Combat Confidential host Hudson welcomes back a Brazilian Locomotiva Jiu Jitsu gym owner who trains at SBG and is shifting focus from high-level BJJ competition toward MMA. The guest recounts taking a group of everyday students to ADCC the day before the recording: many were first-time competitors, the team won some medals, he competed but lost by heel hook and did not medal, and the club followed with a Brazilian barbecue. He describes opening Locomotiva on 20 March, long days coaching adults and a demanding kids class, and the satisfaction of life-change messages from students—including one in Israel who lost about 18 kilos in three months. He trains BJJ at SBG several times a week while prioritizing coaching over his own rolls, adds Muay Thai and private striking with coaches at his club, and says he can fight amateur MMA at 84 kg though he is about 90 kg now and is unsure what is delaying his debut. Hudson shares his own competition hiatus after becoming a father, weight goals, and advice to newcomers. The episode closes with a plug for Locomotiva in Milltown (14 Milton Road), five free classes, and Instagram locomotiva Jiu Jitsu.

[Music] laughs [Music] I said like on my primary target is like Ireland Ireland yeah like that's where I'm going to focus those are the the people who I'm uh you know I guess most interested in obviously because they're the ones who I can get on my show yeah you know um wait all right check it out we're back you know we're in the we're in the new gigs new studio uh we are restarts yeah okay yeah all right what's up guys that's on here yeah uh we all know Hudson uh he was kind enough to you know help me out yeah it was a couple months ago with the space I think it's uh five months ago yeah yeah um you know and then you know when you offered that to me I was I was very excited because this was still an imagination for me you know it hadn't come to flourishing yet um but yeah so again you know thank you you're always uh you're always welcome on here to talk about anything um and I I again I sincerely appreciate you giving me that spot because um you know I was waiting on doing this you know have having this space ready and you know the hardest part about starting anything is you know getting started so yeah you know when as soon as you said I had that spot I'm like all right you know it's time so you really kind of you really helped me out and I'm forever grateful for that so thank you very much is I just you know so I think people need to help each other you know because I agree yeah definitely I receive lots of help when I came to Ireland you know lots of people helped me a lot and then I tried to keep doing the same thing to another people who need yeah and then I I hope these people have done another one and another one you know so excellent yeah yeah I think this is the the focus you know that we need to do like a ball use no ball you know yeah yeah yeah if I'm ever in the position again uh you know I certainly want to help out other folks as well as much as I can yeah yeah so let's talk about it yesterday was the adcc's yeah and look I still with the my advice is still bad because I was screaming a lot for my students you know so we we are getting a good competitor of steam there you know yeah so common people like uh fathers mothers not properly athletes you know so we are everyday folks yeah yeah so I get my students I just put on the group there on the WhatsApp or group the gym and said I'll compete this tournament somewhere not to go and then lots of people start I want to go and we have a great moment there you know so not like a super professional Jiu Jitsu but we had the experience to know yeah you know for many of them it would have been would have been their first time yeah yeah most of them are the first time we will do competition yeah that's yeah so then they would like that is their first competition the 80cc is competition I told them I thought look it's a high level competition but who cares dude let's get a have a fun and make make problems with another competitors yeah you know so do not let give this easy you know we get a few medals there unfortunately I compete and then I didn't get a medal so but we gotta we have a good moment there now after that we got a Brazilian barbecue at the club yeah join this you know eating together everybody talk and and laughing and good and good moment there you know so I tell you what I'm grateful for this Brazilians here know how to eat yeah and it's always good food you know what I'm telling you like I'm sitting trying to put my kids to sleep and I'm like come on like go to sleep I saw the Instagram stories I wanted to be there yeah the food's always fantastic this uh the best part is because we do not create a schedule uh like wake up at seven go to competition after we go to the club and start by working no the things going to happen you know I think this is the best part of the all this program let's do a barbecue everything yeah let's let's do it and then we we start to do everything like fast go someone go to the shop someone go to the take the barbecue stuff you know yeah the girls go to they do go to do like a rice and this stuff you know we get a good moment yeah everyone just kind of came together it's not just about the who will win or not or the tournaments and there no it's just about to get a good moments together you know that's like the best thing about Jiu Jitsu to me yeah yeah family aspect and I really feel like it it's of any other sports yeah Jiu Jitsu kind of has that family aspect it's like it's ingrained in it you know like I feel like there's a lot of other even team sports where you can kind of you know you have to play together as a team and you know kind of as a family but like off the field or court or whatever like it's maybe it's a bit different whereas uh with Jiu Jitsu it's you know kind of 24 7. yeah you know you're always always that family together and I guess I don't know exactly why that is also I've never played any other sports um so it's um you know outside looking in just my perception of it so yeah totally way off base on that but um yeah no that's one of my favorite things about Jiu Jitsu is that and the family aspect for me I'll be honest for me for one long time in my Jordan Jiu Jitsu the best part for me was just the when we finish and we start to talk yeah yeah what's as important as you know spot ever in Brazil record I don't know how they call it in we call it a hezenia after the training we have you know it's like a meeting yeah but his thing is much more it's like his line you know to say yeah let's let's do everything after the training you know so it's the best part ever you spend 40 minutes one hour training yeah two hours talking about nothing with our friend and and laughing and making the jokes and everything was the best part ever in Jiu Jitsu you know discrete more strong relationship between between you yeah yeah and kind of helps build those bombs yeah yeah man yeah yeah yeah definitely yeah that's what's up so tell me tell me about yesterday so you yourself competed and then you know you're a pretty high level athlete so you know how did that go for you uh look um not training much Jiu Jitsu for a while yeah yeah I look I have a trainee much more MMA now but I'm still doing fuel train trainings in Jiu Jitsu you know so my fault was not in Jiu-Jitsu it's me like a professor or a coach to help them other people to get out at one level yeah and present them about Jiu-Jitsu about the the cultural around jujit so you know so but for myself I'm doing more much more MMA now because I'm looking for a next step like a challenge you know so I think it's that's why my level is a little bit down in the digital competition yeah yeah institutions now you know yeah there's a lot of things that carry over between the two but you know they are different they're different sports well of course you know for example yesterday I I get submission by um Hill hook yeah you know okay but I'm training MMA now it's not excuse yeah that's good but I'm trying to MMA now if someone get me a a heel hook I would not try defending put the leg here they like that and grab this no no no right I'll give I'll give a punch on the face and to smash the guy you know I don't care if my uncle's his oh my goodness the things change when you your focus is another one so yeah I think I need uh one more challenge now the next step you know so so what's holding you back um your first amateur MMA match so wait what are you waiting on uh I don't know you don't know I don't know I don't know we can get you we can get you a an opponent I know people you know I I can definitely get you again yeah let me know yeah yeah put it out there yeah a couple folks yeah please okay yeah this can be good what's your what what do you want to fight at what wait uh 84 84 yeah okay I can fight in 84. I'm 90 now you know okay I can do 84 or easy yeah I'll see what I can do yeah help me with this yeah okay yeah definitely um and so uh what okay so you're training at SVG yeah I'm still training there yeah yeah I love the place I love it it's a fantastic place I love it I love my teammates there it's awesome yeah so oh you're you're okay so you're training at SPG um how often are you training there just pretty much every day or um now I I have training more because before I was not trying to focus in the gym the club with my students everything now I have a little bit more time okay so I'm training three four times per week you know but properly maybe you know and then you're still getting in rounds you know when obviously when you're teaching with my students yeah not too much no look I prefer to to give a class properly I I roll a few times but I do not train technique and everything you know I show the technique today two three there and then I pay attention details to coach my students properly you know a few times I do one or two rolls with them okay but just to put pressure to show them how is the pressure with them the the graduation guy you know yeah just for this you know but not properly to improve myself you know what do you feel is the kind of the hardest part going you know from time Jiu Jitsu background kind of into mma's what's uh is there anything that you've been struggling with to kind of transition from because like so they're different they're the same but different you know so who you mean about the Jujitsu to MMA yeah yo man like Jiu-Jitsu no gaming right yeah of course because I don't know if you wanna I think few things that 50 of the Jiu Jitsu nogi like the I bet you Jeff rules for example 50 you can do not use in the MMA it probably wouldn't work out very well man if you do a bidding Bowl the guy he do not need kick or punch you he just dropped their weight over your your spine you're dead yeah you know like if you train the specifically nogi when you move to MMA you need to forgot 50 you know I think this is the difference 50 that you are using no give for example the like guard for example or pull on the guard this doesn't exist yeah this man would recommend now if you train if you're trained 10 years you you take five years and put on the trash you know so okay I think this is the difference okay each other no so Jiu Jitsu I think you're gonna use just when you are on the big trouble you know we said in Brazil you do to save and properly save you know when you are on the big big trouble you just give one triangle or arm bar and escape this situation you know but properly to pull on the guard you need to be a Savage in Jiu Jitsu you need to trust a lot in your game because it's it's not easy you know I think this is the difference between between children you know what uh who are you working with as far as striking goes do you have anyone uh do you have a it's like a specific partner or kind of a coach for like striking kicking Striker I have training just the regular train in SBG but I'm doing a few Brave Trends there in my gym because now we have uh Muay Thai classes there regular I have trained with uh kalino Avila it's our coach there but on this class in locomotive I'm student regular student I do the warm up uh I spy in the position of the day you know I'm studying on this class I have gotten I haven't proven a lot with this coach and I have another coach there and another spot it's his name is uh Roberto yeah he's from Brazil I think he has a 20 or 25 MMA fights you know it's like wow it's a so experienced guy the professional so him yeah yeah professional MMA professional fight 25 professional fights are just kind of all together yeah yeah it's it's something I think is with Muay Thai and MMA mates that's still very impressive no but still it's a lot of fights you know so now he start two weeks ago to give me classes there also no uh but I have trained with him before or before the he can he give classes there at uh at our club so this is my true quotes private to striking but I still doing the class in uh SBG the regular at Wednesday 11 or no kickbox classes there yeah yeah and Jiu-Jitsu everybody yeah yeah so uh you know let's talk about your gems more yeah um so what how long have you been you've been running now what since 8 April 20 when we opened there yeah 20th of March on March March so I I finally because how are you finding being you know kind of a business owner you know seeing things from the other from the other end you know rather than just the you know the student um how are you finding things as you know the guy running the show yeah it's everyday it's a neutrality if you know man the things happen all the time but um sometimes I feel why I do not do why I do not did this before you know yeah yeah so it's it's very good when look I I was just out on Israel I have one student there he start to train uh he was so big so fat you know and then no no seriously yeah just the way you said that though so big he's a big big boy big boy and then he start to train there asking why did you start YouTube and then say yeah I want to to lose the weight and everything he said and then I say hear me okay you're gonna take out lots of kills in few months yeah you sure yeah because I saw this happen all the time in Jiu-Jitsu I think you are trained with me for three months and then he already spent 18 kilos he lost 18 years damn 18. it's not 8 18. that man close to 40 pounds too much it's like one one child yeah yeah yeah yeah I don't think my daughter yeah yeah you know so you see I recite I received lots of uh message in my WhatsApp like thank you very much coach yeah this this thing is changing my life and then you know that's great that's got to be very that's why I'm telling you that I feel that I need to start this before to do this job before because it's awesome you know the hard work pays off I wake up every day 6 a.m go to sleep 11 every day but the hard work pays off when you receive a message like this man it's not it's not just about be athlete or you change the life like uh two one one mother one father one son and the normal people regular people not just about the athletes or competitors or Savage guys or champion no no so you are changing this life man this doesn't have a price you know what I mean so you know I I hear you um you know and look I think I I think you started it at the right time you know because you know even for me when I when I began Jiu Jitsu and everything um you know I I wished I would have done it sooner yeah like 10 years ago yeah but like you know we maybe we wouldn't have been ready maybe yeah yeah we should have yeah um but also maybe it wouldn't have worked out then you know so I don't know sometimes I think I'm a firm believer that you know when we do something especially something that we know we enjoy I think we maybe we did it at the right time yeah yeah yeah and yeah so thank you for that buddy and we we're still feeling like yeah I should do start before but who knows yeah that's where we we get if we start maybe we give up before exactly yeah exactly yeah I understand yeah it makes sense but who knows you you were you were when you started and you were ready you knew you were ready yeah you know and maybe before then uh you know perhaps you didn't have that confidence you know and if you didn't have that when you started it maybe you know maybe things wouldn't have worked out so well yeah you know but luckily you know it has and I'm very happy for it I'm very excited for you I love being able to tell people I have a friend that owns a gym how long time you you do you think about to start your podcast a couple years yeah that's why I said like I thank you so because I had that opportunity I was always you know kind of push-footing around it and um it's kind of like so I I had all the equipment well most of it you know and then I was just kind of you know waiting for the opportunity and I thought I was gonna have to kind of just make it myself but even then I think I would have I I still probably would have procrastinated a bit so when you I said when you when you offered that it kind of forced me to do it because I really didn't have a reason to say no no you know and yeah so like I said I I am forever grateful for you kind of I wouldn't say making me do it but you you made that opportunity for me tonight and I took it look about the the gym in the club so I I start to study about this a long time ago I know like I think four years ago or more and then I was in one time I was sick about the stood all the time so now and he put this in practice you know I'm just disturbing you watching videos tutorial interview talk with different people and everything one time I said man no no no I'm sick of this you know or I open this now or I give up to this give up's not an option you know so yeah no definitely I just started this because I was sick but after this I start to think about the another things you know we can do not spend a long time to do something you know if you really want to do what you got to do it just gotta do it you know so we wait long time studying too much about the things you know sometimes it's not always a terrible thing you know because if you say you have an aspiration to do something and it requires an extreme amount of work that you didn't know was involved yeah so if you kind of I'll spend a little bit of time not just jump into it than perhaps but no I I get your point though yeah oftentimes like just just do it yeah just you know kind of figure it out study when you are doing you understand yeah so fake it until you make it yeah yeah you understand the Story of My Life yeah oh God yeah it's kind of you know all right so going back to you know being a you know a business owner yeah um what are some challenges that you have faced being you know kind of the boss um it's not about the boss it's about Coach kids kids class you know yeah man destroying me really you you have to two daughters right yes yeah you have to you you may you know what I mean destroying all my energy you know I really need one coach two kids class because and you only have them for like an hour yeah one hour or just one hour yeah but it's one hour with 10 kids yeah it's a lot you know so they love me the kids love me on the glass you know but it's all the time man it's crazy I love it I love it but I really need one coach to help me you know so it's awesome it's awesome it's a new challenge with the properly the kids every day every day I learned something different so and then with my white belts my beginners also you know because everyone come to have uh everyone come looking for jujitsu with a different goal okay as I said when you start before we know you start the interview about my students I have a few people there want to to be more healthy you want to do something we want to self-defense if I get a hundred new students I mean white belts all them will get one different goal and then you know what is more impressive Jiu Jitsu can help everyone yeah yeah you know this is crazy because you have one how can you say uh imagine English how can I save it you have a solution yeah so it's one magic solution to result 100 to 100 problems to 200 people different you know this is so crazy and we sell this product there and the club all the Jiu Jitsu Club we sell because it's uh it's a company business we sell that but with the result the money can do not pay you know you improve your like for example you improve your relationship with your wife when you start to train to teach with our friends at your job you feel more healthy you start to eat clean you stop to drink alcohol but no one push yourself to do this you start to improve yourself you know because yeah because look Tony start to train the Jujitsu today yeah just giving an example and then Tony looked to Watson going to competition making the diet go to the the gym to lift weight yeah and then by my exam example 20 start to train his life and then when Tony got a blue belt Purple belt brown belt go out to the gym go to the northern country but Tony stayed there when we receive a new white belt Tony will be the new example you know Tony just support Tony I stopped his smoke stopped to drink alcohol start to eat clean and this new white belt you see this and make the same thing it's the same thing that we said before about there's no ball you know yeah so this is the impressive I I'm seeing this all all the time at the club you know so the money kit do not pay this man it's uh it's so impressive this this is the thing that I learned every day there you know so it's good yeah that that's uh it's a good point that you make because like uh you know even for me myself I noticed when I train more I I live healthier say um and what I mean by that is like I don't I don't drink very much to begin with but you know like if I'm training especially if I'm training for something like if I have a competition or something coming up yeah um you know like I I cut out a lot of that crap because you know I want to be better and you know eating junk food and you're not eating it proper or healthily or properly or you know not exercising stuff like that um it you know you can't get better if you don't do that now obviously you know you have like your cheat days and stuff um and I don't think it's probably probably not also probably not healthy to completely cut all that out you know because like it's good it's a good reward you know you know a nice greasy cheeseburger yeah you know not a healthy every day but every once in a while uh you know it's great it's good um you know so exactly to your point you know you see other people you know leading a type of way and you see how they're improving you know it's almost like a little mini competition within the club you know you see how everyone's kind of progressing and maybe if you don't feel like you're progressing that way you can kind of look at look towards someone and be like okay this is what they're doing yeah you know maybe that's what I should do too oh yeah so look another good example that I have about Jiu Jitsu it's about the self-confidence yes you see I already received a few guys or girls at the club they say ah I want to learn Jujitsu to defense myself on the street you know so yeah it's not common you fight every day on this street you know like a gangster it's not common even properly if you'll be a normal people you know so but we receive people with this because they are afraid to walk alone on the street or something like that but of course Jiu-Jitsu you you learn a lot of things you can choke someone and you know so okay when we start these people uh you know what the change on his life it's a confidence yeah because you started training you start to your tournament you start to do a few positions and then you feel that you can fight with everyone on the street which everyone and then this gives you more confidence you start to walk different you your post rub becomes too different yeah and then it's everything's about it's about portions about confidence and also this doesn't mean that you're gonna fight the people is not afraid of you because you are a jiu-jitsu fighter or digital player no no it's about your confidence yeah you're confident that you can you know handle a situation yeah you know if you feel confident in yourself oftentimes you don't have that uh you don't have to prove something to someone else you know yeah so it doesn't sometimes it doesn't have to get you know physical so just even you know as far as self-defense goes people who are interested in learning Jiu Jitsu for self-defense it's good in that aspect just like because it boosts your confidence yeah and then it you know it might something you know that happens on the street yeah or wherever you know it might not turn into something physical because of your own self-confidence like I said you won't be kind of drawn into it due to you know maybe like an insecurity or something like that so you know just from even avoiding conflict in general um I'd say that Jiu Jitsu is great for them yeah and then obviously you know you don't know to think uh some people's have no the courage to talk each other look in the eyes yeah you know or or just uh up the head to look they know the people some some people attack each other with their head down the floor you know this is crazy but if you have the confidence to keep your head up and look someone in the eyes then yeah in another case they they accept the people talk with they for example if you talk to me something that I do not like out of my friend I do not like you talk me with this okay yeah you stop just talking you know the people just accept and go home yeah but look if you get a a black would you do some black belt you do not accept and go home he'll say he'll do not fight with you but he'll say or you stop are you gonna get another problem okay you respect me I respect you I I say this a lot of times you respect on the properly in the the traffic you know yeah you respect me and then I respect you you understand me no okay what you gonna do huh yeah no no okay that's it that's that's one thing like sorry you mentioned respect uh that that's one thing that I think a lot of society's missing it's kind of respect from one another yeah and a martial art in general like they certainly teach you that yeah you know and some more respect yeah and once even if like two people even if only one person has respect for the other you know that that can that'll go a long way you know um but you know two people in general respect each other like I said if I'm you know talking crazy and say something and you know you don't like it you can be like hey you know kind of cut that out you know and because we have this mutual respect for each other yeah yeah yeah sorry about that yeah you know or you know oftentimes you know when people disrespect some one another you know they mightn't even do it on purpose or know that they're doing it but to you know start going back to confidence again to have that confidence to kind of say stop it or yeah I don't know or hey cut it out like that's not appropriate or whatever yeah um yeah nowadays everyone just gets pissed off and goes on Twitter and then gets People canceled you need to to learn or to show this to your kids when they are young the confidence becomes uh this should come when they are young you know so yeah when your kids you know I know that I know this just from mine like they mirror you like everything yeah yeah yeah the things you wouldn't notice it's the things you wouldn't think they would pick up on yeah you know that's the stuff that they that they mirror so if you kind of have you know this error confidence yeah about you they're going to pick that up you know and they're just getting a second hand from you um yeah like I noticed that with my kids so that's one you know just that alone is something that keeps me motivated to stay involved in the sport and to you know to keep it up yeah man I think Jujitsu is about this Jiu Jitsu respect uh respect confidence and discipline this stuff you know the basic fundaments that all human people what would you say what would you say to someone who is hesitant you know maybe they're like or someone who said who is hesitant someone who someone who is apprehensive about wanting to start like say is it maybe you know they're sitting at home and you know they're watching this or maybe they're like they're watching the UFC you know and you know they think maybe they might want to to try something like that but you know they're unsure what would you say to them um just go you know just go looking for yeah just try but look I try to one on good one good club yeah and then like would you suggest maybe just kind of try not a few clubs because like that you know like they are fat like they are families you know and sometimes you're not you're not not that you're not gonna fit in but you might not blend well with you know one Club versus another so would you recommend kind of trying around yeah try trying out because you already you start to do something new yeah if this be far from your home this would be impossible to do you know try to to find something around your home with people that you already know ask few of your friend if someone do this if you can go with a to to a trial you know uh a hundred percent you will be welcome on this place you know so that's yourself get one challenge to your life you know you if you don't go you you spend your time doing the same that you are doing for whole life you know yeah let's do it if you doesn't like at least you try it but put one like one go one month go in three months ago in one week but put one go if you do jujita for three months if it doesn't like you have a big problem you have a big problem you know so I'm I'm joking now but just try let just do it you know what you're gonna lose exactly exactly that's what I say anyone who's even just kind of skirting around the idea of you know wanting to try it even money because the most Jiu Jitsu Club they give at least one class free yes for everyone you know so uh the most Jiu Jitsu Club give one to in my club for example is five classes free you know you can go have a have a fun you'll be so welcome in my club for example we borrow a kimono for you clean wash just try you know you'll have nothing to lose just trying I'll add on to that and say if if you try it and you're remotely Satisfied by it sign up for a competition yeah it doesn't need to be immediate yeah like three months yeah wait three months all right uh excuse me sign up for a competition about three months down because then it it kind of forces you to to go every day so like like with anything new um you know maybe you can talk yourself out of going yeah you know like uh it's you know you've been twice a week already but you need to go that third or maybe that fourth day yeah um you know but you're tired and you're sore but you have a competition going up yeah you're good you're gonna kind of force yourself to do it and that's what I found for me was very helpful that's why last year um you know I was I competed so much and that's like I competed so much and I learned a lot in a year um and I've noticed this year I haven't competed at all this year partly because I have a you know 10 month old yeah you know and I'm kind of taking the year off and competing just you know things with the baby but next year next year is gonna be different I'm gonna try and compete as much as possible yeah you know the baby will be in crushed during the day my oldest she's in school so I have no reason to know yeah you know and then or like you had mentioned you know but the the losing weight just this year being so intermittent with my training like I've I've noticed my weight gain you know and I'm trying to get down to sub 100 kilos so we'll put a poll out there on what people think I weigh yeah it's a bit more than 100 at the moment yeah um so yeah like next year is the year I'm gonna yeah I feel like I'm Really Gonna earn that blue belt that I have um you know and I yeah sorry back to what I was saying um you know even if if you go back to what we were saying yeah you know if um you know you're remotely interested just try it and like you said just a lot a lot of gyms you know offer free classes or competition yeah look the people are afraid it's normal of course it's normal it's a competition but look we'll be you against one guy same weight same experience same age similar not exactly what they say but similar with one hey free watching you and with a time yeah and then most important you have a chance to tap if you feel uncomfortable you have a chance to my friend you you you will do not die there you know it's just having fun it's just a challenge you know it's it's a very very good believe me and and then you know if you do put in that effort you know that those three months you know you'll have your your team will be there as well yeah to help you exactly you're gonna have people there supporting you yeah yeah a little cheering section as well um and then I'll tell you after that if you win you're gonna feel like a Superman yeah man you're gonna sleep your your medal and then you're gonna have a sex with your wife and everything you know believe me look your family you will talk to me like oh look this is the champion family he's you Justified to
