Fansview MMA host Dave interviews flyweight champion Ricky De Araujo (Ricky) ahead of Your Fighting Championship fight week. Ricardo says Decky McAleenan texted him on Tuesday night that his bout with Brandon Shields was upgraded to a title fight; it will be his third title fight and he could win a second belt on Sunday night at a home show where Decky promotes and coaches him. He praises Your Fighting Championship matchmaking and credits Deck Kennedy and Decky McAleenan with helping him enter the scene. Ricardo views Brandon Shields as a capable but not his toughest opponent, and spends much of the interview unpacking his last outing at bantamweight against Ethan: he did not bulk up, walked around about 64 kg while Ethan was much heavier after weigh-ins, felt fine striking until takedowns exposed a strength gap, and said the loss left him hurt for at least two weeks though he returned to work quickly. He frames Sunday as a chance to finally show improvements from training at Team Torres under Decky and Seba alongside tough sparring partners including the Farrell brothers, Shay Cullen, Kieran Brady, Rory Lowry, and Oisín Daly. He also reflects on MMA changing his life after a path where he thought he would be a waster, and on now inspiring younger teammates.

Yeah. Okay, so I have the other half of the flyweight championship at Your Fighting Championship this weekend. I have Ricky I know Ricky quite well. He's champion in right. He's looking obviously he's going to looking to add another belt this weekend, but he has to get through Brandon Sheils first. How are you feeling Brandon obviously said last night that you only found out this weekend was going to be a title fight. How did you feel when Thank you for joining me by the way, but how did you feel when you were told like it's a title fight? Yeah, thanks for having me again there dear. But um Yeah, see when Decky text me on Tuesday night saying that it's for a title so I was I was a bit shocked cuz I didn't expect it, but I think it's kind of it's a bit better now it's for a title. It'll be my second title. Actually it'll be my third title fight, but I'll be getting this here on Sunday night. Yeah, it's I I love Your Fighting Championship when it started. Decky was Decky the two Deckys Deck Deck Kennedy from Cage Legacy and Deck Decky McAleenan really kind of helped me get into the scene so I love the show. I think it's probably the best match show in the country cuz he he does it from a fan perspective. He doesn't want to give people from Torres like easy fights. He wants you to find the best ones and I find that when I look at I'm like I didn't even think of this match up or that match up, but it goes really well. How does it feel to be fighting on a home show and potentially getting to win the belt on the home show? Well, I think it's class cuz obviously um I'm fighting under Decky's show. Obviously Decky's my coach so it's good to fight under that show and a home crowd so No, it's going to be good um obviously Decky's show is probably one of the best show at the minute and my it's one of the top show at the minute so I'm looking forward to it doing being the main event of it. Yeah, no I think it's like I I it's the the matching on it is really really good And I love it even whether I'm there or not. I haven't actually been to it in a while and I won't be at this one unfortunately. Hopefully I can make the next one. Um but you've got in front of you you've got Brandon. Brandon obviously hasn't had as much MMA experience as yet, but he's also been very active in other disciplines. What are you expecting from Brandon? And what what do you what How do you view him as an opponent? I wouldn't say I wouldn't say he'd be the toughest opponent I've had like I've had. You know yourself, Dave, I've fought two two two of the best fighters in the country. And then one of the fights I've had my last fight there. I I went up bantamweight and maybe I shouldn't have because I didn't bulk up. I didn't bulk up and then cut down from 61. I was kind of walking around 64 kg, so I wasn't The next day I wasn't even heavier or anything. I was still light. Where Ethan was He was probably near hitting 70 the next day and you could tell difference. It was It was just strong like, you know. Yeah, it's We seen Max McHaffey fight Morgan hindsight it was something similar. He went up to bantamweight. Yeah. Like you would think because it's at the lower weight that it wouldn't be huge amount of difference, but talk to us about Could you feel the strength difference though when he when when they hit heavier in some positions? Was it a lot harder to try and get out move them and do certain things because of the weight discrepancy? Oh definitely like um I was I was actually comfortable um striking with him until once he took me down that's when he like he knew fair rightly like oh I I have this by here. No bother like. So I think that's why he just kept taking me down. Like I was happy enough to strike with him, but then once he once he knew he was a lot stronger than me that he just held me and kept taking me down the whole fight and I was raging like I the FC to be honest like I see after a fight, I was in the worst mindset ever, like like it was I was in such a bad shape where I was just in a bad shape, like you don't understand. Um But then obviously like I was hurt for at least 2 weeks straight. And then I was all [ __ ] up. Just get back to work. Actually, I was actually back to work on that week. And then just kept working towards now, like so I'm just I'm going to prove on this Sunday here I'm going to prove that there's levels to this game and it's going to show, like. And if you don't mind me asking, what part about that loss more than anything else? Or was it the loss or was it other things? Obviously, if there is other things that maybe were personally combined in as well, I'm not trying to pry into that. But was it was it was it the loss that hurt you the most or was it a couple of other things involved? Like I said, you don't have to mention them. No. Uh no, it was that I know it was only the loss, like it wasn't anything else. It was just the loss where like sometimes when say when um you've worked that hard and then you just can't really show on that night. It It does It It does annoy you, like, do you know what I mean? Like coming out uh with a loss and all. All I All I want to is just to show how good I am and see the results that I haven't really showed anything yet and I feel like this Sunday here I'm going to show you, like, I'm going to show everyone my uh my real potential where how good I am and what I can really do, like. So, I'm just looking forward to it. Get over and done with it and then on to the next one here. Yeah, no, 100%. And like that, sometimes like cuz you've you've like you kind of really sprang onto the scene. You had a lot of fights. You were like that I said, "Who is this guy?" And all of a sudden it was all fights were exciting. And you were saying like obviously not getting to show what you've kind of improved on and stuff like that. That's probably what hurts the most, but talk to us about obviously you've got Decky and you've got Seba. I was talking to one or two fighters, I won't mention, but they said that the self-belief and the motivation and everything that that those guys put into you in that gym is like second to none. Talk to us about your experience in the gym with the guys and and your relationship with Decky, Seba, and Rory, and whoever else may coach you. Oh, it's class. It's what a team like what a team I have at the moment. It's class. Like even in sparring, like just even in any classes, Decky and Seba would just help you and they're there for you anytime and like see when I'm sparring, them boys give you such a hard like there's never an easy round when you're sparring over there. Like we we Matthew Farrell and we Dalton Farrell, the two bros. They're young like and they give me a tough time over there and then obviously you have Shay Cullen Kieran Brady and all them stuff. Rory Lowry, Oisín Daly, they're they're top top amateurs, like do you know what I mean? It's class to have them like around you. You just improve. Like that's the way I feel like training with them boys has helped me so much over the past few months like ever since I joined Team Torres. Um I've improved so so much where I just think I need to show it, like do you know? I still need to show what I've worked on and what I'm capable of doing. So, yeah. Yeah, so I can see now by what you're saying that how much you've improved and you haven't really got to show the improvements kind of since joining and that's kind of more what hurt you in the last one, but you're looking to rectify it now obviously going forward into the next fight. And like there's you can see it kind of kind of goes in peaks and valleys with it cuz when I started this four years ago, you had Rory Lowry, Oisín Fox, Aaron McDonald. And then there was a bit of a lull that and then all of a sudden you've got this newer generation where like obviously Shay was always there and Shay's come to promise now he's in pro. You've got yourself there. There's a couple of others like you said the two brothers and you can see like at the next generation coming through. What's it like being in the gym being that next generation coming through? Feels good like cuz obviously it's going to um inspire like the younger ones as well to be become the next generation after me and after the rest of them boys in the gym. So it's good to be the be the inspiration to from for them boys like you know. Just to help them a lot like. And this is a question I've got to ask you. Obviously I've seen some really you put up about the way you you were years ago and how MMA has changed your life and stuff. Did you ever think at a point in time that you would be an inspiration to someone to do something uh to do something good and go on and be a fighter and stuff. Like would that ever Did you ever think that someone would ever think that of you that you would inspire them? No like see to be honest like I always thought like I was going to be a waster like um obviously where the path where I was going but then obviously when I found MMA it was just all this is what I'm going to do and see to be honest it's it's mad to think like I've I've inspired so many people already and it's class like I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing and just keep doing. The sky's the limit like you know. Yeah I and you keep doing what you're doing cuz we're all enjoying watching it. Like I said I'm going to enjoy it. I'll be watching the show this weekend and I won't be there so I wish you the best of skill. I'm going to let's go. Is there anything you want to say or anyone you want to shout out before you go? Just want to shout to everyone in Team Torres just for helping me out through ever since I I joined Team Torres everyone's been there for me and my family just my family and my friends and thanks for the support and I'll see you all on Sunday. Perfect. Thank you so much for your time especially so late in the fight week. I really appreciate it and best of luck to you and I can't wait to see the fight. I think it's going to be an absolute banger, so I'll I'll see you then. Yeah, 100% bro. Thank you.
