Phuket Prospect is a one-guest sit-down with Sam Curry, a 21-year-old from Newcastle, England, who says he is 5-2 in seven amateur fights and plans to turn pro in the next year or so. He grew up wanting to be a professional footballer, then around 16 or 17 accepted that was unlikely and drifted into Newcastle's party culture — going out about twice a week from roughly 15 to 18, the Geordie Shore stereotype — until the first lockdown hit when he was 18. He and boxing mates then ran a field fight club with hard sparring until gyms reopened. He messaged SBG South Shields, about a 45-minute drive from home, took a free trial, and was invited that same day onto 6 a.m. fight-team sessions with pros and high-level amateurs. His dad drove him three mornings a week. Thrown in without much technique, he says toughness became his asset. His first amateur fight after about six to eight months was a learning loss: he came out swinging, the opponent wall-and-stalled, and Curry spent most of the fight with his back on the cage. He lost his first two of three amateurs and briefly doubted whether to continue, then decided he never wanted to lose again and says he has not lost since. His sixth MMA fight, against a game opponent who traded with him, was the first performance he was happy with and the night he decided this was his life. He first came to Thailand in November for six weeks, then decided to stay, turn pro in Asia, and chase ONE Championship Rising. Short-term he wants two or three more amateur fights in the next six months to a year. He credits Frank and George for leveling up his wrestling while keeping a stand-and-bang style.

I've had seven amateur fights I'm five and two and I've plan on turning pro in the next year or so growing up in new Castle Newcastle is not really known for being much of a fighting City it's more when I was a kid growing up my dream was to be a professional football player and most kids from England especially Newcastle as well that's their dreams as I got to about 16 17 I realized I'm probably not going to be a professional football player and I started to delve into fighting and around that age I was going out partying a lot I would I would probably party about two times a week every week it's it's known for its party culture if you've seen Jordy Shaw that's based in Newcastle and but then when the first lockdown hit when I was about I was 18 when the first lockdown hit that's when I decided to stop all that party and [ __ ] and start start with the fighting and I used to meet up with my mates who used to box and we used to train together in the field and [ __ ] before the gyms used to open up we used to do a fight club and we used to spar each other and the moment I found out the gyms were open around me I text the I messag the gym and they' done a free trial and that's how I that's how I started with the MMA and the coach said to me after my first session he was like do you want to do you want to do the fight team sessions I was like yeah yeah and I showed up the next day not much fighting experience hadn't really done much training then and I went straight into the deep end I was training with Pro Fighters high level amateurs and yeah I took some [ __ ] I took some beatings but a toughen meal and I think that's my greatest asset now is my toughness going forward uh yeah so basically when I was about 15 I would start me and my mates would go out in in Newcastle like the local town and that's kind of the there's not much else to do where I'm from in Newcastle the weather [ __ ] it's like the only thing really to do when you're a young when you're a young lad is [ __ ] go out and get [ __ ] on a weekend so we'd go out like maybe twice a week after school and we'll know like we'd go to school during the week and then the weekends we'd go out maybe twice a week and I've done that from the age of like 15 to 18 and it wasn't until the first lockdown hit where I was like [ __ ] this I don't want to keep doing this for the rest of my life and that's when I decided to get into fighting and so it was quite I'm quite happy like the lockdown happened cuz it give me it give me a bit of reflection I remember I was walking through the park with my mate one day and we were like [ __ ] this like we've been doing it for like years and it was just yeah it was getting too much so in the lockdown cuz there wasn't much to do I would and I was wanting to get in the Fighting by this point I would message my mat who I used to do a bit of boxing with I used to do a bit of boxing when I was like 15 nothing serious I would train like a few times a week and a few of my friends who used to box I message them cuz they live not far from me and we would meet up a few times a week just in the [ __ ] in the local field and we would do pads Spa would Spar quite hard in the field and stuff so I didn't really learn much about fighting I hadn't been to a proper fight gym but it got me fit and tough ready to like ready for when the Gym's open to start properly training I messaged it was SBG South Shields was the first gym I messaged and which still wasn't close to where I lived where I lived it was probably about 45 minute drive from my house so but that was the closest gym with like a good reputation to where to where I was so I messaged their Instagram in the lockdown and the coach messaged back and he was like yeah we've got a free free free trial on this dat and so I went for then and I loved it the minute I walked in I was like [ __ ] yeah this is real because I'd seen videos of like of like fight gyms and stuff in the past but like when I got to the gym and I seen the cage and I seen the mats and stuff I was like yeah this is for me and so I'd done that first session and at the end of the session the coach asked if I wanted to fight and I was like yeah and he invited me to the fight team sessions and they were at 6:00 in the morning three times a week so it was Monday Wednesday Friday and it was for high level amateurs and pro Fighters so I got invited to there and I would get up at about 10 to 5: so 4:50 a.m. three times a week to go train 45 minutes away so [ __ ] luckily my dad helped me out a lot he was a big help without him I wouldn't have been able to make it to the gym back then cuz I didn't drive or anything like that so he used to take me to the gym three times a week and basically I would go [ __ ] Spar and train with like killers at 6:00 a.m. so I went from I went from going out partying twice a week every week when I was about 16 17 and then when I turned 18 I was straight into the deep end H training at a top gym and learning the trade the struggles were well to start with I had no so normally when someone first gets into MMA they might they might do some lighter classes to start with basically the where they're just learning skills and technique and stuff but with me because the first sessions I was doing were fight team sessions and people were preparing for fights I was basically like thrown straight into the deep end and the struggles were because I didn't know much technique I was forced to just basically fight people and which was good it toughened me up and yeah the the struggles were not known much technique so I had to compensate with that with just heart basically and fighting that was the struggles yeah so my first amateur fight at had been trained about 6 to 8 months by this point and I picked it up fast cuz I was training with some high level people my coach was was coaching me well I was I was ready for the fight um and how the fight went it was the the guy I thought he was kind of he was kind of H he was he was stalling a lot we call it wall and stall he was uh shooting takedowns and he couldn't get me down but we were just against the cage and because of my lack lack of experience I'd only been training about eight months like I didn't have the technique there to like get him off the cage and get him back into striking range and take him out basically I was I spent most of the fight with my back against the cage so it was a big it's a big Learning lesson but I went back to the drawing board not long after that and like leveled up my game a lot and but yeah it was a good experience my first amateur fight and yeah so in the first fight I I was gameing basically I I came out from the bell and I was just trying to knock him out in the first like minute or so and he shot for the leg straight away and basically I spent most of the fight with my back against the cage I would put it down to a lack of experience and by that point I hadn't hadn't been training too long and I didn't know enough to maybe turn him off the cage and get back to striking range but it was it was a good experience for sure and it it it done me well going forward in the future having losses cuz i' I've lost twice in my amateur career now and in my first three fights I lost my first two fights so after that after I lost my second going into my third fight which was my second loss I was kind of of the mindset of like I might not do I might not do this going forward I wasn't sure if I want to do this as a career or not and then after that loss coming back I was like [ __ ] this I never want to lose again I want to win every fight going forward and I haven't lost since then so I'm going to keep moving on I knew I was good everyone like my coaches my training I would do good in the gym and like all that and I would do good in fights but the first performance I was actually happy with was my six FEMA May fight and that was against a game opponent and the way I like to fight I like I would like to say I'm a I'm a what's the word I've got a I've got a crowd pleasing style H I like I like to throw hands and [ __ ] and get stuck in and my La my sixth MMA fight the opponent was game and he came out from the bell and we were both trying to take each other's heads off and it wasn't until after that fight that that I was that was the happiest I've ever been after a fight because it felt like I'd actually been in a real fight I wasn't some some Fighters you fight and they're still tough don't get me wrong but they'll kind of run away a bit or stall a bit whereas that fight was it was it was a good fight and I was buing with it after that was the first fight where I was like yeah [ __ ] this I want to do this for the rest of my life I come to Thailand to basically level up my game learn new skills and stuff I feel like I've got them I've got the mentality to go all the way to the top but I just need to need to level up my game learn new skills off some of the best coaches in the world so that was my initial reason to come to Thailand so I come in November for the first time and that was for 6 weeks and then when I went home in November I was like [ __ ] this I want to move here so the plan going forward is to stay here and turn professional out here and [ __ ] take over the fight scene in Asia fighting out here was one of the best experien I've had fighting because just where I was fighting I was fighting at where I was fighting was next to the beach it was next to a [ __ ] pool and stuff in a cool gym and I fought in a lot worse places I fought in like Social Clubs as you'd call them back in like England and like just [ __ ] venues and [ __ ] fighting out yeah it was sick it was like fight in Paradise so for sure it was it was a good experience and I hope to have a few more amateur fights out here and then turn pro yeah I just I just rocked up and you meet a lot of people who are doing the same [ __ ] as well there's a lot of people who come here on their own to train and stuff so I met people instantly and yeah it's it's [ __ ] Paradise to be honest like there's nowhere in the world I'd rather I'd rather be it's uh it's perfect for for what my goals are and yeah it's a it's a sick place it was it was mad just rocking up on my own I was a bit like I wasn't knowing what to expect I was a bit like [ __ ] what's it going to be like but all the coaches welcomed me in like perfectly it was from it took me about a week to settle in and then I was like yeah [ __ ] I don't want to leave yeah for sure especially the wrestling you don't Frank and George like the wrestling you get yeah well everything you get yeah but especially the wrestling compared to back home back home in England I mean I think people underestimate the wrestling that you get in England you still get good quality but coming out here and training with the likes of Frank and George my wrestling gamees leveled up [ __ ] massively uh my fight style though I'm still I'm still I like to stand and bang That's My Style and I think that'll do me well going in the future that's what people want to see h i fight myself I'm in the game and even when I watch people and it's it's a Bor and fighting they're on the and not much is happening and there's a lot of stall and I'm like [ __ ] that I don't want to watch it but you've got to look through you you're getting paid off people who who don't really know much about the sport they just think it's two people in there thr and hand so that's what that's what people want to see they want to see people going at it trying to knock each other out and that's my style so for sure I [ __ ] but to have the wrestling in my back pocket it's perfect my short-term goals are to finish off my amateur career maybe have two three more fights in the next 6 months to a year and and then turn pro and take over the pro scene out in Asia get signed to a good promotion one Championship rising and then work my way up through the ranks make a name for myself but for sure I know I'm going to blow up in the next few years yeah yeah thanks for everyone who's got me to this point so far I'm in Thailand I'm [ __ ] I'm making [ __ ] happen so thanks to everyone who's helped me from the start my family my parents who [ __ ] used to take me to the gym at 6:00 in the morning when [ __ ] I had no other way of getting there all my all my mates all my all all the people who' have watched my fights back home uh everyone who's everyone who's followed the journey so far because I'm nowhere yet but I will blow up in the next few years so I appreciate the support from [Music] [Music] everyone
