Summary

Amy Scully has won the world championship before and is looking to take home gold again

AI summary AI-generated from the transcript

Fansview MMA interviews Amy Scully from Uzbekistan ahead of the IMMAF World Championships, where she is representing Team Ireland and aiming to regain the title she won the previous year. Scully says conditions are better than expected, she has settled in with roughly seven teammates from SG HQ, and she and Lisa are the only women on the squad this time. She stresses that although it is the same competition, none of her opponents from last year are back, so past success does not automatically carry over. She values worlds because gold requires at least three fights—bouts she would not get at atomweight in Ireland, where she and Lisa struggle for matchmaking. Scully describes her career shift from unhappy jiu-jitsu to living her MMA dream, including a visit to a UFC Gym, and credits social media with raising her profile and helping her attract promoters when she was not getting booked. Her immediate plan is an EFC strawweight fight in Cork in about three weeks, then moving up to strawweight permanently after Christmas for more opportunities before eventually turning pro; she notes ONE Championship atomweight is 52 kilos, below her regular walking weight. She thanks supporters and sponsors and mentions new belts being awarded at this year's worlds.

[Music] okay so I'm here with the champ looking to regain the champ status again um Amy Scully a fantastic fighter she she's fought a lot on the IMs and worlds European stuff like that she's fought on the regional scene as well thank you very much for joining me how are you feeling being over there in uh ubekistan am I pr pronouncing that correct uh you're going over with Team Island thank you for your time how how are you feeling thanks so much for having me I'm feeling great um it's definitely way nicer over here than I expected it's like lovely the weather's nice and it's like a it's a big city like it's proper proper City so um yeah we've settled in real nicely we're here with like we have a good few SG HQ gang so there's about seven of us so there's a good few of us all together and it's been amazing so far yeah and obviously you you won you your Champion you always seem to keep winning H your ground game is so so good um going into this one obviously taking the the medals from the last one does that fill you with confidence going into each competition every time you go in or is it like a BL brand new slate because it's a it's the same competition but you're going to have different opponents like how do you view does your confidence carry over from each well that's the way I feel like it's the same competition but it's completely different opponents like none of my opponents that I fought last year are fighting this year so the it's a different kettle of fish like it's something else so I don't let that kind of get into my head or anything obviously I'm going to say I'm the champ like because I won last year but um you know I haven't beat all these girls before so so you know it's a new challenge for me to kind of overcome yeah and especially going over to the IMs over here it's hard to get match regon especially at your way um because you and Lisa are kind of the same way and I'd say you're probably trying to get opponents for both can be quite tough do you like these competitions because you know girls are going to show up there's going to be girls there at your way class yeah yeah that's it like you know to get gold I have to fight three times minimum max four but I'd say it'll only be three um and you that's three fights that I wouldn't have got you this year like my next fight after this at strawweight so I wouldn't have got any more atomweight fights this year in Ireland definitely so it's nice to be able to have a nice good few fights to finish off the year yeah and and what the year has been and like at the minute you're over there with Team Ireland I know he all over representing the country um I was talking to earlier you went to a UFC Gym talk to us about that like like you must be just like does it feel surreal kind of at the minute with the way your life's gone yeah it's just like life's just going amazing like if you talked to me a couple years ago like this was nothing what I was doing like I was just doing Jiu-Jitsu and I wasn't very happy with like myself and didn't know what I want to do in life and like then I found MMA started doing that and like my life is just becoming like you I'm living my dream this is my dream this is what I want to do for the rest of my life I want to train and fight for as long as my body will allow me so like it's just been it's been surreal even going to the UFC gym and being welcomed in there it's amazing facilities like it's just it's amazing it's dream come true yeah know I it must feel surreal and it's just when you're over there um as a group what's it like because obviously uh the team members changed uh from time to time yourself and one or two others are kind of like your always there like do you see this as an opportunity to gain new friends uh training Partners stuff like that yeah yeah like I mean to be honest there's like me and Lea are the only girls here this time so there's not really many people you I mean our my size I kind of gain as training Partners but at the same time like I'm supporting everyone from Team Ireland like they'll go over and watch everyone tomorrow and it's nice to get to know even like the lads down from Cork and stuff like that that you wouldn't be training with or talking to um if it wasn't for these competitions really so it's nice to kind of get to know everyone else in the Irish MMA scene not just kind of the Dublin Lads yeah and one thing I've noticed about you over the past year and and I I always kind of point to you as an example for this um your social media the way you kind of put videos it like with having to train uh everything else like how do you find the time and do you feel that's helped boost your profile cuz I've looked at your F and I think the live last one of the last lives I've done with you was probably my highest viewed highest liked it was crazy numbers um do you found that has boosted your profile and uh you find the social media has really helped you kind of stand out as a fighter 100% like you know IMA have their eyes on me a lot more like so that's something that's awesome you know and have like just doing the social media like it's hard for me to get matched as it is so if I have a name behind me and they know that I get views and probably sell tickets like that's that's what people want and that's what promoters want so that's why I started to begin with I wasn't getting fights so I was like you know what I'm going to make you want me to fight you know what I mean w you want me to fight find someone for me to fight so that um you know I get a couple more fights so I definitely think like doing the social media and stuff like that like followers are currency these days so I think every fighter should be doing something just to try boost their socials or just create kind of like a brand image for themselves yeah no I really like yours the way you put it together you've got a bit of humor in there you've got a bit of everything in there to show your character and like you said for sponsors as well it's important to to get the followers and like you said to try and get match because it is hard um I obviously you're not looking past what you're going to now next year what's what's your plans are you going to try and fight regle are you going to kind of look abroad to fight on other shows and obviously I presume you're going to be going to the IMF competitions again or are you just looking at what the task ahead and next year will be next year's problem yeah um yeah I mean I'm fighting three weeks at three weeks time like so uh in EFC down in Cork so like that's what's next for me before the year's out and that's at straw weight so the goal over Christmas is to get massive and um start fighting at straw weight so I can find some more girls to fight me because there's not enough down at atom weight so start getting a bit bigger you know move to straw weight fight straw weight for a bit and then eventually Go Pro then oh that's good that's good so obviously when you're going to be going up to St weight you're going to have to uh for this one you're not going to be able to put on a huge amount of weight is is that your your plan to just go up to St weight then because there is more fights available yeah like there's there's not much down at weight like even professionally like there's not a huge amount like one Championship has atom weight but that's actually 52 kilos is what you're weighing in at and I don't even walk around at that regularly so I just need to get bigger and you know I might who knows where I'll be in a couple years time but i' probably fighting strong way that's kind of the plan yeah no I think I think for getting fights and like I said there's very few pro at ways that I can think of in my head even I know Nadine ABT I believe she was at way but yeah I think she struggles to get fights as well um I know obviously she's after having a kid but um I'm gonna let you go because I know you're busy this week I want to thank you so much for coming on is there anything you want to say before you go thanks for having me no it's always a pleasure um is there anything you want to say for you go best the skill we know you're going to be bringing back the gold once again and the floor yours if you want to say anything before you head off just want to say thank you so much to everyone that's been supporting me like it's really been amazing the amount of support and messages I've been getting coming up to this so I just want to thank everyone so much and then I just want to thank all my sponsors I'm going to see if you can see them all in the back there as well but I just thank thank them all for believing in me and like helping me get here and just having the faith in me and just thanks everyone for the support like it really it really warms my heart and like makes my day every day just having the support from so many people so thank you everybody perfect thank you so much have a great competition and I will be talking to you soon yeah I'll have the the new belts you see that they just posted we're getting belts this year so I'll have a nice big belt next time you see me oh wow a belt that's that's pretty awesome I'm gon have to go have be awesome so I can't wait but thank you so much for having me no it's a pleasure as always and i' see you soon
