Energized Show countdown episode ahead of Cage Legacy Fighting Championship 15, with Hooligan Martial Arts head coach Paddy Holohan and his fighter Shauna Bannon before her professional MMA debut. Bannon says she feels ready, has sold over 170 tickets, and expects a sold-out atmosphere on 9 April. Holohan frames the night as a milestone for HMA: Bannon is their first student to go from amateur to pro under their program, after joining around April 2018 when she spotted the team training at Talbot Leisure Centre while she still did taekwondo. Both praise her work ethic, maturity as a parent, striking base, and developing wrestling, clinch, and jiu-jitsu. Holohan says people underestimate her grappling despite roughly four years on the mat with strong partners including Molly McCann, Rose Welch, Sarah Kearney, Donald Clooney, and Sam Delaney. Bannon discusses cutting to 57 kg strawweight for the first time since taekwondo in 2017, the difficulty of doing so with a child, and plans to likely move to flyweight next while keeping strawweight as a possible later option. She expects a tough but beatable 1-1 opponent, Carrie. Holohan backs her long-term UFC potential, stresses building a brand through the UFC, and says they are not looking past Carrie. The hosts tie the moment to wider Irish MMA momentum, including Gary headlining UFC 273 the same weekend, and their own recent UFC meetings where they flagged Bannon to the promotion.

energize show up the irish okay what's going on guys and welcome to a brand new episode of energized ross introduce the guests man today we have the head coach of hooland martial arts the hooligan paddy hillen and one of his best pupils the one and only mama bee shauna bannon she makes her pro debut april 9th at cage legacy 15. guys how are you doing good good great guys absolutely we had to make sure we had just on before you know the pro debut main event some something that you're used to now shauna how are you feeling in preparation for this one because uh this one matters more than anything you've ever done doesn't it yeah 100 yeah now i'm feeling ready i'm buzzing for the weekend i've sold over 170 tickets so the place is going to be hopping so i can't wait i'm looking forward to it i'm paddy what's up all your relatives friends yeah big l family paddy what does this mean to you as a shauna's head coach and for hma in particular um i just love seeing people doing well especially when you put the walk in because some people do well sometimes when they don't put the walk in and but sean puts the walk in you know like i remember even the first time when i mesh on it and the amount of years she has done fighting i am and it hasn't kind of like hasn't uh paid her you know she's it she's she's she's an adult now you know what i mean she's in this stage of a life where she should be making a lot of money for the effort that she's putting in and so that's kind of where i'm at i'm delighted to see that she is going and when people say oh well you can't do it for the money and stuff like you can't eat the euro stuff you know what i mean in a way so she obviously has a kid and and this is the start of them incredible for us so uh i'm so excited this is a this is the the first student that we had that that has gone from amateur to to pro from from the whole time and obviously i've been involved with different careers and different kind of a training programs but somebody who we've kind of put it together and they yeah we cannot fault you on it she has pulled the toy me in the wall game and she listens and turns up and you can't ask for more than that so this is also a big night for yourself paddy uh how long ago did shauna come into hma it was four years ago now sean is it yeah i think it's actually it's it was april 2018 so it's coming up to four years yeah you're right yeah you're asking what's everyone's doing in the pajamas yeah i was it was remember we were training in a talent leisure center and i was still doing taekwondo at the time and they were like switching from one venue to our location from another and i was watching them and i was like what is going on i remember seeing joey in like gypsy pants what the hell is that sport it's mad for um yeah no i love it no it's a it's definitely come full circle for the two years and paddy obviously you've been around the block you've seen some of the best athletes in the world you've trained with the most famous fighter of all time where where do you rank shauna's potential in terms of people you've trained with especially with women um something we've realized over the years is that there's say there's a lot involved in it you know it's not just the skills boys and that that that much you can get people that are some of the the greatest fighters in the world but they they it still doesn't happen for them you know what i mean they're they're still there 10 years later and people don't really know who they are and they're still getting paid it's going up two grand at a time and stuff so shauna has a massive package together you know what i mean she she she really is a good person which is which which helps you know remember sometimes people kind of put this character on if shawna just goes and just push sean it just be sean abandoned that's what i do say to her um in the gym if she just goes and does that and um like she she she's raising that kid and she's just she's a good person you know what i mean as i said she kind of have a massive following from from the kickboxing background and and then and then from the the the jiu-jitsu background and grappling back right now because she's like she's she's got lots of alloys there as well you know and molly mccann and um just a lot of people out there i'm trying to what's what's oh she's going to kill me rosa welch blows the wall i obviously forget about this and stuff like that and she was she was a theon training sometimes and then obviously sarah kearney and this was a lot going on there you know and shauna has the whole package she's a good teammate as well as as an athlete and competitor so i'm so excited for an early show that sees or will see exactly what i see and what i have seen from the start yeah we've noticed it for for ages as well and shauna was the energy of those 2021 irish female amateur of the year as well so like having you on this week in preparation for your pro debut like we've been really excited for have we ross yeah we've been absolutely buzzing like we've seen the talent and we've seen the overall package like you know i mean when it comes to um you know wreck noise and knife factor we definitely have an eye for and like we've said it to people in the ufc we've said it's grain boy and like look out for her she's she's on the open up and paddy touching it there like you have some excellent training partners and you've pulled in some extra training partners from you know the jiu jitsu world and but what i would definitely want to touch on is that someone who stole the show at ufc london and meatball molly mccann um i think i think she's now probably you know the biggest female superstar in mma without a belt so what was it like to train with her and how good was it to test yourself against someone who is a ufc vet and at the top of her game at the moment yeah it was unreal to get some training more issue i went off to her and then she came back and was trying to move us as well it's just like the experience she has on her even her energy like when you're talking to her like she's a good positive person to be around and so so grateful to get the time and round and where yeah did you try to get you out for a bevy i'm not yet we're hitting it next week she actually did she was talking about in the gym literally and it's like when it happened i was like oh my god literally have you sitting where i'm going mad he was talking about it in detail that day wasn't she yeah look literally we were talking about like a clinch position in that 50 50 or that over under and she was like sometimes i like to spin my elbow you know [Laughter] as long as she's not trying to on you in the training room it's all good today not yet it's probably the greatest women's knockout in ufc history as well like it was absolutely incredible and shawna one thing i also want to get into is uh obviously your opponent she's she's one on one on a pro record what do you know about her and what to expect from charisma on this occasion she's tough like you can see it in her in our previous fight she is tough and she's quite well-rounded but i think that i'm i'm better than her everywhere like wherever the fight goes i'm confident that i'll be able to answer what she has and then paddy from from a coach's point of view obviously everyone knows shauna as this like phenom with the striking background but the last few times i've seen her i've been really impressed with her wrestling at her clinch game and her jits do you think people underestimate her when you know her name comes across a piece of paper to sign on the line to fight her 100 percent um if you if you feel sean is a grappling man as i said it takes it takes a while you have to you have to pay the process you know what i mean she's training grappling about four years now but she's excelling because she's doing the she's putting herself into the awkward round she's not in the mat looking around dodging that round you know and and you see that and i see that all of the time you know and it's you've got to put yourself under the pressure and we've got some phenomenal grapplers in the gym and with like donald clooney sam delaney and then you've got really good like the mma lads and stuff like that i haven't kind of broke through with the name yet but they're still paying the process and still developing because they you have to develop all of the game you have to forget about this being streaking and grappling you know what i mean i think sean does that so well um i think at the start when she came in she was blitzing and then getting taken down and she's like [ __ ] there's something going on here you know what i mean like they have this um but now she has it like where she'll bleach you and then double leg you and then elbow you in the head she's a big problem out there for people now you know she has a really good game off her back as well and against defense and and she has balance like i don't know sometimes it's like that she shouldn't be standing you know that's like you've got a single leg over her head for an hour you know it's yes she's she's very tricky i think you left one person out in the wrapping rounds uh just this black belt under tom king i think his name is paddy hooland i think he's all right i think he's been around a few times to be honest i've always said it like i wanted to be a culture from the start of this and i would probably be i consider myself a better coach and competitor or even as an athlete and i would say i just see i see this game i feel it's like i feel it you know when i'm in the clinches and i'm obsessed with it you know i'm there and i'm still passionate every single day about it and it's great to get somebody luke sean and the athletes that we have there that are passionate and that that trust the process you know because it can be a little different between your hand being this way and that way and the people that go when they realize that usually the people that go that do really well some other people want to see it like they're looking over and they at the pads or something when you're showing something really really specific you know and they just don't that when it comes to the time you you won't walk paddy let's pretend sean is not here for a second like like obviously she's very if like she's low the potential like how far do you think you can see shauna going in the future i know she's only making her pro debut this weekend but like you see her every week in the gym putting in the hours like we see it on instagram as well she's always posting like how far do you think shauna can go um i think shauna could be a ufc champion for sure like um she has the skills she has as he said and not only the skills but they the attitude em and she's she's she's coming into a mature stage of our life as well where i think people might think the mma game is like it's a it's a young game and i'm not saying sean is old you know me but she's you got to be a little bit more mature and when it's coming to realize that like say if you're having a conversation with somebody and you're telling them like this person's good or they they might be a little bit better than this section or something like that i think if the maturity is not there especially um maturity people can get a little bit like what's it mean they're better than me and that you know like in a way where shawnee i think em could we'll take that on and understand what you're talking about and kind of and and and communicate back you know which is important so being able to have a communication conference a conversation with her is a it's massive so yeah shauna can be shown i could be a ufc champion 100 percent sean when you hear that like how does that make you feel yeah you responded in the room back into the room sean no it's good and that's what i mean like the truth that i have and paddy like even you can see it when he's coaching me like whenever he sets up my deal straight away because i have that trust in him so to hear him say that it means a lot one thing i also want to touch on china was that obviously you're dropping down the straw away for this um how is that waco cone i know it's not easy and then i think you'll remain at straw weight or do you think you're gonna have to maybe bump up the flyweight or you're not too sure um like so this is obviously my first time cutting down and and last time i would have been this way it was with taekwondo in 2017 and i obviously didn't have a child then so with a kid it's different you know like when you want to just be on your own and or have a nap or you know not communicate with the world i can't deal with that because i have to arrange jace i have to know that it's different and i'm not going to say i'm not going to do it again but i probably will do fly away for the next one for the next one definitely but there could be a later stage in the career that i go back down to again 55 kilo was a division it'd be perfect but i think the that extra little push just there but i'm on track now so like for making it this week it's all good but um it wasn't easy now excuse the pawn coming in my mouth but does making straw wait does that make you hungrier to win this weekend okay i only said to you today i was like gonna make her pay for my starvation how do you know all about that point there on the flyweights make sure you got to the lowest way possible in the ufc well you're actually i actually always thought you were better at bantamweight to be honest and you might agree i agree with me but um yeah it can be rough those extra few pounds and sometimes you have to really question yourself are you putting out the best paddy hool under the best childhood on the night at that weight class so it is a tough one and like again like a lot of people were you probably would have thought the same if there was 130 pound weight class you probably would have been all over it like like a rash i would have did 115 if we had that at that stage because that's just what you got to do you know what i mean without air so when when the contract came through for me it was 57 or never 457 can you make 57 yeah and i never made 57 probably made 57 i was making me communion or something like that that's what it's going to be but people do talk about like oh it's only two kilo or three kilo on the difference yeah it is after seven kilo and that's the way people need to see it and like even coaching i think i always wanted to be a coach as i said so having the understanding of what it's like to be wrapped up in the towns and getting into a hot bath and you know what i mean just like you just you want your whole lot you just you're just not into it you know what i mean and then all of a sudden you have to reload and stuff and how do you bounce back and i think it's extremely important to kind of at least feel that as a coach to know what it's like you know so sean is in a situation where if there was like a 70 kilo footer and 77 kilos so welterweight basically a lightweight there's two biggest there's a seven kilo gap in between there there should be 75 and because it doesn't you get 125 and then we'll fight it's just not the same you know so sean is in a situation where she's like even at 57 she's got a toy she's in shape at 57. she has no problems at 57 you don't like you said there was no problem with that bantamweight and but the contract came up 57 kilo and that was it you know i i was like never lost that parenthood and eight full trouble finishes up by the way i didn't even thought i felt um or by featherweight you know what i mean um but when the flyway comes and the bell rings the check is there that's that's another thing paddy i want to talk about like how do you feel about guiding shauna's career now because obviously you you fought under the ufc you you've done all that and you sort of have to almost manage expectations in a certain way like you know shauna could come in she could take the ufc by storm but she might be pointing on an entry-level contract as opposed to getting paid the big books on her second or third contract to fight like the upper echelon how does that come into consideration when you're accepting those matchups but look at her like this reason why i look at it is i am the ufc is the biggest show in the world in a way to build your brand and i think the ufc are expecting people to come in and build a brand as well and walk with them and that's what they are expecting and some people come in and think that hold on we're just not getting the money you're just going to deal with what i was doing it's changed you know dealing with one of a blue chip company you know i mean they're dealing with a massive organization and they have they when i'm at the while your organization says they have to reach um now there is other organizations out there as well but we just don't think say um if paddy pimla had to do what he did the weekend and and molly on on bellator um or on ksw or a show in poland it probably wouldn't have echoed as much as there is so now you have a situation where they're dealing with companies saying so like what's the stop shauna um do get two big knockouts fill in the tree arena one time you know i'm not getting ahead of it because you absolutely have to go in and fight these people i'm not looking past carrie either i'm not looking past anybody you know in that way um and that's the good thing about sean said we can have this conversation but she's mature enough to understand that the work still has to be done to get to that and she's willing to do it in in truckloads you know some people talk about it and then you're like i see 11 o'clock on monday and they're not there on monday so there's a big thing with that you know so hey shauna has that she will talk about it and then he'll be sure enough to understand that the walk still has to be durable and the ufc is the pinnacle and you'll even people that who have gone into different directions and fought other ways and all you will see that you know and if you want if you want money for everyone for a week but if you want your your legacy and your you want to be an irish folklore you know what i mean as as a a as a legend because you just go out there and pull it on you know and that's it and and shauna has the ability as he said to pull maybe three four or five points together here and there when they and and get something for the ufc and go out there and and and shock the world she has the ability and the ufc they they're going to see you all they're going to see 170 tickets getting sold in a few they're not a stupid either you don't want to be in the way so yeah well it's good yeah but it's good for yourself sean to hear this knowing that everyone has to believe in you and they can see the talent and like as well said like we've had people on even we had even gary on just after he made his pro debut and look what he's doing now headline and uc 273 this weekend as well like everyone is backing you everyone can see the talent they see the work you're putting in that's why we cannot wait to see you compete this saturday on kj15 on the april 9th this the arena is actually sold out but you can get the pay-per-view link in sean's bio yeah and also will be there as well so if you don't like feuds and you like to um eager to have black belts and talk and show you you can come see yours still um yeah jesus patty that that that was very well paul i i like the way you pulled that like i do think it is a partnership when you're starting with the ufc i mean and it's one of those things i always remember my values say to me when i was doing my homework you only get get out what you put in and i was like yeah but i hate doing homework in the end he was right at the end if you put the effort in you'll get the rewards and the same in anything in life have to say when connor was coming up when conor was doing these things and saying these things about whiskey are you saying this way back in the day you know what i mean it's the people that don't believe in themselves will look at somebody saying that and go oh yeah you're not going to do that you're not going to do it and then when it comes around to that actually happening they will hide in the corner you know or even support you i clap you from the sidelines you know you have to believe and we believe in shauna because how can i expect other people to believe in sean if we don't believe in sean and then sean has to believe in ourselves how could she expect other people to believe in ourselves you know when that's the way it is and you'll have the haters you have the people that i want you to win and want you to lose but i mean [ __ ] them just smile at them that's the way it is i think i might as well add in like myself and ross has been growing doing this for six years and then we just saw him with ufc in january and we met the team over in march so like like we were telling them about shauna as well when we went to won the uc foy pass meeting saying there's an irish girl over here that's that's going to be big so um yeah look people listening now if you put the hard work in like cold stuff comes from it like you know ross yeah absolutely those there's no questions asked about it and like i think that goes to show with yourself shawna and then with the work you're doing uh i heard him on martial arts as well how do you mean like these guys can't get the levels they're if you're not giving your back and your support and your knowledge so that's that's great scene it's great to see the partnership between these two guys and there's very few um sort of yin yangs there's very few sort of head coaches on their fighters who you look at who you'd say you are as close as you guys so we love to see that and that's why we're backing you guys the hallway to the top and we think you guys are going right to the mountain peak but i love the way it's one fight at a time it's one opponent at a time and as you say you keep on building those bricks and you'll soon have your hotel the house shawna what's shauna what's the rest of the week looking like for yourself in the build up to this weekend uh just focusing on the wake up now really kind of taping off my last pad session was today so just doing yoga and light sessions up until uh the wake up and then weigh in and then until you know if there's on the elbow trail this weekend the mask oh you'll [Laughter] this has actually been a very uh this has actually been a way better uh show than i expected i thought it was going to be a great one but like this is a way more insightful and like way more that's what you say in your head you don't say something no no i'm just just like i don't [Laughter] no look we wouldn't ask the parries on if we didn't want to zone you know i mean but uh we appreciate it for the people that are tuning in now make sure to check out shauna and patty as well in the build up to this fight because we can't wait to see it uh sean is there anyone you want to give a shout out to or is there any special sponsors or anything in particular you want to give a shout out to in the build-up teammates and coaches and uh my family and friends for helping me throughout this camp as well so everyone's been like it wouldn't be possible without them all so i'm so grateful and then patty anyone want to give a shout out to anyone both phil harris feels actually yeah he's not mad a little bit robbed he felt good yeah listen that's what happens if i was in dublin it was away there you see that's how it goes that's how it goes shout out to me miss cheryl what she does when i'm getting to the gym and traveling and doing these things and stuff like that so yeah shout out to the missus yeah and uh i know it's a lot of air book congrats again on you're expecting their for fourth member of the hooligan uh bambinos that that'd be another epic day in the books so uh football team pendant well you know we need to have a flavor sweet one out before you [Laughter] thanks a million for watching uh just wanna give a special shout out to monster energy they are sending the lads out
