Fansview MMA speaks with amateur fighter Jede Paulo, younger brother of Jess Paulo, about his rapid start in Irish MMA. Paulo recounts beginning BJJ in 2021, training for MMA from around 2020–2022, and making his debut in June 2023. He lost his first bout by first-round submission to Nathan Chambers, then rebounded with two wins—including a UK trip for UKFC and a third fight victory over the more experienced Kevin Coo after original opponent Josh Allen pulled out injured. He trains at Team Sand alongside Darren, Shay, Arman, and his brother, crediting the team for his development and saying he adapts between striking and grappling depending on the opponent. Paulo plans an active 2024 with at least six fights, starting in February, while managing weight cuts of up to about eight kilos from a 76–77 kg walk-around weight. He reviews both wins and losses constantly, accepts any opponent his coach offers, is not chasing belts yet, and is focused on the strong Irish regional scene rather than IMMAF for now, though he remains open-minded about turning pro when the timing feels right.

Kind: captions Language: en [Music] hello I'm here with Jed Paulo you will obviously know he looks like someone quite familiar um he's younger brother of Jess um he had Tre amateur fights last year H he fights for team sand he's a two and one so we're just going to talk to him about his star in MMA and his plans for the next year so thank you very much for joining me how are you all good all good how are you good good uh how long ago did you start MMA and why did you start MMA how long ago did I I had my first MMA fight 2023 June and I've been training for MMA kind of since yeah I'd say around 2020 2022 summer is when I kind of started but other than that I've done a v Jiu-Jitsu in 2021 and that's pretty much it pretty much it yeah so so you're not long in the game and like like your brother as well he's not long in the game and just the skill level that you both have um you had a good year last year you went 21 unfortunately you lost your your first fight I remember watching that live how was it to lose the first amateur fight like that but then bounce back with the two wins I mean after the fight I obviously annoyed that I lost first round submission all that in a high level Grappler what's his name um Nathan Chambers and yeah just looking back at it kind of just made me grow in every aspect like it didn't do anything to bring me down or anything I just watched the fight over and over and over see why I went wrong see where I could have see what I could have done to prevent the situation and yeah just leveled up ever since then yeah and one of the things you've shown H that I've noticed is you're striking your strike your head kicks especially when you fought a ukfc like you head kicked that guy all night basically um do you just love love the Striking aspect of the game because you seem to uh it's weird because I started with the Jiu-Jitsu so when I first got into sand and we'd have MMA classes I'd just be trying to solely someone try strike me i' do stupid stuff I pull guard and all that and now look at me here I am loing the Striking and all that but in my opinion it's MMA like it doesn't really bother me whether it goes to the ground whether it's staying up but just kind of depends on the style of the other person so I L just and adapt my style as to who I'm fighting yeah no and you've looked very impressive so far talk to us about being in sand the like s Shay your your brother obviously Arman and then Dar at the H what's it like what's the atmosphere like obviously Arman has gone it done oon J is one of the best am if not the best amateur in the country what's it like being around all them yeah I wouldn't ask for anyone different around me to be honest they've all we've all helped each other grow in some some certain aspect of our game and yeah I'm thankful for them around me thankful for the team I have around me Darren has a good bit of knowledge in him so it's like I'm a wet sponge every single session I'm just trying to soak up all that knowledge in it's all I can do yeah and when when you first started did you plan on competing yeah yeah I got into this so I could compete I knew when I first started training even before all the serious stuff all I'd be telling myself yeah I see myself here in a certain amount of time and yeah now look what here I am 2024 about to fight again very very soon and going try and stay active as much as I can yeah and like that you've been quite active for the the first three fights and with the amount of shows what you make about the amount of shows we have because they're all re running really really well running really really often what's it like for you to know you've that many options out there and especially because you got brought to the UK that must have been that must been really good for your second am to fight yeah very good opportunities out there that's the one thing about the MMA game there's opportunities left right and Center even if you think there you lose a fight you think there's nothing there for you another door opening for you just like that so yeah I fights H shows being on month after month I wish I could go on all of them but just have to do what I have to do yeah because obviously you can't fight every week you'll get burnt out but like like that there is a lot of options going to the UK though for your second fight was that kind of cool considering it was only your second amateur fight and being brought over yeah yeah it was a very good experience it was a really really good experience and I'd love to live over again I would have went in December I think it was early December that they had another show on would have went but just with work and all that too hectic so I couldn't have went so decided to do the i instead yeah and I is a a fantastic show and in that you beat Kevin coo who I believe that was his eighth fight maybe and that was your third fight like how did you feel fighting someone with that much experience because Kevin is very good he he was very good against tyan Lan uh who's obviously the Champa cage conflict what was it like fighting someone that much more experienced but being on the same level and better than them because you obviously beat him that night yeah uh to be honest when it comes to names and all that I don't never ever ever bothers me my coach literally just say you're fighting guy and I say all right like I never said no to any names that they given my way so I think I was fighting Josh Allen from Samson first and he had to pull out injured so my coach literally text me I think it was just a week before text me saying uh your opponent's out injured Kevin's your new opponent I just said all right like it didn't doesn't FAS me at all like training for whoever MMA training for the Striking training for the wrestling it doesn't matter who you are so yeah all I'm trying to do when me say no to anybody what am I really doing I'm not really fulfilling my full potential I'm not unlocking that character that I could potentially be yeah you're just just by fighting everyone because you want to experience every type of fighter as well and if that's why if you if you fight everyone that's put in front of you then you've been in every position you felt every punch s s of way more experience for you going forward um going forward this year like I said you want to be a bit active uh active again as you were last year is there a number of fights you'd like to get or you just going to take them as they come uh I'd like to have at least six fights this year wow so first fight in February and hopefully I could be on either every second month or even if I could playl in months just depends on how my body is feeling how everything is in between fights because life is hectic like I have a busy busy life so yeah have to work around that work around that yeah and for for your weight your weight cuts um cuz I remember when Jess first started he fought at lightweight which is crazy to think where he is now um what's your way cut like do you have much of a way cut um how do you find the we Cuts because I believe you're quite good you cooking obviously um yeah cook back I'm able to cut the weight but I do I think I caugh at least eight kilos Max I think for this last fight it was 8 and a half or something walk around at like 76 77 once again close to let's say three let's just say a month out a month out of the fight I'd want to be at least 73 or 72 kilos but it's not it's not too hard it's difficult on the week but it's not too hard no yeah if you bring it down gradually and then you I watched someone CAU I think it was six and a half or S kg overnight in a sauna like yeah no you don't want to be doing that now no it it didn't look appealing to me to be honest but um other different people have different ways so um with uh the two wins that you've had now going forward do you feel even from the loss obviously you said you watched over and over again to see where you went wrong do you look at your wins as well and trying to improve on stuff like because a lot Fighters will only look at their losses sometimes but some of them have said to me now that they look at their wins as well to say I could have done this here I could have done that here rather than thinking it was always the perfect performance I look at everything I still do be looking at my kickboxing fights from 20 20 from 2022 to be seeing what I done wrong because that's what it's all about it's all about seeing your mistakes and then working on that and then even the next fight my last fight against Kevin seeing the mistakes where I went WR looking at that looking at that I'm still looking at like before we spoke at least an hour or two I was watching little clips and all that it's just to keep on soaking up that knowledge see where I could go better see what I done wrong yeah so all the time I'm always always looking over and with that like you saying you want six fights like if you rack up one or two more wins would you be looking to fight for belts or are belts like not relevant to you you just want to fight the best people yeah belt is good to have an Arsenal yeah but I also want to fight the best people so if I keep on fighting the best people the belt is going to come down along the way so I'm not hunting for it at the moment I'm kind of just enjoying the journey but yeah one way or another is going to come to that point very soon yeah and like you said you're enjoying the journey you have all these you have all these goals in mind is there like the IMF is that something that interest you is that something that you'd ever like to do or do you want to just stay fighting on the regional scene I don't know I feel like there's a good level on the regional scene as well like I'm open to everything I'm open to everything hasn't crossed my mind yet but at the moment there's a good good level on the regional scene so I want to get that level up get that level up and then maybe we look at the time yeah yeah I know and uh the level is quite High here at moment when you see the likes of um your brother who's probably going to go pro very soon H there would have been a couple of amateur that you probably would have been watching fighting your brother going pro or around that time how excited are you for the sport in Ireland going forward with the amount of talent kind of coming through especially the early Pros now there's a lot of excitement out there it's amazing it's amazing like there's some amateurs out there that you'd be seeing and you feel like they beat a few Lads in Pro that's just the level that Irish MMA is at right now it's absolutely crazy crazy yeah it changed like I only started watching about two years ago like really like the way I do now and I didn't realize how much talent there was here and it's actually crazy ex like it's very exciting to see what's going to be coming down the next year or two years um would you have a number for Pro or like you said earlier you just going to enjoy the journey and when Darren feels is right and when you feel is right It's Time to Go Pro yeah I'm just going to enjoy the journey like I'm still just started like say if everything goes my way two years into the game I could potentially go pro but yeah I'm not really I'm not forcing anything I'm just letting everything just flow and then yeah when it comes to that time time yeah no I think like that I think um Darren obviously is the best hands you can be in and with the guys around you so when you feel you're ready you're ready but I just want to say the past three that I've seen you in uh the last two obvious you were quite exciting you're quite an exciting fighter and I can't wait to see more of you this year but I'm going to let you go is there anything you want to say or anyone you want to thank before you go thank my team thank my family everyone that's been patient with me helping me on the level UPS helping bettering me as a person everyone knows he so I don't need to say no one else but yeah stay active for this year keep on getting the fights up keep on getting the experience you'll see my name up there very soon perfect perfect I want to thank you so much for your time this evening because I know you're busy and I will talk to you very soon and hopefully see you soon a show very soon thank you Dave I'll see you soon perfect thank you
