Energized "The Face Off" pre-fight sit-down with Shem Rock and Nathan Kelly ahead of the Clan Wars 42 world featherweight title bout on 9 October. Both fighters describe how the matchup came together through managers and the small Irish scene, with Nathan saying his gym wanted him to take the fight and Shem surprised to learn it was the SBG Ireland black belt he had not coordinated with. Shem outlines his Liverpool-to-Dublin path, Dublin Combat Academy camp under Craig Coakley, a nine-second last win, and his usual featherweight camp starting around 77 kg; he says local titles matter less than reaching the UFC. Nathan ranks Shem as his top current opponent after fights with Richie Small and Kieron Clark, credits SBG training with Brian Moore, and insists he will grapple and shoot despite his BJJ reputation. Shem cites past fights against Rocky Lee and Hassan Mandor and expects to win by takedown, control, back takes, and chokes. Both frame the fight as competitive but respectful.

Kind: captions Language: en [Music] energize shower up the irish okay what's going on guys and welcome to a brand new episode of the face off russ introduce the guest man today we have the clan wars 42 world featherweight title fight between the undefeated man from liverpool shamrock and the brazilian jiu jitsu black belt from sgbg ireland nathan kelly lads how are we doing yeah i'm doing a good job jam all good welcome to the show welcome to the show indeed nathan what went through your mind when you first saw shamrock's name not clan wars piece of paper um you know it wasn't really an easy decision obviously for me but i just i thought like me jim just wanted me to go that route so like i'll just trust in the process terrible you know it's a good competition that that's that's that's part of the the thing is that i thought i was trying to get matching understand i was gonna get matched and the name came across and i was like give me a few days and i thought about it and i was like well if shame is down for a while i'm saying football that that was this you more or less i always do like and jim what about yourself how do you feel about seeing nathan kelly's name on that piece of paper i was surprised like my manager might they blanked me he's like lad we've got you to fight and i'm like yeah sweets i'll accept it and then i'm like send the contract through he sent the through it sends me from kelly and i'm like hard it's a common name it'd be a different nathan kelly and two days later i'm like send me that topology let me have a look it was nathan from the gym and i'm like what we didn't win a [ __ ] group together on that and then let me just leave in a few days and see does he bring it up and he never even brought it up so i was just like okay i'll go yeah let's go well i suppose sometimes you know the circle in ireland is very very small and when you're you have two guys who are in the upper echelon of that circle you know i mean sometimes it comes down to it and also you know i mean like cham you're undefeated and you're on two fight win streak you're like you won your last fight in nine seconds you know i mean like when people see that they're not like chomping at the bit to fight those people so it is harder to get a match up and i suppose nathan i'm going to start with yourself do you think you can be the one to put the o in shem's record uh i'd like to think i would yeah like i work harder as it is and i mean and i really do believe in myself i believe in how much i progressed just when i started coming back to mma to nails and i think everything has just fallen into place really for me and with things like that so i don't think i can be anyone on the night because i always wanted to fight you and um i know i'm i'm always there for the win and shame have you ever fought anyone with the bjd have you ever fought someone with the bjj chops and kelly before and do you think that could be a problem for you yeah i've i thought i thought rocky lee he was in the ufc before he was a brown belt in jiu jitsu um for hassan mandor he's a national wrestler i feel like maybe if you match them two styles together that's a bit a bit of nathan this is mma like that i've i've trained the book built so me career i started off doing jiu-jitsu i'm a jujitsu guy and i think people are going to be surprised when the bell goes i'll be the one shooting on him and people think that oh he's a paper belt he shouldn't be shooting i'm a grappler i'm coming here to grapple i like to do in every fight how many fights have i got first round finishes by submission that i'm not scared to grapple if i'm one of them live by the sword die by the sword if you submit to me like that [ __ ] i'll shake his hand and call it a day you know what i mean but that's not happening i hope you don't mean call today by retort obviously covering the sport and the rcma scene like it's great to see two lads here now like at the end of the day just gonna shake hands and move on with things like that's the great thing about the sport and it's the one thing that the mainstream media should actually take more into consideration yeah ross yeah no absolutely basma you're right like these are two absolute gents they've been on our radar for a while and we're delighted to have them on the show and promote these guys at what they do best as well and nathan i'm just going to touch on uh what i ask him for yourself obviously you thought someone the best ireland has to offer richie small and kieron clark and now you'll step in there with shamrock where does he uh list in your top opponents of all time i'll tell you at the minute he's at the top of the list obviously because you know what i mean you're the guy who's in front here is the most important goal you'll ever fight and you know i know he's a good mix match last like i respect that so i know i'm getting myself into so like you know what i mean it's it's it's good for competition you know i mean it's good it's a good 45 growth in all aspects of the years for about receiving the enemies so i'm just looking forward to getting in and competing it's going to be a good one and jim obviously obviously you're not from ireland obviously you're uh you're the game plan nathan q4 this is their shades of mcgregor poorly a3 sham obviously you're a liverpudlian and you came over here but what i'm actually really interested in what is the dublin combat academy added to your game trained under the likes of craig coakley and cuddy man [ __ ] and then i'm doing rounds with craig and he's just [ __ ] he's just playing with me i just felt like first day of jiu jitsu getting rolling with me professor but now it's it's striking that's what i felt like you know what i mean and then i just decided like it was locked down all the gyms were closed i had nowhere else to go and these guys were training every day pushing me every day and i'm fortunate i don't have to wake a job i can just change anything today every single day and that's what i've been doing since i got here lad so i come into this camp sharp in shape i'm i'm going down to east coast doing jiu jitsu i'm [ __ ] i feel good i feel i'm the best version of me i've ever been i even feel like coming into the company weight was a bit lower than it normally would like i'm normally starting camp for 77 kilos and finding that out to make it away like obviously look at me like you can see me [ __ ] face 65 kills me no matter what but i feel for this one i'm going to be the best version of myself on fight night ever and then obviously nathan yourself like you're training spg uh with the likes of brian moore and i think i saw you there where art from there the other day what what's alloy training with those bodies and how do you feel that helps prepare you for this big fight yeah yeah it's like all them lads have experience you know what i mean and you know what what it's like to be in there don't know you can give it a full action i mean it's inspiring them and trying to match their like heels of mine and trying to trying to outsmart them and do the right things and i mean i like that challenge so that pushes me on and just the high level of high level pace it is it's it's good to spare that like and then i'm going to start back with yourself chan but what would winning the clan wars featherweight toil mean to you um i mean to me like is it not it's it's a nice title today for the savior or whatever but like i'm not really one to like dwell too much on one fight like the last right there everyone was like ah right fight like nice knockout and i was like yeah it was a good fight but like i just i'm all right now johnny and that's it i just entered the next thing then so then anytime i do anything let's get it done under the next get it done after the next and that's that's just the way any more inside is whatever wherever we are wherever it is nathan that last boy was actually an assault i seen longer fights at mcdonald's so shem what would winning the clan wars world featherweight title mean to you honestly i'm not really that last i just just like to fight yeah when i wanted to be honest i felt like i didn't get to showcase evan i've been working with colleen craig and then um i feel like i finished fights f fights fast so i don't get to show the evolution of my career fully well lad i i'm i've got bigger goals my goal isn't to be the best in ireland or to be the best in and my goal is to make it to the ufc fight the best guys in the world and perform well there like a local legion show against like small name guys doesn't really do nothing for me like i wanna i wanna be fighting the max holloway's and we'll come by you know takers and the shem what way do you think you're going to finish it off this saturday at clown wars 42 on october the 9th lad i envision everything i envision smoking them in the first exchange i envision going to decision i envision going through adversity in me me coming back lads i see every avenue but the way that i finish fights is taking people down controlling them on the ground taking the back and choking them out like i feel if i take anyone's back it's done uh nate what about yourself or wait i'll give you back nathan this weekend what is it here we go guys thanks a million for coming on uh really looking forward to the fight it's going to be an epic one too having trouble with the misses guys if you have enjoyed this video it's been a while one make sure to like share subscribe and as
