or something at three people pulling out which is really frustrating but I trust the universe and I'm seeing it that we've moved into this new gym and all now and Dar's got different people in coaching us on different nights and stuff. So this was all obviously meant to happen for me to get more dangerous, sharpen my tools more and then I'm actually signing for clown wars in March. So I'll rally the rock then. >> Just trust >> also there is an MMA fight in the works. She will be fighting. So I'd say you can see the little smile. You can see the smile getting a little bit bigger and bigger on you. But talk to us about the new gym. Obviously Dar is someone I really respect. He had a couple of guys on Chaos. They they they had a clean sweep. talk to us about what Dar means to you as a coach and a mentor and what he means to the gym. >> Dar is fantastic. He really is. You know why? You can tell he has such like a a love just for the sport and he knows the stuff too. Like so whenever I first started I remember going down to watch one of the grappling comps. I think I was actually competing too and he done it and I says to myself at the end, [ __ ] he actually does know what he's talking about. You know like whenever they're teaching you things that you don't know and then see I was all [ __ ] well there. That was quite good. But no, he's doing really well. And I think it's been a long time coming. He's been building this for years now, hasn't he? Like new year and the the new place's class. Have you seen much pictures of it? >> No, I'm going to go on after we have this interview and I'm going to actually have a look there. I'm delighted that obviously there's so many people coming that he's had to get a new place uh new people in and like you said in different areas to make people a little bit more dangerous in different areas. So, I'm actually delighted for him cuz what he's doing is fantastic in the area cuz I I don't know it personally too well, but I've heard a lot of people can go go down the wrong road quite easily around that area and that could potentially save kids from from going down that way. >> 100%. And I think the location he's got in it's in Gore which is Morafity. That's where I'm born and bread. That's where the Morafley hoods are from like you know what I mean. So, um I think it's a good spot too. I think he will get a lot of teenagers and stuff coming in and hopefully then keeps them off the street. gives them something to work towards. >> Yeah. Know and like that to see when people break out like yourself, Jamie McCartney, Kieran Brady was obviously the original, it actually gravitates people to it. And I've seen you've actually started your own class there as well. Do you want to speak about the class, why you decided to do it and and what's involved? >> Well, it's it's starting in January and um >> see I always get women asking me I always get women saying to me, is there a women's class? And then he wasn't doing it because there wasn't enough interest in it. um in the women's class there wasn't people were interested then they weren't showing up and stuff because that's I was going to it at the very start as well um but I get people ask me all the time but it seems like women are they're more likely to come if a woman's taking it I think because it is an intimidating thing anyway like you think of fighting in MMA they're put off but then to have you surrounded by men and a man coaching you it's even more intimidating so I feel like me being there and then it's somebody they can look up to too whenever they join like do as I say, not what I do maybe, but do as I say anyway. >> That that that's my favorite saying to my son, but she look and we move. Um yeah, like you said, I think going into for anybody where it's male or female, it's intimidating and then female is more so because there's the perception of what MMA gyms are like and the complete opposite when you get in there. >> Yeah. >> But the fact that you you're having success, I know obviously you've had a lot of pull outs that will gravitate people. It was the same with Mel with hybrid arts when she started fighting uh people gravitate towards her. One of the things I noticed recently, you were actually at Cage Warriors, went over to see Kieran, I believe. Yeah. Talk >> to us about what it was like being in the crowd. I know. Obviously Kieran's the nicest guy and it was so hard to see what happened in in the manner it did. And then Emma the next week, the two of the nicest people probably in MMA. >> I know. I know. I was watching. We're sitting in training. I had it on the phone and I was like, "Fuck sake." just because she is so lovely. You just don't want to see somebody got getting hurt next leg. Sure. You don't. >> No, it was a bad stoppage in in my opinion. I I think there was >> I think Andy Steven >> there was 40 something punches through before he stopped. >> Yeah. >> You could see she was moving but she wasn't fighting back or trying to get out of or she wasn't able to get out of position. So >> yeah, >> look, I know obviously there's mistakes, but like there is people's lives at stake here or potentially damage, but talk to us about being in the crowd and watching Kon and then are you visualizing yourself being there? Talk to us about what was like being in the crowd and watching someone you know competing on a show like that. >> Do you know what I get more nervous watching the ones fighting than I do myself doing it? Especially if I know them. Like I'm near sick. Sonic Steven ever came was in there and obviously the way it played out. I was actually near Boken. It was awful to watch. You get so nervous for him cuz you know how hard it is and I know how hard he works and as you said he's such a lovely person and then for that to happen but um just being there in the crowd and all. I'm pure delusional anyway. So I'd be walking about and I'm like everybody knows I'm a fighter. I'm here you I'll be on there soon feeling like everybody's looking at me and all that's way I get on. [laughter] But but obviously with the likes of like Kon's there and you see a lot of people from Aim being there and a lot of people are going for the D Jamie Abbott had his debut there. A couple people did. Obviously there's a lot of uh scope for you to potentially make it. Is that what you'd like your step to be? Obviously you need to make the amateur debut first out this way. But is is that kind of one of the places you want to go as cage warriors? >> Oh yes the plan. And I have a plan in my head and although it's been delayed this second half, well suppose the last couple of months it's only really been delayed with pullouts and stuff, but it's all it's all going to plan and I know it's going to happen like sooner rather than later. I know it is. I'm a hard girl to ignore. I know you've got this aura about you. You've got people behind you like whenever I share something with you, it's just like like like and you've seen the YouTube, you beat Brian Manning, who I think is probably one of the most interesting people in the country in MMA at the minute. He's also the most [ __ ] riddled person in the country. Jesus Christ. [laughter] >> But it's Yeah, it's I I think there is scope for a lot of people to go there. I think K George especially the fact you were over there. They had eight fighters supposed to be fighting over two cards in the UK whereas before they used to be just on the Irish cards which is good. So if you sign there at least you know there's the option in the UK as well. But look >> I'm really really glad you have another scrap. I know it's K1. I'm going to let you go. Thank you very much for your time. Is there anything you want to say before you go? >> No, none at all. Just people tune in and watch me next week. It should be a good smash fest. I'm going to stand and bang as they wrote. Did you write or did you read the thing they wrote underneath the poster? >> No, I will after. >> You need to read it. Says Jenna. She loves to stand and bang. [laughter] >> I thought that was right. That's my next tattoo. >> I love to stand and bang. >> I love to stand and bang. [laughter] Perfect. Thank you very much for your time again. It's been a pleasure as always and enjoy the rest of your day. >> You too. Thank you.
