Energized host Ross interviews Kiya O'Sullivan shortly after she returned to Ireland with IMMAF World Cup junior gold from Prague. Kiya describes the buzz of the tournament week, pride in representing Ireland on the national team, and having her brother Alex with her—an four-time IMMAF medalist who handled logistics while she focused on fighting. She recounts winning silver at age 16 about two years earlier, then training twice daily from January 2021 for roughly nine months to earn gold, an emotional moment she had chased ever since. Kiya outlines a long martial arts path: twelve years of training since age six across judo, jiu-jitsu, home boxing with her boxing-coach father, and CMAC MMA from about age eight. Now eighteen, she credits MMA for confidence and health, names Alex plus stars like Valentina Shevchenko, Weili Zhang, and Ronda Rousey as influences, and says Alex will turn pro in his next bout after finishing his final college year, likely not fighting until next summer. She beat a fellow Irish fighter named Megan in the final—bittersweet—and notes Kerry, Shauna Bannon, and Chanel among the strong Irish women’s scene, with Kerry and Chanel having fought at Cage Conflict the prior month. Coaches Danny Neal, Paddy Houlihan, Andy, and others supported the Prague camp. Looking ahead, she wants more amateur fights, another junior IMMAF cycle, senior IMMAF gold around age twenty-one, then turning pro—possibly leaning Bellator in roughly three years. Knife Edge fencing sponsored her gym through COVID hardships.

[Music] energize show up the irish okay what's going on guys welcome to a brand new episode of energized ross introduce the guest today we have imaf world cup junior champion it's koya o'sullivan show us the gold medal there it is there it is coyote how are you doing i'm doing good job tell us this did the phone blow up more when you won the gold medal or did it blow up more on your birthday no definitely when i won the gold yeah everyone loves that piece of gold baseball don't they exactly that's what we had to get koi on the show for people that don't know coyle's fresh offer go-willing uh like uh sorry representing ireland and winning the gold over in prague uh coyote you're just back now with the goal what's that how's it been since you got back to to around oh it's just it's been buzzing i mean i went back training straight away really because i don't really be doing anything else but yeah it's just being great like the eye mask is mad like the way you just gotta fight every day like it's such a long week so i'm glad to be back i'm just chilling i'm only training like once a day now just kind of chilling out eating and all that oh yeah it's been fun yeah i'd say it's a mad buzz over there what i like going over sort of as a national team knowing that you all represent ireland i think it's great like i think it's a bit disappointing that like the government and all they don't really care but like we're all there and we're so proud to like represent our country so everyone there like everyone on the team is like they're just the best people i've ever met like honestly they're all just so bang on so it's something to be really proud of and i'll always remember it like when i get older and all something that i did in my life that i'd be proud of and i suppose you had a bit of a unique position over there because you had a family member over there with you as well uh was that give you a bit of extra home comfort knowing you had your brother there oh 100 i don't know what i do without my brother like i literally need him with me nearly all the time so i'm really lucky that i have him and he's done the eye mask four times he's meddled four times as well so i literally like couldn't have anyone better so like get me through it he knew everything what to do what time to get up right away in he just knew everything so i just followed him around like i just let him do everything for me yeah that's that's definitely one thing like looking back into the background you yourself are previously a silver medal winner so was your brother and now now you brought home the gold what was that like winning the gold like i'm sure alex was uh more than proud for you was he yeah he's really happy especially because it was two years ago now when i was 16 i got the silver so since then like i really wanted to get the gold so i don't think i've trained like i've trained so hard these last two years because it's been something i've really thought about like since january this year i've had my mind on the imap so it's like nine months now i've been in training we're just preparing all the time and training twice a day just focused on it so it meant everything to me like i was so emotional after like i couldn't stop crying and i like i was in the doctor's room and he's trying to ask me questions and i'm like trying to like compose everything i was it was just so like oh i just needed it like i worked so hard yeah ross one thing we've noticed is a common feature people that tend to not achieve gold straight away come back even stronger and then it's just been proven there yeah 100 i think when you lose it's actually a good thing because you realize like i gotta work harder even now and like you see a lot of the mistakes that you made sometimes when you start to go like on a winning streak you might get a bit confident and think you know i have this all right now but when you lose it's kind of a news flash like there's really good girls out there and you need to like get your [ __ ] together and start focusing on whatever your holes are whatever it is and koi obviously you come from a fighting background i believe your dad was a boxing coach alex is probably the what would i say the most experienced amateur mixed martial artists the country's ever seen do you feel that that adds a bit of pressure to yourself people know who you are when you go to fight no not at all actually i i really like that my family are involved i think mma especially it would be quite hard to explain to your family like oh i want to fight in a cage for a living like it sounds a bit mad so no i i like it better that my family are involved i don't really care what people think like if you start to care about that stuff like everything just becomes so much harder it's so much more of a stress so i try to only care about the people within my circle and that's all that matters to me yeah uh another thing for people who don't know like you obviously started mixed martial arts at a very very young age can you sort of just bring us through your journey because obviously you're 18 now it's like just can you tell us a bit about your background yeah so this year i've been training 12 years now so that's mad like i can't believe it even myself i mean such a long time i started judo jitsu when i was six and i was just kind of doing a bit of boxing like with my family and my dad and stuff like at home and cmac my gym now was open about 10 years i think yes about 10 years i was about 8 when i started training there as well and i just kind of was hopping in and out of jiu jitsu judo mma say it's been 12 years now which i just think is crazy that actually is insane like there's probably people who are way older than you who have way less experience which is sort of crazy in its own way and that's sort of what i want to touch on to you next i obviously seen you plan on going pro you plan on making this your career who did you look up to as a youngster to be honest it was actually my brother to be honest like there are a lot of like i love um valentina shachenko and wadi zang like i think they're amazing ronda rousey obviously is like a major person she like paved the way for women's mma well someone i definitely look up to is my brother just because we have the same lifestyle like there's nothing different we live in the same house we eat the same food we have the same culture so like if he can do as well as he has so can i and i just got to watch him do and i just yeah he's definitely someone i watch and want to be like and how many more voices alex have until he goes pro he's gonna go pro now in his next fight he's just doing his last year in college so he's not gonna fight probably until next summer but he's definitely gone pro now yeah he's definitely another one to watch out for basma yeah yeah yeah uh coyote what's it like just try to train like full time and being so committed or something at such a young age as well um like how's that how has that really benefited you but outside of fighting i just think like probably confidence like i think if you can get into a cage and fight like there's not really anything else you can't do like it's yeah because i used to be kind of shy like timid kid and stuff and but mma has kind of changed that like i have way more confidence and you're just healthy as well like health is the main thing too yeah so yeah it has just such major benefits yeah i i think um women's sports is actually coming on leaps and bounds so much uh more nowadays and you're actually seeing like yourself these athletes who have started from a young age and they're doing the more mainstream sports like if you look in tennis and i think emily rata county won the u.s open there she had to qualify for it then went and won it so uh i think you know when you take your experience that you've been doing this for 12 years you almost feel like you can go in there and be competitive with anyone on the planet yeah yeah no definitely like it's it's nearly a surprise to me how long i'm training but then at the same time like i can't even remember not training it's just always something that i did like i can't even remember like the first time i joined the gym like i don't have that memory like it's just something i've always done so yeah i'm well prepared to start fighting now yeah it's just in your dna and like looking at the the irish i'm a team like we want to give a master shout out to the whole entire team i know they picked the three goals master shout out to sean abandon as well and ryan kyo we were trying to get in torture ryan to get on but uh he'll get back to us for some more stage but shauna bannon is another person that's just uh doing unbelievable things like hanging around with shauna will you learn enough shauna yeah no i think sean is great like and i'm definitely gonna try like train with her now in the future and be teammates because we're not even really in the same weight division or anything so we're not really gonna be fighting each other so yeah i'd love to train with sean in the future because they're striking it's like amazing it was actually great to see the irish women uh not saying that that the men didn't do great as well they did but it was great to see the irish women you know fight each other in the final as well how did you feel about your fellow country woman for the world cup gold yeah you know it was it was kind of [ __ ] like i would have liked the two of us to be able to get gold and all that but yes i really like megan like she's really nice i trained her before but it's just something that we had to do and you know i think she's a great fighter she was a good person to fight for the final like it was a great fight um i'm happy it's like it's bittersweet yeah also kerry fought sean and the other phone ross as well all our unfolds i was actually speaking channel the other day and i was like oh jesus like kerry and channel he fought like last month in cage conflict so yeah i mean it's it's a it's one of those things where there probably isn't as many competitors in the women's division across the world as much as there is therefore you're probably bound to run the same people over and over and over again but um what's next he also makes it also makes the irs scene like so much better as well with more women yeah definitely coyote what's what's next for you are you going to start looking and taking other amateur uh fights and how many you think you'll take before you do make that switch to pro yeah definitely i'm gonna try and look to fight as much as possible i'm definitely going to do another imap my main goal me and my coach decided like i'm probably going to try getting a senior imaf hopefully so that'd be when i'm 21 hopefully get the gold and that and then go pro so i'll probably be going pro at about 21 because i would love to do a senior i'm off because the seniors is obviously like a lot harder than the junior so if i can handle myself and that that's when i'll know i'll be ready to go pro but yeah i'm gonna look to fight as much as possible and obviously you're probably your final destination would be the ufc but do you see when you go pro do you have a directory you want to go like do you want to go cage warriors route do you want to go fight overseas maybe somewhere like brave or you know would you be open to going to bellator if they're you know still doing as many dublin shows as they do yeah 100 like i haven't fully sourced out what i'm going to do i kind of i'm leaning towards bellator i've seen but they seem to look after their fighters but i'm not 100 sure i'm gonna see how things change over the next few years because i won't say i'd say be another about three years until i go pro so also sit out but bellator seems to be the one i'm looking at right now yeah well who knows pfl put down a million dollars if you win their tournaments at times and that could always be a nice and you know what coyote silva loves an l tournament format yeah i also saw as well in one of your interviews that you were the first ever you were in the first ever women's ima fight is that correct yeah no it was the first that you thought i must fight so i wonder that's another feather in the cap as well yeah yeah the these these accolades keep coming and coming and i think you know as long as you keep on putting in that hard work these things will definitely come and fall fall into your lap uh one person that i think we ask all females about is uh katie taylor i know your dad was a boxing coach how much on a scale of 1-10 how much do you love katie taylor and how much is she an inspiration to you 100 10 out of 10 like she's just saving like she just proved that like there's no question like women can be technically as good and skilled as men like she's just like perfection at what she does she she's actually our favorite foiler koya have you ever asked me about you we will tell you katie taylor's our favorite we love her i know she's amazing and then shout out to kelly harrington as well that must've been killed as well yeah yeah definitely and can you tell us what the experience was going over with the arts team this time around and like uh just what the sort of atmosphere was like and like how important the coaches were just uh on site because obviously there was the likes of like danny neal in there and iran and patty hound et cetera what was that whole atmosphere like oh everyone is just great like all the coaches were just sound as [ __ ] like i danny was training with me a couple weeks before so i had her there but she also trained at megan sells a bit you know but everyone is amazing on that team like there wasn't one person that we didn't get along with there's no drama everyone is just bang on like and the coaches are all amazing like we had paddy houlihan andy and all like they're just the best coaches that you can get really we're all there yeah we saw as well that like when everyone was fighting everyone was like posting on stories it was actually a great way to really network as well and just really watch each other team were like the best there like for sure like in the audience they were so like loud like they just scream and there's the they're definitely like the most supportive team there for sure yeah ross what do you make of the overall the irish mma association overall i think i think they knocked it out of the park i think this time going over there they had all their ducks in a row not saying they didn't before but i think this is the best they've ever gone over the most prepared they've ever gone over you know everyone was wearing like the same gear and stuff like that like a rook like a real unit of a team it actually was it actually looked like it was an olympic team going over exactly that's what it looked like and you know what it it actually gave me a great sense of pride that irish amaze and safe hands and shout out to the omf team because i as far as i i'm aware call you'll probably correct me they're actually coming out with a national tournament yeah you're competing yourself oh yeah definitely i'm not sure like i think there's something going on with covert so i'm not 100 sure it's going to happen but if it does happen i'm definitely going to be there yet and i suppose you'll be the one to beat them there won't you yeah big target on the back yeah then uh like of course we're gonna we're gonna leave you with the last word like what what do you want to sort of tell the people that are tuned in now maybe they just did the senior for the first time here or maybe they saw your winning goal for the first time what you want to say to them that like you to expect from yourself for the foreseeable future well my plan is to just continue fighting do some more imaps do senior imaf and then gopro so yeah that's pretty much all i'm trying to do you're just going to see me fighting as much as i can and i'm just going to continue to train every day that's my plans and you have any sponsors you need to shout out yeah the main sponsor is knife edge that they looked after so well over covet because you know it's really hard at the last year like my family owned the gym so everything could have got [ __ ] up really if it wasn't for them so they're like the major ones yeah knife edge and what do they do sorry they build fences oh cool you need somebody's build so many if you need a fence you know where to go we need a fence we need to take rocks there yeah maybe maybe they've been built this offensive and we'll use it as a cage um but no koi that's unbelievable uh where can people follow you on social media or where john was kyle sullivan yeah that's the thing oh geez you're on the best show in ireland according to barrymore and i'll second that yeah babe just before we wrap things up like we just want to give a few shout outs as well uh share the palahan who won over the weekend and compatibly global uh also takaman do win on his debut as well and then everyone did the irish the irish team represent representing ireland over there in prague because we love following it and we love promoting as much as we possibly can and shout out to all the coaches as well because like nobody's doing this for free and it's taking a lot of time and you can you'll only do it if you love it that's really it yeah you better believe it so guys if you have been watching this show make sure to head over to koi's instagram give her a follow and if you did enjoy this video make sure to like share subscribe and as always stay energized energized the irish and so sussing you guys a couple of times i've seen a couple of clips i think you're doing some interviews with dylan moore and then that i i saw so keep going keep up the good workers you
