Combat Confidential interviews Luke Johnson immediately after his win at Grapple Kings 11. Johnson says he entered with a triangle-heavy game plan—back triangles, rubber guard, and high guard probes—and felt the match suited him once he saw his opponent bail from the first triangle rather than fight through the middle. He describes locking a triangle the wrong way initially, pulling the arm out, and catching the finish when his opponent tried to escape. He credits daily hard rounds at Benevolent Next Generation BJJ alongside MMA fighters and regular sparring with top European-level partners for making competition feel like another training day. His immediate focus is ADCC trials in Croatia the following month: heavy training, as many matches as possible, and rounding out his game with unorthodox partners such as Danny. He plans to travel with two or three friends from different gyms, stay in Croatia before and after, and keep a light-hearted mindset. He walks out to Taylor Swift because he performs best when he is having fun. Johnson also reflects on combat sports giving him purpose, close friendships—including Jack, a former Grapple Fest opponent—and argues that martial arts can be a hobby, fitness path, or competitive outlet for anyone.

[Music] okay uh luk sir congratulations thank you so much a a wonderful victory for you um so did you have a plan going into this always triangles always triangles always triangles back triangles rubber guard triangles for like a n key dude I'm super dextrous and super flexible I knew he was going to be a strong dude I knew he was going to pass low so so it plays right into my game really that's awesome um so like was there a point where you're kind of like maybe triangles not going to work no no no as soon as as soon as um I set up the first one and he bailed out rather than trying to get a knee up through the middle yeah I knew that all I had to do was create a shoulder clamp um so I lock I lock the triangle the wrong way to start like I set the triangle the wrong way to stop and pulling the arm out and then I was able to switch as he tried to pull out so I probed him a couple of times like trying to work High guard and he like ripped out so I thought I'm going to have to wedge him a little bit here and as he tried to rip out I managed to catch the triangle on the arm excellent yeah uh there's kind of been a running theme I think with a lot of the victors here tonight it's uh I say effortlessness and I mean that in you guys make it look effortless like you like and I think it's just a testament to you know you guys your guys' skill and knowing exactly what you're doing because it looks so easy yeah well I mean I train at like one of the best gyms in the world at Next Generation we train with a lot of MMA fighters they tend to stick to a very similar blueprint um and I'm just lucky I train I have my hardest rounds in the gym every day um I'm used to fighting some of the best guys in Europe on a daily basis so coming to a comp it's just another day for me did you do anything special to PR prepare for the moment I'm just I'm prepping for ADCC tries in Croatia next month okay so I'm just hammering the training hard getting as many matches as I can nothing in particular I'm just like trying to round my game out more and more every week so certainly a boost of confidence for that after tonight massive yeah yeah um so adcs in Croatia what uh I I I don't know exactly how the ADC adccs work do you does that tournament tournament trials do you know who you might be competing against no um you get told like three days before the brackets last year was probably was capped at 150 okay um so it's just you can face [ __ ] anybody you got to be prepared for everyone and that's why just try to round out my game week on week train with guys like Danny who's got a really really unorthodox style good on top good on bottom you just have to round out you have to be good everywhere now you can't be onedimensional excellent um okay so your walkout song T Swift yeah yeah man does it have like a significance to you or just I love it no like uh man we're rolling around on the floor I love this [ __ ] like I don't I'm not a get pumped up and angry kind of dude and perform best when I'm having fun it and I have fun with it man like I see too many people walk out it's like 50 Cent Many man like bro no one's wishing de upon you about to roll around roll around the floor and cuddle for a little bit there just have some [ __ ] fun with it you know what I mean yeah it's awesome I think it's a kind of a great mentality to have yeah man when you travel to Croatia uh like team wise are you are you going with the large team or is it just yourself I'll go with two or three other guys like from various different gyms where you know like I'm a big proponent across training me and Danny are from what you would say is rival gyms but we're good pals um I train with people from gyms all over the country um and it's just better to have a strong team to go with you people to warm up and also people to help you through the day you know like competing stressful as much as I like to have fun with it and it was [ __ ] excellent to spend a weekend with Danny and Al here um just have some fun with it come in in a light-hearted mood and feel like I'm ready to perform my best so that's what I plan on doing at trials as well take two or three guys with us we'll stay in cre for a couple days before a couple days after prep before party after have some fun with it hopefully celebrate a big win absolutely I hope so how has comat Sports kind of improved your life how's it how's it made your life man I'm on a different path to most of the people I meet like all my friends uh 95s Jobs wife kids house I'll be honest bro that [ __ ] don't interest me like Combat Sports is for me the the challenge every day the camaraderie it's without without Jiu-Jitsu Combat Sports I don't know where I'd be now it's definitely changed my life for the better it's made some of the best friends I've ever had for example Jack here walking past me and Jack competed against each other on grapple Fest and now we speak on a regular basis with you know like everyone to compete against become friends with change my life dramatically for the better excellent so what okay so people who maybe aren't involved in Combat Sports um you know outside looking in if you have to kind of tell them one thing get one point across them about Combat Sports what would that what would you want that to be I would say you can use Combat Sports whatever you want to use it for just cuz you practice Combat Sports you don't need to be a fighter you don't need to be an athlete yeah it's like anything in the world you can use it for what you want to use it for if you want to be a hobbyist and just enjoy enjoy it and enjoy the camarad you can use it for that if you want to get fit you can use it for that if you are a natural competitor like myself you can use it for that it's
