Episode one of Combat Confidential features Edson, who recently opened Locomotiva BJJ in Ireland after years of small steps toward his own jiu-jitsu business, including building his brand on Instagram while still running a food catering business in Brazil. He describes the gym name’s meaning tied to mining and trains in his home state in Brazil, opened around 20 March 2023, and is already teaching students though opening cut into his former twice-a-day training. He received a brown belt promotion he had worked toward for roughly two years of focused training, with John Kavanagh awarding the belt and support from coach Gustavo; SBG marked the moment with a video, and he had won a best BJJ competitor prize at SBG in December before the February brown belt. He plans to compete again at an Irish tournament on 13 May 2023 with cash prizes for belt divisions, which motivated him to resume hard training. He compares Ireland’s rising jiu-jitsu level to Brazil, reflects on learning jiu-jitsu through school weekend projects and capoeira as a kid, and discusses moving to Ireland about four years earlier with his wife for economic and political reasons while learning English locally. After about a year of MMA training at SBG alongside high-level pros, he tells John Kavanagh and coach Roach he wants an amateur fight and is trying the sport without a paid career plan, while the host shares personal confidence and mental-health reflections from jiu-jitsu.

hi everyone Thanks for tuning in this is episode one of the podcast combat confidential first thing I have to say please excuse the audio only this episode I had shot previously with Edson and I I just messed it up had a bit of an issue and it was the second time I recorded with Edson and I was not gonna ask him again to do a third one uh the first time we had another audio issue I forgot to charge my mics the night before so I showed up batteries are bad uh so I had to shoot with an external shotgun mic and it did not come out the way that I wanted it to and I was trying to edit it to make it as usable as possible and it just was not uh the second time another issue batteries are charged this time but I didn't have a cord plugged in all the way and I was not gonna ask an Edison to do it a third time it was just it was a pain in the ass and I was bummed that I made such a silly error so please bear with me for this episode audio's a little wonky but it's a good chat you get to here we go three two one you're in see ya go go go go go go go go go go go [Music] I would take two okay our our first uh encounter we we had some video issue or audio issues so uh welcome to the podcast thank you for having me back and you know thanks for letting me use your space it's so great I I really appreciate it and it's a lovely spot um I can't uh you know thank you enough for give me such a nice spot because I was I was searching really hard uh for either someone to use a space or for me to uh work on building my own which I had kind of started but it's just between work and you know life it just takes a second and I hadn't had time to actually finish it so thanks uh thank you very much thank you so happy again so it's okay to use this place so it is we we do I remember once you tell me that the today is more range of the support than others more brands that yeah we are doing here excellent yeah I have 100 like we should uh there's enough room in all our markets for everybody I think you know I I think that uh when there's a large variety sometimes people think that uh maybe markets might get saturated yeah but in my opinion I think that's when people maybe flourished most because then you have to find you have to find something you're really good at you know there's a bunch of things if there's a bunch of uh availability of similar products you have to find your one thing that you're good at and then that'll help you develop as a brand or a person or a business and it just makes it better and then everyone everyone they want to be successful will have to do that and the other thing I just I think that helps everyone competition helps everyone um yeah so we're here in your gym tell us a little bit about it you know so so if you want to start you just opened up in February no March this just March I think it will be now will be complete to three weeks yeah yeah yeah only three weeks yeah wow this look like more oh my gosh I think now we just opened 20 of March okay I think would be three weeks complete you know yeah so what can I say it's uh realized uh dream you know yeah I have thinking about this for a long time so now it's true how I just keep working more and more to make this to building this properly you know but I'm so happy with this yeah yeah that's great uh so what what was it when was it that you knew you wanted to have your own gym sorry when when was it that you knew you wanted to have your own gym oh I'm just look I I already have a business in Brazil when I was there you have one in Brazil yeah I have a business with the food okay like uh burgers and pizza okay catering yeah okay I already have this in Brazil so I always feel in my heart to have my own business okay since I was kids yeah no so I find one way to do this with the thing that I love with like I mean with Jujitsu you understand so I think that things can works good together no business in Jiu Jitsu and keep practices you do so just I just keep going with this organize the things and make something small to happen and make another another put everything together so but small steps to get to your kind of here yeah yeah it's more steps you know it was I a force that all I started studying about the Jiu Jitsu business in Internet yeah for no education then this keep take a body you understand so and then I did more one more thing and then I did another one I did another one and one another more bigger than that before so the thing is going to happen but you understand so that's not my really really intention I mean three years ago so but the things gonna happen and then I start to make something and then here we are you know she I think I start to think a real and have a gym two years ago you know but the things start real happened two years ago yeah yeah I I started to keep my my brand in Instagram after this I did there my harsh glass and then I did more one more step and then another then here we are today with the properly gym we already have a few students yeah that's it you know so tell me tell me a little bit about the name look on the table that's no look it is this it's uh for the reason in my state in Brazil the name is you know Mina is like a gold Mina silver okay these stuffs my stage so rich with these minutes you know so and then there it's a very popular this train locomotiva train you know okay that's why the name so and then look motiva it's like um this means if you stop the front of the material you know it's gonna never stop just like um take a long time to to start yeah and then but when you start nothing can stop you understand that's why I put this name it's a strong name this it's a it's about my state it's about my regions in Brazil That's why I post because there's a lot of meaning behind it it's not just uh you like trains it's uh there's a lot of meaning behind it yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah it's not about the properly trained it's about the the main of this you know so the strong it's a little bit uh how can I say not lazy to start but when it started it never stops yeah it slowly start yeah gradually build up and then now you're just uh some train going down the rails you can't stop yeah if you see something something take a long time to to start but something start so fast you know but my my reason my my my way it's to start slowly but do not stop you understand yeah that's mean local motiva for me that's awesome yeah it's awesome yeah I like it you know so let's talk about you a little bit um just recently we're promoted to Bravo how how did that feel was that something you were expecting did you think it was gonna because you got how long have you been how long were you I think maybe four of us for two years oh two okay so it's not it's not too long no um but so was this something you were expecting did you expect to get your brown belt when you got it or were you thinking like um you know another two years from getting it still or I need to you know do some more competitions or how how did you feel when you got your promo [Music] I think that I do every single day I make my life around this you know it's so happy but I will be honest with you I was expecting for this because I work hard you know yeah yeah you do yeah two times two times a day you know so I I really was expecting for this so but and the rise I was so happy when I received I mean probably if like I received from John Kavanagh you know it's a big guy in there yeah the fight marketing you know so I'm so happy for this and my coach Gustavo also gave me support give me the uh I mean attention in my might develop you understand yeah so man how can I say well it's not happy you know yes you know and then in the SVG or gym so they make one video they make a lighter one like yeah I never received this before was so special situation when I received my my about so and then a few modes ago a few months before yeah I received my brown belt I received one price you know about the best BGG competitor and SBG yeah yeah so yeah that was in December I think it's December and February I received my brown belt you know so to have things true to happy things happen in the short space of time and also then this year for me start very very well you know we we deserve right because the the pandemic was a for everybody I don't know that's that train picking up at speed you know yeah yeah so you're training you're still training with twice a day most days of the week so look since I opened the gym I I have no time to train a lot as I was doing before okay but I'm keep trying teaching them you're teaching them yeah which is yeah in my experience teaching is very critical in learning yeah it shows it helps you develop where your weaknesses are so if you're teaching someone a skill or a tactic or anything oh yeah and you don't know it perfectly then you know where your weaknesses are so yeah I mean if you're teaching in my opinion you're still you're still training man to me look for me to train with my students here of course is a pleasure but I feel like I'm I'm Superman because I I still miss everybody here past the guard I do everything that I want to do okay but I don't make this I need guys to put pressure to me to feel in the bad situation to escape to create things you know so I have no time to train like I was doing before but this week now I will start again because I have one competition to do okay so that I'll turn my focus around this and then I'll keep put myself to push myself you know so I think we always need these I think I'm probably need this one competition welcome competition way to push me up to put my focus and keep training myself you know I can do not uh be late I can do not like I don't know this English but this word in English but I need to train you know yeah but you totally understand um tell me about the accomplish coming up so it's a Irish tournament this my friends of my old gym that are streaming for this just meditating so they are organizing this tournament so they will pay you know it's interesting because nobody pays to dgd competitors you know this is so you can potentially win money yeah I did but they were good money yeah that's a thousand a thousand and a thousand five hundred Euro you know I just subscribed man that it's a Irish Irish nibbling tournament I don't know why you're gonna post this but this this competition will be 13 of uh May and I don't know this might get out there before then yeah so look take a look take a look is it it explains me the I guess the competition is it like an absolute so it's uh different belts mixed with each other for I'm not sure but I think we'll be a thousand for purple and blue and a thousand five hundred for uh black belts and brown belt it's something like that you know but it's a good money you know they paid nothing than other competitions you know I think if this it's so important that you pay to to push your competitors too absolutely yeah in Jiu Jitsu was a sport you know like unfortunately like a lot of other kind of I guess I say Niche but that's not the right word but uh a lot of these kind of sports that are not necessarily mainstream like there isn't a ton of money in it yeah you know you have to develop a brand or open a gym or something in order to really to make a living doing it and yeah that is fantastic that uh that that they're so announcement that that's yeah that's paying pay for these you know so look you as a competitor you pay to give harsh guards yeah Supermans you should pay them the gym you understand all that adds up so you just spend the spend you spend spend money and then when you're gonna compete you're sure to pay this and compare the compression the competition yeah you should pay this if you want to watch one for one event with quality like um yeah no man it's expensive yeah it is it's a year but it's still expensive you know so we just spend money why why they can do not pay I don't know 100 200 something something one game tenor one gear yeah but it made nothing you know they pay nothing absolutely nothing so that's why I want to compete this tournament yeah so because they give and they give a price it's not a huge money like a professional but it's something yeah yeah I mean a Grant's a good something you know I I grab this yeah you could do with the Gradle now and I will beat a lot in Jiu-Jitsu yeah a lot here in Ireland but I never received nothing for this have you ever seen the matter but okay how do you feel overall about the the competition level in Ireland that you've experienced look I want to have competing Brazil a lot also yeah in Ireland so when I when I arriving at Ireland so I pick up a year and I was completing where I do it's a different level in Brazil we have a much more high level okay but now in Ireland with the new gyms for around so I think the level is going it's grow it's growing you understand it's sub being like an equal you know who's getting up there look the level here in Ireland it's not low more you know so not quite Brazil yeah but it's getting there man it's good to hear yeah it's it's I know it's it's a little level you know so here for example we have uh Good Guys the competing big competition like some McNally uh Sean Dave sometimes from here to compete so my coach um for example Gustavo and my quote before George Santos they compete a lot but they live here in Ireland you know so we have a good good guys here in Ireland yeah the good levels you know so that's good I'm I'm happy to hear that I know that in Ireland like it is a relatively popular yeah Jiu Jitsu yeah it's not uncommon for me to to run across so many movies interesting because I think the people's here and Ireland I'm not sure because I don't know very well about the cultural here in the country but I think the people here like more about the boxing you know yeah because I I saw around a lot of books in small box gyms the big ones also you know I think they like more they striking is striking sport but did you just it's growth year you know this you're very good news like the MMA yeah Irish mma's become so like it you know Jiu Jitsu is critical if you're gonna do anything tonight yeah look the most part of the people do not like grappling you know yeah but so contacts close contact you know so sweat that each other yeah I I saw you post one on one me minutes yeah you know just get a sweat sweat drip porn in your face so it's the most part of the people do not like this this is a good news for us relation of the jujuices that's a good news it's awesome so as far as Jiu-Jitsu is concerned you started when you're quite young back in Brazil and I know you had said to me before that uh you started off when you were in school it was offered uh as kind of like an extracurricular in school so like um kind of how here in Ireland you know the young kids might play GAA or soccer uh for you like that Jiu Jitsu was something that was offered by the school yes yeah yeah yeah and then that's how you were introduced to it right yes yes yes yes yes yes look in this school they have a project and this project the school is open on the weekends okay so and then few Professor it's put itself to give these classes but they receive nothing they give for free for kids and also it's complicated to keep this for a long time this compile happened for three months and then okay this this way I know Jujitsu you know I meet you Jitsu or in one of these projects but not just YouTube they have a capoeira you know capoeira yes football did you do that yeah yeah yeah actually I I start with the capoeira right oh yeah it's funny it's nice it's very nice so most part of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or Brazil MMA fighter start from the capoeira you know okay so and then you can resume I start and they complete and then I tried to do so and the first time I love it this I said I want to do this for all my life so but you know this project when they had it another day not and then I just keep trying to do this for a long so that's why of the I start you know so but when I was Keen teenager I should choose or keep doing this or work or something like that you know so I go to work when I was with 21 years old I started trying to do this again so after this I do not stay or do not stop more and then here I am with 29 years old keep doing digital every day you know so that's the way I start in the martial arts so you've been doing the decisions you were kid you're 29 now yeah yeah yeah so what uh what is something that you think is valuable that you've learned that Jiu Jitsu was taught you what what's what's something that you live with and use maybe every day look I mean you were asking about what I learned in Jiu-Jitsu that I use every day so look I once I listen one guy one master into just saying something so this I keep to myself you know because is the most democratic things in the world because it doesn't matter if you be there Elon Musk or if you work on the street sweep in the street you know or make everything in your life and one billionaire in the mat if you do not train your money your skills out you [Music] who do not save you you know it's a democratic you understand yeah so I think this we can say for our life because if you do not think that you should do nobody will like you feel sorry for you you know so you should do what you should do I think is the same in Jiu Jitsu in the life of okay out of the mat you know it's uh I think the most beautiful thing in Jiu-Jitsu it is is this you know so it's Democratic you get what you put into it so if you're showing up one day a week you're going to progress like someone who's shown up here but if you're every day twice a day it's really gonna it's really Gonna Shine you know you know like yourself your football for two years yeah you know and I don't think that's overly uncommon uh to be promoted after that but I think probably for the most part most purple military purple belts for what three or four you know that's probably a little more common um it yeah there's a saying that uh it's the mats don't lie you know so yeah you can like you said Elon Musk Beethoven whatever like uh you know you don't have all this money can't save you there um you know so it yeah exactly so I understand and you can that's something you certainly could use in everyday life you know be it uh you know your day job or with your family or maybe you have another hobby that you like to do yeah overall for myself with the eye it's given me kind of like this overwhelming sense of confidence you know and I've always been a relatively confident person but it's like a newfound confidence you know it's like a I feel a bit safer and more secure yeah in myself you know I guess just physically really um you know it's a lot less likely for you know that I might become a victim of something you know and then yeah even even if that's not actually the case in my head that uh that's the case you know so I just have that that that feeling of confidence in my head and uh you know that just helps me walk around just uh you know a bit more happy a little more motivated than maybe I would a couple years ago yeah I understand look in I think in Jiu Jitsu and the the life so for example Jiu-Jitsu if you'll be in the bad situation for example one half guy passing your guard with his shoulder in your chest yeah oh yeah you should to find one way to escape of this situation you can bring this for your life you know so if something is happen in your life it doesn't matter you just shoot to find one way to escape all this situation you know so think think yeah this is definitely it's like we take a brief we find one space just to to brief a little bit just to write them what can I do what can I do oh I know I'm gonna push his shoulder and Escape my hips yeah I I wish I hope God's Gonna help you so I'm gonna get his back you understand I think it's the same in your life if something if something bad has happened you know you can first of all you'll think you rest and you think what can I do in this situation it's not just to take a bit crazy or you know I think you just happened a lot of people in this I know I know a lot of people who has before and before a problem with uh by the name uh on the city anxiety yeah you know yeah so the mental problem with the bad mental health you know so and then it start to do so problem with the confidence as you say so in jiu jitsu it's helping to to improve these problems not to improve the fact to resolve this problem if you understand so I think it's uh not just a sport not just a fight but it's a therapy you know you can't do this through your life and help yourself I would agree 100 and I think there's so many of you out there that would agree with you because there are mental health factors that Jiu-Jitsu can help resolve again it's it's so fascinating to me that this combat sport this very physical sport where you know you could you know there's a potent for you to get seriously hurt um it really does help you know mentally with things and I don't know the other sports really can do that or I don't know maybe they can I'm not a big participant in you know other sports uh but I've never heard anyone talk about the mental health benefits of soccer or of you know the hockey or something like that you know so I don't know if Jiu Jitsu is unique in that yeah or maybe if it's just it's maybe it's easier for a larger amount of people to reach that type of uh or to achieve that type of benefit from doing look when when you or me or every person when they start you do so you start to walk differently yeah you walk more like more with more posture you know not not because you are a killer you know tough guys change yeah you know you walk you you you know to you walk different you talk different you know some people if you see some people before to train before starting training and after you start to turn some people when we receive at the gym I have a gym I can't tell I can say this because when the peoples come here to train they start I I want to and then one or two weeks after they are talk more confident they walk more confident you know so the people want to they they make new friends you know because they have something new to to talk to than other people's you know so I see just benefits with it you know I just I see just benefits with this so that's why I love you this you know this change my life this changed the life of the thousands of another peoples around the road it's a it's a it's a good this is very good actually yeah now okay I know I can talk about Jiu-Jitsu all day and so yeah all week with anybody uh just to the point where I think my wife she just kind of tunes out when I start talking yeah um do you have any do you have any other Hobbies is there something like another another Pastime no no no no really no you don't do anything else nothing you have like a bicycle you're gonna ride or uh to look do you like a knit I I have it before it's a motorbike yeah but my true robs I become in the job soon that makes sense yeah this is my world bike today to work out of the gym you know and I use Jiu Jitsu to work to myself so I take my two rubs and become to myself a little bit um am I right yeah you are aspiring to to have some MMA amateur women make bubs so no no no no look um training MMA for one year so now I tell to my coach uh coach roach and John kavana so that I'm looking for a fight okay they are looking for this fight to me you know I think I'm ready okay I'm ready to go in the cage indeed uh in the grade in the cage with another assassin tried to kill me I think I'm ready to do this to what way would you find out um my coach told me that I I do not lose lose a lot of kill so compete in a master you know so I think I'll I'll find my my same way now it's a 94 94 and four and three yeah I think it's time three all right so I have I have Trend with the big guys I have shared with the wheel flairy with the journeywalker calmore I train with these guys every single day you know so yeah of course I'm not I'm not them you know but I can do something in the cage with one guy with my same weight with my same level with my same skills you know just so true put this myself speaking and training you know how does it feel to be training with such a high caliber you know professional athletes yeah you know these are athletes that are at like you know the top of their game all the time always ready to kill yeah so yeah how does that how does it feel to have that type of those type of training partners so look as we was talking before in the beginning the the podcast so I need I need these guys to push me up to push me put me growth you know so to be honest I love I love when I'm on the cage trying with this Hive guys because they make me growth you know they make me they make me they may push myself you know so when I try to eat this this big guys I feel man I'm I was feeling that I'm good and I'm not so good you know I improve a lot because if I do not improve a lot this big guys will kill me yeah they're gonna crush me like like a pasta crack you know so that's why um keep training because if I do not train these guys will kill me so when I'm trying I improve myself when this happened I I care about my I care about my body my my mind my body even also I think I think it's I have just benefits When I train with these guys you know so we have a good group there in the our gym in SBG absolutely yeah absolutely and you you look on the mats you have 70 MMA fighters on the maximum hope so this is good I love it the overall level of just pure talent walking around the gym is there yeah they can kill everyone yeah you understand they can kill everyone young guys it's 16 years old 15 years old they're Killers small Killers you know it's one murderers walking around yeah you did so and uh martial arts is democratic this this young guy will kill you on occasion also I once you ask me about the Hobbies you have I think my hobby now it's MMA you know okay because I I do this just because I I like just because I I want I'm not professional or I even never fight before but I love to be there every single day trying to do this these guys you know so now for nothing because I I never compete so I never received money to train or something like that I just go there because I like it I think this is my new run now you know yeah until I become this in there good job you understand yeah do you have aspirations of making a like a professional career on MMA or is it something that you you just want to try and just you know see what happens yeah I'm gonna try just to see what happens you know as I did in Jiu Jitsu your eyes I did come to them I really changed some things in my life you know I just go take a look and see what happened if nothing happened and come back I'm back to the point that it was before and go to the different way you understand yeah that's perfect that's a great um uh it's a great way to look at it you know you just see what happens it doesn't work out you know whatever just go back doing this and try something else you know that that's that's awesome I think that's a good uh mentality to have when you're trying anything new yeah you know just to just just give it a try you know that way you don't have to worry about you know thinking what if you know and unfortunately with a lot of Combat Sports um fresh Lake MMA yeah you know people tend to what I call age out meaning that you know once you hit a certain age you know like a professional career is probably a bit unrealistic yeah you know for some people um I mean there are some freaks out there who you know who could be in their mid-30s or 30s and just start out and then just you know make something out of the but uh they're very far between and you have to be a very special person for that oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah um look the first time that I I'm just trying to do it so I have a thing in two to have my own gym out of my country I've never seen this before even when I start back with 20 21 years old I never was thinking in in have a gym in the island yeah I discovered about Ireland when I was I don't know 35 years old when it comes to that you know so look in Brazil some people said North Ireland and South Ireland yeah you know because it's not common this country for us it's the most common uh Mexico United States because it's close yeah yeah you understand so I started to discover something about Ireland when I was with 25 years old you know so to get a gym here so but the things going happen and happen and happen you understand yeah I guess what are the circumstances of you moving to Ireland what what brought you here so my wife is a cousin okay she come to to Ireland so a long time ago I think eight or nine years ago yeah and then Brazil was not so good for us the political political problem corruption yeah something like that so I received with my wife so to change was thinking in the United States or Portugal it's the most common for Brazilian peoples yeah so and then we start to talk with my wife because in about here she said lovely things about the country it's a nice country the people's receive very well has a good economy so that's why we we decided to to move to Ireland you know so after this I never think and leave early before right yeah never never I I mean I love this country I love you yeah me too I I love it as well how long time were you here I've been here just over six years six years yeah yeah I have here for four years yeah straight four years did you did you speak English before you came here no nothing no I look I think my English is not perfect you know but I think it's enough your English is yeah it does it's fantastic oh much better than any other language that I speak so um I think your English is great um I have no complaints but did you what was there a language barrier when you moved here no I start to study English to speak English here okay I never had I never studied before even my wife never stood English before she didn't she didn't speak English either no no no English right yeah you know yeah she speaks very open she never did the class I mean when I say this story it's about classes you know about the school yeah right no no my wife for example she started to study English on the watching Series in the Netflix she loved it her friends friends and another one with the medical you know uh this is part of all but good friends okay never end never end you know the the main actress there yes 70 years old and we start with 18 years old never had lots of Seasons that's fantastic I've heard that a lot before um you know of people moving somewhere they don't necessarily know the language and they they pick it up you know partly going you know to school but also partly uh you know from television you know either watching like kids programs or just television in general um I think it's fantastic I I I wouldn't like when I moved here like I mean of course there are like a lot of nerves involved but like I didn't have the complication of not knowing how to speak the language yeah you know so that that's that's a first of all that's incredibly brave for both of you you know and I applaud anyone who who will do that you know and as far as Ireland is concerned yeah like what like like you said earlier one of the things that is great about Ireland is just they're very accepting you know like uh it's not uncommon for
