MMA In Depth Episode 04 features Irish featherweight Ger Harris at SBG Charlestown ahead of his Cage Conflict title defense on 23 July 2022. Harris traces his path from childhood boxing in Broadstone and kickboxing around Ballymun to grappling at Primal and long-term work with coach Owen Rody since 2011, when Harris was about 11. He says his amateur MMA debut was in 2016 or 2017 after years of gold-medal amateur success, but he and Rody stuck to a plan of ten amateur bouts before turning pro because matchmaking was difficult and COVID cost two years. Harris describes his amateur record as two decision wins, one TKO, and the rest submissions, plus IMMAF experience in Rome living alongside international teams. Now 1-0 as a pro with the Cage Conflict belt, he walks heavier (around 64 kg) and is starting nutrition work with Stephen Floyd, while continuing physio habits with Adam at Next Stage Injury Therapy and emphasizing recovery. Harris frames his career around finishing fights, chasing UFC-level legacy over padded records, and defending his belt violently against an unnamed opponent he expects to stop. He praises Rody’s chess-like coaching, names gym standouts like Gary Rooney, Kyle, and Karma Conway, and promotes a kids summer camp at the gym from 4–8 July 2022 focused on sequences and finishes.

[Music] okay so i'm here with your house today in spg charge town um you're a one and all professional fighter i just want to go to your career from the start what got you into mma and uh why and when basically when uh well force kicked off i've done a little bit of boxing as a kid or he was a open and the broadstone with me yeah i was away with richie fox and uh done a little bit left the gym then like i was in and out of the boxing club i went up to then i was playing football in town and and then i had eventually one of my mates and said to me he was joining there he was joining mma or joining kickboxing that's something when i was like like it was i was a little thing in bali one was like it was living like on air route it was like it was the best fight i know what i mean yeah and i was like i'm not having another company out of the back of me so i was like [ __ ] that like i was a little i'll go you guys really come up with me i was like yeah two right thinking why not let this fellow punch the head on me so i went up to him and then i ended up just being like he ended up playing this gym i'm like ended up like the one around the corner as the end of being a primal [ __ ] own and we were grappling and just started from there like oh perfect so obviously being from bali morning you said was that take did everybody have to fight in bad like was that no not really it was just a little thing it's like like you're a good footballer or a good hauler a good gaelic player or a [ __ ] you can fight you know what i mean and that that would be what everybody saw he judges you off when you're a kid like nevermind um i know he was always smiling out of me and so i was like a jack russell had to [ __ ] stand up for myself and give a few clatters out like part of me yeah no so going on to that you you've done the box in the kickboxing and then uh when did you make your mma uh amateur debut and tell us the feeling of what it was like actually going in like the lead up to the fight like to like waiting out the back to walk and then getting in there was like was it nerve wrecking or do you know what he we had me amateur debut and i think it was either 2016 or 2017. and i was at the main train that long boy then like we started training in [ __ ] 2011. like that's when i started up with ruddy like so so it goes out today on all the mma leagues all the competition all the jets competitions right well it won't pretty much i don't think a lot ever like i've got gold medals and all the mma competitions i don't think i had ever lost like any mma matches a couple of jiu-jitsu matches here and there well that's jiu-jitsu you know what i mean you're gonna you're gonna get caught with somebody but oh yeah yeah again they fought me like a little bit of nerves but not a major because it was like it was more like it's about time now now what i mean i'm going to get [ __ ] in here and actually pay someone up and then obviously your first one was a win um you have i believe it's ten fights amateur fights isn't it not much um were you always planning on having ten and like what made you turn pro the thing with uh radio we said make sure we get 10 but then as the years are going on like some lads are getting like having 15 20s and then like it was more like with the imaps people are getting a couple of fights a week or like they were getting couple of fights in the one week like at them competitions and then there are regional shows they were competing on them as well like uh the likes of mao maki have he like he had what [ __ ] twenty twenty seven how much after he said somebody six or something was like i just could never get for it nobody wanted that nobody wanted to put their name on steak know what i mean um yeah we always found trouble getting fights and the thing i don't know we said like we'll get we get 10 feet and then we'll move on now what i mean so that was so i had that in my head from when i was younger so once i hit the 10 mark i was like right i want to move on now yeah no that's understandable how frustrating is it as a fighter in a sport where everyone's supposed to be fighters and want to fight the best of the best that you're getting turned down amateur when you want that experience and you need that experience and then we had covered as well for two years like how how frustrating was that for you yeah it's an absolute new sense to be honest it's [ __ ] like you're getting that like yeah get seeing people putting up posts are playing we're looking for flowy weights we're looking for this we're looking for that and you're like yeah ah they're at the same now or they take the 42 days later and now that they're not and then you see them on a fully poster with a different flowy way or something like that no what i mean like a couple of times lads pulling out the week at the fight and i understand injuries and stuff but like is your blade and else yet like a acl torn are you [ __ ] whatever now what i mean or is it blame or i have a browsed home yeah now what i mean you never you never really get a full answer off them anyway or like if it was me if we had played produced ribs broken fingers too i'm still jumping in there you know what i mean yeah that's not going to buddy you today at a fight like yeah no with the adrenaline i'd say you'd fight through the pain like if they were smaller it's like like most mma lads train all year round and like you're constantly going like if you if you don't like if you have no injuries you're lucky now what i mean like you've obviously touched toward norman there's a like there's always a little niggle here and there you know what i mean it's it's nearly impossible yeah [ __ ] round around with playing ladder doubly away half you know like like a time and a half of your weight like there's nobody you don't give up [ __ ] a kilo for in this gym know what i mean and you're constantly moving around with lads you're a bit stronger than you like you're gonna pick up niggles now what i mean so it's like even like i remember from me last week i had [ __ ] me rotate i caught far was like my knee felt a little bit dodgy on me back was short and it was never at one point that i ever think to myself yeah focus on that for you and just just in case i do over niggling me back [ __ ] that now to me like if i was able to perform in the gym i'm going to go in around this young fellas day and then i'll get a sword and that's it know what i mean yeah no 100 like that as a fighter are you ever really at 100 yeah like like if you do your recovery right that's something we found in me last camp we doubled down on me recovery trying like doing the same this camp and i felt like it was more now and like some days yeah your head's not in and you're like i don't want to grow up and play and get the class tonight you go up and that's your best night in the gym know what i mean you look like [ __ ] sugar right out there yeah know what i mean what are the days yeah your head's in it and your body's not there and you go up and you get battered by blaine like all the young's now the open commerce and you're like what the [ __ ] going on here but so it's like it's it's it's finding the fine line and which days you're hitting which days you don't and what day should i be in the recovery room or like going my i was out like the whole camp last camp i was there the off-grid recovery rounds out break like just not like recoveries you're not getting rushed through it just nice chilled out like into the sauna in a nice bath intervals in through them and i found that made a huge difference to me can't know what i mean just just getting in there during the week and also doing like your recoveries during the week like like it was trying to get in we're at the physio in the gym here at adam next stage injury uh yeah next stage injury therapy in with him once a week that he's breaking down all the little niggles and stuff so so you staying on top of things like that yeah like your recovery through physios or whatever way you like to do it whether it's c swimming or whatever it's like you find that fine line that like really make these sessions right if the butt like if the body's not there probably best after hold off get into the physio then hit the next session and that's i see that more and more lately is it something that used to happen years ago as well or is it just uh more it's out there more for people to see obviously with instagram and stuff like that you see all these recovery rooms i think it should start to it's like anything north of me and people are believing it's like selling dogs now know what i mean every [ __ ] second [ __ ] has a [ __ ] french bulldog page up yeah now i mean just the way it was there's bully pages up all over the place but where the recovery realms are a bit of a hit cause there's like many football teams are around fingerless there's a recovery realm of english now how many football teams are anywhere other than mma gyms know what i mean they're going to be running through them so it's a good business now what i mean so yeah it's going to be booming anyway but i think just recovery in general i think people are being a lot smarter with things now and they're learning to look after our buddies a lot better now to me yeah i think it's just more in the sense of [ __ ] everybody's just being a little bit more clued in yeah because that's what's gonna say how long ago did you start doing the recovery and taking it that seriously because it's like when you talk when i talk to a lot of people it's just they want to train train train hard and they don't recover and recovery is a part of training essentially like how long you get into your career or were you doing it from the start like probably like i started seeing adam from when i was about 15 like i remember i got like got a little niggling me back and he was just across the road and i just went to him anytime i like i had a nail or there was something wrong and like you know when you are bleeding on your own flea i like a [ __ ] sponge or a bendy spring it's it doesn't take too much to get you fixed like and then as i like as a ground i just tried to look after the body a little bit more smarter with training partners more than anything and yeah things like that and like they're starting out and uh turning out on the airtime road and at dublin uh physical dublin like he's looked after me at like the last few years as well probably like since around the same time like so i've always been in with physios but the likes of recovery realms and stuff but yeah i'm only starting to use them now but i think it's just probably mobby and smart which i train i think you don't need to do so much recovery yeah you're not beating up your body yeah my body's not battered though even if you're putting in the heart like one thing tristan kennedy put me on to it's like if i do three days ahead make sure to have the tour day off and i think that made a huge difference like when like he he was doing me nutrition and that made a huge difference or he felt because it was like like if didn't matter like the fuel is going to fuel you anyway but it's like yeah you can do your three days hard but eventually it's like you can do five days hard yeah grant you try to do six days that's when everything unravels and or you get caught with something more you know what i mean and i found that made a big difference like understanding actually just having a whole day where you don't do what and letting the body look after itself like like recovery's in sleep anyway know what i mean so if you have the full day off and you're getting the kick in and i found that made a huge difference in camps as well know what i mean understanding right i need a day off or like mixing it up by now if i'm going to be sparring on tours then i'm obviously not going to take tour stay off i might take the tuesday off and do on monday wednesday tour stay in order yeah and then have the influence have the brakes have the recovery how was your weight do you walk around close your weight do you use a nutritionist or do you do your own nutrition uh like we're walking with stephen floyd at the moment the money i think again getting with him for this camp so he's only starting to walk with him so gonna be starting to build a relationship and probably like walk around weights my change in the future i don't know but just like previously and stuff i walked around that about like i used to walk around at like 59 kilo now i know i'm getting older and getting a bit bigger and stronger but um i used to walk around that like 60 kilo a couple of weeks out from fights like then if it like just were training for the fights i'd be around 57 kilo then week off like before the week over most lads are only coming down to blame that on the day you know what i mean um they yeah those just yeah that's more or less that yeah so you're smart with it you're not going in and cutting a huge yeah down from about cutting down from about 64 kilo now at the moment you know what i mean a little bit big alec well that's probably walking like i'm at the open me strength condition and then the last he'll come so he had never done it before this done a little bit of gymnastics when i was a kid so i always had an okay frame know what i mean um what is that yeah no yeah perfect right so i also want to touch on something you were at the imax in your amateur career as well yeah yeah yeah so talk us through that experience and what you think that has helped you going forward it to the end of your amateur career and then the start of your pro career is there anything you really took away from her uh just the level you're competing with really now i mean or like like over there was like you're in the same house like the only mad experience all you had were really like and it didn't really bother me too much and now a lot of people do like i even knew from the lads and the like the way he was like the way they were worrying about the voice and nerves and things like that it's like over there yeah living in a hotel or you're like whatever the facility is like i remember when we were in rome it was the air we were on a campsite it's like like in the hotel it's like but like the bahrain team the russian team ireland england there's like five or six different countries in in the hotel probably more and you're competing against them you're going down you're cutting weight with them like you're going down if you want to do a bit like get a bit training on the mats like there's lads down training on the mats already there's lads watching you because like at the end of the day it's like oh yeah team ireland like if oysha lads that were looking like me like me and knight and like to like to carry rooney and stuff a voice saying like how they were for you know would have kept a little loyal know what i mean and being like ah he's playing level changing a lot there in his drills or little things like that something that we like that we might be able to replicate in the warm-up of the fight or just a day or two before just like you're prepared for all that anyway but just might be something you can watch and imitate fundament i know them like all them lads and all the lads on the team because you're a team at the end of the day you know what i mean regardless here for you each other regional or not um you're gonna look out for each other aren't you so the only really like it was great to like fight a couple of times in the one week as well but i found the only like real mad experience about was like having like having hillywood on a fight not knowing who you were gonna fight and having like all these lads who are like there to fight all in the same same place same area like you're sitting in there sitting in the sauna i'm just playing 15 lads sitting on each other's shoulders in the sauna and get a star like just looking and then lads are like who are you fighting them what's your name and you know what i mean they dana they know who you are for you know already know what i mean yeah because the girl goes up on the muay next match right there like he's in here lads division and that's little things like that know what i mean oh yeah like that's the maddest thing i found about it well like little things like that never got to me you know what i mean like well smiling a face woman and i'll smash her face in the next minute like we have no problem with that no problem being best mate to someone and like if it's like someone i've trained with it's like you're not really going to fight them unless it's for the belt what if it's if it's a decided to get into the ufc or if it's like for the ufc toilet or something like you better believe when coming to take your [ __ ] head off and that's it now what i mean um for regional shows i'm not just like oh no i'm not too forced about it it's like i don't need the fight to play me next on or a lad i've done a hundred rounds with because there's a whole [ __ ] pillar for yours out there there's a whole world full of four years now i mean yeah no i understand that and that's what i think as well when you're going to professionalize your professional i think especially in the early stages less irish fighters should fight irish fighters at the early stages but like go down early stages i think they should fight each other a lot more and then obviously you'll probably move on into orlando and the uk or ireland and up north and like i don't i don't think it should matter how you're fighting your amateur career anyway obviously like when you go pro like you're a business know what i mean that's that's the way it should be looked at like you're not young you shouldn't be fighting bombs because then when it comes to taking the big jump you're not going to be ready but you have to be obviously thinking smart about it as well it's like fights that seal fights that makes sense there's no point in fighting [ __ ] like it's no point at me going over to toyland and fighting some fellow who has 700 toy fights yeah know what i mean like now they're on my head i'm gonna beat them anyway but it's like you're gonna take some damage in that for you know what i mean it's like regardless you're gonna fight like four fights smart four people who were under like like hit with one on one as well or like like we've had that like my force brought forward he took a tree until but i knew from the amateur career that he wasn't like i knew he wasn't better than me and now there's not many of them better than me out there anyway but it's like there's a difference of taking a risk you're like taking somebody who's knowing now and then only being able to fight killers you know what i mean or you can take trees and tails and ones and one-on-ones and build build yourself up and then as as you get more fleets the fights will get harder anyway you know what i mean like you could go over and fly like in russia and you can get some young players doing sambal his whole life and he's just going to hug you and hold you on the floor like that's not going to make your name look good for [ __ ] the ufc is it no definitely not and have you found obviously you fought here and he was three and two will you find it hard to get matched for your first pro fight yeah i think i had like paul had come to me with three or four fleets and like saying yeah like to me it's like well have a look i don't like i don't really need to have a big look into them and now paul and roddy will deal with that anyway i tr so if ready says a ghost know what i mean like if like to me if you showed me any name on the card i would say yeah give me a yeah i don't give a 4k what is like oy no my head like there's nobody standing like in my head i'm not going in there to win a medal or like win a competition i don't care like belts and all i do cared about yeah it's great for it's great for what like for you and for people to say yeah he's winning belts but like i couldn't care if i was fighting someone in in this realm now what i mean fun nothing because it's like i just want to be the best fighter and that's it like i want to get out there and round people stay every week if we could and that's just it like to me it's like yeah it's great like to be it's great to be a good fight like it's great to be a good fighter and to win all these belts and like have a good record knowing and now but like here we are you know what i mean like people don't talk about mike tyson and say uh talk like they'll probably talk about a skill set and stuff if that like if they know about a boxing and stuff but they're not like uh youngest world heavyweight champ bar like like his skill level like is like like some of the footwork he doing would have been up on power with like some of the stuff lemonchenko was down now who's saying this was like probably one of the best ever like for foot walkways but they say like uh he was the most vicious man to ever do it that's what i want i don't want people like there's going to be 50 world champs after me [ __ ] that know what i mean we want to be the people when they look at it enlist their world champions that fella he was a [ __ ] killer or if there's people like talking to my [ __ ] great-great-grandkids in toying know what i mean when i'm [ __ ] dead and gone to say oh your great-granddaughter was one of the most vicious people ever step in the ring because when you step in the ring like even if it goes the decision you better leave he's you better believe he's going to leave with his face round oh he's going to like he's going to be leaving there with something broken because when i go in there and i'm going in there to finish it know what i mean if i don't finish it it's not a win on my in my head it's wimble like only for mata now what i mean if it's a split decision and it's like it it was like a fairly level free in my head i want to go back and do it again know what i mean i'll give me another round because i know i can finish anybody so i don't like i want the finish for you so we want to be out here we want to make a [ __ ] name we want that we want the provo oil and one the best i'm not worried about [ __ ] like having a good record is good but i want people to say like geez this fella for all the best and if i if you lose to the like someone who's probably like in my head i'm the best so if you lose to someone on your level yeah right grant go get them the next time know what i mean because in my head if we have the belt they have to come and get it that's the only thing the belt means for me it's use have used now in the top dog now come and get it yeah no i like that as well especially with the belt because especially obviously you've got a pro belt in amateurs they talk about it's about it's not meaning much but what i say to most amateurs is if you've got the belt the top people are going to want that belt so you're going to get the best fights yeah always but to be honest that's where they see like a lot of like like a lot of lads getting like a win here and there and then they're off for the toilet like a toilet shot like loads of people saying ah this many amateur toils yeah no [ __ ] like going out of the likes like gary rooney like when like without a doubt he's one of the best floyd whites in the country he's [ __ ] i've tried during them i've poured in i hours when i'm trying to get us into our kids like like an hour to like say him he'll go out and fight anybody on his feet and everybody who has a belt yeah or it's like there's a lot of people who win amateur toilets out there who probably don't deserve amateur toils and you'll know because they lose the next one already know what i mean where we i feel there's a little bit more of it um there's a little bit more over in the uk i think for that sort of thing there's a lot a lot a lot more lads want the fight the best of the best and like like i know from seeing a force hand from a spoiler like we're trying over in a spoiler as well like the likes of marilyn and liam and scott johnson like like all them boys and all the lads in that gym they only fight the best of the best because like dean and phil would only let it be that way they don't want you fighting bumps know what i mean so and i know there's a lot a lot of gyms that think that way over there because of like by seeing them at the omaha so if like we go over there and try and i'm trying to like a lot of bodies over there and like from speaking to them and now they're mindsets like that where i speak to a lot of people over here and like some some people there but a lot more right now what i mean yeah they're not like it's like that mindset isn't there yet it's like like decide you want to avoid the best of the best but are they down to walking as well know what i mean yeah no gary's a good example obviously gary's actually never been beaten on irish soil actually when i've done my research on he's never been beaten in ireland he's only been beating the imf there he's only been beaten at the world level and like that's like like that it's a lonely like that'll stand him know what i mean that'll stand here when he [ __ ] when he goes pro yeah and he's got four bets now so we're gonna it's good to see you there's a couple more promotions coming up so he might get a couple more bells he said he wants to be alexander or sullivan's we got to see like if there's a man who can do it it's probably guarding out of me yeah i think karma conway from here might be close to doing it very soon okay kelly that was close as well carl's the [ __ ] kyle's the dogs bollocks if you ask me that fella he just loves fighting now i mean i would love to see him uh like i'd love to see him and pray over a lot in this gym and [ __ ] make a little bang on the pro scene himself because a couple more fights i think he's there there the belt picks up a striking a little bit i think he's like he's at the wobbling a couple of his last opponents so you can see where the stroke is that they're coming along so it'd be great to see what he's going to do on the like the next like when we actually have a a lot of time to walk or don't know what i mean yeah that's [ __ ] he's a credit to the gym as well kyle he's [ __ ] great for rounds for me anyway know what i mean like he's probably as close to a niche and you're a pain or a rushing you're gonna get now what i mean that that [ __ ] will hold onto your leg like a [ __ ] jack russell with two flutes and he i mean he won't let you go oh no he is he is good obviously he he came up from charley and so did uh andrews but that's another conversation for another day as well i actually want to touch on because we barely touched on it you're pro obviously we talked about your amateur debut what it felt like how did the pro differ like was there more nerves or was it because you'd done it that walk so many times do you know what it like like i said in my head i was like i was already ready to go pro like like i remember people saying it to me when i had won the world championships and i was a bit like i remember saying radio and he was like no you're not there yet you know what i mean or like pete what and i was like yeah like light is like i was looking at some floyd weights and stuff and i was like we could [ __ ] i mean now we could beat them but then it's more like cage time you know what it means watch i'm missing i think that's i think that's the biggest thing between an amateur and a broker it's like yeah decision making and i got caged on the market and the better decision making is going to be the more comfortable they are in there where i felt at that like the foi mi las amacho oh yeah my decision-making wasn't perfect in it but i knew it like my decision-making wasn't perfect but i know i had a lot more to give than that for you where like uh it was like i let him smother me stoil i was falling into his game and then i knew getting ready for the pro jump the only thing that was different for me was like like in the gym we feel like whatever techniques you're doing you should be practicing inspired you know what i mean so we'd be always taking risks and we like give me fight simulators and things like that like trying techniques or was that their deal on that week or if we wanted to walk on like single legs or be like shooting in and attempting single legs and we fight simulators where now we do all that and we sparred and then we thought today and uh wednesday nights and then i leave all like well you stick to me game plan in the void simulator and i think that stood to me and that last for you where there was touch and move and cracking them and moving off and when he was connecting with me disengaged now i wouldn't like oh my amateur for each other also like i think i've two decision wins uh a tko and the rest of my subs like right now i can sub anybody on their mats know what i mean yeah like there's nobody he'll walk under that matano he won't catch like regardless of belt or whatever like there's like oil like i believe me ability that much but right now my striking is like it's levels above days and anybody will tell you that i've moved around with know what i mean um and it doesn't matter the way like or when the the shots we landed now we can pour anybody out so it's like sticking to me guns and fights and more sticking to the game plan i think was the biggest thing that like only made a difference in before you cam preparation and stuff like that but the walk and stuff we felt like it was already ready for and what i mean like they're the things you're building up into like these are your little milestones these are the things you're building yourself up for like coming up today's fight it's like like for me you'll be walking past the mirror and telling myself i'm the [ __ ] best that ever was and what i mean like like when i walked like when all you before you go train and it's like like i'm not telling yourself i'm going to go open four days because they'll be training partners but you better believe telling me yourself nobody's going to touch me up here or like that's what's going through me headed like if i'm on the mat and someone caught me last week but better believe your name's on the bill now what i mean not to go out and hoard them but just to make sure the next round they get with them we outclassed them and proved on that on me level know what i mean and that's just the way i think like that's the way my mindset is for that anyway and i think prepping for fights if we like the lads only moving around with here like the likes of like andreas and like like ryan cortez like he's at the gallon of the foyer now but like like we're now training with the likes of them like scott harvey like all the lads we've trained we're coming up throughout the years like hey like alex fagan at the moment karma conway all these lads like gary aldi's lads winning belts we know and going in and winning rounds against these lads and like these lads are coming in and taking rounds off me and we know if it's only the lads here or the the best of the best that taking rounds aren't me good know what i mean i know if someone like the only day someone who's like not as good as me takes around off me is if i'm wedded if i'm not late looking after me recovery and things yeah like there's like no doubt on my head i can be everybody any day on them i can take every round off them but i think it's just yum like that's the way a mindset has to be and i think if your purpose your prep is right your mindset is right nobody can beat you in there and if they do these they'll probably have to preparing as much as your water you didn't have enough heart no what i mean yeah no i really like your mindset and obviously how you're saying your instructions your flight simulations and then how you stick to the plan you won the cage conflict belt you're actually going to be defending that belt the 23rd of july do you want to talk a bit about that yeah i'm [ __ ] bosom now i mean i just can't wait to fight now like like i don't really care too much about fights gone boy you know what i mean people like people like to [ __ ] sit on the flights and like are playing another class when they're like [ __ ] that now what i mean on to the next one i'm just posing to get this like what are we three four weeks out now like it's i'm starting to get the buzzer belt where it's like the closer the foot gets the more excited you get about i know what i mean and the more fight simulators you're doing the more prepared you're feeling and start like getting into that stage of the camp now where like getting getting the 40 simulators in so starting to get prepared for it what you're sort of looking forward to and now now that opponent is good he's tricky on the floor we've like me and i wouldn't have looked at him he's tricky on the floor he has he has a little bit of stand up but we're gonna butcher this fella like it's whatever they're one gonna open this fellas that face up her elbows from everywhere like he's he's not gonna he's gonna be diving from my legs from as soon as he walks into that catch like there's whatever doubt is now it doesn't know that my point is not where he's nowhere near me like yeah he has a couple of points on his record but that's what we look at we look at who you're far he's fought nobody's know what i mean one-on-ones one and i was playing the only per like the only one laddie we we saying that he fought he was decent he blamed he took a blade groin gave up not i mean didn't even look like he wasn't hurt no i mean you could see her in him so i know when i pull big shots on this fella's chin he's gonna crumble and he's gonna wanna he's going to look for the force way out there whether it's me snatching his neck or it's me snapping his arm or it's me putting them shots on his chin he's this fella's going away whatever whatever way we can do it like on there to hold that belt now know what i mean like well hold on for well i'll hold on to that until i get to the ufc if i have to know what i mean yeah because it's [ __ ] it's it's fueled now what i mean it's like anybody who comes comes after that is like trying wood on the fire you know what i mean annoying the foyer so they're gonna get bored like when i've heard the [ __ ] i'm here to take them all and whoever wants i can have it yeah so obviously you want to finish because you said earlier you actually said that you you see a finish as an actual win and sometimes if it's a close decision so you want to go out there and make an absolute statement with this fella yeah yeah i think you should be making statement like the way like roddy's being partnered in like he puts her in everybody's head in the gym whether it's fuji g2 matches whether it's like we're not here to win on points where hit the [ __ ] flight to finish know what i mean you go out there and you [ __ ] look to finish the fight if you're not trying to deal with that you're not trying hard enough now i mean like you have to want that you have to want that finish like like i don't know what people want know what i mean we want to go out there as well go out there win fights and be known for the owner know what i mean look at what the people want money if you want the money go out finish people and make it look like you want to know what i mean and yeah i think if if if you want it enough you'll go out troy finish people going out and stalling wins and not looking for finishes it's not enough like you're not getting to the ufc they want that yeah you know what i mean like now kid grows up want to play football and doesn't think about going to the premier league you know what i mean yeah like they don't think about playing championship it's premier league you want to be in the champions league at that or the premier league now what i mean that's that's the way you think about it if you want to be a fighter you want to be one of the best in the world go to the ufc if you want to make a living yeah bellator home would be our option probably want to be known as one of the best ever to do and i don't want someone to say uh yeah you only made it this far though [ __ ] that give anybody excuse to say anything know what i mean yeah go out there finish your flights prove you're the best go out avoid the best in the world prove you can beat them yeah there's your legacy now what i mean yeah no i actually like that as well because there is better monetary options in different organizations but obviously the ufc is the cream of the crop yeah like there's there's one in bellator and like don't get me wrong i would love to fight on them cards know what i mean but that's not what it is it's the uh like the ufc is to go no i mean yeah like yeah that's that that's what that's like that's that's what we've built up in my head that's my goal anyway like i don't care what anybody else's goals are i don't i don't look down on anybody else's cards know what i mean that's just what all you want in my head anything else isn't enough for me personally no and i like that mindset that you're not distracted by the money you you're just you want to be the best fighter like for legacy like you said you want to be known as the most vicious don't get me wrong all that's going to come yeah else money the law now we know the way we speak and the way people want to come and see me [ __ ] spark people out and if they don't want to see that you want to see me get sparked but good luck to that because there's nobody putting me away anyway you know what i mean yeah so people are they're going to watch whether you love you i hate you yeah exactly mayweather mcgregor for example anyway um yeah um yeah so obviously we've gone through then what your ambition is obviously the ufc i want to ask you a little bit about owen roddy as a coach what does when i say own roddy what words come to mind what does he mean to you as a coach i asked like there's not enough forward to pull up like i've read his head for me like it's roddy's been me coach since he's 11 like since i since he's 11 2011. for a yeah now rudy's been my coach since i'm 11 and like he's always put he's always put time into me he's like he's like he's more than a coach for me he's family now what i mean he's like it's funny because he's like like he's one like he's like like he's like a fat or an uncle or a brother he's like all them because it's like your uncle will always be the one he'll like he'll probably go out and you'll be like i heard i'm at the door on this short i'm at the [ __ ] up here or maybe the one to say yeah knock around the head or know what i mean your brother's like the person you'll probably sit down and you can have a chat with and yeah like you can talk about the [ __ ] you talk about with nobody else and then yeah that obviously is the person like like like you look up ten you want to like you wanted a spoiler to be like as well and like little things like that like he's uh he's all them things and won't for me know what i mean and obviously he's my coach as well but it's like i don't know what a way to put it now what i mean he's just like he's the [ __ ] he's the dogs bollocks to me now what i mean i would would love to be even a tenth of the four years he was know what i mean like he's he's in here every day putting an extra walk in with me and only important to walk in with him and it's obviously it's like a bit like there's a friendship there and then like know what i mean it's i don't know what other ways to put it it's like because he's he's so much funny so yeah i i can't break it down into one tangled and like them like like because to me family's everything now to me and so like putting them on that level is putting them on as high as you see as you can be you know what i mean yeah no 100 um yeah he sounds from what i've obviously he's well renowned within the country and i've heard similar from other fighters like i know for me it's like there's not many people who have a better brain on that match to me now what i mean not so much after much but when i'm under my own like playing rayman out there i know what i mean like when i'm moving around i'm playing chess for people i'm [ __ ] 50 emails are ahead of every move you have not just your next move like any possibility like now whether it's you you're slipping your head to your left i have 15 answers for whether it's you shooting the takedown i have 15 answers for it like it doesn't and like we know how to bring that all the way back like all the way back to my game now what i mean like if we landed like a floyd land or i separate you're right back at the start of me if we go to the floor you better believe there's [ __ ] 30 submissions waiting like that like there's you're going to be finished and that's just the way like roddy like it's what like which i like a dog now what i mean that's the way it breaks you know what i mean that's like like we always like found i could always bounce off him because like his mo like his game like there's nobody you're getting plans like right you know what i mean but also not even just gay implants just just in techniques alone it's like we don't just like it's great having a good left body kick but it's like what's your 10 answers after your left body kick that's the way ruddy puts you know what i mean and like like you're just you're ready for any situation it's it's a game of chess know what i mean and that's the way we like to think about it let's not go in there and try hitting which i heard a shot cause like you see so many people they go in there and they they punch someone in the mountain they say oh [ __ ] this fucker's still coming at me yeah you know what i mean yeah well you do it again again if he finds an answer for it you better have 10 answers for it yeah i think that's the way he prepares us and he prepares us to finish fight so you can probably see that you'll see that throughout the kids now i mean that's the way like and he's like that for everybody in the gym he's there to put the walk in for you and like he gets you ready like that so if you go into a fight and you don't do all them things it's it's not it's not ruddy's fault it's your fault you can have all the talent in the world but if you don't have fight iq i think it's overlooked quite a lot in fighting as well yeah like there's a lot of lads out there who [ __ ] go out and fight with just [ __ ] heart and to get the job [ __ ] done like some people are just winners now but if you're a winner and you're able to [ __ ] poke game like put things together and not get lost in the moment and like read all the situations they want like plan for them like when you're in the fight it's like anybody who says to you the odd that thinking in the fight you go into that fight and the dark closes every bit of that is going to be muscle memory like we don't care who you are like the top of the top lads like you can see loads of different asp like look at charles de la verde you'll finish it undefeated finish it on the floor he'll stop your wrestling like he has so many options because he's been in that situation so many times now what i mean like that's almost a memory for him like that's what i reckon anyway yeah like when we went to fight like i'm not thinking that he's slipping his head out to the left here or he's dipping hair or he's setting up the takedown or maybe he's trying to jab and shooting that double like why are you not taking a reach trying that job and shooting that double i've already answered it you know what i mean we should have already answered it if like if we killed it with the sprawl or probably that was that was late for me the sprawl is the last answer in my head know what i mean there's so many there's so much more defense before now what i mean yeah and like i think after that once you find that like everybody's time it's different but once you appoint their tournament i don't like your your shot selection your game plan will put them away like nobody gets in there and thinks it's emotional memory is what gets you that is what gets you to win and your experience and your time and your ability to put your iq in the catch you know what i mean i think that's what you get from experience yeah especially with charge like he said like he'd lost so many times and then come back and like he said he's an answer for everything if he gets dropped he lies on the floor and basically says write them down yeah well it's like it doesn't even have to be fight you know that in it can be a fight simulator is in the gym it's train and smart and like having someone like roddy who's like like he watches over the spas and he's like if you if you make the wrong decision after the spirit he's walking on it with you know what i mean like you don't wait to make mistakes and fights no i mean that's too late yeah know what i mean you've already you've already been hurt then like that could be the difference of someone getting knocked they don't know what i mean like some people get knocked down that's that last fight yeah i mean the way the [ __ ] complaint scans are there and all over here it's you don't want to be taking major damage that's that's not what you're here for you're here to deal major damage but it's like in your feet simulators and stuff if if you're not shrimping or if you're not getting to that cage and getting the knee into the cage and getting back up to your feet if you're stalling on your elbow like that believe he's drilling that widget and fixing it so it doesn't happen in there i know what i mean yeah and that that that's what like that [ __ ] there's a foil building every time because like if you're not realizing it he he's telling you know what i mean yeah and if you're still not reasonable isn't it it's your own fault it's your fault it sounds like yes you're well prepared obviously you're going into this fight the 23rd slide to defend your belt um i'm going to let you go on a second we're going to ask you one question if i you wanted people to remember you by one word as a fighter for your legacy what would that one word be vicious that's it ready to go in there and [ __ ] kill anybody in front of me know what i mean like like that i said already not in there for medals [ __ ] that not in there for trophies i'm in there to prove them the best prepare from the most dangerous fella to ever do this and that's what i want before the show or at least be the most skillful fella to stand in there like i don't want i don't want to go in a ring and someone ever ever to say like he was outclassed we believe we can stand the ring with the best of the best and never be outclassed and that's what i want know what i mean perfect i really like that answer i'm going to ask you one thing before you go as well there is you i don't know how to start yet your kids class for or the summer camp do you want to speak a little bit about that yeah so so much i'm starting on the fourth uh fourth and like so next week fourth of july uh to the eighth so it's five days um starts from ten o'clock to one o'clock it's for experienced and uh experienced down beginners like i know there's a lot of kids in the gym already doing it there's a couple of uh kids not training so long going to be doing it well it's going to be walking off sequences like that getting getting people prepared to finish so going to be running through some drills a little bit of strike and they might block get a take down walk from the takedown then get the finish and getting them getting them prepared for looking for finishes and just get like getting the technique right and stuff like that and having fun and all but we want them like like a big thing for me like i want to see the kids and the teens in the gym like get prepared to get prepared for our competitions and stuff so hopefully it helps them along with like a lot of that like yeah perfect thank you so much thank you so much for your time it's been an absolute pleasure thank you
