Energized's "The Face Off" previews the Cage Conflict 8 - Unprecedented welterweight title fight between champion Jess Paulo and challenger Blain McGill on 15 October 2022. Jess says he welcomed the matchup after beating Cameron Clements, respects Blaine as a tough striker who comes to fight, and is excited rather than fearful of Blaine's knockout power. Blaine says he is buzzing for the belt shot, views Jess as the obstacle in his path, and credits Liam Shannon for booking him against Jess the night Jess won the title. Both describe themselves as still early in MMA: Jess is not rushing to turn pro and ideally wants around 20 amateur wins first; Blaine has never gone to a decision and targets turning pro in about a year and a half to two years once he gets consistent three-round experience, while his business partner Jordan O'Neill has already gone pro. Jess trains in Dundalk despite living in Navan; Blaine expects a busload of Belfast support including Matthew Friel. Jess predicts the fight may finish on the ground given his grappling comfort; Blaine says few have seen his ground game but he and his coach are preparing for it. The segment ends comically when Blaine's connection drops mid-show.

Kind: captions Language: en Energized show. Up the Irish. Okay, what's going on guys and welcome to a brand new episode of Energized the face-off. Ross, introduce the guest, man. Today, we've got the Cage Conflict Welterweight title fight between Jess Paulo and Blaine McGill. Lads, how are we doing? All good. Good. Good, thanks. Jess, you you are are the champion at the moment. You picked up a win over Cameron Clements last time. What what did you make of uh Blaine McGill being the name put across from you? Uh I like the test. He's a good fighter, you know. He always MMA fights, just K1 fights. Like he's a comes to fight. He comes to fight. He's a tough fighter. And yeah, that's it. Like even watching his last fight against Troy, like despite the size difference and this and that, he You know what I'm saying? He's a scrapper. He's in there to scrap. He's not there to shy away or anything like that. So, yeah. It's just I want to test myself against the best and he's the person they brought forward and of course I'm going to say yeah. No doubt. And then Blaine, what did you make of uh getting the chance to fight Jess? Obviously for a belt, you're you're obviously uh really looking forward to that. Um I'm I'm buzzing. You know every Jess is active. Jess will fight anyone. Do you know what I mean? He's he's very active. Um I'm looking forward to it. If you want to The way I see it, if I want to fight the best, you know. And he's in he's in my way to get that belt. So, I'm looking forward to fighting Jess and train skills. And Jess, obviously Blaine brings massive power to this fight. He's uh finished all his wins. Yeah. Do you uh do you have any fear of that or are you actually like excited for for that aspect of the fight? I'm excited. Like I said, I mean in a fight anyone can get knocked out. Anyone can Anything can happen in the fight, basically, on both ends of it. And yeah, I know exactly what he's capable of. And I'm excited to get in there and test myself against someone with those capabilities. So, yeah. I'm looking forward to it. Like I'm not not shying away from it whatsoever. And and then Blaine, obviously uh some people refer to you as like a mini Jumbo. Uh what's what's what's the story? You you and Jumbo, Jordan O'Neill, you know, both barbers, both knocking people out left, right, and center. Where does that power come from? Um well, I'm five I'm only I'm only 5'8. And I just I'm doing striking all my life, you know. Um I'm just just constantly fighting. So, I don't know where I'm getting that power from. But when I land, it's it's night night. Like when I land, it's it's game over. But Jess, as you said, Jess has fought many boys, strikers, scrappers. He's he's been helping people. But the the man knows what he's at. And uh I'm looking forward to putting my skills against his, you know what I mean? Yeah. Ross, we were just saying off air in the build-up, the Cage Conflict date on the October 15th. That when this fight was announced, it was like, right. These boys are going in there. Both of them are looking to win the Welterweight title. Jess is obviously the champ. But like this is going to be an absolute banger. We have to get the boys on. And that's why you cannot miss Cage Conflict date on the 15th of October, Ross. Yeah, absolutely. It's going to be an absolute sensational card. Uh it's an all pro main card as well. So, I'm I'm sure this is the I know the headliner of the prelims if if they want to call it that. But like I'm super excited about about this one. Uh Jess, what's the main fight on a Cage Conflict card to you? Cuz um this is one of the the best sort of amateur and pro domestic shows that the country has to offer. It means a lot. Like I mean, just you know, a week I was in Bellator watching Kenny make his debut on the big stage. And he was fighting on Cage Conflict as an amateur as a pro as well. But as an amateur, too. And I mean, he I'm pretty sure he held the championship there in the I think it was featherweight division. And like I said, look at where he's ended up now on the big stage. So, if I keep going the way I'm going, you know, fighting on shows like this, getting wins, and putting myself out there, then it just shows the path that I waiting for me in terms of the pro ranks. And yeah, I'm excited. So, I'll just do waiting waiting waiting game now, to be honest. So, can't wait for it. And then obviously Blaine, yeah, shout out to Kenny indeed. Blaine, Cage Conflict is like a second home to you. You fought 80% of your your amateur fights in Cage Conflict. Um what what do you make of this show compared to the ones? Cuz this seems like one of the bigger shows they've put on. Yeah. They're good. They they just as they as I say, they just ram everybody in, get them watch a few slaps, watch a few scraps. It's good atmos The atmosphere is unbelievable. Um but it's Liam Shannon looks after me well. Like as soon as I think Jess, as soon as Jess beat Cameron, I'd say I know you're after the the fight. I text Jess, well done. And Liam Shannon literally texts me that night and was all, you and Jess are up next. And I've like, thank happy days. Do you know what I mean? Liam Shannon's good to me. So, I'm looking to put on a show now. Yeah, big shout out to Shannon, though. He's uh he's one of a kind. Yeah, he is. Yeah. But uh no, the Cage Conflict card it's definitely one of the staples of Irish MMA. And the way they do the pro main card and then the the high-level amateur on the card makes me really really excited for me. It's definitely one one to watch out for. Um Jess, tell us this. Obviously, at this stage of your career, you're you're the champion. How many more fights do you want to have in amateur before you make the jump to the pro ranks? Like I'm not really, you know, Ross, to be honest. Like I still see myself as a novice when it comes to MMA. Like I'm still kind of finding out different bits and bobs about myself. So, like I'm not really in a rush. Ideally in my head, I had it I kind of like if I want to hit like something like 20 wins in the amateur ranks before I kind of started looking to, you know, uh thinking about the pro ranks. But like I said, I'm not in a rush. Like I'm still a baby in this game. I still have a lot to learn and a long way to go. So, I'm young enough as well. I'm not in a rush whatsoever. I'm just learning learning. And when I'm ready, I'm ready. That's it. Yeah, absolutely. And then uh obviously Blaine, you're uh your business partner, Jordan's gone pro. Uh when would you see yourself going pro? Sorry, Blaine. As Jess just said, he's a baby in the game. I'm the same. Like I've never went to a decision in my life in MMA. Every every fight I've been on, I've knocked them out or either we tried. Yeah. As he said, we're we're babies in the game, you know. We're only coming up. But I I haven't been to the decision once, you know what I mean? So, once we once I get the the three rounds in constantly, I'd say maybe a year and a half, two years I turn pro. Jor- Jordan's I'm Jordan turned pro now because he's beating everybody. There's literally nobody in this country that fights Jordan now. Like so, Jordan has to turn pro, if you know what I mean? What more of a selling point for a fight is than someone saying, "I've never been the distance?" Oh man, like that Well, that's what the people are tuned in to watch. Like as I said, you can get the link through both lads' Instagrams. If you want to get tickets to actually attend the show, talk to the boys as well. Because like the lads up in the FIA know how to put on an event. There's big names on it. But like this fight is definitely the one people are going to be tuning in and watching now, Ross. Yeah, absolutely. Um Jess, tell tell us what way do you see this fight going? Obviously, Blaine loves to stand and bang. But I've seen you do quite a few grappling competitions lately. Are you going to try and implement some grappling into this one? Like I'm not really going in with a plan. I I think I've kind of shown by now wherever the fight goes, I'm more than comfortable. Like it's really I'm not going in and saying I'm going to strike. I'm going to grapple. It's it's a fight. Like anything can really happen. So, wherever the fight goes, whether it ends up on the feet, on the ground, against the cage, I'm comfy in all aspects. I feel like I've shown that by now. And yeah. I'm comfy with how this fight goes. Love it. Love it. And Blaine, are you looking to keep this on the feet or are you looking to try and show some uh new wrinkles to your game? I'll just let these watch. Jess Jess Jess is very good on the floor. I'm looking forward to it, man. I honestly, it's nobody's seen my MMA. Nobody's seen my ground game. But I'm looking forward to it, you know. I respect Jess a lot with his jiu-jitsu. I know he's well capable of on the ground. So, me and my coach are just working on it. Do you know what I mean? We're working the they just as soon as if if it went to the ground, know what we're at and get back to the fighting do what we we do best, you know. Yeah. And Jess, on October the 15th, are you bringing many people from Dundalk to watch the event? Uh I'm actually not from Dundalk. I'm from Navan. Uh I travel to Dundalk up and back every hour drive each way to train. Uh but yeah, there'll be there'll be a few there'll be a good few people down at the show. Few people down there. All right. And Blaine, what about yourself? Cuz this is almost like you're more the home- hometown hero here in this fight. Uh Belfast is it's been probably the same. Belfast is another another 15 another half an hour. Another half. Will you be bringing many people to the event? Uh I 100%. There's a bus load coming. So, me and Matthew Frills on it, you know. So, we're looking forward to it. There's there's going to be a bus load. Ross, sounds very exciting, man. It definitely does. This is going to be an absolute banger of a fight. You have Jess Paulo stand in MMA. And you have Blaine McGill versus uh combat jiu-jitsu. Like this this is going to be like a massive fight in the Welterweight division. These are two of the most exciting fighters in the country as well. That is something that can't be missed. Uh I'm sure there's tickets available still. Contact Jess to get some tickets. Contact Blaine to get some tickets. If you can't go on the night, make sure to buy the pay-per-view. Support Our Generation MMA. Very, very important. We're after losing Blaine. I don't know where he's gone. So, Jess, I'm going to ask yourself, as the champion, how do you see this fight ending? Like, I don't really make predictions, but if I had to make one for this one, like, it's it's going to be in the in the grappling department, to be honest, cuz like, I know, obviously, he's he's more of a striker. He's been working on his jiu jitsu, definitely, but I feel like there's just some things that you can't How do I describe it? Like, it's just you can learn it, but then you're coming against someone that kind of has it ingrained in them. I don't know how to describe Like, I haven't been at it that long, but like, I've come very, very That's one of where I'm the most comfortable when it comes to fighting, so like, I feel like it's just second nature. Like, when I'm grappling in fights, I don't even need to think about it. Everything is second nature. I'm sure you guys see that yourself. So, if I have to make a prediction, it's going to be somewhere on the ground or something like that, to be honest. There you have it, Buzz. Your winner via Wi-Fi. Yes, now over What else can you say about this? This is what happens. This is what happens when you do shows. Like, I mean, you never know what happens. I think Blaine's Blaine's probably watching now, and it's like, he pulled a runner, so maybe he he mightn't show up, but I'll fight Jess. Well, now, he's he's game, you know. I'm I'm excited to fight him, you know. He's It's he I I haven't fought anyone like him yet, you know. He's kind of just like a knockout artist, pure striker fighter. So, it's going to be it's going to I'm looking forward to it. I'm looking forward to it. That's why I want to test myself against every any and every type of fighter, so yeah. Well, there you have it, Buzz. You never know what's going to go down on the Energy For those watching at home and they're wondering what happened to Blaine, we don't know, but make sure to like, share, subscribe, and as always, stay energized.
