Energized Show hosts Leah McCourt in April 2020 during COVID lockdown. Leah describes adapting training in isolation, enjoying more rest without constant Dublin travel, and a whirlwind year moving from Bellator prelims to becoming the first Irish woman to headline an MMA event. She recounts starting martial arts after her daughter Isabella was born, judo from childhood, Muay Thai and MMA from around 2012–2013, and winning a European amateur title. She explains leaving Cage Warriors because of limited women's opportunities in Ireland and the UK, losing her pro debut then winning her next bout, and signing with Bellator roughly two years later after a text from Jade Samuel and a contract from Judy within an hour. She reflects on Bellator 217, her armbar win, headlining, media pressure, and feeling she has not yet shown her full ability. She discusses a six-fight Bellator deal, a cancelled May London booking, openness to a crowd-free event, admiration for Chris Cyborg, and her close friendship with Molly McCann.

Kind: captions Language: en okay what's going on guys and welcome to a brand new episode of energized today we have a very special guest on the show we have the first Irish woman in history to ever headline an MMA event Lia the curse McCord Leah how are you doing I'm gay please great honey they're young holidays so just like cmcm old I see you're getting a lot of work at the moment tag you're you're doing rounds on rounds how are you fun training isolation and you know the first card you Justin cuz I like Levi seven something so take it a step back the first couple of weeks the hard and I've got a routine I'm really like it's the first time I felt relaxed and so long and there's like no pressure on me and I'm working it's just it's just different so just just have to adapt it over khatma supposed all these situations yes have you fun not travelling all the time back and forth to Dublin as well it's not I I have I don't mind actual traveling it's there might a time it takes up out of my day so like so two yards there in two hours buckets is a long time where I can we cheat other things some find it I have a lot more time which is you know time to rest time to recover time to just chill out and read and you know it's nice it's it's a nice change whirlwind trajectory in the last year from being on the prelims the headline and Bellator told them what am a lot of people like don't actually know have you started and make there's no exactly how you got into well let me try exercise um I started doing MMA after I had my daughter Isabella I always did judo for my child and even even though I like I listen love all martial arts watch and all that impacts what should all that offense I was always very competitive but I was in every sports club in the capital every table in school and I was you know play chess and boxing after head Isabel I started him in surge in Muay Thai and really loved it and then I started doing training in an MMA gym as well because I wanted to do more Thai classes and when the guys kind of hurt this is backing like 2013 2012 and when the guys have heard of my bike ride and I seen how obsessed I do like like the boy tire and strike and I the kind of encouraged reader take it out of my sight and then you went on home om mas European yeah unbelievable so we all see new you are I coulda bought the rest from from the Oz yes do you know I always you know I never felt I always felt that I could find a way to win always how there wasn't the most experience I wasn't the most am knowledgeable but I always and anything maybe you can always find a way to win no matter what your skill set your skill set is I think I had that kind of color instinct at me from the start I hope you find a tribe or where did the come to doorman from the bailiffs so I am I used to treat about fast and whiter professionals I knew yet I think mmm part of what success at M is constantly evaluating constantly we evaluate your trainer in your situation do the easiest thing is to say is to spend simply yes and do the same thing and do look about how I never wanted to think I should have done this to shooter than that and when I knew you might try and I needed a bit of a changeup I had I was like one of the best writing coaches and in the world and I thought you know he's missing - me why not just good oil and I didn't did a class search and whatever diet I just need a I love the level of the his classes and it wasn't just a strike and it was his um his whole knowledge and and and his kind of approach to to fight it and you know some large guns and so he was just so knowledgeable I just thought I can't train anywhere else I have to make a tree and I'm here yeah I don't know like looking back I know I just have always have that kind of Drive that I'll do whatever it takes to be the best version of myself I I just think yeah when I look back it's crazy good act he was like too harsh I never kind of stop and value things when I look back it's pretty crazy but um and then I just I knew you could tell he was a good person he was like I think like people in Excel and I seem to have done since they've been down there yeah your volume attracts your trolley we've seen your point twice now barriers up no it's three times three times three glass revelatory yeah yeah tell us I'm about to work on bed then they weren't having many shows in Ireland and or in the UK they didn't really have my with division I was fairly weird I want I lost my profession every and came back and won my next fight and I was just a better view it and the guys he just made sense to em to kinda part ways because they weren't they weren't you know liberal intent of my pants come to Ireland and they didn't have any use it was like a big expense bringing me anywhere find me opponent in there and country were we weren't sound second so just made complete complete sense to em kinda part ways and it was really strange it was it good like literally to yours we kind of made that decision and I didn't know what was gonna happen what I was going to Jade Samuel text me and he was like you what you've been up to and I was like it's a hat cuz originally whenever I'm Cage Warriors I've got a Simon farmer and I was going between the T and Jude do the last time I spoke to GT was when I told him I wasn't signed in Farmer and he just rather than we texted they didn't even know he was working for Bowser I was like um I've actually just left for caterers and it's like when you look back it is completely and surreal it was two years after I had just had a conversation cage words and a Judy literally sent me a contract for balance or within like an hour and I was like this is so crazy so mentally state was like higher par opening doors and closing doors to pick me on that path and I'll see you've shown your personally in your methods of victory I mean you had a doctor stoppage submission and the last one I'll do one boy decision where would you say your biggest strength is I in the end mayhem do you feel I haven't shown even like 10% of what I'm capable of I feel like my performances I'm not overly impressed with them and I can't wait to Jessica buckin and to show more of me it you know m1 stead of times you have any sense of what you can do and I feel like do obviously professional I have these big opportunities and big stages and I'm just I'm trying to deal with it at the same time do the media that this tree and in everything I have um I feel like it really needs it you think they're starting to click and I'm becoming I need to develop into the fighter I want to be and you know I think probably my m-my kind of knowledge when I'm in there and I know when like my killer instinct that I know when the kind of oh I don't know head of my fight I can and I do love together and mix it up and I just want to kind of improve that and show that I'm a next fight yeah yeah I remember actually like in there in the middle to Bellator 217 like I remember I was there interviewing and Bill up and I was like pellet or could make you like what Ronda Rousey was to USC like I know I'll see you to different people to different backgrounds but I was like did this is ideal of fam and then I remember you're like yeah we'll see what happens and then you fight slavery then head low and doors open and like I remember I was like I actually thought out something like this this big was gonna happen I didn't take that big for like what a roid you've been on they did like three fights in the company yeah yeah that's pretty em to it when he fights with the bathroom for taking that risk that was a risk putting me as some intervention when they believed that I could handle the media oppression and handle everything that went with her comes with being being it that kind of Center focus and guide you in that way I was just excited there and just keep going keep keep getting better yeah well you've got that phone call the headline the card like what we like oh my god screaming and crying Electra screamin and cryin just I'm just thinking of that what I've been three like to get that point it was just crazy and then in the foil itself Aussie yeah you mean Ruiz had an armor and at one stage what were you thinking at that very moment and then like the roar when you came over the armbar as well was incredible like I just was never never felt panics I kind of like slow-mo to worry treant it's so hard you know how to handle those difficult situations and yeah it was exciting the new excitement we were at that event and we're sitting for role but it was one of the longest noise of fights ever of ever being done it was 19 points I was like it felt like I was in that arena delegate three years and I felt the guys in there mean it was just so long I was so exhausted own sense you make way over cross the Rena and I think we all had it over like 19 or so and then you're on for what around 11:00 I can't remember I think we got out of like after 12:00 yeah crazy my yeah always one of the best events of the air every single arm like the fans are not yeah there creates the best no I said so many times never get sick a salad I guess the best atmosphere Lea Ozzy you know I mean you're no one his name's in the featherweight division and obviously the queen of Federer weight division pounders Chris I war she actually had some lovely words say about you when he had the event energy yeah she's always been how does he can match up against her though cuz that's obviously the angle yeah you know obviously I think there's a lot more fights make more sense for her on my career and you think just because you're quick rise to fame and your popularity but you might actually get caught not fight sooner rather than later and I don't know I've said you know six fight date with Bowser actually said he's expecting after my am after that last fight so I know I'm gonna be there for a long time hopefully the rest my career so I know that you know the fight again with this happens to be on that ballot or in London card is welcome in hotels council well there one thing we definitely bring up is there your friendship with Molly McCown we've had Molly on the show and they she's not more great things to say and then when you can fight and you can just see her so I hope and up the crowd almost like this I don't see I don't see she told us a was this friendship happen but I can people checking out this video can you tell me exactly how your mother become almost game best friends and talking on social media bullfighting for kids lawyers and I thought you so make some people don't do it my dad my mom to Belfast I'm like like I don't know and I just find him so funny and we started talking I went over to tree with her and she came over here we just got on so well we both realize and have so much in common and then Paula say we just like soul sisters just like the best friends totally we'll see it's the best bromance in female MMA history systems brilliant anova and turn this you off you were scheduled for you in May in London when this is all said don't you think Harley will be the personnel for next no my loss yeah yeah well hopefully so and I'll see you see you're doing a foil and belt or do their version of the fight island would you be interested in fighting on an island with no crowds hey when you volume that sort of thing that I think a lot of people forget when it comes to this scenario yeah and yeah money from me anybody separating my driver I I always make sure I have other things going on but I'm definitely you know fighting and how the best version of an asset I should be as always my am and as often as I can fight the better your career from the outside like I go see myself do this Joe and we've seen like your trajectory and it's just been like it like for like man I don't I like that like ups on shootings or May it's like your story you can sell brilliant and like I think you right now you're getting everything you actually deserve and explaining the see thank you very much that's a nice only just just before we wrap things up and in the women's featherweight division I'll see I'll has had a snake happened before did you watch much of her growing up and what to be her fair she is yeah oh yeah yeah means she need a really good friends like she did in her corner for her last fight newsroom and wish farm partners I absolutely love she it like I really think she's she's for the realest people and she's such a real fighter like you know when you're you watching it's gonna be uh you know she's she's thinks he's got a good shot at cyber for me yeah it's probably for all over the world she's very whatever yeah yeah and martial arts where's my Helen and really because she deserves it yeah she's always game and she always she always brings a fall all over the world I just took on all comers she's that toes nails yeah absolutely and bar juvenile in there I just want to say thanks man for coming on and and stay safe yeah yeah all the best about yourself stay fit and we look forward to seeing you come out swinging and next for time out okay make sure to LIKE subscribe and as always stay in and stay energized
