Fansview Combat Sports interviews Steven Barrett during fight week ahead of a bout on the Wrath Combat Champions 5 in Cork. Barrett says he does not cut weight, so fight week feels like a normal training week aside from dialing intensity down before Saturday. He describes a high-level gym atmosphere under coaches Dylan, Kieran, and Carl, trains two to three hours daily, and hates missing class. He has watched his upcoming opponent’s tape and notes they share past opponents Callum, Levy, and Aaron Long, but plans to impose his own game either way. Barrett praises RA as a second home and supports introducing novice title belts in Ireland, citing UK youth examples and Max Mahaffy’s Akuma novice-belt fight as inspiration. He confirms Max Mahaffy is not on this card and is booked on Chaos at Bantamweight instead. Barrett’s only sponsor so far is FightScope TV and he asks for more sponsorship, especially around Cork.

Okay. So, it's my absolute pleasure to have with me, Mr. Steven Barrett. He's someone who I really really like and he's someone who really likes my page. I want to say I want to thank you very much for the support you do give me. You're you're one of of the many fighters who do, but you're one of the people I've noticed that I had the pleasure of talking to in Cork. We had just a little small interview in the corridor. I've watched a lot of your fights. You're someone I'm really really high on and obviously you've been on RA. I've commentated on your fights and I'm looking forward again and you've got a really really good test ahead of you. So, I want to thank you very much for your time. How are you feeling? How is fight week for you? What does how's how do you feel? What does fight week look like for you? >> First of all, I just want to say thanks for having me, man. Pleasure to be on. But fight week fight week's nice, you know? I don't cut any weight. So, fight week's just like any other week. Train, dial it down a bit near the end and have fun. Can't wait to fight. I'm ready. Ready to go, man. >> And just one question because obviously you like obviously we talk and I know you want to fight, you constantly you want to go all the time. [snorts] How hard is it to go from obviously in training camp you're going hard hard hard hard hard hard hard hard hard hard hard hard hard hard hard hard hard hard hard hard hard hard hard and then fight week obviously you taper down obviously you've got no weight cut as well so you don't have that as a distraction how hard is it going to go from 100 to to kind of zero is it something that you've managed over time is it something you still struggle with what's that kind of process like going full force to kind of chilling out you know I don't like it I like to train hard I like to keep going but you know if you try if you keep going up and Thursday Friday, Saturday, you're just going to burn out and then the fight. So, you know, you need you need to just take that little bit off and that's what my body needs. So, I've learned to, you know, just calm down before fight week. >> Yeah, I'd say it's hard to do like to to calm it down, but obviously you're in a good gym uh with good coaches. Obviously, I know your coach like very very well. I went to the Vakia with him as well. Talk to us about the gym atmosphere. What's the gym like at the minute and what does h the gym Dylan Kieran and all the other coaches mean to you as coaches and kind of mentors? >> The gym the atmosphere in the gym is so good. Every class I go to every fighter class I feel like I'm improving 10fold every time. Just the amount of bodies on the mat is just so it's just such a high level. And Dylan's such a good coach. I'll be going up to training with him becoming down trainers. I'll be talking to him all the time. He's such an inspiration for me just in the gym and just really good to have him as a coach. And Kieran, he does the tie. I don't do the tie as much compared to the MA, but I still go in there still. He's still a good coach to have. And then you got Carl for the jiu-jitsu just just bullies me every time on the map, man. 140 kg black belt. I love Carl. He's he's such a nice guy. And Kier and I went down there obviously with Ron to do the thing for MAGA that time. Um but uh with obviously with Dylan I would say because I know one thing coaches say is and I I'm assuming you're this type uh me and someone spoke about this earlier today actually that like people who want to learn and want to are you one of those people who constantly want to learn and constantly and I would assume that Dylan takes that quite well and that because that would mean a lot to a coach. Are you someone who's constantly in his ear? not annoying, but always looking to learn, always looking to push forward. And And what gave you that kind of a mindset? >> 100%. If I miss a class, I'm just I'm pissed for the whole day. I have to be in the gym every day. It's two, three hours at a time. There's nothing I'd rather be than just be learning, whether it's striking, grappling, jiujitsu, whatever. It's just, it's just so good in my mind to just learn and keep going. And I love asking questions as well. You know, if you don't know something, you have to he Dylan probably will know it cuz he's such a high level coach. So, ask the questions and he'll have the answer. >> Yeah. No, 100%. Cuz that's what there's no such thing as a stupid question. And I think people do be like, "Joe, I don't want to ask this. I don't want to ask that." Best thing to do is just if you don't know something, ask it. And [snorts] then Dylan's a type if he doesn't know, Dylan will say, "I'll find out for you." He won't fill you full of But you've obviously got a really tough test this weekend. is a fight that's really really good. I I find like you guys at North's level are so so high level nowadays. But talk to us about your opponent. [clears throat] Is this Have you looked into him? When you study when you a match, do you study the opponents or do you leave that to Dylan or do you want to kind of just let them do it and then you implement your own style as a fighter rather than worrying about what he's going to do? >> I have a look I've had a look at his fights. We've we fought two similar opponents. We both fought Callum and Levy, but we fought Aaron Long as well. So, I had a look at them fights, but I'm going to impose my game plan. I'm going to make him fight my fight. Whether he wants to strike or wrestle up to him, I'm going to do what I'm going to do and I'm going to force him to just react to what I'm going to do instead. >> And obviously, it's going to be great to have you back at the show. H you've obviously got onto me and a couple of other teammates because we've always had you boys up. How do you feel about the show? How do you feel? And this is like feedback for us as well. So to see how is there anything we can improve because you've always gone like as soon as the date change you're like I'll see if I can make that. So you were like I'm making a date and you've been very complimentary about it. How do you feel about the show and fighting on show and how's your experience been so far and you don't have to sugarcoat it just because you're speaking to me either. >> No I say it David I love the show. It's like my second home. Ever whenever I see a date I'm like I want to get on that show. The dressing rooms the the people are so nice. It's just the experience is it's so good, man. It's just I can't even put it into words. I love fighting on Rap. >> Yeah, I that's I seen we were hoping you were hoping that there would be some sort of novice belt. Unfortunately, because >> one day, man, one day >> one day. I think the only novice I've ever seen I think Max Mafy I know obviously the national MMA he's doing one I think Akuma done one for Max Mafy, didn't they? >> I've seen that. Yeah, that's my inspiration. >> That that was the only one. And look, he's he's obviously he's he's actually not on the card. He's going to be fighting on Chaos at Bantamweight. But I think it is something it is something that could potentially come in in the future because I think [clears throat and snorts] I know fighters like don't want to stay in novice too long. And I know if you could fight amateur now, you would. I I just know that. But I think it gives them something to work towards as well. If there is a bell because a lot of people say, "Oh, amateur belts don't mean much." But it doesn't mean much until you get it and you make it mean much. Is is that something you would like to see implemented? not just on a show like rap but maybe across the country some sort of a a novice title to to give them something to work towards and then so it might be the final thing okay well I've beaten kind of everyone I've got this belt we can move on to amateur >> I think it would be great they do it a lot over in the UK in England you see all these like 13 14 15 year olds they all have the belt on the line so I think they should just do more here it's a great it would be a great achievement whether like you're not just fighting to a fight like you're fighting for a goal [snorts] >> yeah and then like that you'll have a nice shiny bet. Look, that's something we will look into, especially with having to bring the show forward. Uh we couldn't even because we were going to try and get more title fights, but it was too short of a space to get them made and and the cost of it and all as well. But look, it's going to be I I'm really looking forward to see you fight again in person and commentating on your fight. I want to thank you very much for the support you've given me. I got to let you go. Is there anything you want to say before you go or anyone want to shout out? And I really appreciate your time and your patience with me today. One last thing is if you are ever making that novice belt for me. I'm having that fight. I just want to thank Fight Scope TV. They've done a lot for me. They're making everything. They're my one sponsor so far. Anyone else want to sponsor me? Please hit me up. Get on to me. I wouldn't mind it. I just want to say thank you so much for having me, man. It's been a pleasure. >> Yeah. No, it's been national pleasure. know like and if there is guys out there in the cork area that do want to sponsor him he's like really good a really nice polite very well-mannered person and then obviously what you're doing as well it costs a lot of people don't realize how much it costs even to be a novice fighter you have to pay for everything you don't get paid your training your food your nutrition like everything has to be on point so if there is any sponsors out there in the Cork area or above because he will be on interviews with me and he'll be on shows like Rat he's looking to get on other shows in Belfast Cork uh uh and what what other shows around the country. So you will get exposure. But look, thank you very much, Stephen. I will see you on Saturday and uh thank you very much for your time. >> Thank you so much. Going to put on a show Saturday night.
