Post-fight interview with Saffron Welby after Artemis Fight Night 1, where her bout went to a decision she was happy with. She describes improving by listening to her corners, trusting them despite crowd noise and partial hearing from event music, and managing late-round nerves in the final seconds. She speaks about what it meant to be on the promotion’s first all-women’s combat sports card, the atmosphere Mel created, and wanting more visibility for women on mixed cards. She outlines her fighting style—movement on her toes, back-foot work, and a signature axe kick—and reflects on pacing and power against Fiona, an opponent she has fought several times before. Looking ahead, she says she has another contracted fight the following week, hopes for more ring shows in November, and wants more international trips after fighting at the WKO World Championships in England in August. She closes by thanking coaches Aaron Reilly, Darren, and Niko, her teammates and sparring partners, and encouraging young female athletes to balance sport with life and compete without fear.

Go back. Let's go >> Artemis. Quite night. I have here Miss Saffron Welby. >> Yeah. >> Congratulations. >> Thank you. Thanks so much. >> How do you feel? How do you feel after that? We went to a decision and then obviously you're happy with the decision but like uh you know how do you feel about your overall performance? >> I feel like I done pretty well. Like I'm walking more and listening to my coaches and believing in myself and actually throwing it like what they're telling me like actually thrown it like other than that I feel like I done pretty well. >> Obviously towards the end I started kind of you know getting you know all into myself then at the end cuz I got real like kind of worried. you know, last 10 seconds you just stress. Okay. >> You're like, I can't wait for this to be over to his hand get raised, you know. >> Yeah. Know, it's very important to have um corners that you can trust. >> Yeah. >> And then what I think a lot of people up and coming, >> they really need to learn to take heat at what their corners are saying. >> 100%. >> Because if they do that, then, you know, I think they're at a significant advantage. >> They're they're literally your second pair of eyes. You know, you're there. You're the one in the ring. You can They can see everything around you, you know, and I just need to believe in me to throw them. I can hear what they're saying, but I need to actually throw, you know, the combinations. >> Right on. Right on. Um, do you find it difficult to hear your uh corners in there? Yeah. >> No, I I'm kind of, you know, partial hearing now from all the music, but um, no, like I I always say to him before, if I just scream like I can't hear and just shout at me, I'll be able to hear you. >> Shout it out. Yeah. >> Yeah. Exactly. >> Right on. Uh, do you find that strategy works for you? Yeah, >> 100%. Obviously, I can hear them more clearer. >> Okay. Um, so talk about this uh event tonight, Artemis. Um, it's the first all women's combat sports card. >> Yeah. >> You know, what what's it like being, you know, a part of that? >> I feel like I'm so like honored to be on this show. Like Mel has put together such an amazing show. Honestly, like the work she put into this like goes unnoticed. Like honestly, like the show is so well ran, you know, all the little effects like the little smoke machine, the lights and everything. Even all the people that are here, you know, there's such a good atmosphere and crowds and it just really like, you know, makes it, you know, and it it puts you into a good mood as well before you fight and kind of calms your nerves. >> Absolutely. Yeah. Especially for a for a first time promotion. Um, >> it's going pretty smoothly. There's a bit of a delay in start, but everything else um it's it's it's running very smoothly. >> Once it's up and running, it kind of like flows then, you know. >> Yeah. Well, not not always. I've been to shows before where it's like a train wreck the whole way. >> Oh, tell me about it. Starts at 6:00, you know, starts at 6:00 and then, you know, starts at 7. You wait around all night. I hate that. >> Yeah. Know that's a bummer, too. Um especially if you have like pro fighters on the card. Yeah. >> And uh they're sitting around waiting like that. Yeah. It's not always the greatest, but um Okay. So, like kind of coming into this, did you have any, you know, kind of like thoughts or, you know, like expectations on, you know, what tonight would hold for you? >> I like I was kind of like hoping that like getting onto this card, showing my face again, like it's all experience at the end of the day. I want to get more noticed and stuff and show that like female in sports like we're honestly we have so much more than people think you know cuz obviously we're on cards with like you know a load of boys maybe two three four fights of girls >> but we kind of get overlooked in a way because there's obviously the men on the card that are better you know like stuff like that but we don't get as noticed and I like this one cuz everyone's more inclusive we're all girls we can all show what we have and the skill we have because we all have that in us >> but we just don't have the opportunity to show it and I just felt like this show really gave me the opportunity to show everyone like my skill, my, you know, my power, everything like, you know, and the way I fight, my style, you know. >> How what how would you define your style? >> I feel like I'm very on my toes, you know. I like that. I like kind of movement. I like kind of springing in. And then as well, I like to walk on the back foot. >> Okay. >> So, I feel like obviously like certain shows, you'll obviously have to adapt your style. Well, it depends who you're fighting and stuff, but I feel like that I'm a very like, you know, skillful fighter as well, you know? I like having like, you know, my little axe kick, you know, stuff like that. Like I love all them, >> right? Is is there kind of like a like a signature move? Something that you always you have to throw or you have to do it. >> Me axe kick. >> Yeah. >> It just even if it doesn't land, it's just throwing. At least it's there, you know? I have to. >> It's just if I have that in my inventory, I might as well throw it, you know? I have the confidence to throw it. I have the flexibility to throw it, you know. >> Is there anything to surprise you tonight? Um, I mean obviously like like obviously cuz me and Fiona fought like a few times, you know what I mean? Like she's a strong fighter and now she's like >> I kind of surprised myself like I paced myself, you know what I mean? And like I seen that when I threw me like, you know, back leg kick, you know, I was getting that power and I was generating that power and it could hurt her in a way. But you know what I mean? At least I was getting that kind of power instead of a tip. Like I can I surprise myself from how confident I can throw my punches now as well because I I'm more legs than more legs than punches, you know. >> Right on. Right on. Um so like what's what's the future hold for you? What what are your plans? What what are you looking at in the next year? >> Well, next week I have another fight, >> another one in contract. >> Very active this year. >> Yeah, I have to I love this. This is my life, you know. I like this keeping active and stuff and hopefully in November I can get a couple more ring shows as well. Um cuz I'm still young at the end of the day. I want to get this experience in. And I feel like when you kind of do it at a young age, you kind of build yourself up there and you learn how to deal with the ners. You learn how to deal with the crowd, you know, you learn how to deal with them judges that, you know, would side with others, you know, and it's all experience at the end of the day. >> But even in the next year, I'd like to maybe travel more internationally as well with fights like, >> okay, >> in August, I traveled to um England >> to fight in the WKO World Championships and like the atmosphere over there is unbelievable. like I just need to experience that again, you know, like I'm just craving that experience, just traveling again for the sport that I love. >> Awesome. Awesome. Uh, you know, what what do you want to being the woman you are and the the younger girls, younger athletes, you know, before you? Um, like what is it that you want them to take away from you? Like, uh, you know, what is it that you want them to learn from you? I feel like that the younger kids like you know obviously they'll look up to people that are maybe a few years old or maybe you know a couple of years older but I feel like since we're all girls at the end of the day like you're still allowed to have that like feminine side of you know you can you still go out and enjoy yourself but balance is key you know what I mean like I still like I'm living life you know I'm doing co like I'm in college now I still have fun with my friends but I'm still focused on training you know I feel like they shouldn't dedicate their whole life to one thing. Do you know what I mean? Like balance it out. You know, you you're young and still have fun, you know? And I feel like that, >> you know, just because you're in a sport that's male dominant, like don't be afraid. Have no fear behind them eyes, you know? Just go for it. Doesn't matter how old you are. Just throw yourself into the deep end. >> Right on. All right. Look, uh, you want to shout anyone out or >> shout shout out to Aron O'Reilly, for me, coach. Listening to him the whole night. Where's he gone? >> Should be somewhere somewhere. Where is Aron O'Reilly? >> He's gone home. >> No, there's no way. Some coach is after you have your dad here. >> No, all my coaches Darren, Niko, Aaron, you know, like just they put so much hard work and effort into the club and like it goes unnoticed honestly. like we're so like cuz we moved into a new premises and everything and then we had to kind of adapt everything and you know get the place all new and done up and stuff like they put in so much hard work and honestly like even the people that I you know spar and stuff like I appreciate all my like you know my um oh what's the words >> teammates >> all my teammates I appreciate them all different spars I can get from different clubs like it's all just building me up for you know me next fight >> again all right look Um, I don't want to keep you too much longer here. Um, I appreciate your time and then until next time. Okay. >> Yeah. >> All right. And there will definitely be a next time, I'm sure. >> 100%. >> All right. Heck yeah. >> You sick of me face. >> Right on. All right. See you. Have a good one. >> Thank you. [Music] >> Oo. [Music]
