James Haskell joins the Energized Show from lockdown in Northamptonshire, where he is training daily for a planned Bellator MMA debut against James Gallagher on 16 May 2020 while avoiding alcohol since 27 December 2019. He discusses life in isolation with his wife Chloe Madeley, live-stream DJ sets and workouts, and his path from England rugby (Wasps, Stade Français, Japan, Highlanders, Northampton) into MMA via David Green and coaching at London Shootfighters with Paul, Alexis, and Carlos. Much of the conversation covers I'm A Celebrity: extreme hunger rations, camp leadership, editing that cast him as a villain, and relationships with castmates including Roman Kemp and Kate Garraway. Haskell reflects on England career highlights including his 2007 Wales debut at the Millennium Stadium, a Grand Slam, rooming with Sean O'Brien on the 2017 Lions tour, and Leicester cliques in the England squad. On MMA he describes the physical and mental toll, early humility learning technique beats size, no sparring with Michael Venom Page, wanting level-appropriate Bellator matchmaking, and uncertainty about whether the London card will proceed because of the pandemic.

okay what's going on guys and welcome to a brand new episode of energized today we have a very special guest on the show we have lawyers legend in a legend on future Bellator legend James Haskell James how are you doing very well lads I'm not sure about that last part that's well I'm not sure about any of the legends require things like legend around a lot but I will take rugby keno in my former life now I don't know what and I'm an unemployed cage fighting DJ legend as well you know losing the plot because it's so hungry but there luckily saved by McCann mates and you put you know talked about in glowing terms which is great because that could have been quite just with the current situation with bears for the crown warriors run around here are you sort of used to the isolation after being non celerity sure what I am is anyway I was telling my wife I always prioritize work and training over being social it's to my detriment and friendships or whatever but I've always done that I'm actually quite like this this is like being on a holiday for me I'm never on holiday normally I always been workaholic so what I'm missing performing so all the stuff that I normally do is I DJ speaking there's obviously going in training and doing you know the cage but except but I'm actually pretty happy to us you're quite enjoy I'm busying myself I'm doing live stream DJing live stream workouts you know doing my house a rope we podcast doing pop I'm and I've done a lot for podcasts we call today you guys being one of them I've sort of just everyone has ever sent me a message about podcast I just did my PA right tell them we can do it now instead of me because every because a lot of people get Precious about doing it in person yeah who wouldn't want to do it but you can't do it anymore so now's the perfect excuse to put your pressure just to one side you get it done yeah yeah like we've had we've had some people on the show like for instance we've had Gregor che and we've had Tommy Bowen the show on the last couple of days as well it's great to just for people to just speak to other people you know rather than being totally in lockdown well there James where exactly are you base right now I'm in Northamptonshire at the moment so I'm in my house in Northampton it was a high beta when I played the wasps and we walked moved from wasp from Y Wickham to Coventry it's the same house and then when I signed for Northampton I'm actually even closer to them and said with the perfect crime so I'm just yeah just just chill in my wife's working on she was launched via website Kylie made me calm she's finishing a fourth book we're trading together we eat quite enjoying it we have them the only thing is I had another drinks at the 27th December waiting for my fight I mean my fight still on May the 16th I'm training every day I have a slight injury at the moment which is limited what I can and can't do anyway but I'm pretty sure the fights but we don't know ahead at the moment so I haven't I drink this since the 27th but I may have given it and had a bit of wine because that is the problems you sit around you like how do you avoid the day drink to be honest like I would like I would it be more of a social drinker so like sitting in not drinking is fine by me you know that's fine I'm great like I have a month I've never missed it but when my wife puts the head by the door and goes why the movie night I'm like no no a car a car ok god I can see you've been doing on the couch there doing your dirty she was she wasn't he yeah she's at my if I did the other way around she'd get her knickers of the twist but I am the constant victims my wife's crap pranks that actually been relevant to this podcast was that was when I was caught with my pants down literally lying on the bed that's why I come back from my first session of the day I mean I'm full-on sparring I'm having to go back in the night to do ground-and-pound stuff with Carlos for Ola a narrowness and I was so tired [ __ ] up in the first session I couldn't be asked my trousers off and that was at those sleeping but what she did is because she's she's a nasty piece of work she put a montage together a completely did me implying that that's what I was like in them you know it in quarantine which I don't think it's a bad thing to be but actually no exactly it was all stitcher yeah I see if it's not gonna give this take who will exactly be prepared for revenge because I will seek revenge I will take my time good and it will be just and it will be horrific you'll bring her it you'll have to fight her and on that ballot or card James a sort of format we wanted to go true was also you get the on missile empty store failed away because people are gonna obviously want to hear about that then we were entering a min career and then we'll go into the anime stores okay we go wherever you want perfect so like you're obviously enormous label to get me out of here how did that even come about I've actually been asked to do it a couple of times before but I was still playing it was never going to be possible it was the right time I've been approached through strictly as well and I basically I'm not really dancing I've obviously had lower limb injuries from playing I didn't think it was a great idea I didn't think it's gonna showcase me the best boss the way I never wanted to do reality TV it never occurred to me the opportunity arose and I just finished retired from open yet signed the Bellator contract and I was basic keen to to do something to you know obviously all my stuff is kind of public facing so you need to have a bit of a profile to get booked as the DJ's I'm not known as a good being good DJ even though I am a DJ property and I'm constantly evolving my my technique etc people booked me because I'm James Haskell a rugby player so going on I'm a celebrity you put yourself into 40 million people's palaces yeah every night it's it's such a big show and it was such a privilege to be asked that I decided that I wanted to give it a go obviously one of the things talked about start was the food you know and I was told I was told what turned out to be you know more of a fairy tale than Disney Tricia because you know nobody nobody outside professional sport or health and fitness really understands nutrition you see what people buy from supermarkets you see how people talk about food you see how people struggle to gain and lose weight and people in TV 10 I have no idea about nutrition either so that yeah because you're a big boy as well when we saw a belt or I was like geez I thought I was a monster I was I was 122 kgs when I went into that was two to six five to six yeah you're rolling that heavy weight limit answer yes yes but I came out to jumping the 110 and then I basically sat around about 117 and then because of the amount of training calories and stuff that I was consuming I and basis burn about 2500 calories a day doing MMA stuff I my calories about five and a half thousand so since I've got finished I've kind of adapted but I'm using opportunity to put on a little bit of weight so what if I go back into training when I go back into training it'll it'll come off me but I'll be slightly bigger than I was because I want to go in there right about 120 I don't one thing I'm also James from Washington John book was when I really came down to the food I felt like they try to make you HB some sort of bag guy and you know what you're doing the challenges embed the questions and you're like hands up you wanna see his fans it was that all I didn't understand why they wanted to talk about that for a mere four errors yeah I mean it was like seven is a bigger number than four so therefore seven wins you know I mean like you were so straightforward about it then everyone else seemed to like think you you were like hit therefore like I'm not few numbers yes yes so basically it is a situation so if you've ever watched that TV show like the island or wherever is it was get his contestants or people or whatever on these on these shows and the first thing people doing that the island for example is go let's go find a great Beach just gonna finally go grow Beach so instead of like setting up shop getting food building a shelter they walk all the way through takes a day they drink all their water get to a beach realizes it's it's amazing but no no good it gets tonight they've got no food they've got no nothing they can't they can't do anything and somebody will go what we need to pitch camp and at the back you'll hear who put you in charge and it's always some people just don't want to ever have any like leadership and the thing when it was a Lea we were starving you know I was eating I mean so I was having five spoonfuls so that's T Speights dessert spoonfuls of rice in the morning five teaspoons or tablespoons of what they are dessert spoons at lunch right I put them into my fitness pal that's 89 calories of rice and beans rice a you've put some cooking oil into it that's going to push it up to about 100 hundred counts so 100 calories from for most of the day and expected to kind of survive so so listening to my camp mates god bless them debate an under Babel question and get the voting wrong twice and then to be told that we've got all the time in the world when assume they answer it sooner we get the tree if we got it and the sooner we can move on with our lives and I just I'm you know in my career everybody in in my in rugby in sport and everybody deserves the opinion everybody should be able to share but at some point after everything you have to make a decision and I unfortunately you know aspirations to win that show I'm gonna didn't go in it to win it I think you know I didn't even know yet king of the junk we know didn't pay much attention to it I never watched any of it I know I made a decision and basically said look we've got to do this got to do that and people said I was a bully and you know people said for making women go first thought I was a showman it like you can't win everybody in 2022 composition is I'm offended changed my mind I was brought up properly I've got good manners I know what's gonna do I slept on the floor for six nights out of my however long because I wouldn't want to take care Gary's bed I didn't want to take food other people I did what was best luckily my camp mates as I when I left all came out and said you know he was someone that I relied or he was something got me through it he took the high out of camp he was the best which completely changed transformed it because I could have come out of there labeled bully as their own in the headlines and never worked again but luckily I was I would say I made pens for life you know I'm will say oh I actually thought everyone just ended up being so noisy Stern as he's in the bay Otto find am I going in there right bro we can edit this make James Haskell the bad guy and a car and rematch I was like I am the normal one victim here I feel victimized he was like he went I think James would win the del came out so he has to win he'll came out and then I was going really well apparently and was I've not seen it and then they just have one day where you know Andy's group for the greater good of the camp and Ferrandis mental health telling him not to keep asking about the roast dinner he wasn't gonna have and didn't eat and miss out all you've had a go at this you know cliff asking me to to throw the thing because he wanted to leave the camp and me getting film nodding to Caitlin I'm gonna film it and not stitching not stitching miles I'm getting him thrown out everyone's like you thrown cliff off EastEnders is out the camp you know a cliff story into you going I know James would do his best for me all right cliff we had a conversation on camera where you told me to throw it you don't want me to win and now you're make me I so yeah 100% edited me out as they wanted to but that's that's that you can't be bitter about that the you know Roman and Jaclyn who won all fantastic anybody could have won that my only concern was is that new editing away in a certain way you can damage your career for life and never work again and I think you know they went after me Andy being pretty quickly once we'd served our purpose of being entertaining and they kind of have a narrative but that's the nature of those shows an intelligent people understand that bottom feeders and people who don't understand anything think that's real life and it's and it's like it's a TV show we were trapped where you saw us got no extra food we were bored out my minds we sat there we did some cool challenges everything you saw is what it was but it's still a TV show that's 24 hours cut down into an hour show that's it well that's the thing as aliens as well James okay I mean you like someone has to step up and be like right everyone let's stick together because I'm sure people like ourselves in mental health issues going on around the world everyone could be affected if you're in a remote I like uneven look your phone come look at a TV you can't read barely eating someone needs to take charge right and that and that's why I got myself in it I went in there about who I was I had no idea about me no one asked me about rugby all we did it so I didn't have to be the big character that I'd normally am with I show it all I had to do was be nice put my arm around support people and that's what I got the bestowment I just carried on being busy was trying to be paternal and fraternal to people help everyone out and that was the way I did it and you know what I I really enjoyed that part there's quite a nice and when I came out people were like I bet as my friends they're like pass you you haven't take the piss at me in about 20 minutes are you feeling all right we don't like this new version of you and I'm like I'm sorry guys it just just kind of a nice guy these days and then obviously those people did you actually know going into that show none moanin Roy I'd never met him right didn't originally sign you a nubian right I knew of Kate Garraway I knew of Kate and Jenna I didn't know of Adele I didn't know Rome and I thought but you know I thought Romans dad was Ross Kemp off-gas wiving so when he went we sitting down one day and he started going yeah so my dad started DJ [ __ ] rot-weiss Ross Kemp DJ that go do anything and then he goes yeah he does he's at 80s night he lost Kemp the eighties night and I was about to say and then someone said about Spandau Ballet and then CID all you guys and I went oh God thank God that could be the worst thing in the world then it all donned me wise dad was DJing to do any sellout 80s nights and everything else but I came really good Mason Roman I never watch soap opera so I didn't know Jacqueline Andrew I I've seen actually I think at the Apollo or live at the Apollo once I think I'd seen him but other than that now I didn't really know many cliff I knew is minty because we've got guys to play with us we could Nick Easter we used to called Mincey because he look the same but that's about it that's actually true Mickey so does look a bit like Mindy and Nick's parents once and they were like hello how are you like the Pasha's people the world Nick's eyes are you know I'm not the gaze of God Nick did you go to Dalek school why are you talking like I'm not the gangster but he's that means he liked fixing Charles don't worry about it what was the hood what was the greatest experience that you had there on the show as well the greatest experience I mean look I think I enjoyed the challenges I enjoyed getting outta camp bonding with my teammates going through this I loved I never laughed so much doing that thing with being right in that darkened room it was so ridiculous you know I think what else just getting to meet people hang around the city you know city sitting camp and talking and actually getting opportunity to speak know no interaction no nothing just honest conversation and obviously also teaching yourself to avoid you know certain conversations certain people will try to convince Barack Obama was the most corrupt president ever I was like yeah probably gonna lead this conversation now and not say anything you're too sad to be filmed in really James Haskell says however there was lots of really positive stuff we talked about gender sexuality men a lot of stuff never made the show which is disappointed because it was a great platform to actually do some real good with but it just obviously not interesting so they cut it out and replace of putting a spider up some of the way around anything else a but there are any questions about Rome Stokes no that's the dual core would you another reality TV show or is that it dawn King now as I said you know the world's falling apart if somebody wants to pay me to fire me out of a cannon I will hundred percent do that it's just it interesting again you know it's I think afterwards you in the raw at their raw moments afterwards I would have I would have probably said no I wouldn't do it now I'd say yeah I don't percent do it I think it was fun it was honored to be part of a great show it's a great show you know I don't know I think strictly is difficult because I think it puts a lot of pressures on relationships yeah I think it I think it does it's very show is the right time so yeah it's very intense isn't it very intense you know you having to do you have to pretend to be sexy with someone you know the entire time and you know it's it's I think it'd be very difficult to avoid that conflict I think you put pressure on your partner and everything else to trust you and vice versa really you know look they say there's no curse or strictly but I'm not adding up but there's more you know there's more phrases of fallen part there than a divorce committee so I don't know I don't know I think you'd be brilliant a lead your own I think you'd be brilliant them up so I do know what I've done that show kappa time I would love to have gone and been a panelist I tell you I had so I did a league of their own once I went on it and I basically month off Freddie Flintoff right honor okay when I was doing some juggling thing and he said I expected more from you and I just went was fine enough I watched you box and I expected more from you I think all the world there was that right so next the next show they got me on we had this Freddie Freddie for me as a hero like he's like okay and a half the England cricket legend you know personality you know amazing guy so I really wanted to like know him never met and fought so came on the next show and I saw him and I was like you well may look really nice to meet you sorry about the last time anyway got on and we're supposed to do a fake pillow fight so but but when he came to me he said right let's see what we'll do is we'll I'll push you off early and then you gotta push me and push me well but we'll have a fake fight and they'll stop the whole thing it'll look quite good so I I thought yeah it didn't say anything to anyone was that okay anyway it it put Freddie pushing it off I square up to him he pushes me about three or four times so we have a square off looks like you know and genuinely I've always wanted to be an actor I'm not messing around I could do serious upset so I was like this you know look so serious didn't obviously I wouldn't let someone pushed me over five times and out like banging him out so I just didn't do anything okay they all the producers came down everyone panic stop so so so so and then obviously with like it sounds a hug Freddie but all I find it was a joke it was his idea was a joke no prob anyway sat back down did the show when the show went out everyone went mad Freddie Flintoff dished you are Freddie Flintoff fill you in you know all this kind of stuff right yeah so I had to come out and basically so anyway so I came out at a time that's joke obviously all the keyboard worries Freddie Flintoff about you and I was like have you seen him box and they were like saying all this all this stuff so I was like trying to be really respectful anyway the third in the series after that he's sitting with auntie Joshua they play a clip and they go they showed a clip of me and he went yeah James Haskell bit of a dick right and I completely made out that I lacked she lost my temper that it wasn't his idea and mocked me off somewhere so Angie Joshua was like laughing and I saw ads do Joshua Ben and he's like we're not seen your TV so you got angry Freddie Prinze up and I said listen and the if you weren't heavyweight champ in a world about five times bigger than fill you in and we just like and that's how we kind of we we bonded I saw you laughing don't get him I can see laughing at me but he was like and I said no I told my story it's all fake so I've never been since to invite you back on a league with their own since then so I don't think I ever will be because I obviously upset one of them the main stars and and you know maybe too much personality I don't know well I'm famous you're all being podcasters really kickin off as well yeah that's gone that's mad I mean we get 300,000 an episode listening we just turned over 11 million subscribers or viewers or worries across the thing so like 55 million minutes watched you know from something that started there's nothing in row please a relatively small spore it's it's gone pretty wild that's cool man that was just a gobble of Irish now sorry sorry subscribe who's your dream guest for have on the show I mean you know I think he's great I would love to get Ricky Gervais he's on a rock on a Swartz and Egger I want real personalities you know we obviously I want to diversify and get some more celebrities and different people on there you know but people panic because we don't talk about any rugby but everyone thinks you got to know about rugby we're like no no we don't want anybody that you know doesn't know anything we want to get MVP on there as well but you know if it's probably cuz it's sponsored by Guinness we've got we've got to adhere to some of the stuff that they say but I ultimately you know we want to expand and as it gets bigger and bigger we'll try to get more and more celebrities on there I think yeah it's it's it's really before Matt away and it's like a lads locker room sort of thing you know so I think any Ruby player or even personally was part of a team would really like enjoy it you know I hope so because also we try to get much more women on the on the on the podcast as well female rugby players but things like the are a few are so precious about Whitmore like we've got a massive platform that gets more viewers than one of your games less let's talk from there let's do it but they're all like you know lock them down it's just you know we want to open their doors to give people opportunity to be to be positive and have fun and everything else and you don't need to talk about rugby one they know about the people you want to know about stories you know that you know behind the rugby players we don't want people who I'm going to come and say anything because there's no no you know you could be open on that form not to stitch you up if you say something really awkward we'll take it now it's just about being you know having fun really yeah I think as soon as someone retires as well like they're like they're far more willing to bond and like tell the truth as opposed to when they're still at playing in the game they're afraid to offend someone yeah yeah that's always you know I've retired and minding my objective is never to monk and he might fellow team mates or players off because I don't you know I make tongue-in-cheek jokes about it but I don't want to attack people because it's not what I'm about yeah well here look we may forget into a ruby career I'll see you start off a London Wasps and then you you were currently you were playing for them when you first major England debut in 2007 and what was that like when you got your first collar frémont amazing look at it was well you think it was going to be amazing but actually it was a saucony found out I was involved because in an ex-teammate - I was driving our car park 21 shouted or Haskell you dick Oh check your email check your email when I was 21 right I had like you know I had a hotmail account I think it was like top shagger at hotmail like a really embarrassing email that you used to have as a kid you thought was pretty funny I mean in fact it turned out to be true I had I had the email and the bloke you know lo and behold on the bottom of an email trail of like Laura scenario you know Josh Johnny will be there as that top shagger hotmail comm you be invited English em no one called me out no one said welcome to squad I just and I was told to report to Bath on a Sunday Sunday afternoon so under any Jones things have changed dramatically but it was yeah it was it was interesting and obviously very exciting you know Nick Easter was touch and go whether he was going to be able to play and I ended up starting eight with them Joe were so starting six with Joe worthy Lauren still a Leo and myself all in the Mon matter oh yeah was down trickle now that was in Wales Millennium Stadium probably the biggest rugby cauldron ever you know everybody talks about crowds and the impact they have and wicked amazing place my favorite place to go and play but quiet the crowd would be quite quiet they could be quite quite corporate and if you go well they singing but if things aren't going well there they can be you know they're a bit lost but I think that's kind of nature English sport where is not necessary miss football but every other sport you know like things like rugby because you know the Irish have their identity the Welsh have their identity you know Scottish then identity all of you are united the fact you hate the English the English don't hate anyone other kind of apologetic for like seven hundred years of empire building and you know if you whereas in Georgia flag you're a leader of the BMP so it's very difficult to be nationalistic when you're English because they're tricking them quite quiet but millennium stadium the crowd you know we were we were ten we were five points down five meters from the line and this crowd was so loud with the roof closed it was like someone pushing down on your head it like pervaded every every one of your senses it's so hard to focus and concentrate it was the most intense thing but I absolutely loved it and realized that this is what you know sacrifice and everything else was worth worth giving up for and I was so keen to carry on doing it and what was it like the first time something tweaking on him what was it like the first time you playing twig yeah I mean tricking him again so I didn't get to play it tricking him until a warm-up game for the 2007 World Cup and I started 6 with Lawrence and not sure was playing seven it was amazing it was an amazing experience to actually go out tricking him you know the sights smells sounds of Twickenham are are part of my childhood you know I went there for a few games and watch wasps play there you know it's it's the ultimate ground for me to play at and it was just the best feeling to go out there sadly we lost cause old Sebastian shebar kmart came on and ran over the top of Nick abandonar there's anything to commend one's World Cup but that's a rough crew was period about yeah lovey yeah no really bullying us he never heard some English what we say about your Roy I'll heal the sick nation seems really want to beat England it's like they're their big game do you feel a lot of pressure because when we were asked we were on versus Scotland in Murray last year and the Scottish boy is in the crowd Sydenham food will start to sink chanson behaving them more than you I'll just read the huge count that just yes I mean look everybody Lazar Lee everyone levels of English is arrogant we're not at all you know some of the stuff I've had to put up from other teams in and away people conduct themselves but we're afforded that because of you know think that because of empire-building because we used to run lots of places because we used to you know invade etc and and do everything else everyone's United in our hatred you know we are the big the big country with a big budget with a bit lots of players that that people want to beat and it's very true you know if you knew any other game of Six Nations we be England the Six Nations is well done you know Wales had that a year they destroy us in the Grand Slam 38 points to something they lost every game or loss the lowly games felt you know played pretty badly and went on to beat us and and you know and ultimately beat us to go and do something with the six there was actually one in I'm not sure but anyway it was it was you know their big moment all they cared about was being us and you know it just happens but you get used to it you know I don't you know what's interesting when journalists and people asked just about ask us about it you know they always say and you're like listen I'm a sports person I don't hate anybody I hate losing ain't coming off second best and I hate playing badly who I'm playing into the if they're nice people the nice people I don't see race I don't see color then you [ __ ] it's it's um it's just down to her so I don't want to be anyone more or less than E 1 I just want to be everybody yeah would you feel any of that would to be any animosity in that British mind squad you're in no I mean well I interesting enough let everybody that comes on our podcast says you know I wanted to punch down a school for I met him I thought he was a big I didn't like him and then all of them turns to actually they found out you know I was a good globe they absolutely love me were friends for life whatever it might be gone really well and I feel pretty different to what they expected on that line store I think loads of people thought that was gonna be the case but actually I got on with everybody you know on that tour and I think generally you can have separate groups like now when the leicester players used to be on those groups with england they used to always stick together you know I don't know I think the English could sometimes be seen to be difficult but actually a lot or everyone got a house on fire I was in the midweek team or the midweek veg was we called ourselves and you know we kept everyone I kept ever I'm really happy and that was my role and I actually loved it yeah I believe you were real I believe a room with their Sean O'Brien there was that like I I mean the fact that you know all the stuff all my stuff was here stuff so when my wife sent me some treats and asked that he opened he just opened I'd eat the Ferrero Rocher I love how she sent me forever I sure as well just goes the ambassador's camera and he sent it to me and um you know and I was like we doing sure it's like room treats room treats as I know says room treat your thieving [ __ ] so he's brilliant though I loved him he was someone I always wanted to to meet and get to know he was somebody that I really admired and one hoped would be like in English first of me I want him to be that but you know he was lovely taught me loads of farmer songs you know yeah it was it was it was a great character absolutely loved him in also drink bar fellows are there's no start on Monty a fella he can go big when he's on it but he's obviously very professor it's great to share love the guiness change something you touched on there about Lester you're saying that Indian is called some some players that Mike's had their own little cliques almost was that it was like at the hallway sure your career or as things went on through the years that did you become more of a unit house in the team had that problem and now they're all girls seem to be very very close we don't know we'll go on we never anything less or just the rogue for no other reason there and they didn't seem to be able to operate without each other wholly owned in their hands but that was that you know as less Lester players got involved in the squad that was that was not the case they're all still good lads and played very hard and worked you know worked with intensity but they were like the Borg from star of Star Trek they've got one mind the way to breakfast together lunch go went out together did nobody together and I've never planned to go meet anyone for lunch I mean most people try to avoid me pesticides so you just to see him together I was like how are they doing who's running the admin on this group of like robots it just go around you know together it was them it was bizarre it used to cause a bit of friction because allows about no clutter because like that's where a great down as well I went yeah yeah and they did and they start together and then that kind of followed in for the younger players and stuff but actually now it's very different now there aren't any tweaks it's all obviously what mates you prefer to spend time with you know they're always a few weird fish that you want to avoid I was easy man I don't have any you know hangups I used to whined Academy players up pretend I didn't know their names and give them [ __ ] and stuff but I you know I would I was never too big so I'd sit there with anyone anytime on any table I never planned it and I loved it and I was I never charge you bigger than anyone that's going to be you seem like a larger than life character James I'm just look like a cut your career here you wait you then move from stiletto understand francais then you move then I went to Japan and then you went to New Zealand how did all these trying to make noodles come about so with wasps basically I spent two years trying to go she ate a contract with them they basically back in the day used to underpay everybody and because used to win trophies that's how they kept you that they paid some of their big timers like Lawrence but they told everyone else you if you want to be winning stuff and come here so people used to take that money to come to wash to win Josh you know infrastructure business was pretty terrible off the field so they were trying to mug me off I was painting there was the lowest-paid England player a long way and you tried to get the situation they tried to play hardball within a new owner came in and basically often it sealed envelopes with offers non-negotiable no no agents fees nothing so I was like yes thank so much that it was like way less than it taken two years to get to so I am basically when I talk to other teams I've got an opportunity to speak the staffer and say you know I was like eh what team be how much they actually pay what your market value is and see what opportunity to live in the heart of Paris playing for one of the best teams that plays five games to see if he's gonna stab de France with one of the most flamboyant owners team the game with Sergio Parisse say Dmitri says excuse you name that we you know to name a few it was it was an opportunity I couldn't change and everyone was like you shouldn't leave wash you're never gonna make it they're never gonna amount to anything nobody leaves whilst people told me I was money-grubbing I was [ __ ] everything else and I went there and I never miss it England game and I had the timer life and I wanted to stay there longer but they were real financial financial trouble by the end of it and they let five or six of us go so I wanted to them go and explore super 15 there was absolutely no money in super 15 so that's where you go to Japan because the season start differently so I got an opportunity to go to Japan and you know we saw for the World Cup what country is Tokyo is the best city in the world it was a nap so I don't have a place and I absolutely loved it I couldn't get enough of it yeah you're only there for a year and then you moved to New Zealand for a year with my left I left Japan or Wednesday trained on a Thursday did a team on a Friday it played on a Saturday for the Highlanders came off the bench and then there where does it prepare a living New Zealand where a Tokyo now I mean all it's very different I think most of these places were you know so unique like Japan culturally incredible you know obviously very different than France you know all the way to Europe a Yank languages based on Latin you will find to where in the words in Japan if you get lost in Japan so we lost now I was whizzing around a subway for about six hours as a everyone I asked everyone was asking they go like no sorry can't talk to you and you like that and some luckily I saw some white guys you know foreigner that called and they showed me out and I managed to escape and then we know New Zealand was that was a rugby Heartland New Zealand was a place where everybody talks about rugby everybody thinks about rugby through and all back is the greatest thing rugby in UK is the 3rd 30s ball you know everyone wants to be a reality TV star or a or a football over in the UK in New Zealand you know if you play football there's something wrong with you people want to be mobile players everyone wants to be an all-black and I wanted to go there and see test my skills see what I could I could survive and I got to play under one of the best coaches I've ever worked with Jamie Joseph I lived right by the sea we traveled all around the place and absolutely loved it and I wanted to stay and play longer but unfortunately I only signed with wasps and obviously I mean I luckily went back to us and we know we went on a quite a big journey even though we had real difficulties nightmarish situations were not being paid and you know the clubs could have fold at any moment and then Richmond came in to save the day in there and things fell apart towards the end and I finished off in Northampton where you know I wanted to finish a wash they didn't offer me a contract one interest in having me so I went to North Hampton and open welcome up I know open arms a lot the fans were mixed they you know they thought I was being paid lot money I wasn't I was on the same amount of money I was on was about 21 and you know they didn't really like me a lot of them but actually hopefully I won them over oh you've got to play five games before fortunately my body gave up in that respect yeah well you came home basically yeah I mean well actually I was born in wings and so on I know never been anywhere near in the Midlands I did this hat I'm only here because what's moved up from High Wycombe to commentary now I'm I'm here but I actually ended up moving around there you know around the corner five years ago it's the same house I'm north and I'm still there now I'm obviously looking to to move at some point because everything I do is now in in London I was commuting four hours a day with the MMA stuff which was killing me yeah sorry you know just want to ask Jane support we asked Tommy bow who his there or who the best player was he ever played with so we wonder who's the best player James Haskell has ever played and then who the best player you've ever played against I'd say Jason Robinson and I would say either Brian O'Driscoll or someone like Joe Rock Ithaca a family's always putting the backs they're mostly too hard to catch yeah very much so they mean listen there's Scott Brits had some footwork like a back but most most don't you know yeah what about the greatest captain you played on me I think it's tied between Lawrence and Ally with Dylan Hartley I think both were brilliant in very different ways yeah controversial but fair we'll give it to you play with them so we're on my own decision that's very kind of you oh we chose over here you know okay James just where you wrapped the Ruby up what was your Paris moment as well your whole playing career mm-hmm I think when the Grand Slam you know it's so hard to do we'd failed three other times fourth time lucky you know to get an opportunity and to do it and to not be taken away and being criticized so heavily and be told that me and Chris Rock short one you know six or seven and all this crap that went with it was great to win in and have that you know be bonding and never ever have it take it away for you that's great that's great no no you there you saw the better the tour and it looks like you're gonna be on the fifth make ours the things fifth may with James Gallaher ahead on 16 sorry Osteen standard but I probably won't go ahead if we're being brutally honest and do you think that could be a blessing the score is that you get more arrows under your belt training and then we'll see a better version James Hospital show up when you do make about Tour debut yeah I hope so it's just what we see depending on how this goes because I can't train with anyone so tart it's very difficult you know I was I was getting some real sustained training I was in five six days a week who fires now it's heavy sparring I was doing everything we're about to have our first kind of guest spa come in and you know amazing I'm doing quite a lot of stuff that I was getting on but but the injury was that was a real issue that came about which kind of put a spanner in the works I mean it's not you know I don't really know and I'm told him about it essentially so you know you guys know a bit of pressure on things but then this whole quarantine things come about and I don't know you know I just it's a very weird situation to be in so that's the way and see what happens yeah James sorry for asking could you move a bit closer to the mic as well I'm sorry no no that's okay James yeah I understand where you're coming from there and because of when everyone's everything's going on we don't know when you're actually going to make a debut well how'd you actually start getting into M&A because a lot of people were very interested about that oh I always basically work with London shoe buyers I've known the guy since I was 17 I used to go and see Paul islands to do wrestling and tackle technique stuff so we were practice tackling practice running the pipe double a takedowns all that kind of stuff you know things like you know wrestling how to get out of tight things how to use your body how to use levers etc I would often do a bit of extra boxing and I was probably doing that you know I once a week for a period of time as I got older and I was unable to come sustain doing loads of extra stuff outside training when I got asked about the MMA stuff through from David Green it's obviously well documented I thought they were asking we do some commentary stuff and they offered me to fight I first people I taught I called up well shoot fighters and said listen you know I'm not being stupid what do you think it is could you coach me if you guys agreed and I'll do it they were like yeah absolutely and I basically never never look back you know I've done a bit to get so I did a lot of jujitsu when I was in in New Zealand but you know again all this stuff you can do it for you know two or three years and still be nowhere down the path so I you know I think when I finished all this fighting and all the rest I'm definitely carry the jujitsu part of it I really joy I think it's I think it's very special and a fuse of great a great sport yeah well I think it's been heavyweight you can go on for much longer like it says here now you're 24 so correct yeah yeah so you're definitely a couple ago at least a couple years did like we put your name on the map when fella for next you're coming on we we were totally shocked that you're you were going up you're awesome yeah it was it was it was incredible to see but I was like if anyone was gonna do like a crossover athlete like yourself could that be it I feel I had weights you know I mean your athletic prowess can actually you know push the gap a lot sooner in terms of skill wise cause you see some heavyweights like you don't want trouble anyone with a boss sport like if you look right now so you don't got the scream a thief as opposed to my James Haskell takes a top architect right well I think you know you looks like a bit of a physical specimen to start off yes but I mean as we all know you know I don't you know the thing is when you go to shoot fires you know everyone can fill me in there including the seven year old cleaning doesn't really doesn't equate to anything and you know fighting is you know it's a completely different mindset to anything else you know it's the hardest thing I've ever done emotionally it's very hard to physically peak you know every day and rugby you peak you know once a week or twice a week here you know you're having to go in there punch your teammates in the face they'll punch you in the face and you got to go again and keep turning up and doing that and you know there's always that overthinking that slight bit of fear in your belly it's a really interesting experience you know and I think that my ambitions are to get that first fight and to do that and to fight you know and the rest of it we will see you know I've made no promises about anything that I want to achieve you know it's a hard-ass in my body I played in a very very traditional position as a back row player and international level from 21 to 34 essentially and you know it's a very hard thing MMA is the hardest sport you know the skill required the different levels of different techniques the different abilities the toll it takes your body is is second to none really and I walk out in a place as you saw my wife's photo unable to walk talk and then after waking up next day and go again and you know and as Paul at to fight old me you know they ran out of cotton ball a long time ago down there so you know nobody's getting their preferential treatment yeah I don't even want out anyway second I don't even want the preferential treatment anyway no no of course I wouldn't nobody wouldn't I just I just mean you know it's one of those things I've known these guys but you can't mean you know how are your backs all your arms are so mile can't straighten my arms next doing the like yeah okay let's go and train you like it's quite humbling Pingree because they're all doing some Nobby jujitsu possible and when you have someone who's like thirty kilos lawyer then you turned me into an awesome pretzel you're just like all right so like 'i'm a skill actually quite vulnerable to be honest was that like a bit of a bitter pill to swallow for you or we aware that when you were going into it I was aware that I learned early on when I was twenty and me and my mate best mate Paul Jones went down to London shooting fires when it was under the arches and we went there just wrestling Alexis said right I wanted to go in this cage restless guy he's about 50 kgs and I was I was something like 110 daughter was about 118 and when tried his rest there was no punching no thing just try and get him down so I went to go down grab doom he took my back Palmer on the floors okay when I go again he did a single leg shoot on me and tackle beat the floor and I didn't get handed him and he was like 50 kgs embarrassing so sent my mate das are in the bloke singly underneath in picked up above his head and just stuff them into the side of the cage and Alexis came in is that right guys if that doesn't show you the technique wins over oversized any day of the week so for that moment on when any little bloke really really bumps into me I'm always the first say sorry apologize no ego I didn't have any illusions that I couldn't get folded up very very quickly in you know in them and I just look at you know look at Paul where Paul's my size and he's incredibly dangerous with coach alexis is probably one of the most dangerous people I've ever ever met in terms of his fighting ability and his temperament and how he is like I reckon if he wanted to fight me I think I probably just lay on the floor and just apologize what's like spying Michael venom page okay they did not let me anywhere so they do not let him anywhere near me you know he a I mean I asked was thought you know joking there so I obviously don't want to do this what would happen if I tried to fight against you weren't sure don't you lay a hand on him and also you'd the problem is that you'd walk into his punches so you go to sets throw something just walk straight into one of his one of those punches like he does you know you saw the way this last fight with a guy teed up he just goes war boom ah yeah they don't let me anywhere near it so we do I wrestle with him we do jujitsu together no sparring me he is he does stuff that I might as well when I saw it I was like I probably just retire now before I mean before it's just no point but then I realized he's not not in any way in my division I don't have to fight anyone do anything like that it's unbelievable he's unbelievable must-see TV we previously had him on the show as well I think I mentioned earlier poor they're like extremely humble and he's great at that he's great guy really humble really lovely all the guys at Schrute pies are to be honest with you you know Norbert you know Michael Shipman Felix flex hammer you know Jared you know all these guys are farad all these blokes are really really good you know Carlos you know he gives him his time Aaron as all these guys are really kind and deadly but kind and James John name for your bones yet not yet no I'm sure you probably are loads of people call me up on Twitter and Sophia oh I've been caught up we caught about by 10 old rugby players you know some South African rugby players and loads of people others ignore it I just don't really allowed it it's like there's no point I don't know enough about who I'm fighting you know everybody talks with big game and the psychological battle in fighting is so is so important you know the guy could look a million dollars and be an absolute Fanny so it's best not just good to ever look into it and James is your is your skill more so on the ground been on the feet or where do you think you're at your best well look we never shoot fire you're covering everything off I wouldn't say look I don't think I've been doing it long enough to say where I'm best at I think okay where you least worst least my feet and stuff I think you know there's always you know I think with transition periods is probably where it you know is the most difficult area you know when you're moving something trying to get out something not exposing yourself to a guillotine or whatever it might be you know an ankle lock or a leg lock those those things that I find difficult being on my feet takedowns you know dealing with stuff on on the floor within reason I'm okay you know getting trapped that getting getting caught in a crucifix by by Carlos and you know it's probably not a place you want to be and I've ended up being there luckily couldn't elbow otherwise right well done for your own else really keep the miles from the crucifix so don't for him that's my advise to you ever you know people going way it filled it look if Bella tall want to stick me in with with Bader and watch we get absolutely filled in or Cheick Kongo it's not gonna great great career move because I can honestly tell you they are gonna beat me I'll give it my best shot it kicked in the head and fold up it doesn't really serve anyone any purpose so hopefully it'll be a process where you know as we move up we fight people of my level etc would your yeah would your anti wrestling be like quite high because of your background and will be as well or the ability to sprawl and things like that yeah I'm used to that that kind of stuff that comes kind of relatively naturally to me you know again you know they obviously threw me the deep end shoot buys to make sure I wasn't a [ __ ] could take a punch and you know wasn't you know everything else so that's all I've come out of it okay sounds like a mind game getting here and you know I don't mind a scrap oh like the big sort of moody fight for you maybe in two or three for two or three four times baby yeah Jack Swagger or Jack Haye or or Aries called no honey did you eat yes yeah yeah because I think that's sort of like both have big crossover a star like I think that one could be a big one well I think if you go to America people why not really know who you are if he comes over here I don't know if people will know who he is I know he's like a big name in my dress so we W fans are definite is there a lot of you we found the okay I'm not a massive fan of WWE by my teammates Alex Corvis arrow or you just play with absolutely loved it it lives and breathes at you everything about it I mean someone said I should cross over to that next become a WWE wrestler yeah thank you moment am unemployed cash is king WrestleMania is coming off soon so resumes I'm just opening I've got the acrobatics though ain't back flipping off a top rail combat flip you know I'm one of the people I've feedback back flips into a pool or runs in it just falls into it you could be like someone's enforcer I'll be sorry you know actually have to do too much I cannot be someone up and hit someone with share I don't care yeah you gonna have a nickname going in like James the rascal or ask oh no crap nicknames lads no nothing I'm just gonna go in his James Haskell that's all we need yeah I'm sure you're gonna have a loyalty put you in with this actually go down like I don't know what the situation is now London do you think they're gonna reschedule from London and put put your debuted until then or do you think you could enter my having I have no correspondence I have no idea I'm just I'm just waiting to see what stories really I think I think there's a few showers before that I think they're there look Matt I think there's one or two April shells that they have to decide whether to move them or not and just on your debut general walking it's on picked oh yeah I was thinking about that the other day actually because somebody asked me I hadn't thought of it yeah probably yeah one of your own tunes a DJ remix I wish I wish no no no might be rhythm of the dance or so but whatever whenever yeah these are the things apart the circus that you don't worry about more about do me one favor and make sure not to do think Deontay Wilder didn't wear like a 30-pound yeah yeah I mean I was already taking notes if I get banged out that was being my excuse oh I'm gonna you know rhetoric yeah my legs my legs were shot perfect excuse thank you yeah Russell yoga anything else the same for you wrap it all no James times minute for caught on and you were are king of the jungle and we were actually very very excited for you to debut in Bellator Congrats on the success of the podcast and hopefully that keeps on going cheers that stay energized and things have me on stay actually fuse a show for us Legends yeah make sure to check out James and when he makes his debut and make sure to LIKE subscribe and as always stay energized
