Fansview MMA interviews Jamie McAleese on 2024-11-21 in fight week before his second professional bout, the co-main event at Chaos Fighting Championships this weekend against Damen McKenna. McAleese says he feels fresh after camp, keeps training technical without hard sessions, and is much more comfortable above flyweight—calling the difference night and day compared with his draining last flyweight cut, when he struggled to shed the final pound and sat in the bath for hours. He plans to stay at his current weight for a while but may drop back to flyweight later. He has not studied McKenna closely, arguing fighters change fight to fight and that he trains for himself rather than tailoring to opponents. McAleese reflects on how Irish MMA training and talent have evolved since he started, when there was little online instruction and gym experimentation was the norm. He praises Chaos as the best-run local promotion under Jason, wishes shows were spaced so fighters could take four to six bouts a year, and notes he was less active in 2024 because of hand surgery but hopes to fight as often as possible next year.

[Music] okay so I'm here with Jamie mes who's going to be competing at chaos fight in championship this weekend against Damen McKenna um he's going to welcome into the pro scene Jamie's already had one pro fight um how are you feeling it's fight week it's uh it's it's very close to the date um how are you how's the wake up how I feel fresh really right just all the trainers done there it's ch we I call it and so you go from in the camp you go training for like two three months and then it comes to this week do you find it hard to switch off or do you enjoy this week to switch off and kind of focus on other things I'll still go to the G stuff and drill and get on but I'll not be doing any hard training next just all that should be done weeks ago yeah no 100% then i' be going there going through the motions and stuff today yeah just kind of more technical kind of stuff is it rather than to SP and just keeping yourself sharp um obviously you're going to be fighting a better weight for this one we've seen you fight previously a flyweight um do you feel more comfortable obviously with the weight cut I'm assuming there's not going to be a huge weight cut because of the the jumping weight classes how are you feeling at that weight you feel stronger you look I feel good bigger feel more natural at this we so do I don't hate worry about too much cotton or nothing anymore it's more or less we walk about with it and how have you felt in training with it have you felt stronger have you felt more more energetic then when you have to like usually at this stage I'd say you're dra water loading and draining yourself like so this must be a nice surprise or oh it's like night and day between the two weight classes I I can only imagine and is this where you're going to look to stay at this weight class you're going to see white goes I'll flp about here for a while see how at all I D it'll be going back down there again and was the cut draining to go down to to flyweight I that last cut of mine was that was horrible the last we bit there there's always that last pound that you can't shift and when that happens do you panic a little bit when you can't shift the last pound or two and and what's the feeling like going through that that's not really Panic it's more ah [ __ ] s this bath for an hour three hours yeah no it doesn't sound appealing to me now uh to be honest but um obviously you're feeling fresh you're going into this fight you're going to be fighting Daman you're gonna be fighting him on chaos um have you looked much into him or you use your does your coach do most of that or or what way does that work not really just I've seen him about the the circuit you know haven't really looked down to him too much but it doesn't really matter you know because everybody's different from fight to fight it's not like used to be you know it's he could be a completely different animal this time it doesn't matter yeah know do do find people especially like you say because you've been around a long time and with the training and everything that we have now is it's evolved so much that that fighters from fight to fight you see massive improvements even in yourself and and other people from fight to the training that we have now is like 100 times better from what I have when I started that's leaps and the head of what we ever could have done back there so everybody's different fight to fight now it doesn't there's no real you couldn't say oh that Bo a stand up play because you could work in as wrestling for [ __ ] six months and be high level doesn't matter anymore what was the training like like you said because I talked to Fighters that would have been around a long time ago they said they used to have to go on the internet try and look at moves and stuff like was the training quite basic years ago and and now it's just more you seen something and you played with it in the gym until he figured St out and there was even when I started there was there wasn't really that many boys on YouTube doing it or anything you just had to mess about in the gym see what works and what doesn't I'd say that made you very creative though in in trying to make things but you see some mad moves back there that you never see now because technically they might not have been very good or just probably they worked in but there's no way they' work now especially with the the rise of Brazilian jiu-jitsu is is quite big right now and it's the like there's an answer for everything what you make of the seed right now um with the amount of talent that we have and the amount of shs I think it's great I think the amateur Fighters now outdo the pro Fighters back there and St um skill but that's MMA now is completely different it's great it's good to see it that way did you think you'd ever see it evolve as quickly as it kind of has to the way it is now I knew it would but I don't think it' be this fast you know it's next year it'll be maybe 10 times better than as now always keep tring yeah it goes it has evolved quite quickly but also going to your fight obviously this weekend um how does it feel to to to be fighting on chaos the longest active running promotion I have to remember that because someone told me that that's the way it is active running promotion in the Millennium form I believe it's sold out from talking to Andy and Jason I believe it's just about sold out uh venue how does it feel to fight on a show like KS who's had James Galler Conor McGregor Patty Hulan and and people like that on it I love chaos chaos is real real well run by Jason that's I my opinion it's the best show company I'd say I love chaos I love the two guys and I think it's run well I think it's it's really far away and I think that's what for me I look go to all the shows right but I think yeah I don't think it gets the coverage it deserves um that's why I try to do each show evenly but it is a fantastic show and you're going to be coating event obviously how does it feel to to be up there and fighting Pro on there and um yeah just fighting Pro on chaos and being the co-main event oh just's nor de the office to me now at this point it doesn't really matter I could be the first fight or the last fight it doesn't really matter fate to fate I say you probably prefer to be the first would you so you can get home early and um but yeah no it's going to be a fantastic night and we're not looking past your opponent OB because he's the the next team in front of you but do you have a a plan for next year how how many times you'd like to fight or and with the amount of shows you have you've got such a a variety of choice how does it feel and do you have a plan of how many fights or you just focused on the task and hand I wasn't as active as I wanted it to be this year because i' was going for hand surgery but uh hands are holding up good now so hopefully next year I get to be a bit more active I'll take as many fights as I can to be fair but we see what we can get yeah what do you think of the amount of shows we even have because we had a new show last week in Belfast uh cage gladiators yeah got conflict Clan Wars we've got so many shows how does it feel to have that many options as a fighter that's great they have that many options but it' be better if they could space them out a bit then you could get on to maybe four or five of them a year but there's some shows that are on the same day and they're trying to compete with each other but that's all the same people that go to all the shows there's no point yeah know I completely agree with you like there was the two on the one day then a week later or two weeks later then a week later then there's another two or three shows and then during the summer there was only three I think over the space of three months yeah and like whatever about competing with each other it's about the fighters the shows are there for the fighters and it's hard if you get a pull out it's hard to get matched everyone's matched up hopefully next year they space them out bit and then you will be able to be as active as as you want to be um hopefully hopefully we'll see but do you have a number of fight in mind or is it just you take comes I'd F six times a year if I could I could get it see yeah no hope hopefully you can get as many as you want um what's the buzz like in the gym what's like what's your kind of anticipation for this weekend how you feel like obviously you said you like this week is the chill week um but like did do you still get nerves you chill you seem pretty chill as as we're talking what kind of emotions do you have coming up to the fight and fight week that's not really I used to get really like think about it all the time but there's no point doing that anymore it's just he's only a man and it's only a fate there's not much that can really go wrong you know you're not going to get really badly hurt so yeah take as it comes and not going in there to [ __ ] about either it's going to be a fight either way but we'll see yeah no 100% And and when you go into a fight do you go in with a game plan or like obviously you go in with with a game plan but do you like to think more on the fight as things happen and use your fight IQ to kind of dictate the fight I just take the fight as it comes there's no point going in there at a game plan because you you can only focus on yourself doesn't really matter what he does at all yeah and if game plans can go out the W as soon as you get kicked in the head or yeah no I actually seen a fight like that your man went in and within eight seconds I think he got kicked in the head and and that was it I think if you go in with a plan and they don't do what you think they're going to do I think it could potentially not that it freeze you but it might throw you off and I think you are right you best just to to focus on yourself rather than worrying about what they're going to do and like you said you didn't look too much into him because it doesn't matter like focusing on yourself is a main thing do you think people get too caught up in focusing on their opponent rather than improving themselves yeah people train to fight their opponent I train and just to fight whoever is there I my game doesn't matter about their game their game their business exactly like do you think if someone was always training to fight someone else you're never going to really create your own style are you H you can't morph to fight every person you can't like change your game just for one guy it's just there's no point in that because you'll never be any good at anything there yeah you're always chasing kind of D other people rather than establishing your own style and you'll never really progress and and be like and get good at your own game but no it's a fantastic show it's going to be a fantastic fight um I'm I'm interested to see how you like you said you're feeling good how the the new weight class goes and and if you'll stay there after as well I'm going to let you go is there anything you want to say before you go and thank you so much man thanks for having me on no it's a pleasure is there anything you want to say before you go because I know it's F weeks that's what why I appreciate your time is there anything you want to say
